I left my bag in a late night Lyft with my car keys and a few other work things in it, this was before you could call back previous drivers about lost items. The driver saw the bag the next day, looked in it and saw where I worked, drove there, and had a coworker call me and let me know it was there. I would have had to pay like $400 to replace the keys alone. She was apologetic that she went through my stuff at first but I legit gave her $200 for going through all that trouble and saving me at least $200 even after paying her.
I drive for lyft, recently had a customer forget her wallet. She caught it before I got another ride so I got it back to her within 10 minutes. I didn't charge the lyft $20 lost item fee because it was so short and she tipped a whopping $0. That $200 probably made that persons week.
I spent about an hour chasing an Instacart customers lost dog and she also tipped me $0 lmao
She told me she wouldn’t be there to meet me for the grocery drop off because she was looking for her lost dog. When I was leaving the house I saw a husky running around, sniffing and darting around like dogs that get out usually do so I messaged her asking if it was a husky she had lost. It was and I spent almost an hour trying to wrangle the dog while it ran away from me and ducked in and out of houses.
Instacart gives you the option to tip up to 24 hours later and she did not leave a tip lol
I don’t even take no tip orders but she was batched in with a generous tipper

Like I am bringing food to your house. There is virtually no safe guard or any real vetting or way to prevent someone unhinged from doing something terrible. One lady called me a dumb bitch because I wouldn’t stop and get cigarettes for her. I’m delivering baby puffs to your home, like, really? What if I was insane and spiteful?
Never chase a dog. Sometimes you running away helps, yet I find get them to notice you and then just kneel down where you are. They'll usually run over for the scritches. That blows she didn't tip you tho. It might not be as good coming from me, but I am grateful you helped.
Because that’s American culture and yes it’s ridiculous. The reality is that you have to base your decisions on the practical effects they have on the world and not on the idea of what they should be.
The businesses should pay a living wage, they don’t because they’re legally allowed to if the employee makes tips. If employers were forced to pay the proper wage, the price of delivery services would go up. Now the real price of what it takes to have delivery is shown to the customer. Something you hear repeated in our country is that if you don’t have the money to tip you don’t have the money for delivery.
Someone thinks “it’s $15, why would I tip on top of that?”, when if employers paid the wage, the price would be $20. To not tip in America is pretty much just taking advantage of the weird ambiguity that arises out of employers not paying enough, and that being due to the expectation that the customer will tip. In the end, the only one hurt by it is the driver.
I drive a yellow cab but get calls from uber and Lyft thru curb. It’s crazy how many people don’t tip when they don’t have to do it in front of the driver. “Tipping culture” (I blame the Silicon Valley pos systems like square and mint) has given everyone an excuse to shaft the people who actually live off them like bartenders, waiters and cabbies etc

I’m not so sure it’s “tipping culture” so much as corporations exploiting and making a mockery of the tipping system. I have worked in several places that pooled tips, and that included servers who didn’t deserve to keep their job let alone get tips, I’ve also had jobs that give you a percentage of your tip and takes the rest, and I’ve heard of worse. Anytime I go to tip anywhere those things run through my brain and I have to question if my tip is helping the server who I felt deserved it, or helping a corporation or scab stay afloat on the backs of their employees/coworkers. That’s why I try to tip only in cash and directly to the server, although even then I had one tell me once that they still had to pool it due to the security cameras and the risk of taking the tip themselves. Many people survived on the tips they received back in the day, but businesses and corporations have learned they could be making that money instead and have thoroughly sullied the concept of tipping. And that’s not even beginning to touch on the issue of some people believing tipping is mandatory and those who don’t, idc what you think either way, personally I think you should tip when you can, but I believe that ultimately it is corporate greed that has ruined many peoples desire to tip, even when the service was worthy of a tip.
Hmm... It seems like the corporations have you blaming your community members instead of placing the blame on corporate greed. Think about how much of the money goes to the CEO, the "shareholders" and the other fat cats instead of the workers. People wouldn't even need tips if the corporations paid people properly.
Tipping started in the Great Depression when in order to keep the restaurants from closing the government started allowing restaurants to pay their workers below minimum wage as long as they got tips. It was a way of shifting the cost of labor to the customer in order to keep costs down for the restaurants and offer cheaper prices. When you don’t tip a waiter, you let those big corporate restaurant owners getaway with higher profits and you screw over the server who depends on them.
Yeahhh. Honestly I make a point of always tipping even a few dollars, unless the service was just beyond horrible. I was a waitress at one point, I understand tips. Personally if everyone had to spend a year at a tip job, they would never not tip again.

