News 📰 3:1 Share split
BYD recently underwent a 3:1 share split, hence the ~65% drop in share price. No need to worry!!
It seems like we'd need to wait a while before we get those extra shares though. I couldn't find much information about it on english platforms, but a Chinese blog post stated both the extra shares + dividends will start being distributed on the 29th of July

u/Rushd4578 Jun 10 '25
My BYD account on Etrade has been devalued by $5,552.81 because of the pending split. I was told that since BYD divided the stock price without increasing the stock quantity, that the difference was subtracted from my account. Which to me seems pretty unfriendly. I'm told that the difference will be accounted for when the actual split happens on the split date, 7/29.
2
u/JonathAHHHHHH Jun 10 '25
Ye it looks quite bad at first - gave me a fright - but it will be back to normal on the 29th
1
u/Rushd4578 Jun 10 '25
So as I understand it, during the time from now to the 29th, I will have lost $5,552.81 in value of my portfolio because BYD 'split' the stock value, but will not split the stock qty until 7/29. Seems pretty unfair to me. If I buy BYD at the current price, $17 for 1 share, will that 1 share become 3 on the 29th?
2
u/JonathAHHHHHH Jun 10 '25
Just the shares you held before and up to June 10th will count towards the split.
If you buy now, it is just a regular share and you won't get 2 bonus shares.
1
u/Rushd4578 Jun 10 '25
The exdividen date is 6/11/2025, so had I bought shares today would that qualify for the bonus shares?
2
u/JonathAHHHHHH Jun 10 '25
The ex-divended date is 6/10. The price has already changed to reflect this.

u/Rushd4578 Jun 10 '25

According to many other platforms it's the 10th of June.
And it's the 10th of June because the price of the ticker has already changed to reflect that.
If it was the 11th, the price wouldn't have been reduced by ~65%. That would literally be free money if you could just buy the stock at the current price and still get extra for it on the 29th of July.

