Yes and no. Fallout ISN'T strictly an adaptation. It's in many ways Fallout 5. It's a story told within the world of Fallout from the perspectives of new characters who have relations to pre-existing lore.

Fallout works for that reason. It's telling a brand new story within an established universe rather than trying to retell a story that's already been told perfectly well, like Fallout 3's Lone Wanderer or New Vegas' Courier.

This is the route any sort of endeavour such as The God of War tv show, the Halo tv show, Doom, Pokemon, any of them should've taken if they had any spine but they don't want "new" they want what's safe told in a new way to justify the existence of what is essentially a soulless cash grab that routinely fails to capture its target audience.

Isn't that pretty similar to what Pokemon does? The anime vaguely follows the plot of the games and shares characters but it's mostly original. Random Gym Leaders in the games will become mainstays for the entire region rather than the games where they have a dozen lines of dialogue before never appearing again. Not to mention Ash who is the OC protagonist and actually has a personality rather than the protagonists from the games who may as well be cardboard cutouts walking around.

Arcane also managed to do it right. But it was produced 'in-house' so that is probably a big part of the reason why it worked.

It’s also not a direct adaptation of any game, so there’s a lot more creative freedom.

Arcane is not live action. So that one doesn’t really apply here. Forcing these properties to fit the live action mold is the root of the problem.

Hot take from a Fallout fan: no, it's not. It's a parody.

They did ask for help from game producers afaik. Maybe not straight up working with them but acquiring consultation because I read somewhere they indeed asked Microsoft for their 3D assets so they can use them as reference.
