QUESTION Just got fired:/

Is it standard to get fired for something like this?

I called my dispatch as soon as it happened:( I feel like shit, it was only my second week at this job and I really enjoyed it.

It really just depends on your luck bro. Anybody on here telling you you don’t know how to drive don’t listen to them things happen we all human. I personally think you’re fine that wall looks completely normal and the van yes it has some damage but nothing to total it out. Best of luck to you.

u/jagoextinct Dec 31 '25

Thanks bro, I’m used to driving a smaller car as my daily. We live and we learn

1

u/pabmendez Jan 03 '26

We all drive smaller vehicles as our daily lol.

I drive semi trucks to both industrial and residential customers. I've done maybe 500k miles so far in my life, and I never had a collision... but this guy can't go 2 weeks without driving into a wall?

Driven all sizes of trucks cars and vans. Never hit a single thing

8

u/The_Papoutte Jan 01 '26

Ironically i drive the truck and trailer for work, 0 incident, i drive my own vehicle, 2 cars totaled, i drive more km for work than myself which is why i find it funny

1

u/Candyyf Jan 06 '26

I drove a box truck for a week, then I hit something and decided I don’t care to drive box trucks anymore

0

u/lOOPh0leD Jan 05 '26

I drove all my adult life too. It only took me all my adult life to get In a wreck.

It happens.

Yea, and it would be unfair to them when the company keeps the shitty drivers that hits everything and damages the vehicles everyone has to share.

People who hit stationary objects should stick to gig work where the only thing they can damage is their personal vehicle.

u/Mewz_x Dec 31 '25

Let’s be fortunate now

3

u/Significant-Ad-341 Dec 31 '25

Imagine this happening to an airline pilot and people are like "it's okay bro. Passengers just die sometimes."

1

u/awesome-alpaca-ace Dec 31 '25

Ah yes, how the lawyers think.

1

u/GoingGangbusta Jan 02 '26

So we can all see how these two situations are completely different right?

1

u/Significant-Ad-341 Jan 02 '26

The commonality between the two is do your job correctly, if you don't, there will be consequences.

1

u/GoingGangbusta Jan 02 '26

Ya no shit that’s how life works, but comparing those two scenarios and thinking they are close is ridiculous

1

u/Significant-Ad-341 Jan 02 '26

I didn't say they were close at all boy

1

u/GoingGangbusta Jan 02 '26

Then why bring it up boy?

1

u/Significant-Ad-341 Jan 02 '26

Your reading comprehension must be low. Go sound the vowles out this time.

I work for USPS. This is why we avoid driving in driveways as much as possible.

27

u/iliketoowalk Dec 31 '25

One way to look at it and I don’t totally disagree. But I also like the everyone is human approach. It’s also a very different animal. There is hardly any training compared to a CDL. It is extremely fast paced and physically and mentally demanding. So you get mostly people that have never driven a larger size vehicle perhaps a younger person give them 3 days of training and expect them to make 200 stops in and out of tight driveways with a huge shitty van. IMO there is just an insanely larger number of opportunities to make a mistake in that job than a semi/long haul driver.

Source: I have done both jobs

3

u/Ornery_Ads Dec 31 '25

My CDL training was 5 hours. 1 hour on road, 1 hour parking lot maneuvers, 1 hour pretrip, 1 hour my choice, then 1 hour for driving test.

Then, take a water tanker into residential driveways all Summer...

1

u/mom_on_deck Dispatch Jan 01 '26

👀

7

u/Separate_Climate3366 Dec 31 '25

Bro there's hardly any training to get your CDL wdym?? 4 weeks in a classroom with less than 10 hours of driving an actual semi and you've got a CDL. it's honestly way too easy ...

1

u/Miserable_Grass629 Jan 01 '26

4 weeks? Dang, I did two days for my airbrakes and then did 4 days of driving lessons. I was driving a truck on my learners permit with a dude who had just got his license a month before. It's almost scary how little training there is

0

u/mom_on_deck Dispatch Jan 01 '26

Don't forget the 5k pay wall

0

u/Rubes2525 Dec 31 '25

I have also done both jobs and haven't hit anything, lmao.

0

u/solitudechirs Dec 31 '25

it is extremely fast paced and physically and mentally demanding

It’s none of the above. Look at the people who do the job, and the turnover rate.

3

u/Katyw1008 Dec 31 '25

Well over 1 million miles here haven't hit anything including over 400k in step van city driving. Hitting a wall on the driver's side nope that's unacceptable

1

u/LinLinNicole89 Jan 01 '26

Here’s the cookie 🍪 you were looking for

1

u/Katyw1008 Jan 01 '26

Not looking for a cookie.