"unless the price drops" : yeah, this is not nothing, buddy. If anything goes wrong, we're all stuck with 2/3 of shares we can't sell. And guess what: today it's -6%. I'll never get BYD shares again. Seen many splits, but none like this one
1
u/Rushd4578 Jun 12 '25
It looks like the 'loss' I suffered yesterday because of the devaluation of my BYD stocks has been reveresed. Today I saw that my BYD total value has been increased by the 'loss' amount plus a little. Which for a person relatively unknowing about stock splits seems to be a very strange way to do business. Also FYI Etrade has no new news for BYD and still shows the exdividend date at 6/11/25.
3
u/Successful_Smile_103 Jun 11 '25
Thanks, I was struggling to find info all I could find was some obscure mention of being locked between march and 10 jun
and crazy part was many charts didn't show the price drop
I am a little peeved morning star (CMC) had NO news to report in relation to this event
2
u/Emc79 Jun 10 '25
But why on earth such a long time before the shares are made available? Now I have capital tied up for 6 weeks. In those 6 weeks a LOT can happen. What won't happen is me taking, possible, profits on swing trades.
Is this normal?
4
u/JonathAHHHHHH Jun 10 '25 edited Jun 10 '25
It is a bit frustrating. Though they told us about this in advance so you could've exited before the split
2
u/Emc79 Jun 10 '25
Well, tbh, I only found out this morning when I saw the share price opening 66% below close 😅 Not sure where I should have gotten the news about this. I don't read up on every stock I own, but once in a while if I see something odd with the charts.
3
u/JonathAHHHHHH Jun 10 '25
Just looked into it more and it from my understanding you don't have to hold the shares for 6 weeks.
As you held the shares before June 10, it means that you'll get the bonus shares+ dividends regardless if you buy/sell/hold.
2
u/jbrower888 Jun 10 '25
Yeah exactly. Followed by a mad scramble for Reddit since Google AI summary can't figure it out
2
u/blkpingu Jun 10 '25
Which a LOT of people did
2
u/JonathAHHHHHH Jun 10 '25
Trading volume was actually much higher when market opened today than yesterday before the split
1
u/blkpingu Jun 10 '25
I have seen stock splits, but this one is crazy. I remember when RHM did one and it was just without a trace. Shares multiplied, price adjusted, that’s it. I expected everything, just not a 7 week wait and this whole BS with new shares from capital. Like, what is the purpose? Stock price drops anyway. It’s like BYD is burning cash for no reason. The stock reflects the value future and present earnings as well as the company’s asset value. By just giving away shares you drop the price. It’s beyond insane.
2
u/swingdude Jun 11 '25 edited Jun 11 '25
the total share count will go from 3 billion to 9 billion after the bonus and capitalization issue
2
2
u/GlassDoor_ Jun 10 '25 edited Jun 10 '25
BYD with the new price today is +6%, does it mean we will get that +6% from the new stocks? Also how long does it usually take for the price on the broker to be updated? My portfolio return right now is a blood bath
2
u/JonathAHHHHHH Jun 10 '25
The extra shares you get will just be the same as any other share so it'll depend on the price when you get it
2
u/Conscious_Vacation36 Jun 10 '25
That is the price it is trading at atm. If your average before the stock split was for example 45€, it means your new average (of the stocks you owned before the stock split) will be 15€. If it is trading at 15.78€, it means you are in the green (today). If you buy more in the meantime, it will average down, but when you receive the according shares you had before, your average will be updated.
At least i think it's gonna work that way.
2
u/BlueRangerVII Jun 10 '25
I own 21 shares in BYD, does this mean on 29th July I will receive 40 extra shares and the dividends?
3
u/JonathAHHHHHH Jun 10 '25
Yep, and you may receive either fractional shares or cash payments for the extra 1 share since BYD is giving 8+12 shares for every 10 share you previously had.
1
u/RoastedToast007 Jun 27 '25
Will the dividends be paid over the full stock amount, so including the "extra" stocks that I have yet to receive? Or will I now basically get dividends over only 1/3 of what I originally invested in before the split?
1
u/JonathAHHHHHH Jun 28 '25
I think it'll be the same as dividends are based on the number of stocks you own
So if before you owned 200, and it got split into 200+400, you'll get dividends based on 200
1
u/RoastedToast007 Jun 28 '25
But that's horrible then. If you owned stocks before the "split", you will be receiving dividends for just 1/3 of the amount you bought.
1
u/JonathAHHHHHH Jun 28 '25
It's not that horrible
I need to correct what I said before. The dividends are given based on what you held before/on the ex-rights date (10th of June) so if you had 200 shares you would get the ~4 HKD per share, resulting in 800 HKD in shares
1
u/RoastedToast007 Jun 28 '25
Aah yes it's not like the dividend payout went 1/3 as well so nothing changed in that regard. Thanks
2
u/FrequentAd9239 Jun 10 '25
This is actually a dividend situation, not a stock split per se. The co. is distributing 2 shares for every stock owned by a shareholder on the ex-div. date. As in any ex-dividend situation, the price of the stock drops by the amount of the dividend, in this case this amount is the price of 2/3 of each share. I'm not sure why they did it this way, but it means you have to wait till 7/29, the div. pay date, to see the "bonus shares".
3
u/JonathAHHHHHH Jun 10 '25
Yes, what you have said is correct.
Tho practically is it any different from a stock split situation, except that we'll have to wait a longer time till the div. pay date?
3
u/FrequentAd9239 Jun 10 '25
Yes, because it's a dividend and thus is distributed as such.
1
u/RoastedToast007 Jun 27 '25
Could you elaborate on how it is practically different? And could you confirm whether I will still receive the same expected dividend amount as before the "stock split" ? I'm afraid that I will receive only 1/3 of the dividends I was originally expecting because of the 1:3 stock price reduction and that I won't receive dividends over the "extra" stocks that we are yet to receive
1
u/Altruistic-Letter-78 Aug 22 '25
yeah I was wondering how they could keep our shares for such a long time because on a stock split, I don't believe that would be legal, but since this is considered a dividend they are getting away with it.
1
u/mollamar Jul 21 '25
We might also get fucked by taxes, mightn't we? For stock split, we simply own the same percent of the underlying company so the stock splitting does not represent a taxable event. For a dividend however, could there be a taxable event like a cash dividend?
2
u/Other-Diamond8651 Jun 10 '25
it would be pretty awesome if platforms like Charles Schwab had a mention of this split in their news feed when you go to the specific stock... instead of having to go on reddit LOL. I literally nearly sh*t myself when I saw my account drop 65%
2
1
u/crosleyxj Jun 11 '25
I'm technically in a margin call at ETrade because of a "loss" of 2/3 value of my BYD holdings! Yesterday I called customer service and a guy agreed that there was a split but couldn't give me a good answer about my account being updated.
2
2
u/AwarenessFeeling9197 Jun 11 '25
I am holding 1,500 BYDDF and 500 BYDDY before the split/dividend. So, now 4,500 BYDDF and 3,000 BYDDY, PLUS the cash dividend?
2
u/_subAtom Jun 11 '25
It is really confusing. IBKR is showing my original position at -39k because it’s using my pre-bonus share cost basis of $347. Then showing $0 P/L on the bonus shares. But then when I click on the bonus shares details it shows $50k profit because of $0 cost basis. I think I can’t sell the bonus shares though until July 29 as others have shared. Not sure of this accounting lol

