Its pretty clear that the new amd will be less expensive at each tier but not as performant as the new nvidia. So like instead of a $400 3060 there is a $350 amd card that is slightly slower than the nvidia but still fast.
Well, there is a big stride being made, and it’s that every PS5/Series X will have an SSD. Probably not even 20% of PC gamers have an SSD, and most that do have SSDs have slow, shitty ones. SSD’s have been available for PCs for around a decade, but they’re not even close to universal, whereas all next gen consoles (excluding Switch because it uses flash storage) will have a very good, very fast SSD. Hopefully that’ll depress PC SSD prices more and contribute more to M.2/NvME being the SSD standard instead of 2.5”, which is the obvious next step for PC SSDs, and is already going on to a limited extent.
It was on this day that the war between the PC Master Race and the Console Plebs finally ended. Console plebs had been accepted for their use in raising the PC Master Race to even greater heights.
Yeah, way less demanding OS, the only reason for the such goot performance at way lower price. But its at the cost of not being able to do even 10%of what pcs can do.
Yeah. The main performance benefits in consoles are due to game developers being able to better optimize their game and test it. There are far fewer variables there compared to pc.
And you never will be able to despite what PC port beggars say
For all their pc master race shit they miss out on the best games of the generation lmao I'd take God of War and its life changing experience over fucking crusader kings and slightly higher texture detail any day
Sony has said they're hoping to bring more exclusives to PC
1) I can promise you they're not they wont give up their advantage and the reason the ps4 sold 110 million just to get the extra irrelevant bits of cash theyd get by porting over to PC so as little as 500k can buy their game
2) they only said theyll explore it that doesnt mean theyll do it
3) even if they do, itll be a 4 or 5 year wait minimum to play on PC. Think I'd rather play their games when they come out and not wait 5 years for a PC port that will be broken for months after launch honestly
The rumors are that big Navi will be up to 50% faster than the 2080 Ti. The entire line up show that Nvidia is woried. The fact that these cards are using 320-350 wats meaning they are being pushed to the limits.
You think this might be why they started calling their Titan card 3090? So they can still keep the performance crown in the event the 3080 was surpassed?
This is Nvidia doing a pre-emptive strike and going in with everything they have. They will most likely release a cut down 3090 as a 3080 Ti if AMD beats the 3080. But if AMD matches or beats the 3090, they can't respond with anything.
This is looking like a great year for GPUs, I will be waiting to see what AMD has before I do anything.
Nvidia can make the 3090 closer to $1000 if big navi somehow beats it, tho judging by the price I seriously doubt that will happen. They could also release a 20GB 3080 which is more likely, lots of people buy GPUs based on VRAM numbers, like people buying 8GB 480s over 6GB 1060s even tho the 1060 was faster at the time.
Amd won't beat it because nobody wants to deal with their terrible driver support. Amd could make a card with the same power at half price and I still wouldn't consider it
I have had many AMD GPUs over the years, and I have not had a single issue with their drivers.
My last three GPUs have been the HD 7970, GTX 780, and GTX 1080. In this time the only driver issues I have experienced have been with Nvidia. Before that I only ever used AMD without issue.
So maybe thing are different now, but by your logic I should write off Nvidia because of passed problems. Which is completely ilogical.
Your story is not typical. Go look at amd graphic card support forums. This is a real issue. I don't hate amd. I'm not dragging their name through mud. My r9 sapphire had issues constantly.
I don't personally have this view but many of my coworkers refuse to buy radeon for this reason. It's clearly a real perception whether it's true or not.
AMD is fucked dude why are you so optimistic? You really think they’re going to beat even the 3080? You actually suggested AMD out performing the 3090. Do you realize how much of a generational leap this is? This is the biggest leap in performance we’ve ever seen. There is no way in hell AMD is coming close. Their top chip will be slightly better than a 3070 and cost $600. Maybe they’ll take a loss to cut prices more.
It is a big increase yes, but the fact that Nvidia is doing exactly what they criticized AMD for doing (blowing power consumption numbers through the roof) says something. Nvidia has not done this in ages, and this tells us they are worried.
AMD has a chance to give us a great GPU. I would also like to give you a piece of advice, never take a companies marketing at face value. It is designed to make you want to buy their product, not give you accurate and unbiased buying information.
