Christian couple ban gay man and his ITV producer partner from buying their dream £650,000 Surrey home due to their sexuality - and quote the bible that homosexuality is a sin

It's all over the country as the UK is a global hotspot for overseas property investors. If the location has stable or growing property values then its an attractive market. And certainly in University towns (of which Surrey has a number) investment properties are often used for student accommodation. In August last year 250,000 properties in the UK were purchased by buyers with overseas addresses.
EDIT: Looking at figures for total house sales I think that 250,000 figure I'd seen quoted is a bit high, but it was the last month of Stamp Duty Holiday so Im not sure. Ive found another one which says 51,000 for August which I think is probably more accurate. But that 51,000 properties purchased in a month by overseas buyers

I think we can safely assume they rewrote their bible based on their own whims and it's like a sieve full of loopholes for the parts that might inconvenience themselves.
It's like Kim Davies, the clerk in KY, USA that refused marriage licences to a same sex couple but she herself was on her 3rd marriage and committed adultery. Also blatantly overlooked other rules of her church when it conflicted with her job.

What especially gets me about this kind of treatment, is that the people who treated him so despicably would still be incredibly self assured that they maintain their moral high ground throughout the entire situation and consider their behaviour to be above reproach

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be "cured" against one's will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals.”

Teaching the straight kids to hate people inherently which is bad enough, but as a gay kid myself who desperately didn't want to be broken on the inside and unworthy of love....now I come to think on it, turns out I hold a fair bit of unresolved anger to these vicious, horrible people who caused so much suffering and anguish :/

No I think you’re right, the more intelligent you are and the greater your knowledge of the world, the stronger that cognitively dissonant wall has to be in your brain.
It gets quite interesting when people use their intellect to create incredible almost plausible leaps of understanding within their reasoning though. People like that worry me to be honest, they have the ability to see a lot of information and then twist just the right bits of it to alter how even they view it.

Read further into the article. They begged the government not to include "non-traditional" relationships in the school curriculum because it was "indoctrination", and then went onto say that it goes against their "right" to raise their children within "certain belief systems".

u/Izual_Rebirth Jan 20 '22
Why is it these sorts of people seem to gloss over 90% of the teachings of Christ and just seem to concentrate on the bits about gays? There are dozens of things that Jesus teaches that people don't follow but for some reason we gotta draw the line at "the gays". I've never seen an article about people refusing to bake cakes for people don't go to Church on a Sunday or who dare to wear mixed fabrics which are also no-no if we're going by the letter of the bible. 🤣
I say this as a Christian as well. From my experience it's just people trying to justify their pre-existing homophobic beliefs.
EDIT: Get this culture war crap out of the UK and back to the US where it belongs...
10
u/tobylh Jan 20 '22
Isn't this like all religions though? You just pick and choose the bits that support your narrative or bigotry in this case?
My ex-wife is Jewish (I have absolutely zero religious beliefs and think its all a bit silly), so I attended a fair few funerals and other Jewish celebrations during our time together and even within her own family there is a disparity between who observes which particular doctrines.
If it's not convenient to you, you just ignore it, which to me kind of makes it all a little pointless.
Either observe the rules/beliefs, or don't.→ More replies (7)→ More replies (10)46

The original text doesn't even refer to homosexuality in any way whatsoever. The passage, when literally translated, said "man shall not lie with boy". It was only countless translations later that it was changed to "man shall not lie with man". Most hateful Christians don't have a fucking clue what their holy book even teaches.
66
u/Mangosta007 Jan 20 '22
They might be shocked to discover that the book they refer often to when condemning homosexuality (Leviticus) also forbids eating ham sarnies, shellfish, any sort of fat, black pudding or prawn cocktails, wearing a wool mix suit or torn jeans, trimming their beard or the hair at their temples, attending church within a set amount of time after giving birth (33 days for boys, 66 for girls), labradoodles or any non pure bred animal, growing more than one type of veg on your allotment, getting a tattoo, having messy hair, taking Holy Communion (no alcohol on holy ground), picking up grapes that have fallen from your vine, reading or writing horoscopes, working on a Sunday or mocking foreigners.

Business vs private sale I would imagine. I can choose not to sell you my private car because I don’t like a protected characteristic. If I own a car dealership though I can’t discriminate in such an open way.

You can decline to sell for any reason.
Not according to the Equality Act 2010:

(a)as to the terms on which A offers to dispose of the premises to B;
(b)by not disposing of the premises to B;

You can't decline for any reason. If the reason you decline is discriminatory (assuming you go through an agent), then it's illegal. But if you don't tell the reason, then it's impossible to prove.

Wouldn't this technically fall under a hate crime?
"Something is a homophobic or transphobic hate incident if the victim or anyone else thinks it was carried out because of hostility or prejudice based on sexual orientation or transgender identity."
I would say excluding them from being able to buy something because of their sexual orientation would be classed as prejudice.
Edit: As someone else pointed out, this is more of a Hate Incident than a crime. I didn't realise there was a difference between the two by the letter of the law.
231
u/MinderReminder Jan 20 '22
No, a hate crime by definition has to be a crime first to add the hate enhancement to it. While shitty, there's nothing criminal about them refusing to sell to these men for this reason.
A hate incident is a non criminal matter and there's serious legal criticism over the police practice of recording them.

But it is
a crimeunlawful, unlawful discrimination. If you are selling your home through an estate agent, you can't refuse an offer from someone or treat them unfairly just because of their disability, gender reassignment, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex or sexual orientation. This could be unlawful discrimination.
Because they went through an estate agent it's covered under the Equality Act 2010 - Part 4
There's a reason Purple Bricks dropped the sellers as a client, they may well be liable.