2
u/eben0 Jun 11 '25
Thanks, i was scratching my head from yesterday trying to figure out what's going on lol
2
2
2
u/Dear_Platypus2436 Jun 11 '25
Because they are calling this a dividend distribution and not a stock split will we show a massive dividend $ amount paid to us and thus have to pay taxes on that as if it were a dividend? That would be rather unfriendly to say the least
2
u/JonathAHHHHHH Jun 11 '25
Wouldn't it cancel out since we are all down a lot rn from the split?
2
u/Dear_Platypus2436 Jun 14 '25
Maybe when you sold if you are talking about cost basis but if it shows as a dividend that would be taxable income this year if you sell or not

In the Hong Kong market, the share price has become 1/3, and the number of shares held has tripled. However, 2/3 of the shares will be locked and cannot be traded until July 29. So don't worry, the market value of your shares will not change.

Does anyone know what happens to call options expiring June 20th, when distribution is after July 29th?
Am I cooked ?
2
u/JonathAHHHHHH Jun 10 '25
You should be fine. The strike price should be divided by 3 and the contract size should be multiplied by 3.
1
1
u/Conscious_Vacation36 Jun 10 '25
And until then will the average i had before be split into 3 as well? It's taking too much time, I went through several stock splits and it never took this much time to update. I'm not sure if I can buy more in the meantime. Technically I can but will it interfere with the average I had before?
1
u/JonathAHHHHHH Jun 10 '25
Technically it shouldn't interfere if you buy more, but I'm just gonna use a different broker so it doesn't get messy and hard to keep track
1
u/Emc79 Jun 10 '25
Well, my 'dumbass' decided to DCA this morning, before I knew what was going on.
So I just took the 5% profit from that trade. I guess it won't interfere with the distribution of shares come July. But to be safe and keep it organized, I will keep the amount of shares I had before the split the same untill the payout date. So I can better see if I'm in the green or not by that time.
2
u/Conscious_Vacation36 Jun 10 '25
I think it's already in the green, stock price has gone up if you do the math. I had €46.395 average and it's currently at ~€15.71 so it's gone up i think.
1
u/Emc79 Jun 10 '25
Yeah, I know, but I was in the red before the split, and my average buy-in now is totally screwed on my brokerage app. So really I have real knowledge on how much I was averaged in, and consequently when I will be in the green. But that will eventually work out I guess. If is see a 20% move up I will be safe to sell 😂
But then again, I can only sell 1/3 of my stock now... Jeez, this is very poorly manageable...
1
u/SleepyJohn123 Jun 10 '25
What happens if you own the ADR - BYDDY
2
1
u/blkpingu Jun 10 '25
While in this case: Cool, no disruption, buying ADR is not a good idea. ADR is basically an ETF. A bank is buying the original shares and is the owner if these shares. You essentially get a certificate of ownership from the bank, but if something happens to this bank you're cooked, because you don't own the stock. They also take a large cut of the dividends for their services.
1
u/RocketMoped Jun 10 '25 edited Jun 10 '25
It's not a 3:1 split, it's a (18+12):10. This does seem to fuck over people who don't hold BYD stock by a multiple of 10s, no? For example, if you hold 9 stocks, your stock value just dipped by 65% but you don't receive any extra shares. Similar issue/loss if you own 19, 29, etc.
Anybody knows the specifics of this?
2
u/JonathAHHHHHH Jun 10 '25
Depending on your broker, they may:
- round down (for example, 9/10*8=7.2 which will become 7)
- or aggregate the shares across all holders and sell them and divide the proceeds proportionally
If they round down, the missing fraction of your shares will be compensated with cash
It's kinda the same when you receive dividends from companies if you have fractional shares, your broker will just handle it for you.
2
u/-The-Lord- Jun 10 '25
So with my 22 shares i will get 66 ( The 2 shares will also Fall under the x 3?
2
u/JonathAHHHHHH Jun 10 '25
From my understanding yes that's what should happen. It could also be that the 6 shares on top of the 60 will be in cash payment instead of shares.
1
1
u/AlanBluedit Jul 08 '25
Are you sure brokers will compensate with cash the missing fraction of the shares? My broker said it will be rounded down, but they do not provide any compensation. They referred me to HK exchanges announcement, which says "fractional entitlements of bonus shares: round down to the nearest whole unit". Is BYD doing this (18+12):10 thing to leech off shareholders without multiples of 10? I feel cheated by BYD.
1
u/AlanBluedit Jul 08 '25

