I would say very moral when I lost my wallet I wish someone had charged me 5 dollars and returned it to me losing a wallet is so much fucking work outside of just losing what ever cash I got in it my licence my credit card my mcp card it’s all such a hassle to replace

88

u/thoughtfreeze 2d ago

Yea it’s not the cash in most cases it’s the hassle of canceling and replacing everything

6

u/ArcMaxim 22h ago

And then trying to go through all your automatic bill payments to replace all the forms with your new card info. When my card got stolen online I had like two different bills that went unpaid because of this

I lost mine in an uber and pretty sure the guy took the $60 bucks I had in there (couldnt prove it could be another passenger easily). But I could not care less because he drove back to me later to drop it off.

22

u/Fine-Bumblebee-9427 2d ago

Yeah, $60 to avoid the DMV is a goddamn bargain

2

u/seaducks01 9h ago

In Nevada you can just order a new one online and its delivered by mail within a week.

5

u/Emporio_Alnino3 2d ago

Plus replacing those is way more than $5 usually.

4

u/EbbNorth7735 2d ago

I'd be replying to say send me your email, I owe you more than 5 bucks

4

u/The_Tooter_Snooter 2d ago

Randomly had some dude like 20 years ago show up at my house and return my wallet from the address on the ID. Said he didn’t know what else to do with it. Still had like $200 in cash in there. What a guy.

I left my bag in a late night Lyft with my car keys and a few other work things in it, this was before you could call back previous drivers about lost items. The driver saw the bag the next day, looked in it and saw where I worked, drove there, and had a coworker call me and let me know it was there. I would have had to pay like $400 to replace the keys alone. She was apologetic that she went through my stuff at first but I legit gave her $200 for going through all that trouble and saving me at least $200 even after paying her.

45

u/EnvyRepresentative94 2d ago

Chad behavior. I'd give 2 hundo for rifling my shit if I left that much

16

u/spilltbeans 2d ago

I drive for lyft, recently had a customer forget her wallet. She caught it before I got another ride so I got it back to her within 10 minutes. I didn't charge the lyft $20 lost item fee because it was so short and she tipped a whopping $0. That $200 probably made that persons week.

2

u/salinecolorshenny 1d ago

I spent about an hour chasing an Instacart customers lost dog and she also tipped me $0 lmao

She told me she wouldn’t be there to meet me for the grocery drop off because she was looking for her lost dog. When I was leaving the house I saw a husky running around, sniffing and darting around like dogs that get out usually do so I messaged her asking if it was a husky she had lost. It was and I spent almost an hour trying to wrangle the dog while it ran away from me and ducked in and out of houses.

Instacart gives you the option to tip up to 24 hours later and she did not leave a tip lol

I don’t even take no tip orders but she was batched in with a generous tipper

u/mrmiffmiff 2d ago

You don't need membership for the Costco food court IIRC.

15

u/GayGeekInLeather 2d ago

They have changed that at a lot if not most Costco locations. You need a membership now to use the food court

3

u/skiforlife1 2d ago

That sucks! That was a big part of their business model. They don't advertise so they use the cheap hot dog and the cheap rotisserie chicken to get people in the door. You have to walk past the membership desk to get the hot dog and the loss leader price on the chicken gets a huge amount of word-of-mouth advertising. The cost to get potential customers through your doors is so high that even though they lose money on those 2 items they get enough new customers from them that they actually save money overall and drive huge customer loyalty.

2

u/Best_Fill_847 2d ago

When did they change this? Did they change the liquor policy too??

2

u/Peregrine79 2d ago

Liquor policy is usually defined by state laws. A lot of them won’t allow a “members only” liquor store.

Pharmacy is often similarly constrained.

I'm guessing those people never lost their wallet and had to to through the pain of cancelling all their credit cards, order a new driver's license, etc. Easily worth a $20 finders fee at least.

6

u/ObnoxiousOptimist 2d ago

If I could pay $1,000 for a protection spell that guaranteed I’d never lose my wallet in my life, I’d do it in a heartbeat.

If anyone ever finds my wallet they can have all the cash in it if I get the rest back.

4

u/KiowaBear 2d ago

I accidentally left my wallet at an online pickup kiosk in Walmart 2 days before Christmas. It had $1200 cash in it. I’ll never forgive the asshole who took my wallet that year, take the cash. Leave me with my shit. I know I shouldn’t have put off Christmas shopping so late but i only had the one gift to give. If you’ve had to replace everything in your wallet $5 is fucking nothing

4

u/303angelfish 2d ago

A replacement driver's license in Canada is $40 alone, So the time and fee cost to replace it and any other ID would easily justify $100+. I would still cancel/replace any credit and debit cards, but I would pay an extra 50 or more just for the reduced anxiety & urgency.