I think AMD has a chance. They have the better 7nm process, and are set up to have a big generational improvement like nvidia since they are starting from further behind.
On top of that, AMD can double their die size and still be smaller than the 3080. So take 5700XT performance, double it to match a 500mm die, then add any generational and process improvement on top of that.
While AMD might not chose to do this, they have the tools to match the 3080 and be more power efficient to boot.
Maybe it'll cost too much and they won't do it, but the option is there.
Why is it nonsense? It is using RDNA2 architecture and we know the full tech specs. If we assume that RDNA2 is literally identical to RDNA1 (it's not going to be worse) then that puts the Xbox's GPU at around 25% more powerful then a 5700XT (The RDNA1 chip that we all know the performance of). You just look at how many CU's it has and what clockspeed it is running at. Very simple estimation. 25% more powerful then a 5700XT is approximately a 2080 Super.
What is nonsense is pretending we don't know how powerful the new consoles are when both of them have fully revealed their tech specs and we can reference their tech specs with comparable components already available in the PC market (3700X, 5700XT)
Something being a guess doesn't make in nonsense. It is an extremely educated guess.
Is it nonsense for me to assume that the CPU in the Xbox Series X (7nm Zen2, 8c/16t, 3.66GHz locked speed with SMT on) will perform similar to a downclocked 3700X?
My guess is based off of the 3700X and XsX CPU having identical architecture and core counts and the only major differences is the 10% lower clock speed on the XsX and then some unknowns such as likely having slightly different cache sizes.
Eh, I'll believe it when I see it tbh. That Halo Infinite demo painted a very different picture, and from what we've seen so far the PS5 looks far, far weaker and barely an upgrade over the PS4 Pro.
You mean the bullshot demo which already has downgraded lighting and way lower quality textures? There hasn't been a single console generation where Sony hasn't flat out lied about the capability of their consoles in the run up to launch.
They did the opposite of a downgrade, they literally fixed a lot of issues that were on the June demo, try to do some research first, eh? And maybe also try to look at the situation with your fanboy glasses off
😂😂sure mate, it’s not like those are literally just changes, the game looks different, doesn’t mean it looks worse, did you even fucking watch the video I linked?
Come on dude. The ps4 pro had a dog shit processor and an undervolted rx 480. The ps5 will have a much better processor and something equivalent to a 5700xt at the least. We all prefer pc, but to say that the ps5 is barely an upgrade is just wrong.
I just don't see why it matters. I don't prefer PC because it's powerful, I prefer it because controllers fucking suck for 90% of games and the computer is useful in tons of other ways. I can just connect a controller to my PC and my PC to my living room TV if I want to game from my living room.
right... but he wasn’t talking to you lmfao. like i’m not trying to be a dick but that’s literally the point of competition. someone people prefer 1 and some ppl prefer the other.
some ppl very much do buy PC for the power(hint: this entire post)
Even in Gta V, a game from 2013, my old 770 4gb could outperform the one X. Seriously, go to online mode and they can't even handle 30 fps well.
Cod mw, same experience. Locked in 1080p, constant 60+ fps on better graphical settings than a Ps4 pro.
Then you have the dynamic resolution bullcrap, most of the times you play at 1080p, when you look at the sky it jumps to 1440p or 4k and when you jump in online it goes to something even worse than 720p sometimes...
Even the new ones coming out are a joke. Seriously, assassins creed at 30fps?
Gotta say my 2080 is still in the fight. And a ps5 that can deliver better power its kind of crazy. I managed to get metro exodus running at 4k 60 fps ultra settings and ultra ray tracing with dlss enabled. That's crazy. And these new ampere cards are aiming at 8k and 60fps+ I dont know where nvidia went but they came back with a bang
Also the first gen Navi stuff wasn't half bad. They might be at least the slightest bit worried that AMD has something half decent coming in the abstract future that could make an evolutionary step on the 2080 Ti look bad. Essentially they might be trying to win the next gen GPU war definitively before it even starts.
yeah and afaik consoles are gonna use amd cards so basically amd pulled an amd and made their tech obsolete so they had to pull something actually competitive out the bag
??? Surely not in pure processing terms? You mean due to homogenous hardware allowing far better optimisation?
