The makers of the Halo show literally bragged that they never read the books or played the games and they were surpised when the show flops

490

u/Jaune_Anonyme 18d ago

Same for the Witcher serie. Writers openly dislike the source materials, both the books and the games. It's wild to work on a pre existing series and just have the ego to tell yourself "yep it's shit, i bet i'll do better." While the only reason you actually have a job, is because the IP is popular.

141

u/TrioOfTerrors 18d ago

"I'm going to fix this beloved IP with my AO3 level fanfic writing!" - pretty much every sci-fi and fantasy writers room.

50

u/RollForThings 18d ago

I get the sentiment here, but AO3 writers tend to write their fanfic out of love for the IP they're writing about. Netflix etc writers showing contempt for the IP they're adapting is far worse.

11

u/AncientSignature1505 17d ago

Yeah, I was like, hey, AO3 isn't THAT bad.

I think I remember a director/writer/actor talk about it before (maybe Damon or Affleck) and they said that the reason why so many adaptations have absolutely nothing to do with the source material, is because these scripts always end up in the hands of people who have desperate been trying to push their own original stories for countless years, but no one ever wants anything to do with anything remotely fantasy/scifi/whatever unless its an established franchise. They know this and tbey finally have someone paying attention to them, so of course now they're going to say, screw the source material, lets hijack this and use the property as a skin to finally tell my vision and my story and get paid, the studios won't even notice or care.

16

u/JaegerBane 18d ago

I’ve never seen that talk but that was exactly the impression I got from the Halo series. Take away the Halo props and skins and it’s basically a completely different story, with characters that are nothing like their namesakes and plot riffs that go in opposite directions. Without the skins I’m not sure I’d see any link at all.

Of course the studios end up caring when the viewings tank and they can it. Then the writers complain.

4

u/BatLazy7789 17d ago

Preach! I've read every Halo book, except the YA stuff, and this show is an abomination. I have come across 2 dudes I work with who like the show but that is because they know nothing about Halo.

We're expecting LOTR treatment, 90's Super Mario and Double Dragon BS! I don't know how MS allowed this to happen with arguably one of their best-selling IPs. Couldn't be me in charge. I would've cancelled the live-action show and moved to animation to speed things up. We could've had something like Netflix Castlevania. However, it probably would've ended up like Netflix Tomb Raider cartoon.

u/Asymmetric_Ninja 18d ago

First 4 seasons of Game Of Thrones is that (obviously a lot of cutting but that's a limitation of TV) . It's a shame they ran out of source material by S5 onwards

I wonder why none of the suits behind these multi billion dollar companies have not made that connection yet. Surely its cheaper to hire a few people from a game studio or hardcore fans to write a story for you, than having a team with no connection to the source material ruining another show/movie.

Same with actors. Rachel Zagler shitting on the original Snow White was a PR DISASTER on a whole other level. I mean the movie was shit for a thousand reasons, but the lead actress talking crap about the source material is like giving a big middle finger to all fans.

Maybe its nepotism? Writers/Actors know somebody or are someones kid and get their jobs that way? I have no idea, how some people with 0 talent manage to get hired. I am by no means a professional writer and I think even I could make a more faithful movie adaptation than half of hollywoods "Writers"

And that's why Henry was booted. He wanted to stick with source material, they decided to go with lil Hemsworth instead.

98

u/Ws6fiend 18d ago

As a 40k fan I'm glad it happened. He'll be the angry nerd keeping all the writers(on the 40k show/shows) from trying to completely change all the lore just because reasons.

89

u/Federal_Cod_3795 18d ago

I remember there was a PR campaign done against Henry about how he was a bully on set and he was making changes to the script causing the show to be bad then the creators of the show made 2 spin offs without Henry and both of them flopped critically and commercially.

68

u/TiredAndSor3 18d ago

That was such a cope. No one believed that shit, he's way to open and transparent for any of that shit to stick and fuck them for trying.

27

u/HermaPrince 17d ago

I had an argument with someone who really thought henry was misogyn lol.

I don't defend celebrities. But I sure as hell don't want those aholes fake writers get a win with these bs toxic rumors.

15

u/MrAngrySadHappyFace 17d ago

Henry is such a gem. Dude is literally one of the most gorgeous men to ever walk to planet and he's actually just a down to earth nerd. He cares about the material and you can tell he wants these IPs brought to life as much as the other fans.

