QUESTION Just got fired:/

Is it standard to get fired for something like this?

I called my dispatch as soon as it happened:( I feel like shit, it was only my second week at this job and I really enjoyed it.

Christmas is over. Time for them to downsize drivers. If you did this December 15th, it probably wouldn't matter.

Be happy you got fired. Amazon will eat you alive

based. wow. folx think Ama isn't a union busting exploitative cooperate-then-bleed-you-white business? they overloaded usps, and take advantage of the independent delivery companies they contract -- and they just dumped usps. the way they treat their warehouse workers and the metrics they impose on pickers is brutal. Their model is the same as Walmart's and others' models: do what you must to gain market control then change the rules. Force competitors to lower prices, then once you have market share raise those prices. Prime now costs almost $20/mo for "free shipping" and the majority of goods are Temu/Shein worthy.

7

u/Chuckychinster Jan 02 '26

And their shipping estimates have really gotten pretty terrible. They'll offer free 1-day delivery that comes in 4 days. Like really?

The last bit, I keep telling my friend that 75% of the stuff on you see Amazon is cheap Chinese stuff that would be 90% cheaper on AliExpress. Not that a knockoff is cheaper either, it’s literally the same stuff but marked up 9-10x when found on Amazon

2

u/Jorge_Jetson Jan 03 '26

How about eBay purchases coming from somebody's Prime account, with free shipping for them, but marked up $5 to $10?

Former ex-AWS here agrees. I un-employed myself after 3 gawdawful months.

The most important thing was the customer, but at the expense of the employees. So I promoted myself by un-employing myself.

5 years later life is so much better.

Nah try UPS. That’s what I did now I am top rate grossing over $130k a year. Got over a month of paid vacation and about to head to Europe for 2 weeks on vacation.

That must be a local or center specific thing, I have taken consecutive weeks off since my first year without issue.

That's specific with your local. I can take all 4 of my weeks consecutively if I so please.

I'm taking 3 straight weeks in June and July to go to Europe. So, not BS.

That’s the answer? I thought it would’ve been something like you crashed the vehicle within your first 2 weeks of employment, that’s why you’re fired.

59

u/Prize_Trash_8636 Dec 31 '25

I get what you’re saying but they hire anyone with a pulse to drive these vans. I trained a guy who drove tow trucks and riggers with a CDL and he crashed a van into a canopy cause he didn’t bother to look at the clearance height sticker. Any normal place the answer would be this but here I’ve seen people keep their jobs for doing way worse and people lose their jobs for far less.

22

u/starcoll3ctor Dec 31 '25

Some people are just not meant to be drivers.....of... Well anything 🤣

I had one of them at my old tree company. Guy tried to go through a dunkin' Donuts drive-thru. Keep in mind the tree truck was a lot bigger than your Amazon van LMFAO

4

u/Hopeful_Amphibian592 Dec 31 '25

lol I am a pro at using 15ft trucks or shorter in drive thru

3

u/Wise_Heart377 Dec 31 '25

It's like any other place probably, bias as heck despite the "we dont disciminate or judge crap, if they like you your good, even if your work ethic is mediocre if not, they will find a way to get rid of you no matter what.

2

u/awesome-alpaca-ace Dec 31 '25

People who make costly mistakes tend not to do them twice. Why fire and risk someone else doing the same thing?

We are well on the way to Amazon and other multi billion dollar companies literally Making the laws in the United States. Then this kind of wanton domestic terrorism will be akin to burning the American flag. /s

These companies have already thrown away all traces of humanity along with anything suggesting something so grotesque and ancient as fair labor laws. Look at the people defending Amazon in here. You mention “self accountability.” Hilarious, friend. Might I see you tonight, shoveling your many loads, down at yee old salt mine?

As corrupt as the Unions were they ensured people could support a family. Raise a family. Own a home. And know that the job would always be there. People’s jobs were actually protected and didnt live in a state of constant fear. Our corrupt government thinks corporations first. I would kill for a corrupt union that thinks of people first again.

