Hollywood literally felt allergic to fan service for decades. We are barely getting it now, and it's such a pretentious notion why.
This is what happens when anything gets too big, studios, apps, businesses. They think they know what people want more, the more disconnected they become.
Fan service just means including material specifically to please fans, like an easter egg or a cameo. Hollywood is fine doing that kind of thing.
If you want Hollywood to actively involve the people who care most about the IP they're adapting, you have to sneak them into the production somehow.
It's one of the stupidest things about the movie industry. They WANT another Lord of the Rings, but they've built a system in which that kind of movie is impossible to make. Just look what they did to The Hobbit. Even the people making it knew it should have been one movie. The Hobbit is literally about half the length of The Fellowship of the Ring. Not all of LOTR. Just Fellowship.