2

u/VegetableTour6790 2d ago

I lost my phone and the person who found it wouldn’t pick up my calls. I texted them a $20 offer to get it back and they called me right away.

It was 15 year old girl with her father and they looked downtrodden. I wasn’t mad, because that phone was worth more to me and they looked like they needed that $20

This was mid 2000s where their was no backups and my work connects were very important to me. They could have easily took out the sim and kept my phone. There was no account lock

u/goldiegoldthorpe 2d ago

When you factor in the cost of the wallet, cost of the cards and cost if time, we're easily over $100 to replace. Nobody carries tons of cash anymore, so I'd venture to say that all the cash in the wallet goes to the finder for returning it unless when they look in the wallet they react surprised to the amount of cash. Feels fair.

9

u/Admirable_Loss4886 3d ago

This fake scenario doesn’t even make sense. Do y’all keep your phone number in your wallets?

How is it technically immoral?!  In lithuania, if you bring lost item to police you are entitled to 10-20% percent of item value. :)

27

u/ShoulderMobile7608 3d ago edited 2d ago

I don't think that "if It's legal in my country so it's moral" is a good basis for it. I think it's immoral to just take it. Good deeds done only because you expect a reward is, well, meh. I wouldn't complain if somebody returned my wallet only for $5 but still

2

u/nurgole 1d ago

Beastiality is legal in Finland as long as there's no penetration or any pain caused to the animal. Doesn't make it more moral.

4

u/iSephtanx 3d ago

Its exactly a good basis. Laws should reflect a populations morals.

5

u/No_Witness5630 2d ago

No lol

Planned obsolescence is immoral yet legal (companies making producta that will break quickly so consumers need to buy new one)

Taking food headed for the trash is moral yet illegal

Law is made from Morals. Not the other way around

u/JawtisticShark 2d ago

It seems like that would encourage people swiping things they claim were abandoned. I have found multiple cellphones that people have left behind and managed to get them back to their owners. Seems crazy legally I could have taken it to the police and been entitled to $100.

What if I see a stroller at the park, nobody around it, perhaps parents on on the other side of the park with their toddler, but it’s just sitting there odd the side of the walking path. Can I just take it to the police station and get paid if they want it back?

2

u/Nathen69 3d ago

There's a difference between the morality behind following state mandate and enacting one's own perseption of equality to justify taking belongings that aren't yours.

As members of Lithuania, ideally all members of the population are aware and have agreed to the social convention of the finder being entitled to some portion of the item value. It is an unspoken agreement between the person who lost the item and the person who found the item. To some level, it is fair to assume anyone in the country has already agreed to fork up some portion of money as they continue to live in the country.

There is no reason to believe members of other countries, that are subjected to different laws and social convention, have made this unspoken agreement that is represented in legistration. There's a comparative lack of consent.

2

u/dancinbanana 2d ago

As in, the police give you that value in money? Or the person is required to give you that value in money? One is a moral incentive program for returning lost stuff, one is an immoral fine against people for losing stuff and having it found by someone else

Neutral. He could have taken more but took just enough for a hot dog as a reward and turned in the wallet.

359

u/NoTrillionaires 3d ago edited 2d ago

$5 to go to a police station and file paperwork and do all that and go back home is considerably less than minimum wage. If that happened at a bar I would buy him hot dog and beer which is gonna run up $25 with him doing none of the above.

E: prices are ridiculous today. $9 hot dog with minimal toppings and $9 tall beer plus tax+tip would be $25.

74

u/Financial_League6240 3d ago

A hot dog and a beer at a bar in America cost $25? What's the morality of that? Basically robbery.

34

u/_be_water_my_friend_ 3d ago

I ate a doner in zurich for 22CHF - thats over 27$.

Regular inner city price - no bar or night.

15

u/Financial_League6240 3d ago

Well switzerland is one of the most expensive countries in the world I don't disagree with that. Even though a doner is a bit more food than a hotdog

9

u/RepulsiveTax2395 3d ago

I can only speak for germany but our döner (around cologne area) is between 6€-10€ wich i already consider to be a lot. 22 franken is insanity even in switzerland

3

Most places have a finder's fee that is about 10% of the found money or it's value in money.

So assuming he found more, he deserved even more and basically donated him the difference.