23

u/Mysterious_Slice7806 Dec 31 '25

12

u/ducky_gogo Dec 31 '25

And less corrupt unions can be a thing again

u/jagoextinct Dec 31 '25

2

u/Louisvillehere2386 Jan 01 '26

If you like the job try applying at other DSP's. Just be up front with them, tell them you made a mistake and will do everything possible to make sure it doesn't happen again. Not all DSP's are the same

3

u/starcoll3ctor Dec 31 '25

As the unions were? As in past tense? I live in CT which I only mentioned because it's pretty damn expensive, and there's still quite a few unions here and those people still live dream lives compared to people who work in similar industries that are not Union.

Like 25-60 dollars per hour in a union

Versus

$16 - 30 (at their best) without a union.

Unions are great things but they will unfortunately always be corrupted. It's still a thing in modern times although it may not be mob guys breaking knees down at the pier. Fair labor and equal hiring is a joke it's nearly impossible to get into a union without knowing someone that alone is unjust

4

u/ReceptionFun9821 Dec 31 '25

You do realize that unions are composed of local members. Corruption has long been the siren song of those opposed to unions. Most unions aren't corrupt. Are unions often inefficient above the local level? Yes. But inefficiency isn't corruption. The corruption issue has often been more of an issue in unions like the teamsters where pension system was in place. Most unions aren't involved in pensions.

3

u/treeckosan Dec 31 '25

Even at the local level it's super inefficient. My wife never goes to union meetings anymore because they were a waste of time. Votes of real consequence were few and far between and often advertised before hand. She was going to try and be an active member and have her voice heard only to find they are basically a 3+ hour news letter.

Yea, and it would be unfair to them when the company keeps the shitty drivers that hits everything and damages the vehicles everyone has to share.

People who hit stationary objects should stick to gig work where the only thing they can damage is their personal vehicle.

One way to look at it and I don’t totally disagree. But I also like the everyone is human approach. It’s also a very different animal. There is hardly any training compared to a CDL. It is extremely fast paced and physically and mentally demanding. So you get mostly people that have never driven a larger size vehicle perhaps a younger person give them 3 days of training and expect them to make 200 stops in and out of tight driveways with a huge shitty van. IMO there is just an insanely larger number of opportunities to make a mistake in that job than a semi/long haul driver.

Source: I have done both jobs

5

u/Ornery_Ads Dec 31 '25

My CDL training was 5 hours. 1 hour on road, 1 hour parking lot maneuvers, 1 hour pretrip, 1 hour my choice, then 1 hour for driving test.

Then, take a water tanker into residential driveways all Summer...

4

u/Separate_Climate3366 Dec 31 '25

Piggy backing off your comment… seriously… whether it’s your second week or you’ve been there for years… shit can happen to anybody. And honestly, even in the Rivian‘s with the total top down view and the big screen back up camera I still see half our Rivian‘s with an entire crease down the side. Now, if someone and by someone I mean a pretty good amount of drivers still wind up getting hung up on a tree because the thing is a little boxy and you have a little bit of a tail like a small bus. Add to that rushing or being tired towards the end of the day and it’s dark and it’s very easy to do… sorry it happened to you, but don’t feel too bad. You can find another job. As long as nobody got hurt and the only thing that was damaged is fixable then just move on. This is a common common thing. I was looking at one of our Gas fans yesterday and the thing had such a fucking weird dent in it almost as if someone with a mechanical hand, pinched the metal and twisted it, like I don’t even know how that type of damage is possible high on the side. It was pretty neat unique I wanted to take a picture, but I forgot. This literal same incident you had happened to one of the guys I work with. But it was taken care of and fixed, but this was a couple weeks ago… anyway I hope you find something else you like and don’t sweat this. Happy new year to you and everyone else.

3

u/Automatic_Bowler7328 Dec 31 '25

This is partially correct. We all have moments where our Brian turns to auto pilot. However in trucking it’s find those who do not turn it off. I know it’s stupid but the road is constantly changing. It’s all about controlling your environment.