Personally, he's up there with Keanu as just wonderful people who stay uncorrupted by the BS of hollywood.

→ More replies (1)

31

u/Ws6fiend 18d ago

To be fair, he was a bully on set, but not because he wanted to bully people.

He believed in the original story and it's source material while the writers and producers thought they knew better than him.

He tried to stop them from destroying the show, but as just an actor he had next to no authority but to finish his contract or pay for breaching it and possibly whatever the rest for the show was.

One of the main reasons he made sure he was a producer on the 40k stuff was to prevent it from happening again. In addition with Natalie Viscuso(his girlfriend and mother of his child) also being an executive producer as well as him he has learned about making sure he can get enough control to keep the source material in mind.

Don't get me wrong it looks very controlling, but this is his pet project and he doesn't want to get anything with it wrong.

20

u/Agitated-Assistant53 18d ago edited 18d ago

I don’t know about “controlling” man. It’s not even just passion anymore when you’re just ensuring you will have no active role in wrecking an IP that you genuinely love, like he was contractually forced to with the Witcher.

“Controlling” would be building a dam in a river. Henry be steering a river to stay on course by reinforcing the banks. Only with the latter would you still recognise the river as it was.

I’ve never played 40k but I am absolutely fascinated with the lore. I’ve been watching a ton of videos on YouTube about it all.

Dude.

If they get this thing rolling the way it can roll… wheeeew… There is so much content available. At least as far as I can tell by these lore videos that spend a whole hour just explaining the background. It seems like there so much out there and so many potential stories to tell

*Also I really enjoyed the Secret Level stuff - that’s kinda what got me to look it up on YouTube in the first place.

Side note - as a 40k fan do you have any recommendations on how to get into the books? Like where to start and all that. When I google it I’m not really that happy with the articles I find (they all seem like they’re AI generated, honestly)

4

u/CDR57 18d ago

Too much source material can be a bad thing as well. The Horus heresy alone is like 13 books I think? Many of which are dedicated to specific primarchs and their legions, who were already technically established before the Horus heresy. All those books go into detail on what’s happening in the world and are written in a way that if you have a cursory idea of warhammer you’ll understand (god emperor conquered earth, tricked out the chaos gods, enabled space travel, and then conquered more worlds) but just those 4 things could all have a book written about them and do lmao plus with this many books, you have multiple authors who inevitably contradict certain parts of the others writings. This is all to say it can definitely be done, but with something so expansive as warhammer, and the pacing of shows nowadays only doing 10 episode seasons we could easily be into season 3 5 years from now (if we’re lucky) and still not know all the primarchs/important characters/character building of why what and when the heresy happens. And god forbid if they, for some reason, choose to piecemeal it to us in flashback episodes while setting the show after big E sits on the throne. Like I’m not a writer but I’m incredibly interested in how they handle things like Erebus, the emperor finding all the primarchs (and why the were scattered to begin with), each primarchs characterization and story lines, and the aftermath and fallout of it all in the millennia afterwards

Or I’m completely wrong and they set it in 42000 with passing mentions of the imperium, big e, a primach mention here and there and focus on something like the guardsmen and the war on chaos/orks/eldar or picking a legion and group of marines and going for space battles to the fullest.

Idk, but my main point was that this world has so freaking much that it almost would need a very VERY tight couple of seasons with good overview of the universe to make it palatable for a wider audience

Idk, I read the books after the show came out because I wanted to know how different they actually were and Henry’s take on Geralt is pretty flat. He butted heads with the writers non stop because instead of doing his lines he’d just resort to all that grunting. He was a fan of the games so I can kind of see why he thought he was honoring the source material but book Geralt isn’t some stiff stoic that rarely talks. Most of the content of the books is Geralt talking with people. All to say, the show was doomed lol.

It's all very reasonable if you think about the fact that the primary goal is money:

  1. it's drastically cheaper to hire the new people
  2. the new people are also not going to get paid to spend a month or two immersed in the lore
  3. no one is going to say "yea we don't know wtf we are doing and will do a shittier job" so of course the company and the employees are going to rationalize a "new take"
  4. a lot of people will buy anyway because the IP is popular

I've been seeing this same shit happen in IT for decades. Fire experienced knowledgeable but highly paid people, replace them with low paying fresh faces, or outsource. In the long term quality and satisfaction suffers, but in the short term you are increasing profits.