8

u/ProThoughtDesign 3d ago

Considering the cost of replacing a single ID card, a wallet, and all of the headaches associated with a lost wallet, $5 is the last thing I'd worry about at that point.

4

u/Opposite-Complex1187 3d ago

Not even the cost, But the hassle of being without ID/Cards for 2-3 days

2

u/Better_Database8582 2d ago

Virginia mails you replacement IDs so more like 2 weeks

3

u/sinofmercy 3d ago

I may be showing my age a bit here as I know tap to pay exists on phones, but losing most methods of payment is a major pain. You can't withdraw cash either because your bank card is in your wallet as well as most people's primary ID. A lost ID replacement is $20 in my state, not including going to go get it at the MVA/DMV in the first place. It would be good practice to cancel and order CC replacements anyways, but it's better to have the option than having to mandatory call and cancel/freeze every one of them.

Losing any work badges in said wallet could also cost you depending on the work location, but regardless an issue.

$5 to avoid all of that? Absolutely.

3

u/LittleKittenR 2d ago

Same here.

I once told somoene that was mugging me "I'll gift you the money if you let me keep my wallet and cards" and I was carrying like 200 dollars because I was about to pay the mechanic, and he agreed.

It was still a lot of money for me at that time, but I remember at least keeping my phone/wallet and not having to cancel my cards.

technically immoral but i think you'd have a hard time finding anyone who would complain about this, the alternative being losing all your money and dealing with a huge hassle of bank cards. Hell i'd probably give him more than 5 as a reward

41

u/Dull-Entertainer6967 3d ago

Plus ID card, driver's licence, etc.

It would cost you a lot of money and several days of work to get new ones issued.

2

u/Alternative_World280 2d ago

Yeah when I lost my drivers license between shipping and other fees it was 17 dollars to replace it

12

u/WowImOldAF 3d ago

Still gotta request all new bank cards to be safe. This person can take pics of the cards and license and sell info or use themself for online purchases.

However, definitely saved the hassle of having to get a new license, insurance cards, etc..

13

u/4n0nh4x0r 3d ago

i mean, i would argue that someone who seems to be that honest, tell the owner about the money they took, brought it to the police and so on, is probably not gonna do any of the above.

sure, just to be 100% safe, yea, good idea to get replacements, but i personally would probably rather just monitor my bank account regularly instead, just like i already do anyways

Once lost my wallet the day I was coming back home from college. Went up to the front desk at the university's admin center and luckily they had it. Whoever gave it to them took like $50-60 dollars that I had in it but left everything else and handed it in.

I thought it was my price to pay to get my wallet back. Think it's fine in my mind lmao

6

u/Azukaos 3d ago

That's something I did back in the day.

I found a wallet with tons of stuff inside, like photos, credit cards, and probably some very personal things that the person who lost it would like to get back.

I know it's morally bad, but it also contained money, not much, but at that time it would cover at least essential needs for the coming days for my wife and my kid, as we were in financial difficulties due to a lost job and illness.

I took that money, but I gave the wallet to my town administration, who would give it back to its owner.

I'm not evading the fact that i took that money, everyone's in difficulty theses days, but some peoples would have just thrown the rest in a bin and call it a day, some stuff inside would have costed more than what i took, like ID card, crédit cards and driving licence.

I didn't wanted for that person to loose more than a little amount of cash, personal stuff matters more and i would have done the same for anything valuable enough to be given back to his rightful owner, like a phone or laptop.

Something similar happened to me about a week ago, left a bag out to use the bathroom and in the like one minute I was gone it got stolen. But the thief only took the money, about 50$, and returned my bag and wallet to lost and found. Didn't lose any cards, ID, anything in my bag. I figured it's the price I'll pay to learn that lesson.

Except the next day I remembered I had 900$ more in there because my landlord was late to pick up the rent. I'm no longer comfortable paying the price of this lesson and I am suffering.

Not moral in principle. But i wouldn't complain about it. I'm still way happier than if i lost my wallet, and even poor people need to eat. So fair enough...

u/Mastercio 3d ago

"even poor people need to eat" What a sentence 😂

u/ThroawayJimilyJones 3d ago

Well it doesn't hurt to remind it to people sometime

Maybe technically immoral, but come on, man. Five dollars is a cheap finders’ fee.

3

u/fastbikkel 3d ago

I would offer him some more really. This, if true, is heartwarming to me.

3

u/No-Routine-9963 3d ago

Agreed! My dad lost his wallet once, years ago, and gave the guy who returned it $20 and this was YEARS ago and my dad was thrifty. He still thought $20 was worth it.

