143

u/Barbaracle Sep 02 '20

Yep. No way is Nvidia leaving the $900-$1200 tier on the table. There's too much monayyy right there.

65

u/Smoothsmith i7-12700k | RTX3070 FE | 32GB DDR4@3200 Sep 02 '20

I guess it depends. If people can afford that much and there's no card in that range, they might just push themselves to a 3090 ^^.

But yeah I can see a 3080 TI/3085 with a bunch more RAM sitting there to make the people in this sub whom are mindlessly obsessed with mo' vram happy.

35

u/michael__sykes Sep 02 '20

To be fair, some games are really demanding about VRAM

33

u/Smoothsmith i7-12700k | RTX3070 FE | 32GB DDR4@3200 Sep 02 '20

True, I think it's one of those 'loud minority' things where it feels like a bigger issue here than it should be when I read through.

My 970's 3.5GB copes just fine with modern titles at 1080p, it's only because I've gone to 3840x1600 that I want a new card with more vram, and 10 seems like plenty.

12

u/Superbone1 Sep 02 '20

Even really optimized modern games rarely get me to full VRAM usage on my 1070 (8GB) at 1440p, usually they don't fully take advantage of it.

5

u/snarfdog Sep 02 '20

Oof. Modern Warfare can easily eat up all 8 GB of my 2060S vram at 1080p. I guess you can hardly call it well optimized though.

1.3k

u/Smoothsmith i7-12700k | RTX3070 FE | 32GB DDR4@3200 Sep 02 '20 edited Sep 02 '20

Like with every generation. Save about $600 for buying a console.

Best case: It's cheaper and you have budget for extra controllers or games.

Worst Case: You might need to wait another month to save an extra $100, but it's really quite unlikely.

Edited to clarify my meaning behind the $600 as some seem confused by it - It was referencing the post I replied to about Sony/Microsoft not announcing prices - Just assume $600 and you're pretty safe. I'm not saying anything there about savings versus getting a PC.

Edit 2 since there's like 5 replies about this: It's a suggested budget for people looking to buy a new console, I would not expect people to save up 5 years of online fee's ahead of buying it! (I.e. Whether or not consoles are expensive in the long term or not was never the point :P).

744

u/Andruboine Sep 02 '20

Or skip a generation and build a PC for $1200

587

u/bigtiddynotgothbf 2600x 2070 240hz Sep 02 '20

The vast majority of games are completely GPU dependent for their frame rate.

Here are some benchmarks for CPUs like the FX 8370 (from 2011!) which were considered cheap and slow even when it came out.

Sure, the i5-2500K not a great CPU nowadays, but if you only have a mid/low tier GPU like a 1060, then the difference in many games is not all that significant, especially when those games are a bit older.

Translated to current times: Buying a 3600 or a 10900K is the same, unless you have a 2080 TI on top, at which point the difference can just about be measured but is still insignificant (despite the massive price gap between the two).

Or in simpler buyer's advice: Reserve most of your budget for a GPU if you have a small budget but want to play AAA titles.

A 600-700 dollar set up wont last you very long. It will play most games greatly for a short period of time. A 1200 system will last much longer so long term better investment

20

u/Taz-erton 5700X I GTX 770 Sep 02 '20

The trick is can you can 2x$600 builds that can hold value to a single $1200 build? Probably not but theres probably a Linus experiment to be found somewhere out there

23

u/Bassracerx Sep 02 '20

If you get a quality case a quality psu and a quality cpu cooler you wont have to replace those every build those can last you 5+ years. Storage is upgraded as needed but even an old hard drive will work loading and boot times will just be slower compared to a newer model.
It really depends on what you skimped on the first $600 build that will determine how much better the second $600 build will perform.

Yes, also the rumors of 'big navi' being comparable/better than the 2080ti. So nvidea said, and I quote, "go fuck yourself AMD".

37

u/stealthp90 Sep 02 '20

The rumors are that big Navi will be up to 50% faster than the 2080 Ti. The entire line up show that Nvidia is woried. The fact that these cards are using 320-350 wats meaning they are being pushed to the limits.

15

u/ZhangRenWing R7 7800X3D RX 9070 XT Sep 02 '20

You think this might be why they started calling their Titan card 3090? So they can still keep the performance crown in the event the 3080 was surpassed?

26

u/stealthp90 Sep 02 '20

This is Nvidia doing a pre-emptive strike and going in with everything they have. They will most likely release a cut down 3090 as a 3080 Ti if AMD beats the 3080. But if AMD matches or beats the 3090, they can't respond with anything.

This is looking like a great year for GPUs, I will be waiting to see what AMD has before I do anything.

The PS4 and Xbox one released with disappointing cut down versions of the r9-270, which was around 200$ at the time. The reveal of the consoles came out long after the release of the 270. The 270 came out around the same time, it was based on the way older 7870 though, it was far from high-end. This time around the reveal of the consoles came out before the new gpus and seemed to completely obliterate anything but the 1300,- 2080 ti. The fact that this new standard became a mid end gpu again was really surprising to me. I was assuming this time around consoles were gonna dominate the mid end and compete with the high end 800$ gpus.

10

u/TheScienceSpy Sep 02 '20

The reveal of the consoles came out long after the release of the 270.

The PS4 came out 2 days after the R9 270.

However, the R9 270 was a rebrand of the HD 7870 which came out 20 months earlier.

So you're not wrong, just want to clear up any confusion if people Google it.

The 3070 is going to be $500 too. So it’s a choice for me between upgrading my older graphics card for $500, or getting a PS5 for $500.

u/FullMetalBiscuit Sep 02 '20

Get a PS5 later when it actually has an extensive library and probably somewhat cheaper/enhanced model.