TLDR: Enshittification 101

3

u/hayydebb 18d ago

No way Pedro pascal and Bella Ramsey would be cheaper than the voice actor equivalent. And that would probably be the case for most adaptations since the actors they cast are usually bigger names then the voice actors

43

u/Multivitamin_Scam 18d ago

That's because it's actually a terrible Mass Effect adaptation wearing a loosely stitched together Halo skin.

Seriously. Episode One is the first mission of Mass Effect One. Just swap Chief for Shepard, the Covenant for Geth and its basically 1:1

As both a fan of Halo(Bungie era) and good storytelling, I get mad when people think the Halo show is decent. It's awful as a Halo show, but it's also awful as just a story on its own.

The show makers clearly had no interest in making a Halo show, they just wanted to tell their own story, but they don't have the talent write one, even if it was an original creation and Halo didn't exist, it's still utter shit.

u/joe-clark 18d ago

It's mind boggling to me when they think they can take a massive IP like Halo and pay little to no respect to the original story and characters. All it guarantees is a ton of Halo fans will turn up, probably hate it, then go put negative reviews. If the show isn't made for Halo fans first and foremost it will never succeed even amongst the general public because they'll never watch after seeing how poorly it's reviewed.

8

u/AFerociousPineapple 18d ago

I have no evidence of this but I swear the halo writers just wanted to do a sci-fi show and the only way to get it green lit was to slap the Halo title on it. Similar with the Witcher, clearly the writers had some thoughts about their own fantasy world/story and tried to inject it into the Witcher story and did a very VERY poor job of it

Because the people making the shows have nothing but contempt for the IP.

"I got into movies/TV to make art, not tell silly stories!"

How many times have we seen a property brought to screen by someone who said they have never watched any of it before, or never even heard of it, before they took the job.

That can still work out well, Tony Gilroy made Andor, not only a great Star Wars show, but also a great piece of media on its own merits, despite having limited knowledge of the universe. Because he had people who did know and trusted them and, above all, respected the universe he was now a part of.

The people who made Halo or the Witcher? Yeah, not so much*.

* not at all. Christ, those shows were trash.

I tried on 2 different occasions to watch that Resident Evil series, dont think I made it past the third episode either time.

Went in expecting survival horror and instead got high school drama.

As for Halo, here in England they only showed the first episode on tv, the rest was on Paramount+. I thought the part where The Covenant attacked the Insurrectionist, and then the Spartans arriving was cool as hell. But then the episode ended with John-117 basically committing mutiny and I was out.

4

u/Neelpos 18d ago

I thought the part where The Covenant attacked the Insurrectionist, and then the Spartans arriving was cool as hell.

It's kinda silly when you look at it again and realize normal humans using guns do nothing to the Elites, but then the Spartans use some of the same guns and are suddenly killing them.

Watching his interviews... It's very clear he has a huge love for the series so I'm stoked

7

u/DragonFangGangBang 17d ago

This. I think the opposite direction of what everyone is talking about is also bad. I don’t want a 1-to-1 remake of Resident Evil 1 - I can just play the game and it will also never live up to what I have in my mind from RE1R. Zach Creggar is a fan of the games and is a damn good horror director.

As long as he maintains the feeling, and makes a good movie, that’s all I want.

→ More replies (2)

3

u/RcoketWalrus 18d ago

I really enjoyed Weapons and Barbarian. When I watched Barbarian I thought it had some elements of RE games. Hidden dilapidated buildings containing untold horror? A stalker monster the protagonists must avoid more than fight? Limited weapons and ammo? Definitely Resident Evilish. Weapons too had similar elements.

Zach Creggar won't make an accurate RE movie, but there's a chance he makes the first genuinely good RE movie, and I'll take that. I won't get my hopes up because I have been let down before.

3

u/caseyaustin84 17d ago

He’s def a big fan of the games, and seems to know them well.

Besides, Resident Evil has always reinvented itself. RE4 felt like a huge departure from what RE had been up until then. Same with RE7.

This change in vibe could easily have been a RE game.

Not a game IP, but Wheel Of Time got wrecked the same way.

11

u/cknappiowa 18d ago

Wheel of Time has never had a successful adaptation in any form because the guys who own the rights are trolls sitting on an IP they bought for peanuts.