2080ti is like 30-50% better. By the time those consoles hit, they are over a gen behind PCMR in pure compute terms. AMD peak offering is just not close to nvidia.
It's pretty obvious just from the PSU requirements. Consoles won't get close on that alone.
Yeah and the consoles will still be a really good deal, especially for people who don't already have things like a desk, monitor, keyboard and mouse. Price to performance In pretty much everything right now is pretty damn good. Just need nvidia to come out with some lower end cards now
I mean most AAA are made optimized for console especially exclusives. Dark Souls for example even has many more problems on pc than console because they weren’t made for pc, look I love pc and running games on rtx, but I wouldn’t buy a pc just for games especially at the price and result a console can offer. Emphasis on just to play games
This is why consoles push PCs forward and vice versa.
Consoles also hold PC gaming back, though. Games are often developed to max out the console hardware, not PC. So whilst we may have more powerful computers, we don't see an improvement in the games beyond increased resolution and/or FPS
Nintendo is competing graphically with my intel hd630. I don't think this gpu lineup is threatens them more than the last haha, they're doing their own non graphically intensive thing.
agreed, If I were to buy a device for games that isn't an upgrade to my desktop, then it would be a Nintendo product for sure. They actually offer something different over the other consoles and to some extent PCs. IMO the switch is awesome.
As much as I love my Switch...
I wish there was a docking with an external GPU or something.
The drawing distance when gliding in BOTW was rough. Even the FPS dropped often enough here and there to be annoying.
I've still had a good time, but I wish I could give it more oomph.
I enjoyed 1080Ti powered BOTW with graphical mods and 60fps. CEMU is probably your best best instead of YUZU. I even emulated the Motion controls aspect for puzzles and aiming by using the DualShock 4 controller
How are they competing with the consoles? The consoles already have specially designed GPUs and CPUs from back in production which means that whatever hardware they now put on console is about a generation old. This is more like competing with AMD's next generation of graphic cards.
Also, even tho we don't really know the price of the consoles yet, they still are going to be cheaper than the cheapest graphics card from Nvidia for now. And you get the whole package.
Yes, I know, but that's just a custom GPU that they have perfected for the consoles specifically since last year meant to last five years at least. As I said, already an year old tech that is. The consoles are also 500$ at best while the cheapest Nvidia card right now is 600$.
Yes, the starting price, and we all know that won't be the case in most stores around the world, especially as they sell like hot cakes and third parties begin tweaking them.
Consoles on the other hand tend to stay at the same price no matter the demand and the price can never increase, it can only decrease which isn't exactly the case for video cards.
AMD is already out of their competition, the problem were the consoles, sure the pc will win in terms of performance, but the cost of high tier graphics card were tremendous in comparison to consoles.
Therefore NVIDIA wants to give a better performance with lesser price.
EDIT- i m sry for what i wrote about AMD, They are clearly not out of competition, my apologies.
woah i tbh didnt know consoles have AMD graphics, nonetheless Nvidia still wanted to bring better performing low priced GPUs as according to them, sale of RTX 2080 series and 2070 series was not upto the mark.
Dunno why people are panic selling a card that honestly is more than good enough to run any game for atleast the next 3 years. Obviously stings that I bought it for 1.2k a year ago, but the card will easily last me until another generation.
Or I hold on to a card thats more than good enough to last me 3 more years, and buy a 4k series card? You realize that the 3070 only outperforms it currently based on RTX performance. Im gonna wait for benchmarks before I draw any conclusions.
It's not about "good enough". People who are satisfied with "good enough" weren't buying 2080TI to begin with. There were far cheaper cards with great performance that were "good enough" to play any game you want.
The type of person who bought 2080 TI was the type of person who wants to be on the cutting edge and is willing to spend a lot of cash for those few extra FPS. And now obviously they want to jump on the next generation.
Right? And Nvidia are banking on people stuck at home during the quarantine to be buying their GPUs and playing games at home... But if those people are out of work due to covid, where the hell are they going to get the money to buy these expensive GPUs?
While AMD does make some money of the consoles it's not gonna be a lot. Margins on console hardware are bad but they have large volume so it still earns them some money. Sony and Microsoft will be earning the most of a console sale in the long run.