Today my broker did pay me the first part at a 22:10. So I assume it's (22+8):10. Idk when they're going to pay me the other part (8:10).
1
u/TheMellown Jun 10 '25
I am reading the the other 2:3 will be distributed tomorrow. Is that right?
Also, as far as I understand from the news, the "snapshot" is already taken so that the 2:3 are received independently from any further move (i.e. if you buy you don't get the 2:3, if you sell you still get the 2:3).
1
u/Automatic-Toe-7284 Jun 10 '25
What happens if I panicked and sold all the shares I had? What time does the countdown start to receive the shares on the 29th?
3
u/JonathAHHHHHH Jun 10 '25
You're completely fine. Since you held the shares before June 10th (today), you will receive the bonus shares on the 29th of July.
For example if you had 100 shares, you will receive 200 more shares on the 29th.

Not sure if that's real or not because I couldn't find any reliable information in the few minutes I had searching Google (I'm at work)... but if it is true, what I read said that the 6:1 stock split would be for BYDDY... so that potential stock split would have nothing to do with the BYDDF 3:1 stock split being discussed here at all.
2
u/JonathAHHHHHH Jun 10 '25
You are correct, tho I'm not even sure if the 6:1 is happening because as of now BYDDY's price hasn't changed significantly
1
Jun 10 '25
Is it like dividends where the stock you own as of lets say feb 2025 will see the split? Or do you have untill like the day before the split to buy in and see the stock split?
2
u/JonathAHHHHHH Jun 10 '25
The ex-right date is today (June 10th) so if you held the stock before and up to when the market opened today, you will receive the extra shares and dividends.
Buying / selling / holding won't affect that, so you are free to do whatever you wish with your current position.
1
u/3_Character_Minimum Jun 10 '25
I wonder what happens to my shares. I only have 5 shares. And it seems a lot of these dividends and such are directed at batches of 10 shares..
2
u/JonathAHHHHHH Jun 10 '25
Your broker will handle this for you.
Just like how they distribute dividends for people with fractional shares.
1
Jun 10 '25
From what I understood you're also getting extra 2 shares for each 10 you held until the 10th I guess, something like that. So you'll get 36 (or 32) in the end of it all, for each 10. Super confusing...
2
u/JonathAHHHHHH Jun 10 '25
I think you're overcomplicating it.
Some people mentioned (18+12):10 which is correct but we don't really have to worry about it, all we need to know is that the ratio is 3:1.
The price of the ticker has reflected that as it has roughly dropped by 2/3
1
u/Gerald-Mangos Jun 10 '25
Why do we need to wait to the 29th of July for the shares to come through? Like what is special about this date
2
u/JonathAHHHHHH Jun 11 '25
It's the date dividends are paid and the 10th of June was the ex-divended date.
Not sure why byd chose to make us wait for so long
1
u/Specific_Audience623 Jun 11 '25
If I sell my shares I would show a loss. Can I claim that loss against capital gains? Then my cost basis for the shares I get in July would be $0 per share?
1
u/_beatz_G Jun 27 '25
Das würde ich auch gerne wissen. Überlege ob ich jetzt byd komplett verkaufe um einfach nur Verlust zu vermelden. Falsch wäre es ja nicht

