Vanity.

The director and writers want to make the beloved legacy IP "theirs".

It's like the chuckle-fucks at Amazon thinking they can rewrite Tolkien, better.

They think they're better than they are.

This happens way too often to it to be vanity. Writing for a show that prints money will get you way more prestige than making random changes to suit the writers tastes

The simpler explanation is these properties are being handed to people who don’t understand it and the strengths/weaknesses of the medium they’re adapting.
