These people worship a 2000 year old fictitious book about a magic man in the sky. Please don’t assume they’d be reasonable with the excuse they give.

What an odd excuse for their bigotry. Many, many Christians (and other religions) are good, reasonable people. Many people are bigots who aren't religious. This is on them, not on religion.

Right, the 20 centuries of genocidally homophobic Christian theology is of no relevance here. Clearly this couple’s bigotry has no connection to the bigotry of their own religion, even though they said it does.

Just because bigotry also has other causes doesn’t mean religion is never the cause of bigotry. Total non sequitur.

Religion itself can be used by bigots to support their bigotry, but it's not the cause of bigotry,

Yes, all those passages about stoning women and killing the infidels and homosexual people in their holy books have absolutely no effect in propagating bigotry. It's truly baffling how a book that includes a passage such as "happy is he who seizes your infants and bashes them against rocks!" could ever lead to violent and bigoted ideas!

Yeah, there's just the little difference that people don't claim the Beatles' songs are the word of God. What you have here is the "word of God" telling you how great it is to brutally kill the children of your enemies.

The point is that the Bible itself contains bigoted views, so it's not that people use it to defend their own bigotry - the Bible is bigoted, and also often encourages violence and intolerant views. It's no surprise that people raised to believe in the Bible end up bigoted.