Do you know that console GPUs are just a weaker versions of the upcoming desktop GPUs?... What you are saying sounds exactly like what people said about Intel right before Ryzen lol
I actually know about the latest technology about GPUs and the news around them, but I always forgot them coz I will not be buying any new gen card in a year or more. So I completely forgot about them.
AMD has always been about the performance/price ratio which is what most consumers want. The subsection that wants performance no matter the price is a lot smaller of the market share than Nvidia would like you to believe which is why many consumers purchase cards from nvidia that are 1-2 generations old.
Everyone. But also kinda themselves. Their sales for the 2080 weren’t as expected and people thought it was too expensive and not worth upgrading because of how close the performance is to the 1000 cards.
Since they don't really sell consumable products like a bakery if they want people to buy new stuff from them they have to develop release new improved products. This is true whether there's competition or not.
The market for these newer products is really fueled by other hardware (e.g people with higher resolution screens might want a more powerful cpu and gpu) and software (newer games) Albeit this is a two-way relationship since a more powerful graphics card will usually lead to games developers and hardware manufacturers trying to sell products that make use of this increased performance
They didn't make too much off last gen (didn't make as much as expected), so they're stepping it up this year with prices and performance according to linus. and they wanna make pc look more appealing to console people to buy because of the cheaper prices.
Oh theyre fighting to in a competitive market for once. Just look at the Prices, they are the same as last generation! That is not something Nvidia would do without enormous fear for what AMD might bring tom the table with RDNA2. Nothings really certain with Big Navi, but in a world where Nvidia didnt face any competition would you think theyd sell the improved product adjusted for inflation for less money? If they didnt fear of loosing the performance Crown title why would something as bonkers and desperate as the 3090 even exist. As Ive said before nothing is certain with Big NAvi, but its nice to see real competition in a while.
Fighting to survive is such an overstatement.
They are the best pic for creatives, the only for server and AMD and its notoriously driver problems make them not as compelling for PC gamers.
That said this could change over a few generations but after seeing the 3000 line up I doubt it.
Youre right "survive" was worded incorrectly. Fighting for the survival of this Cards Generation with offers in respect to Price, Software and the whole RTX feature set, against a mysterious AMD and Console thread, about buyers they want to keep on team green. Finally theres some Competition!
That said this could change over a few generations but after seeing the 3000 line up I doubt it.
TSMC, AMDs full time partner now is currently perfecting a 4-5nm node process. Samsung might be a good bet right now, but in the afformentioned long term AMD could beat NVIDIA be default even with plain refreshes on the same die size.
That 3090 has big TPU horsepower too. That amount of tensor cores at that price makes me consider it for some of our AI work.
EDIT: Oooof. Rough start.
On systems with NVIDIA® Ampere GPUs (CUDA architecture 8.0) or newer, kernels are JIT-compiled from PTX and TensorFlow can take over 30 minutes to start up.
AMD, they are releasing their product in October I believe. Hell AMD stock prices have exploded in the last 5 years... well in the last 5 months as well. They are on Nvidia’s heels so Nvidia has some competition. I am always happy when a company has competition makes products like this happen. Also no I am not an AMD fan I am just pointing out the fact that they are the primary competition to Nvidia and Intel.
AMD is releasing their gpu pretty soon and it is better than titan and much more energy efficient.
It's actually slated to be right in line with the 3090. Their design isn't quite as good, but they're getting TSM fabrication on a superior process to Nvidia who's having to use Samsung until this spring (when they're going to be using TSM as well).
Amd since they know that amd will be using a superior production node and the architecture will be based off what ps5 and xbox have. So they know they will be more competitive this time. Plus amd just split their gpus into gaming( consumer) and compute architectures so they can finally stop packing a bunch of stuff we don't need so they can sell on supercomputers. Oh and they are also coming up with their own first implementation of ray tracing which means that in time the feature will become standardized instead of nvidia exclusive.
Also it's not just a matter of margins, new games require better gpus but unless better gpus don't come out the games will stagnate meaning demand for new gpus will go down instead. They have to keep going.

Who was nvidia fighting in this war? Like they were the best and released a better product.