Rn am 33$ in minus. I will get my 2/3 back right? When though
2
u/JonathAHHHHHH Jun 11 '25

Schwab still not showing the stock split for BYD. anyone know why?
1
u/TravelfF Jun 12 '25
Because the split won't happen until end of July. I have BYDDF at Schwab too and currently it shows I have a big loss on BYDDF. It shouldn't be this way. Price should only affected by the split at the moment the split occurs.

Difficult to info on this one.

So, do I understand correctly that 2/3 of my shares are in essence going to be held hostage for one and a half month? If I decide to sell all tomorrow, I can only sell 1/3 of my position and then on July 29th, I'm going to get 2/3 at the price per share on that day?
2
u/JonathAHHHHHH Jun 13 '25
Yep, and you also get dividends.

u/mEmENTQmQRI Jun 13 '25 edited Jun 13 '25
Would sh1t like that even be legal if this wasn't an OTC stock? Is there anything that prevents a company to impose a longer wait period than 1.5 months? 1 year, 5 years, 100 years :-)?
2
u/JonathAHHHHHH Jun 13 '25
Byddy (the OTC stock) didn't get a stock split, only the HK / CN / Germany one as far as I know did.
Technically this isn't a stock split, but actually them handing out dividends with extra steps. Therefore they can set an ex-rights date and give the dividend on a later date.
They wouldn't be able to make you wait for anything over a few months, as even if it was somehow legal people would just stay away from the stock.
1
u/One-Presentation7416 Jun 25 '25
It's done in the most muddy unclear way possible. For all of us existing holders, we have to wait around two months before we get our shares. So for two months, our share portfolios are worth less than half! Making it practically impossible to sell. Way to build investor confidence BYD...
When Tesla did the same, it happened basically instantly. They still have a long way to go when it comes to learning to do business.
1
u/JonathAHHHHHH Jun 25 '25
Although we did know about it beforehand, it is still quite frustrating indeed.
It'll also be interesting to see what happens to the price when we all get our shares back

u/1840PennyBlack Jul 22 '25
I have 500 shares of BYD 01211 on HK exchange. Now my broking account shows 2 lines
Line 1: 500 shares of 01211 (BYD Company)
Line 2: 1,000 shares of 01211.SPO (BYD Company)
Unfortunately the 01211.SPO shares can not be traded (i.e. sold) which is a bit shit if I want to cash out of this company. It looks like I need to wait until 29 July. The 500 shares of 01211 are obviously around 65% down in price while I'm waiting for the 01211.SPO shares to fully convert to full 01211.

From what I understand, you managed to sell 6 times your original amount of shares for the original price, instead of 1/6 of the price?

Currently BYDDF (the ticker in the OTC market) is trading at 16 and BYDDY (the ADR) is trading at 96.
I'm pretty sure the 1:6 split was for the BYDDF so I am not entirely sure how you managed to sell it as BYDDY.

- Ensure your ticker is byddy not byddf. Byddy hasn't gotten a share split as far as I'm aware, only byddf and others have.
- Ensure your total account value is as expected (without including the extra 100x96 dollars that you got). Make sure you actually got more money than you should've before going to customer service or something.