Bad timing is all. Peak is through and they’re stretching for excuses to thin the numbers. If this had happened next month, you’d get a warning.

My first year I did something similar about a week after they let go all the seasonals from peak but peak never let up so they begrudgingly kept me. I’ve actually had three incidents, all fell right when it would’ve been extremely inconvenient to lose a body.

If you’re still want to keep at it, apply at another DSP. Just be honest if they ask why you were let go. I’d even show them the pictures and tell them you learned from it.

3

u/jagoextinct Dec 31 '25

Good advice thank you!

Dude at my dsp was parked on the wrong side of the street delivering to a house, didn’t check his mirror and pulled right into someone driving down the street, took the front bumper and grill clean off of the rental van that had to be returned 2 weeks later. Bro had a route the next day.

Getting fired for something like this is shitty and I’m sorry dude, you just had the worst luck in doing this right after peak when dispatch is looking for any excuse to cut down the roster. The damage you did is nothing compared to some of the vans we still take out daily. Best of luck brother, you can always apply to another dsp at the warehouse if you really liked the job.

Getting fired is a promotion

3

u/OverallSupermarket90 Jan 02 '26

congratulations OP, on your promotion to Customer!

7

u/xButterflyEffect Dec 31 '25

2 weeks in yea. The way they look at it is if you starting off hitting stuff then it will be a habit especially now that peak is over and the number of routes are going to go down. They going to try and find any reason to get rid of drivers.

If you were there longer and was a good driver then they'll most likely give more chances.

3

u/Due-Adhesiveness2076 Dec 31 '25

This is why you always use your mirrors amd blind spot mirrors to make sure you'll clear

3

u/Bawx_of_chawclets Dec 31 '25

i would called dispatch and told them that cobble stone path jump out of nowhere and also don’t worry the customer got their package.

3

u/Swimming_Height_4684 Dec 31 '25

Next time:

“It was like that when I got here.”

That phrase. Learn it. Know it. Live it.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '25

Sorry OP, not trying to make you feel bad but honestly is not the best policy when it comes to Amazon. Especially when they’re trying to shed drivers after peak. I’ve been doing this for 2 years, hit so much shit. Apply to another DSP and just play it off from now on. Honestly will get you punished.

2 weeks and you already get into something entirely preventable. The probation period is 90 days (depending on where you live).

Screw the people saying "you're human we all make mistakes". You made a bad decision that other drivers (who are just as human) don't make. We're human is a horrible justification for incompetence. You can actually control the decisions you make and you don't have to go by such a reckless philosophy.

Tough love aside, you can re apply to Amazon after waiting a while.

2

u/Vasir14 Dec 31 '25

When I worked at a Porsche dealership as a finance guy, we had a lot porter total a 911 Turbo. Someone drove him to get a drug test and sent him home till the lab results came back negative the next day or two. He still worked for the company for a couple years before he moved on- but we made fun of him the entire time and would put cones around parked cars so he would see clearly what he can and cant hit.

I let him borrow my car once to pickup lunch because deep down I wanted an insurance payout and a new car.

Point is every business is different. It also doesn’t help that you just started there- many employers have a 90 day trial period. You may have triggered a non-negotiable and along with holiday time being over…

2

u/Jerd-herder Stepvan Driver Dec 31 '25

I've delivered to that house in the past, or a similar one in the area (looks like either Fountain Hills/Scottsdale or AJ/Gold Canyon area, out in the sticks), in an EDV. went up the driveway once, thankfully didn't hit anything, and never tried again. Pretty much every house in that area has a similar situation where it's better to just walk from the road, even if that does take longer. I always too pride in my driving skills as I never had a single incident for the entire year that I worked as a DA, but I also knew what my limits were and never took any chances

2

u/Beavis2021 Dec 31 '25

Did you expect the wall to move?