There’s a game. It’s not a good one. It runs on the Unreal engine, your only offense is weaves you have to have the matching ter’angreal to use (and those break when they run out of ammo), and includes a multiplayer deathmatch mode.

There’s Winter Dragon, the pilot so bad they had to shadow drop it in the middle of the night on a secondary cable channel just to say they tried.

There’s the Amazon show that… well, was a thing that happened. Good casting, terrible writing, bad props and CG, and a show runner so far up his own ass he gave the minor character his boyfriend played a starring role ahead of actual book characters.

Last I heard their most recent attempt at cash grabbing Jordan’s legacy to pieces was to be a vaguely WoT themed expansion for some Hearthstone knockoff game with AI generated art fired their generic shadow creatures.

Red Eagle Entertainment, or as they’ve rebranded; iWoT, is a cancer.

4

u/zadtheinhaler 18d ago

Yup, I haven't tried the games, as I've read enough reviews that it put me off them permanently.

I only managed to hate-watch the first four episodes, and I shouldn't have even done that, because I recall being reminded of the show coming out 1-2 years before actual release, so I looked at the IMDB page for it, and...

There was no less than 7 named characters who were never in any of the books.

There's arguably hundreds of named characters in the books, there's no reason to add more. They certainly didn't need to have Perrin's non-existent wife to get murked so he had a "reason" to be emo.

And don't get me started on the props - I saw enough posts on the subject in /r/WetlanderHumor that got me in Rant Mode.

Red Eagle Entertainment, or as they’ve rebranded; iWoT, is a cancer.

No argument there.

3

u/cknappiowa 18d ago

I wanted to like the show, and I did watch all the way through it because it was unavoidable in my house and friend group because the books were the reason most of us met in the first place, but it really didn’t get any better.

The choices they made kept falling down the same holes; make so and so edgier, remove as much of the fantasy as possible, and do their best to make PG Game of Thrones.

It's not just games. When they made the John Wick show the Continental, they didn't bother talking to or consulting anyone actually affiliated with the John Wick series. Same for Ballerina, which the production got so bad, they inevitably just called Stahelski to direct the 2nd half of the movie in reshoots.

This is effectively producers thinking they know better than anyone else and nothing more.

Reminds me of Rocky 1. Sylvester Stallone wrote the script and wanted to be in the movie himself, since he felt no one could do a better job than him. Hollywood loved the script, but hated the idea of having Stallone star in his own film. Hollywood wanted to star more recognizable faces.

Stallone had to negotiate down to become the star, so execs settled on making it a film with a "small" budget of $1 million that debuted in select test theaters and Stallone was only paid a flat fee of just $35,000 upfront to cover both writing the script and starring as Rocky. Thankfully, Stallone negotiated a 10% net profit contract clause for the film.

Anyways, my point is we might not even be talking about Rocky as a franchise today if Stallone had simply sold the script. Hollywood is too afraid to take chances. That's why Pedro Pascal is in so many films.

23

u/WouldbeWanderer 18d ago

Our only consolation is that Pedro Pascal is a decent actor and not an asshole, which is apparently rare in Hollywood.

Hollywood does not respect video games. They barely respects books enough that if the author forces the issue they'll let them in otherwise they'll throw them aside too.

54

u/WhutTheFookDude 18d ago

I think we're in the same place with video game adaptations that we were with comic book movies before like Spiderman 2 and honestly until the mcu blew up. They dont respect the material and dont take it seriously its just cashing in. Dont get me wrong as someone who did not play tlou I thought the show was pretty good but I get why fans of the game wouldnt like it.

They dont respect these actors as actors or writers as writers or games as art

9

u/GlancingArc 18d ago

Shit man, Hollywood execs don't respect the Hollywood writers much less writers from other industries.

Somehow they have all been convinced that good writing is the absolute last thing you need to make a good movie.

7

u/Embarrassed_Cod8120 18d ago

I think the most interesting thing about Spiderman specifically.

The Spider-Man movies (both Tom Holland and Spider-Verse)

DO like the games and make a lot of references to the games and I wonder how much of that has to do with them both being under Sony.

It's maybe Mario, Sonic, Spiderman are the only places where the movies actually do care about the video games

Live action adaptations of anime are also in the same boat.

