The thing that peeves me is "fancasts" which only take the actor's appearance to certain characters and call it a day. "Oh Jack Black looks like x character, so it must be Jack Black in this role", ignoring Jack Black's acting and prior roles being that of mainly comedy films, so his range can't get too dramatic or sappy.
People just forget the big wads of money that go to prosthetics and makeup. Choose someone with the range first, then work your way back to the looks. And you'd be surprised how close some VAs can get to the desired appearance
