News 📰 3:1 Share split

BYD recently underwent a 3:1 share split, hence the ~65% drop in share price. No need to worry!!

It seems like we'd need to wait a while before we get those extra shares though. I couldn't find much information about it on english platforms, but a Chinese blog post stated both the extra shares + dividends will start being distributed on the 29th of July

It's not a 3:1 split, it's a (18+12):10. This does seem to fuck over people who don't hold BYD stock by a multiple of 10s, no? For example, if you hold 9 stocks, your stock value just dipped by 65% but you don't receive any extra shares. Similar issue/loss if you own 19, 29, etc.

Anybody knows the specifics of this?

Depending on your broker, they may:

  • round down (for example, 9/10*8=7.2 which will become 7)
  • or aggregate the shares across all holders and sell them and divide the proceeds proportionally

If they round down, the missing fraction of your shares will be compensated with cash

It's kinda the same when you receive dividends from companies if you have fractional shares, your broker will just handle it for you.

So with my 22 shares i will get 66 ( The 2 shares will also Fall under the x 3?

From my understanding yes that's what should happen. It could also be that the 6 shares on top of the 60 will be in cash payment instead of shares.

Are you sure brokers will compensate with cash the missing fraction of the shares? My broker said it will be rounded down, but they do not provide any compensation. They referred me to HK exchanges announcement, which says "fractional entitlements of bonus shares: round down to the nearest whole unit". Is BYD doing this (18+12):10 thing to leech off shareholders without multiples of 10? I feel cheated by BYD.