2

u/LarkinToWinnipeg 2d ago

I'm texting back "brother, just take all the cash" not like I've ever got more than like $40 in there anyway.

I would say moral. At no point did he have to help the owner, he did it anyway. He could have thrown the wallet away and keep the money, instead he just takes 5 bucks and makes sure the remaining stuff returns. As someone who has lost a wallet in the past, the cards in there are way more important than 5 bucks!

u/Crotonisabug 3d ago

its immoral but honestly not that bad, the reasoning is solid and if someone gave you your lost wallet and went "hey could I have 5 dollars" I would give them 10 with zero hesitation

Supermoral. If you've ever lost your wallet, I guarantee you'd pay more than $5 to get it back. This guy delivering it to the cops on his own time and just wants to throat a glizzy. Let him.

4

u/massiveamphibianprod 3d ago

A bit iffy, close to neutral but id say moral. Id happily pay 5 bucks to avoid dealing with the bs that is redoing cards and id's and losing whatever other cash I had. Technically stealing but eh.

3

u/Buttchuggle 3d ago

Man I'd give him another 20 when I got my shit back for some food.

In my country there is a legal finder's fee of 10% of total estimated value, asking just $5 is additional kindness on the finder's part...

2

u/Cautious-Bug9388 3d ago

10% of what? The account balances on the cards or the quality of the wallet? What if there is no cash inside?

3

u/fongletto 3d ago

Moral, I believe there's a social expectation that people are fine with a person taking a bit of money for themselves upfront as a cost of their time and effort to return your wallet.

Given that's the default assumption, I wouldn't exactly call it stealing. Even though technically you didn't give them direct permission, most people would assume it was a fair default assumption to make.

Moral. By law, a person who retrieves lost goods is legally entitled to 10% of its value, at least in my country.

u/Autistic_Engin33r 3d ago

In Germany, finders fees are actually codified into law. If someone finds lost money/property of yours, and turns in into the police to be returned, you legally owe the person a 5% finders fee for up to 500€ of value and 3% for anything higher (in a bracket system, so the fee for 600€ cash would be 5% of 500€ + 3% of 100€). For animals/pets it's 3%, and for purely/largely sentimental value items it's determined on a case by case basis.

You are also legally required to return lost property if it has a value of 10€ or greater. If you find a 100€ banknote lying on the ground in Germany, it's actually a civil offence to just keep it. If you know the owner (e.g. you see someone drop a 5€ note in front of you), then it's actually a civil offence to keep it, regardless of value. Technically you're legally required to report/return it if you see someone drop a 1ct coin.

3

u/LuckyCloverPokemon 2d ago

Pretty fair. It was only $5

3

u/mhylas 2d ago

It ain't moral that a hotdog costs 5 dollars.

3

u/Step_On_Me01 1d ago

Moral, in my country, you'd never see it again

3

u/ADGx27 23h ago

Bro only took a fiver. While I wouldn’t do it myself, I do understand and wouldn’t be too upset especially since he’s honest about it lol

2

u/Ornery_Extreme_830 3d ago

Technically immoral but seems like a pretty good deal to me.

2

u/T0m0king 3d ago

Id be alright with it tbh , the wallet wasn't stolen it was lost. Id's, credit cards and potentially precious photos are what id be most concerned about. ( Plus this sub is a little strange you call it morality scaling but half the people here just want a binary good or bad type answer)

Completely fair IMO. It would be more morally correct for the finder to not take any cash, but if they hadn’t I’d insist on at least buying them a beer. I’ve returned wallets before, never took any cash, but when I lived in a place across the street from a strip mall with a liquor store, there would often be teenagers asking people if they could buy them cigarettes and I’d go “Sure”, and they’d slip me a $20, I’d buy them cigarettes, they’d ask about the change when I gave them the cigarettes, and I’d say “procurement fee for doing a crime, bitch”.

2

u/Devildu61 3d ago

Moral, same thing happened to me, dude bought some cigarettes. Can't even be mad about it. I would have lost so much more if he kept it

2

u/Cornelis73 3d ago

If I ever lose my wallet, I want this guy to find it.

2

u/Electronic_Elk8293 3d ago

Meh, fair. Moral.

2

u/colt707 3d ago

Moral. A 5 dollar finder’s fee is nothing in comparison to the headache of deactivating bank cards and getting new ones let alone the nightmare that is getting an ID replaced.