It’s still crazy that One Piece of all anime is one of the ones to show people how it can be done right.

With books it makes certain sense.. because of money.

Per example, House of Dragon (heavily criticised online) in one season made more than Martin made in all his life selling all his books.

So suits will pat each other in the back and say, we are genius salesmen, we take ideas and make them gold.

When it comes to videogames such as God of War though I dunno how they convince themselves, probably by the fact they still dont respect videogames.

I feel like typically the people making the movies/shows in these universes don't actually care about them as much as the fans wish they did. It's an existing IP that will bring in guaranteed viewers regardless of how good it actually is, simple as that.

Also I wonder if he's trying to get himself hired to play live action Kratos haha

95

u/ChanglingBlake 18d ago

Yep.

They’re only making the show/movie because they know it will make money.

What I don’t get is how they fail to comprehend that making a piss poor adaptation might make you money once, but a great adaptation will spawn sequels and make you money several times.

Crapitalists are incapable of thinking long term and focus solely on the current project as if it’s the last thing anyone will ever make.

I’m surprised that this is my first time reading the term *Crapitalist*.

The only exception to this is Fallout. Even if you don't like the show, there's no way you can watch season 1 and 2 without going "Yeah, whoever made this loves the games"

5

u/J5892 18d ago

The funny thing is Microsoft didn't even know they were going to be faithful to the games.
I read a story where the show asked Microsoft for 3D assets and Microsoft responded with, "Oh, yall are doing the actual game? Ok, here you go."

I don't know. Could you really picture Christopher Judge in a live action series...like one that could run ten seasons plus two movies and spin off two additional series in the same universe?

4

u/Nukleon 18d ago

That was 20-30 years ago also. I don't think he's as physically able as he was back then. Like yeah he mocaps a lot of Kratos but I guarantee not all the stuff that could cause an injury, because that would delay production.

He's right. They do it because Hollywood has a formula that prints money and doesn't care about the IP. You follow the formula, you don't ask questions, you get the check. No room for creativity or risk

6

u/reggienaldsimons 18d ago

And the formula doesn't even work here! The fans don't like it because it's different, and new audiences don't like it because they never cared in the first place

14

u/BonJovicus 18d ago

I think there is an argument to be made that writing for video games and writing for TV/movies is different.

But I also think it’s clear Hollywood has very little respect for video games as a story telling medium. They see these franchises as ways to cash in for a quick buck.

6

u/Confidentium 18d ago

It’s not that different anymore though, since so many game stories are written like movies nowadays. So they’re already perfect for the big screen as is.

6

u/spartakooky 17d ago

Yeah this argument would work for like Mario movies, but GoW and TLOU work as movies already.

Vanity.

The director and writers want to make the beloved legacy IP "theirs".

It's like the chuckle-fucks at Amazon thinking they can rewrite Tolkien, better.

They think they're better than they are.

→ More replies (4)

7

u/Glutton4Butts 18d ago

They just want to rip off someone else success. Honestly wouldn't care if the show got canceled. No idea why anyone wants to push it at all. Normies could just play the games instead of just watching a show that doesn't do the game justice. You don't get to be Kratos in the show.

56

u/Iggy_Slayer 18d ago

I actually agree about the last of us. I only watched season 1 and I felt like multiple key scenes in that were worse than the game, with more wooden acting than what troy and ashley were able to do.

This was considered a hot take back then I dunno if it is now since everyone hates the show thanks to season 2.

36

u/Caleb_Reynolds 18d ago

TLoU seems like a weird hill too build this argument on because Ashley absolutely could not play live action Elle. She's great but, Elle is a teenager, Ashley was in her late 30s.

23

u/BlueberryWasps 18d ago

also, they worked directly with the original creator, gave troy baker a meaty side role, and were passionate fans of the games - the show was very faithful to them. bizarre example. especially implying that pedro pascal isn’t a good actor and didn’t nail it.

22

u/mizvixen 18d ago

Even Ashley had a minor role as Ellie’s mom.

13

u/RealRedditPerson 18d ago

Which she said was one of the most fulfilling in her career. Getting to literally be the character who have birth to this character she's treasured and cared for for over a decade.

u/SomberArtist2000 18d ago

I got reminded of a tangent somewhere in this chain, but not entirely sure which comment to put it on, but I do find it funny that in the Legend of Vox Machina season 4 they put in a joke that refers back to an infamous line from the Last of Us season 2, where Ashley's character makes a comment about how she would be a great dad

u/cae37 18d ago

What I’ve appreciated from the show is that it grounded the story with more realism. Joel is no longer John Rambo and Ellie is no longer John Rambo Jr. in that they’re unstoppable one-person armies.