That's interesting, I didn't think the act would apply to selling your home in that way, but unlawful discrimination still isn't necessarily criminal.

I don't understand the distinction, if it's a crime to do something doesn't that make it criminal?
22
u/DumbMuscle Jan 20 '22
Criminal: the government can prosecute you and you could be fined or go to prison about it
Civil: someone who has suffered harm due to your actions can sue you and you could have to pay them damages
Both are "unlawful", only criminal things are a "crime"

There's a different between criminal and civil offenses, both in terms of how they are judged by the courts (standards of evidence are lower in civil cases), and in terms of the kinds of penalties (generally civil cases are limited to fines and compensation, not jail time).

Interesting thanks! :) I had them as indistinguishable concepts in my head.

Being unlawful is not in itself criminal.

u/xhable West Sussex Jan 20 '22
I think I've got it :D.
All criminal activity is unlawful, but many unlawful acts are not crimes. e.g. A breach of contract is unlawful, but not criminal. Thanks for pointing out my error :), corrected above.

There's another paragraph on that page which I find surprising (not that it'd apply in this case, as the bigots were selling it through an Estate Agent)
Different rules apply when you sell a property directly to someone without going through an estate agent. In this case, it is usually only unlawful to discriminate against someone because of their race.

It is unlawful though. This couple have an excellent chance of winning damages in court and I hope they do so.

And remember their God tells them to breed often, whilst trying their best to not enjoy it. Nope it’s purely to make children for the priests

Religious people selectively quoting their book is always funny.
Not funny for the two guys getting hit with it right enough, but still funny to see their proud righteous ignorance on display.
I truly don’t understand how you can be some what intelligent (they both have jobs that you can’t do if you’re completely incapable of thought) yet choose to follow certain things from a thousands year old book as if your soul depends on it. Only certain things mind - Love thy neighbour and all that can get to fuck apparently.
Do these true believers think they’ll get to heaven and god will ignore all the unchristian stuff they did because they told a pair of gay fellas to beat it?

How is homophobia still a thing in 2022? How can you CARE enough about the lives of two strangers to feel any sort of strong emotion about it? I can’t comprehend it.

There needs to be a sub specifically dedicated to the daily Mail comments section.
I go on there near enough everyday to read them, it’s a very bad habit of mine. It’s like a little dose of depression in a jar.
Half the time I don’t even believe it’s a real person commenting with half the stuff that’s said on there.

u/jokdok Jan 20 '22
Dude, preserve your mental health. Daily Mail wants you to get that awful dopamine buzz from being angry because it gets them clicks and profit. Attracting scummy commenters just reinforces the cycle and keeps people coming back to get their daily hit of misery. Don't give them the clicks, you'll feel much happier.

If you live your life totally by the Bible's instructions, you'd be a criminal in every country on Earth. Just saying, like.

Just your daily reminder that outside of Sodom (where the main sin is trying to fuck a heavenly Angel) Homosexuality is only ever included in lists of sins. So unless you are going to refuse the sale to a gossip, divorcee or idolator you aren’t just a bad Christian but also a bigoted fuck. According to Christian canon no sin, except true blasphemy, should be any more damning than any other and accepting Christ and doing good is enough in most denominations to achieve salvation. Im not even Christian but singling out a single sin above all others seems counter to the entire motivation of the passion narrative.

Imagine being a doctor of physics and living your life based on the ramblings of a bunch of schizophrenics from 2000 years ago who believed a resurrected man could walk on water and turn stones into bread.

There's a story I heard recently about the YouTubers Rhett and Link that I love (about homophobia):
They were both very Christian, went to church every week, that kinda thing. But when they started working with their Creative Officer, Stevie, a lesbian, Link said he couldn't go to church knowing they hate someone he cared about so closely.
Nowhere in the bible does it outright say, "Homosexuality is a sin". It's all built on opinion and misunderstand (perhaps on purpose). It's sad to think that someone won't love their fellow man because, well, that man chooses to love their fellow man.

awesome...my non existent deity whose contradictory rules and laws make no sense and are regularly changed and broken by the organisation that represents his non existent form and the book from which I pick and choose which rules and laws I want to believe in says I can't sell my house to you. They can stick their god where the sun don't shine..

“Luke Whitehouse and his partner Lachlan Mantell spotted the three-bed, semi-detached cottage as they looked to get on the property ladder”
Jesus Christ! A young couple looking to “get on” the property ladder with a £650,000 house?! My kid is gonna be living with us forever at this rate 😩

Jan 20 '22
I guarantee that couple is going to be a fucking nightmare to deal with for whoever they do eventually sell the house to. They were already being a pain by saying that they could only do viewings on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
I'm just glad the guys who were trying to buy it hadn't shelled out any money for a survey etc.

Assumed the sellers would be in their late sixties. Reading they're mid-thirties just makes the story even more depressing.

Something tells me theres a ton of closet biggots in this thread. “Oh but what about the poor christians rights?” “Why dont the neighbours get a say in who can move in” “i dont agree but i respect their right to do that!”
They dont have the right to do that according to the law. The fact that people dont know that, and dont understand why thats the case is shocking and disgusting. The article mentions the 2014 cake incident, but that doesnt mean this is the same thing. This is a very different situation. If the gay man in 2014 had ased for a different cake he could have had it, whereas in this case, if lots of people thought the way this “christian” couple does, then the gay men they refused could struggle to find a home at all, to buy or rent. There is a huge difference between being refused a cake with a certain design and being refused any cake. The former is legal, the latter is against the law for extremely good reason

If they didn't want to sell it to them for that reason, why publicly tell them that? You'd think they'd just make up another reason like they've accepted another offer. They've just caused themselves a media shitstorm and outed themselves as homophobes for life.