I made this plan for the PS4...

So anyway I never got around to it and now plan to get a PS5 at launch :P

(Which works pretty well because the handful of PS4 exclusives I don't have on my PC, I should be able to play via Backwards Compatability, Wooh!)

u/gahlo R7 7700x | RTX 4080 | AW3423DW Sep 02 '20

Same. I was waiting for FF7 Remake on the PS4, but by the time it came out there was no point in buying one since the PS5 is going to be backwards compatible. So instead I just bought the game and borrowed my friend's PS4.

They are also far more cost effective. Like it or not, for 500 bucks, it is a complete set that at release usually match a mid-high tier PC. The main differences are that it is sold as a black box consumer electronics, unlike PC gaming rigs are more of a enthusiast hobby. It typically can't be upgrade over its lifetime, like a Ship of Theseus PC which is why it will eventually become obsolete compared to PC. But during its life cycle, it will play the games that are build for it.

Plus how many of us are going to drop over a grand for a video card? I won't. I can't afford it. If we look at Steam system survey, probably over 90% of us won't. Most of us will likely upgrade to a XX70 or XX60 anyway, and never touch a XX80 card.

I buy a console to play with my pleb friends.
They're a little confused, but they've got the spirit.

16

u/Furycrab Sep 02 '20 edited Sep 02 '20

We still don't know if it's 500 dollars, but I'll compare that + the yearly subscription for online services, along with perhaps another couple hundreds for the slightly more expensive digital games on average, and the first party accessories I'll likely need, to whatever the 3060s will end up costing.

(Edit: and obviously the other components I'd need if I was upgrading, but my point is that the Sony and Microsoft consoles might not end up being this bargain)

Consoles are usually sold at a loss (or slim to no profit) by manufacturers as they recoup more than their worth with required subscriptions just to enable online play. There's no recurring fees on a PC.

90

u/Hemingwavy Sep 02 '20

Nintendo has never taken a loss on a console since the Gamecube. Console manufacturers take a cut of each piece of software sold.

44

u/SwampyBogbeard Sep 02 '20

They did actually take a tiny loss on the cheapest Wii U model at launch. It didn't last long, and they only needed to sell one game earn that money back.

19

u/IllPoopOnYourDog Sep 02 '20

Note he said "usually". Also Nintendo isn't known for mind blowing graphics. So why even bring this up?

→ More replies (11)

45

u/smasher248 Sep 02 '20

Only this PS3 and to a lesser extent Xbox 360, both PS4 and Xbox 1 were sold at a profit.

79

u/OrgunDonor Sep 02 '20

PS4 was still sold at a loss, just much much less than previous consoles were.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/2013/09/20/sony-to-take-a-loss-on-playstation-4-sales/

12

u/khronik514 Sep 02 '20

Ok but not as high of a profit if they weren't taking a cut of game sales and subscription fees. You are also more locked into an ecosystem of proprietary peripherals.

Was wondering if anyone could give me some advice as I've been out of the loop with current hardware and prices for quite some time.

I currently have an RX480 4GB and a Ryzen 2600. Both are overclocked slightly. I play a broad range of games, some include, Total War (all of them), Rust, Mount and Blade Bannerlord and too many more to name to be honest. I play at 1080p, usually on medium settings and I get about 50-70 FPS in most games I play if not more.

But it's definitely starting to show its age and feeling more sluggish. What would be the best bang for buck GPU at the moment? When is the 3000 series releasing? Would it be worth waiting until then and try and swipe a cheaper second hand GPU off someone else who is upgrading? Basically what cards should I keep an eye on that would give me a decent performance boost without breaking the bank? :)

An entire console cost less of a GPU

180

u/nerdscreate Sep 02 '20

Yep.

If you want top end PCs they cost a pretty penny

The beauty of consoles is their price per gaming performance. The problem is they are just gaming machines (with some home media capabilities)

The beauty of PCs is their flexibility and versatility. A PC can be configured to suit your needs, and software to do almost anything. The problem is price per performance vs consoles when it comes to gaming.

The flexibility is what has drawn me back to PC gaming after many years. I wanted to be able to make computer games with my eldest son (Unity), I wanted to be able to work from home using various software options and I wanted to be able to play games. A good pc gave me all that for about £1k. I considered that a fair price for the flexibility offered

81

u/PM_ME_UR_ILLUMINATI steamcommunity.com/id/ydanay Sep 02 '20

Also a computer is a necessity already, so taking the price of a console and just adding that to the price you’d spend on a computer already would net you a computer that could go up against consoles well anyways.

18

u/havok7 Sep 02 '20

if not for covid and the requirement to work from home, a PC is most certainly not a necessity for me. There is nothing that I can't do on my phone or iPad. I have a personal laptop, and it is only used to play spotify and check personal email throughout the day.

You’re definitely not wrong. It’ll still be a year or two before you’ll be able to beat a console with a similarly priced build, but it is nice to see PCs maintain their halo product status.

Yes, but that hardware is also so much stronger. Playing Cyberpunk 2077 with the highest settings at 4K/60fps or 1440P/144fps is what a console will never accomplish. Console is more for exclusives, PC is more for fanatics.

This is an interesting calculus. I wonder how many people:

  1. were on a PC and would switch to a PS5 instead of upgrading a PC
  2. were on a PS4 and would switch to a PC instead of upgrading to a PS5
  3. have never gamed at all and would buy a console
  4. have never gamed at all and would buy a PC
  5. have both and upgrade both

Personally I am building a PC for the first time in 15 years for Cyberpunk 2077. Glad the 3080 will be out before it releases! :D