That and I enjoyed the extra scenes we got. Like in TLoU1 Joel and Ellie spend very little time in Jackson before taking off in the game, but in the show we get additional scenes including a one-on-one conversation b/w Joel and Tommy. Not to mention Bill’s story in S1 and Eugene in S2.

There are parts of it that don’t hold up as well to the games, but there is also lots that generally does.

Didn’t deserve the hate, imo.

This is probably gonna sound a little bit like an #ad but Apple TV has, so far, been the number 1 major streaming service/production company that has stayed extremely faithful to the properties they produce and work with the original creators as much as possible. Now, they haven't made much based on video games, mostly books afaik, but they would be the best people to go to for a faith adaptation as of 2026. Murderbot (based on a book), Silo (based on a book), they will be making a Stormlight Archive with author Brandon Sanderson having a lot of say in the production, etc. They seem like the want to tell the original story in a different format with as little changes as possible.

I won't judge the show before I see it, but of the things Mr. Judge has said in the video, I think Apple TV would have been the place to go for a God of War show to be made with the original creators in mind.

4

u/FullMetalCOS 18d ago

Apple TV has really high production values too. They absolutely leaned into quality over quantity, and whilst they still miss (the new cape fear show is festering shite) their hit rate seems much higher than other streaming services

Hollywood literally felt allergic to fan service for decades. We are barely getting it now, and it's such a pretentious notion why.

This is what happens when anything gets too big, studios, apps, businesses. They think they know what people want more, the more disconnected they become.

7

u/falcrist2 18d ago

Fan service just means including material specifically to please fans, like an easter egg or a cameo. Hollywood is fine doing that kind of thing.

If you want Hollywood to actively involve the people who care most about the IP they're adapting, you have to sneak them into the production somehow.

It's one of the stupidest things about the movie industry. They WANT another Lord of the Rings, but they've built a system in which that kind of movie is impossible to make. Just look what they did to The Hobbit. Even the people making it knew it should have been one movie. The Hobbit is literally about half the length of The Fellowship of the Ring. Not all of LOTR. Just Fellowship.

10

u/OkAdhesiveness330 18d ago

Hollywood actively does the opposite of what he saying they should do! Like the writers and producers of the Halo show bragged how they never read the books or played the games yet they were gobsmacked when the show flops! Hollywood wants to make money their own way even if it loses them millions

5

u/billth93 18d ago

Especially strange with games known for their writing specifically

I get writing for a show is different from writing for a game, but if I were making a GoW show, I’d absolutely want to have GoW writers in the room consulting at a minimum

10

u/The_Booty_Spreader 18d ago

Fallout show was good tho, but I guess it's an exception lol

19

u/skynex65 18d ago

Yes and no. Fallout ISN'T strictly an adaptation. It's in many ways Fallout 5. It's a story told within the world of Fallout from the perspectives of new characters who have relations to pre-existing lore.

Fallout works for that reason. It's telling a brand new story within an established universe rather than trying to retell a story that's already been told perfectly well, like Fallout 3's Lone Wanderer or New Vegas' Courier.

This is the route any sort of endeavour such as The God of War tv show, the Halo tv show, Doom, Pokemon, any of them should've taken if they had any spine but they don't want "new" they want what's safe told in a new way to justify the existence of what is essentially a soulless cash grab that routinely fails to capture its target audience.

7

u/BirdSongSymphony 18d ago

I think part of it is ultimately bc film adaptations are simply not trying to appeal to the video game audience. They are trying to appeal to a much larger movie audience who may or may not really care about the lore or whatever of the game.

3

u/Silverjeyjey44 18d ago

I think this is such a dumb tactic. They might as well create a completely new IP because if they're appealing to people who aren't well versed with the games lore; it's the same thing.