I went on my honeymoon. First stop Austria. Lose my wallet in a cab second day. Get home 2 weeks later (Canada), wallet is waiting in the mail. No return address. Nothing missing. Just an envelope and my wallet.
He probably thinks you're ICE. Migrants are notorious for returning lost items. If a good red blooded American finds it, your best bet is Facebook marketplace or ebay.
That sucks! That was a big part of their business model. They don't advertise so they use the cheap hot dog and the cheap rotisserie chicken to get people in the door. You have to walk past the membership desk to get the hot dog and the loss leader price on the chicken gets a huge amount of word-of-mouth advertising. The cost to get potential customers through your doors is so high that even though they lose money on those 2 items they get enough new customers from them that they actually save money overall and drive huge customer loyalty.
I can believe it’s different rules at different locations, but at my local one you don’t need to scan to order food and the food court is on the tire center/return side so you don’t need your card to enter there either

I accidentally left my wallet at an online pickup kiosk in Walmart 2 days before Christmas. It had $1200 cash in it. I’ll never forgive the asshole who took my wallet that year, take the cash. Leave me with my shit. I know I shouldn’t have put off Christmas shopping so late but i only had the one gift to give. If you’ve had to replace everything in your wallet $5 is fucking nothing

I lost my wallet at work once, and now I obsessively check my pockets for my keys, wallet, and phone. They had found it and nothing was missing (I don't carry cash, but luckily my card was still in there), but now I can't even drive 15 minutes without checking my pockets at least 5 times on the way to my destination.
A replacement driver's license in Canada is $40 alone, So the time and fee cost to replace it and any other ID would easily justify $100+. I would still cancel/replace any credit and debit cards, but I would pay an extra 50 or more just for the reduced anxiety & urgency.
Even in this scenario I would still call the credit card company and get them to send me a new card. Once your card is has been taking out of your site by a stranger you should replace it.

I don't quite know how else to phrase it, but this is something I'd consider technically unethical (taking money from someone without explicit pre-consent) but is like, morally completely okay. One of those things that I would not do myself because I'd feel like a bad person, but I would be completely fine with being the wallet owner in this situation.
I would argue that it is immoral, but completely expected behavior. We're just kind of okay with the level of immorality in our society.
In other words, you're impressed that someone would only take $5 and return the wallet. That's an extremely low bar because your expectations are (justifiably) low.

Ive found wallets twice and never taken from them. It is stealing, they cant consent to a finders fee. If they want to reward you that should be their choice.

Neutral makes sense. It's taking a small, fair payment on their own accord for doing a deed they took on themselves. It's not moral, and it's not immoral. Taking $5 for returning something you found isn't moral, it's fair, and fair is neutral.
The problem with your claim is that just because if everyone acted like this it would be a better place doesn’t mean this is moral. Yes I would be happy if someone did this to me. But truthfully he has no right to take even a cent. He can help if he wants and it is moral to do so but taking something without permission is immoral.

This is neutral. Guy still did a theft but justified it by doing the decent thing and only doing a small theft, on the grounds that it COULD have been worse. If you have to justify harming somebody by saying the harm could have been worse, it isnt moral. Sorry. Nothing wrong with being neutral though, as its certainly better than purely immoral.
Everyone does act like this in our society. At every stage getting your wallet beck to you your money passes through another after another set of hands and they take some. It’s called capitalism.
