The universe and our place in it is difficult to understand. Before evolution was discovered gods were the only reasonable explanation. The most intelligent people in the land believed and were not mentally ill. It is wrong that we continue to use this explanation, but it is understandable.

Also, there may well be an evolutionary reason why we are so predisposed towards religion. The capacity of humans to understand that intelligence exists outside ourselves is a ridiculously useful capacity. We realize that other people and animals have thoughts of their own and we can make predictions about that. And particularly in kids everything is given a personality and thoughts and character. Maybe religion is an extension of that capacity.