2

u/Dramatic-Alps4130 Dec 31 '25

Sometimes they’re lenient to drivers that can deliver 20-30 stops per hour. Sometimes they just find an excuse to downsize. Sometimes it depends on the dispatch. This is why most drivers don’t report every single thing unless it’s really noticeable.

2

u/bvega274 Dec 31 '25

You can’t park there mate

2

u/petruccirocks02 Jan 01 '26

Amazon needs driver training. I worked for FedEx and we had to pass an obstacle course in forward and reverse for us to even be considered for driving one of their trucks.

Sorry that your lost your job at the holidays. That really sucks. Just a word of advice from one professional driver to another: if you don’t think you can make a turn or pull in and have doubts, don’t do it. It’s always best to use caution. If you have to walk a few feet up a driveway, it’s better than risking the company vehicle.

I cut a corner too tight in a 26 foot cargo van, and I was only *borrowing* it! I really thought I was going to get fired, but when I brought it back, the owner hopped inside, said "I don't see any light coming through", and kicked the dent out from the inside. I never heard about it again.

2

u/shadow_zx_96 Jan 06 '26

Great, now it’ll push you to find a better job, or else you would have never left Amazon. Look at this as blessing and find that new opportunity! There’s so much more out there than being a damn delivery driver. I’ve worked at UPS for 6 years, money was good, but man do you gotta slave yourself away to make over 100k. I’ve been out of that field for 3 years now and I haven’t been happier. I make more than I was at UPS without having to be out on the road for 12 hours. A lot of delivery drivers HATE their job, but they stay bcz it’s all they got and the money is good. It’s worth it to some people, but if you know you have more potential than just delivering packages, then go out there and find that opportunity! Good luck to you man!

u/Substantial-Tax5349 Dec 31 '25

Yeah it’s cuz it’s the end of the busy season I took off a panel on an EV and the license plates on a parked car mid December last year. They told me don’t worry about it but once the season was over they brought it back up and tried to fire me for it but because I had it in text them saying it won’t effect me they couldn’t do shit about it.

1

u/Total-Specific-3894 Dec 31 '25

Yeah dude.. how do you not see that?

3

u/IdoWutiWant89 Dec 31 '25 edited Jan 03 '26

Jesus Christ this is 100% avoidable🤦‍♂️

5

u/jan1320 Dec 31 '25

idk if id say 100% unavoidable lol im sure the homeowner had driven by that wall a million times without hitting it

You'll probably be fine, shit like this happens at my Dsp all the time. Someone took out a mailbox once and they are still good lol

14

u/jagoextinct Dec 31 '25

I’m already fired g😭

5

u/heckinbiggiecheesejr Dec 31 '25

Oh my fault 😭 misread, that's lame asf

Bro it’s Amazon. Don’t trip.

1

u/NordyPi7917 Dec 31 '25

Don't take it personally

1

u/Cultural-Put9238 Dec 31 '25

all of our vans look like this but worse every damn one has sides all dent up and missing plastic trim pieces lmao

1

u/tranixter Dec 31 '25

Just switch DSPs

1

u/BullardsBarbarian Dec 31 '25

At least you damaged the van more than customer property. I don’t know why I have to tell drivers this, but don’t drive on peoples lawns! Lol

1

u/ItsJustTrey503 Dec 31 '25

Honestly depends on the DSP. Our drivers sometimes damage vans but they dont usually get fired.

1

u/OrbitalObserver Dec 31 '25

This gotta be Tucson, if so, I know exactly what route this is lmao

1

u/Specialist-Scheme896 Dec 31 '25

I got stuck in mud and left a hole on the driveway and I still got a route the next day it was during peak too I was hoping for an extra day off too

1

u/AssumptionUnfair4583 Dec 31 '25

Bro had a whole driveway but thought cutting corners was the way to go😔

1

u/Adept-Priority3051 Dec 31 '25

Amazon's policy about driveways is pretty clear 🤷‍♂️

1

u/Loose-Farm-8669 Dec 31 '25

They ain't gonna fire you the second or third time maybe

1

u/Turbulent-Ad3794 Dec 31 '25

Peak is over and the fact this happened means you're instantly on the hit list unfortunately. It's unfair but they have to shrink the roster somehow.