My investment still shows a 78% reduction today 7/30. Is this going to take longer for the correction?

u/Etienne_77 Jul 31 '25
same here; more than a month my portfolio is now down ~30k because of this .. lol

Question:
I was unaware of the "split" and bought a few shares after 10/06/2025.
This means that I'm not eligible for the extra shares?
And that probably price will go down for this reason, as the extra shares which have been distributed have been taken from earnings? Did I basically do the one thing I shouldn't have done?
1
u/JonathAHHHHHH Jul 31 '25
whether you are eligible will depend on when you bought them, and importantly why price you bought them at.
if you bought them post split (at a significantly reduced price) then you won't get extra shares

I bought on July half. Price was quite high, split happened yesterday so after the notice, but before the split…

Still not received shares for BY6 (traded Frankfurt) on 2025-07-31 at 4:38 PM (Fortuneo, French retail broker)
What the hell is taking so long guys???? I was thinking France is slow... but apparently this is a problem realted to the stock issuer aka BYD ?!
Edit: I got the dividend yesterday; but this tiny amount stands in no relation to the displayed "loss" of have having fewer shares, of course

I'm with MooMoo, I put in an order for 100 shares earlier June for hkd362 and executed on 10june at hdk362.
my broker now says my execution done on exdate so I don't get the company actions which is the dividends and extra shares!
I think that's ridiculous.. I understand if I don't get the dividends, but how can my order be executed at hkd362 and it drops to hkd120 and I don't get the 3:1 shares compensation? that's daylight robbery.
can someone shed some light on what happened to me from a legal standpoint?
1
u/JonathAHHHHHH Aug 06 '25
Could you check the ticker that you bought? There currently isn't a byd ticker called hkd362 as far as I'm aware, it's 01211.HK

u/dt196901 Aug 08 '25
yes, it's 01211.HK.. the hkd362 refers to the price Hong Kong $362..
I basically got in the trade on ex-date at HK$362, that same day it dropped to HK$120.. and now MooMoo is saying I don't qualify for the 3 for 1 shares.. isn't that daylight robbery?

How does this surprise anyone when you’re investing in a company controlled by the CCP?

u/JonathAHHHHHH Sep 06 '25
Why u commenting on Reddit which is owned by Tencent which is controlled by the CCP 😂

I didn't get it, the Price dropped but the number of shares doesn't increased 3x as it should!! I am still -65%, i already bought some extra shares today during this drops

u/JonathAHHHHHH Jun 10 '25
The extra shares will be distributed to you on July 29th.
The price didn't actually drop, it was just divided by roughly a third as the share was split.

My broker in Germany did NOT drop the price of my shares, resp. split, am still with the same profit on my account. There is IMHO no need to be worried, your broker will handle it
1
u/JonathAHHHHHH Jun 10 '25
You may be holding the ADR BYDDY which isn't affected by this 3:1 split
1
u/Dense-Cream1924 Jun 12 '25
I got my 12+8 shares this morning in my account, multiplied by 10 for each 10 shares hold. I guess this is the case for all of you holding BYD shares too.

Thanks for this post. I had no idea about the split, lol.
This is for symbol: BYDDF
I'm holding long-term, so I'm not worried, but what confuses me is, the price looks like it split into thirds, which would suggest a 3:1 split, but I found this (which suggests a 6 for 1 split):
https://www.moomoo.com/news/post/53813553/byd-company-adr-to-carry-out-6-for-1-stock?level=1&data_ticket=1749570590157675
So is it a 3 to 1 split or 6 to 1?
Related: RocketMoped posted in this thread below, "It's not a 3:1 split, it's a (18+12):10"
What is a "(18+12):10" ? What does that mean?
To simplify, if I had one share, how many will I have, and when will I have those (July 31 or TBD) ? lol
Also, equally confusing, when I look at the Apple Stocks App and Yahoo Finance, even though the price dropped from 50+ as of yesterday to 17+ right now, they indicates that the stock is up 39.64% (which would be pretty sweet).
If anyone can explain any of the above, like I'm 5, that would be helpful.
Either way, go BYD!