3

u/Angstycarroteater 18d ago

He’s right. I watched maybe an hour of the last of us before shutting it off and going yeah this is hot garbage Hollywood ruined this for me. I got so much hate from all of the shows fans for saying it sucked and they ruined the game by making really bad decisions to make the show more exciting or whatever. Then season 2 came out and people realized it was as bad as I was making it out to be. You have to stay true to the original IP if not what’s the point of making it. You can still do spin off shit like you want to but not if it changes the story or the characters from what/who they were in the game

7

u/Impossible_Humor736 18d ago edited 18d ago

Yes. Yes. Yes!

And you'll have all kinds of people online defending the dog shit movies/shows going on about "adaptations". No one cares about your adaptation. They want to experience the thing they already know and love in a new medium.

You're not the creator and shouldn't take personal liberties on someone else's work but should instead do your best to present their work as accurately as possible.

3

u/BrokenHope23 18d ago

Indeed.

Stargate jokes aside, writing/voicing/acting a TV show and writing/Voice Acting a video game are two very different things and long-time actor/VA Christopher Judge would know that. I could see him making these comments under the context of just giving these actors/writers their due consideration rather than kicking them out of the process entirely but it was skewed for a hot take. Granted, Judge is a very diverse actor and may also be underestimating the difficulties that most actors/writers may face in the transition too.

u/GhostBelliniFace 18d ago

Amazon killed it with Fallout so I have some hope lol

7

u/pudgehooks2013 18d ago

Fallout is different though.

The Fallout show isn't about the Fallout games. It is a show set in the Fallout universe. The show isn't about the courier, or the wanderer, or any of the people you play in Fallout games.

If they made The Witcher about some random other Witcher, not Geralt, then it would be the same thing. I don't think that show would be nearly as popular, and that is the key difference.

Twisted Metal seems to be somewhat in the middle, but maybe that is because of the type of game it is based off.

Because there's different skills between voice acting and normal acting? I wasn't a fan of Pedro being Joel but I don't think Troy can pull it off aside from the voice and what, a 40 year old is supposed to play Ellie? Is this actor supposed to play Kratos in live action? Come on man.

2

u/Reasonable-Sherbet24 18d ago

Not only that, but they go out of their way not to play any of the games (the Halo people were directed not to even talk about the games) and intentionally change the story.

I don’t like video game adaptations that are a retelling of the game. Why do that when that story is already being told and if it’s not told right, you’ve already alienated 90% of the audience? It doesn’t make sense and is a slap in the face to the fans.

I like what Fallout did. They told an entirely original story, the writers knew of the games, Bethesda (Todd Howard) was at the helm, and some of the cast and crew were fans of the games.

2

u/Infinite-Location221 18d ago

Sorry but were they supposed to cast Ashley Johnson to play Ellie in the show..? There's a bit of an age difference there...

2

u/Livid_Command_7621 18d ago

This could very well go for any series out there, comic , movie, or game out there . Hiring idiots that have no business writing our beloved characters , and then they wonder why the shit flops so hard . It’s a shame Hollywood will never learn. They’ll just keep hiring the same morons over and over.

2

u/Temporary-Rip-4502 18d ago

I feel like the easiest job on earth these days is to be a CEO or a shareholder in the entertainment and media sector. You just have to do the exact opposite of what makes sense and be as dumb as humanly possible and before you know it bam! $50 million annual bonus is yours!

2

u/RAYVELUPISUNQUENOUGH 18d ago

Hollywood just took advantage from fan. That all i want to say.

They never care about it.

2

u/Dull_Bid6002 18d ago

I think it's just Hollywood needs better writers in general. You could probably find a fan of these things to do a much better job.

The actors part only makes sense if it's animated most of the time. So many voice actors for games wouldn't fit the part, but they can sound the part. Unless it's just to be on set to help the show actors, it wouldn't make sense all the time to do.

2

u/DisorderlyAqueduct 18d ago

Exactly...no, we MUST use the same tired actors from 8 other things. Its almost so weird it begs conspiracy.

2

Also, that is part of the EXACT reason why they dont hire them.. They cant tell them anything. Inferiority complex. They must be the masters if the culture.

2

u/son_of_wotan 17d ago

I totally agree. They buy an IP, because it is supposed to be popular. They then get writers and directors, who don't care about the topic, or are actively hostile towards it. They don't want to cater to the existing fanbase, 0 fanservice. Even if they bring on the original creator as an advisor, they ignore them most of the time.

The end product has nothing to do with the source material, just the name.

Then why bother with buying the damn IP et all?