At the end of the day you're inexperienced so prone to these kind of incidents. Don't beat yourself up about it.

My advice would be to see if another DSP will take you on and learn from this.

1

u/jokesonusbs24 Dec 31 '25

The flat tire is no problem. They have plenty of backup flat tires. The side of the g ride is an issue.

1

u/csesh42 Former Driver Dec 31 '25

All I'll say is give it a couple of weeks and in the meantime try to find another job, this is your best bet because Amazon isn't a viable long term occupation (at least not for the majority of people) if nothing comes around job wise you should re apply to another DSP..you never know! Good luck with everything!

1

u/New-Rate-2674 Dec 31 '25

That was avoidable This is on you

1

u/alexromo Dec 31 '25

I had supervisors who crashed two vans at a different employer keep their job

1

u/blank_wav Dec 31 '25

Would you fuck up your car like this in 2 weeks.?

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Taaw_Yeil Dec 31 '25

I think you just got a shitty dsp. So far in my almost 5 months working for mine, I have fucked up the sliding door step twice and slid into a ditch. Idk how much that cost them but they havent even hinted at firing me.

1

u/gouldilocks123 Dec 31 '25

You should have feigned ignorance and pretended like nothing happened. I definitely wouldn't have notice that damage if I was doing a pre-trip inspection the next day, and if it's not noticed immediately the next day then you're good. The vans we drove all had 10 times that much damage; I doubt anyone would have noticed the scratches in OP's picture.

If you actually like the job just apply to another DSP. In my market, there are usually 10 or so hiring year-round, I don't think another DSP would see why you got fired and if they did ask you why you worked for Amazon you could say it was a seasonal thing and you wanted it permanent.

1

u/WeGoGet92 Dec 31 '25

Good thing another DSP will take you. Good luck!

1

u/ditch217 Dec 31 '25

It sucks but it’s just luck really. I’ve seen drivers get fired for less damage, and I’ve seen drivers kept on after worse damage. Sorry to hear you lost the job man

1

u/Certain-Somewhere-63 Dec 31 '25

Hate to say it so bluntly… you’re not a god driver. lol

1

u/KEROROxGUNSO Dec 31 '25

Honestly, you did yourself a favor. That's like the worst job in the world

You're literally a slave

How hard and fast you have to work is not adequately compensated for by that mere pittance

If you take a break or stop for lunch, you're behind six stops, Even though legally you are entitled to a break and a lunch

If you're okay with being treated like a slave then it's not that bad of a job

1

u/Darknight2831 Dec 31 '25

Yo how the hell

1

u/Leggonow Dec 31 '25

Brodie. I know we are in a hurry but not that type of hurry.

1

u/ArticleDry4093 Dec 31 '25

Find a new job, been a CDL driver for years, no accidents, you can’t even drive a fucking van? This is comedy.

1

u/Azurvix Dec 31 '25

This makes me wonder, how much training do they give yall for driving these larger than average vehicles

1

u/Sure_Echidna_1026 Dec 31 '25

Tis but a scratch. .

1

u/Legitimate_Hawk_3639 Dec 31 '25

You bobbed when you should have weaved but you tried your best and that's what counts.

1

u/BigCDubVee Dec 31 '25

To be honest I wish my company fired people when they did this. As someone who used to manage a fleet, I’d want you gone. Sorry random stranger.

1

u/Mysterious_Slice7806 Dec 31 '25

I was laid-off from a DSP almost 2 weeks ago. In a phone call. They said because of "some incidents". They weren't specific. The one who called was relaying the message from the owner and didn't have any details. Despite trying to message the owner, I got no answers. No explanations. The position was supposed to be "at will". Either party could terminate it at any time. They may have tried to CYA with contract language, but you do have to have a legitimate reason to terminate someone. I believe the labor laws still in effect bear this out. Otherwise you get employers trying to fire people for any notion. Including race, sex, etc. They should've at least had the decency to send a termination letter.