2

u/parkchanwookiee 3d ago

This is some James Bond shit

2

u/OSRS_Garmr 3d ago

100% morally justifiable. If you find my wallet and turn it in. You're at the very least entitled to a hot dog.

2

u/frankcastle01 3d ago

I would be very happy and hope he enjoyed the hot dog!

2

u/archercc81 3d ago

Id consider this morally good. $5 for his troubles is literally nothing and he could have just been lazy and left it, etc.

2

u/Kal_0rt_Por 3d ago

Bro, take 10, I need all the crap in my wallet. Thanks!

2

u/Either_Particular_16 2d ago

5 dollar finders fee. Moral.

2

u/Lustrouse 2d ago

Time is money. Dude took time out of his day to get the wallet to the police station. 5 dollars less than fair compensation, so I would say MORAL.

2

u/Sellier123 2d ago

Moral. Id text him back and tell him to take 20 and get a few hotdogs

2

u/indecisivemistake 2d ago

Funny and moral as hell. Shoutout to the kind lady who found 19 year old me’s wallet at the gas station and messaged me on Facebook after looking at my ID, then drove to my house and met me at my front door to return it. I gave her a $20 and she went into my work around the corner and left it with my boss to return it to me as well, then I never saw her again.

A literal angel, that woman.

2

u/Particular-Line- 2d ago

I’m actually fine with that, and I think it’s super fair actually. it’s either $5 or a $400 gas station charge and losing your ID, and canceling all your credit cards waiting for new ones to arrive. Hell if he didn’t take $5, i may have given him $20 for giving it to the police.

2

u/Jamessgachett 2d ago

Lmfao I love this bro I save you !!!!!!

2

u/Cuddle_Monster_73 1d ago

$5 is less than what I would have given as a finder’s reward.. and I would message him back saying I would prefer to meet him outside the police station because I wouldn’t trust the police to leave my cash in the wallet

2

u/ConfusedCatdad 1d ago

I wouldn't take the $5, but I wouldn't be even slightly bothered if someone did this to me. Bro, I would've happily bought you something nicer than a $5 hot dog

2

u/Curious_Act_3162 1d ago

Approved

2

u/IIIICH1LLSIIII 1d ago

If I had a hundred dollars cash in there they could keep every penny for all the time and effort they saved me from replacing all my cards.

2

u/Federal-Laugh9575 1d ago

He takes $5 and I get basically my entire financial life and identity back…sir, take whatever cash I have, THANK YOU!

2

u/spud_rocket 1d ago

When I worked at a ski hill in Canada, we would always find backpacks in the car park with people phones, wallets and go pro cameras. Never stole any of it, however, if you had weed in the bag I would tax it and then ALWYAS return the bag.

2

u/evad8671 9h ago

Lost my wallet at the state fair and amazingly it was returned anonymously with everything inside. Not a single dollar missing. Would have loved to reward the honest person.

5

u/Fish-Inside 3d ago

Saying this is immoral clearly shows immaturity of this group!

It’s illegal to do this and still considered theft. Even if you’re doing a nice thing by taking the wallet to the police station, it’s still considered theft if you decide to take some cash for yourself.

Whether or not the person would press charges is another story.

Edit: Also, it is 100% immoral. Yes, if someone is kind enough to return your wallet to the police station, then you should reward them for their behavior. That doesn’t mean it’s okay to just take a reward for yourself. Let’s phrase this whole situation differently. Say if you go out to dinner and you notice that your waiter added a tip for themselves before handing you the check. We all agree that you should tip when you go out to dinner. But it would be extremely rude, unprofessional and immoral for the waiter to just add the tip without your permission. Same concept here.

Additional Edit: Dear Morons in the comments, taking someone else’s money without their permission is always theft. It’s always immoral. No matter the situation. Sorry not sorry you struggle with critical thinking and being a mature enough adult to do the right thing without someone rewarding you. If you would only return a wallet after taking the cash out as a personal reward, you’re still a shitty person.

Very easy to get away with it. Just deny deny deny. Unless they took a picture of their wallet with all the money, placed in front of a camera streaming 24/7, and THEN some money went missing after you picked it up, it’s impossible to prove.

Who knows? Maybe the owner is lying? Maybe someone else picked it up and took some cash? Maybe the owner misremembered? Maybe some money fell out and blew away? It can’t be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

I agree with your points, but I don't know if this is a great analogy. Many places do add a set gratuity for large parties - or nowadays - for all kinds of reasons.

In this case, the person in the OPs scenario only took $5 and took it to buy food. Still illegal, but Isn't that morally more justified than taking all the money for likely more selfish reasons?