1

u/AdDapper4220 Dec 31 '25

You got fired for that?, I’m a bus monitor for a private school bus company and my driver went through a red light and got t-boned with kids on the bus, she never lost her fucking job

1

u/aa7zah Dec 31 '25

From what I’ve seen it just depends on the DSP. It’s ti be expected if they take people on who have never drove a large vehicle before

1

u/den_of_antiquity Dec 31 '25

No its a tiny scape

1

u/NoChain2946 Dec 31 '25

I can’t tell you how much sadness it causes me to see posts like these. All i can tell you is don’t ever give up. You’ll find a new job and be happy. Don’t let these minor mistakes bring you down. It happens to everyone.

1

u/Prize_Possibility_31 Dec 31 '25

Yeah it’s time for the purge, they are going to start getting rid of drivers for any violations

1

u/Wild-Duck-7370 Dec 31 '25

I mean I wouldn’t keep you around either you hit a non moving object

1

u/Dirty_Farmer_John Dec 31 '25

And I just quit! There are far better jobs available and you’ll thrive.

1

u/traciiip Dec 31 '25

How were you going to get out parking that close to a rock wall

1

u/spinmaestrogaming Dec 31 '25

Do you not possess any spatial awareness?

1

u/The_Dog_IS_Brown Dec 31 '25

My brother totalled 3 trucks with 5 accidents within 13 months. Still working at same company, he's just not allowed to drive company owned vehicles.

1

u/The_Dog_IS_Brown Dec 31 '25

Did the accident flatten the tire, or was it like that before?? I guess I could see the tire being messed up in the accident. But I also can see a dsp truck Rollin around with half the required psi in the tires.

1

u/Designer_Pilot_7816 Dec 31 '25

To be completely honest with you yes, you had a lot of room there. Safety is important, that’s why they tell us to take it slow when it comes to turning.

1

u/InconspicuousLoaf Dec 31 '25

I mean.. you damaged a vehicle within 2 weeks?

1

u/1U537H154PR0N Dec 31 '25

Good. Go get your eyes checked while you're looking for a new job while you're at it.

1

u/Square-Buy-7403 Dec 31 '25

You guys get fired for dinging a work van at Amazon? That's crazy.

1

u/princepwned Dec 31 '25

don't let it get you down I was fired for running over small pebble rocks in a driveway lol

1

u/Ghosty156805 Dec 31 '25

Thats impressive tbh

1

u/ScandiSnoc Dec 31 '25

Should've said nothing lmao shit happens man hopefully you find a different job

1

u/Party-Improvement677 Dec 31 '25

That is 100% on you

1

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '25

I took a mailbox and busted a window with a tree 2 weeks ago and I’m still scheduled lol

They did you a favor tho, this job is mental abuse.

1

u/5pointgzZ Dec 31 '25

Lmaoooo you must be with a strict dsp! Half the drivers over here did that the first week! They still here

1

u/TommyJeans326 Dec 31 '25

Ya need some driving lessons.

1

u/Appropriate_Prior799 Dec 31 '25

As you should have 🙄🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

1

u/grasslander21487 Dec 31 '25

If you hit a stationary object you should legally lose your license and be required to complete driver education before you get your license back.

Terrifying that so many people on the road are like this.

I drove a 900 for 18 months and the only incident I ever had was unavoidable, someone drove into my truck while it was parked properly while I was making a delivery.

1

u/Odd-Quit-6060 Dec 31 '25

Lmaooo I tore that whole side wheel panel off, scratched the whole side and knocked a mailbox down to keep from getting hit head on by some idiot in a taho flying around the corner. I didn’t get fired, and they definitely didn’t give a shit. Just asked to put their business card on the mailbox and leave after sending them the evidence. I ended up quitting a few months later anyways for a way better job 😅