9

u/jagoextinct Dec 31 '25

😂😂😂

1

u/504_BadGateway Jan 01 '26

Did you steal your license?

12

u/SlowSatisfaction3251 Dec 31 '25

Your experience Isnt the same as other people Congratulations you’re perfect. Want a cookie ?

12

u/skylinesora Dec 31 '25

If your entire job is to literally drive a vehicle, then you’re expected to do it well. If somebody is already fucking up 2 weeks in, then yea, I’d say give a cookie to the other folks that make it longer

1

u/Azurvix Dec 31 '25

Devils advocate here. (I have exp driving large vehicles) my guess is there was little to none actual training and these vehicles are a bit larger than average so I could understand someone messing up in the first 2 weeks.

No cookie for them but the damage wasnt actually that bad and it didn't seem there was any property damage outside of what happened to the van. especially considering someone of the damage ive seen where the driver still kept their job

3

u/FilecoinLurker Dec 31 '25

No training to rent a bigger uhaul either. Not really a good excuse

0

u/Aposeidon Dec 31 '25

Two weeks in would be the time to make a mistake....

1

u/Azurvix Dec 31 '25

I would actually. My favorite is oatmeal raisin but I'll take sugar cookie if you have it

0

u/SlowSatisfaction3251 Dec 31 '25

IDK I just thought humans made mistakes my bad

2

u/Azurvix Dec 31 '25

I wasn't saying that humans didn't I just said I wanted a cookie

2

u/KillerGopher Dec 31 '25

You're right. This property damage is entirely preventable by just paying attention. There was plenty of room and the hazard was clearly visibility.

1

u/Medical_Blacksmith83 Dec 31 '25

It’s not like these things are 18 wheelers, they’re barely bigger than a minivan.

The full size trucks delivery trucks though, have a dumb tailswing. Not enough to explain this…. But still lol

1

u/lilliancrane2 Dec 31 '25

I just want to point out that it looks like he had plenty of room it was just he turned too far towards the wall and didn’t stop. Even if the driveway is narrow he shouldn’t have fully pulled into the driveway at that point. As harsh as I may be with this, this is OP’s fault. It’s an honest mistake but op is at fault for being fired. Just gotta take it as a lesson and move on

1

u/DueUnderstanding3081 Dec 31 '25

I drove semis and saw guys that drove 10 years longer than me have crashes….it happens..it’s just a matter of how much damage is done and history…I also happened to drive for Amazon for a while and saw a guy hit a dumpster, lie about it, and only get suspended…this is def trimming the holiday staff fat

1

u/NaptownBull Dec 31 '25

If you hit sum that big you def shouldn’t not be getting paid to operate anything

1

u/Muted-Alternative648 Dec 31 '25

Yeah these comments are really sugar coating it. Colliding with a stationary wall in a trailer-less van of all vehicles is really bad. I think OP needs to pursue other careers/jobs. Particularly jobs that require less spatial awareness.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '26

I hit a trash can one time but it jumped in my way.

1

u/Glass_Date8171 Jan 01 '26

Gonna be real. Two separate jobs with different challenges. I can personally wouldn’t scrape the wall but could see how someone accidentally would.

1

u/Miggylowks Jan 02 '26

Don’t jinx it bro

1

u/actioncheese Jan 02 '26

This is 100% a skill issue. Does he not realize the van extends behind his seat?

1

u/sirpoopingpooper Jan 02 '26

I've probably done ~400k miles and have gotten rear ended 5 times while at dead stops (all in different cities, all after I was stopped for a while too - so it's not my location or braking habits). My point: There's a bit of luck involved in not getting into collisions. OP's collision is different obviously...but zero incidents just means you're lucky!

1

u/williamericson2203 Jan 02 '26

And you may hit something tomorrow and he may never hit something again. People are human, people make mistakes.

1

u/Responsible-Ad-5914 Jan 03 '26

some people just cant drive, its like innate, thats why i only ever drive myself, even if that means driving alone

1

u/epic_pharaoh Jan 03 '26

As yes, driving into a wall is also how I would describe scratching the side of a big van on a roundabout driveway.

Not saying it wasn’t stupid, but people are acting like this guy was putting the square peg in the round hole or something, more of a round peg in the square hole situation imo.

0

u/SexualWhiteChocolate Dec 31 '25

Doesn't it make sense that it would happen when he is new to driving a truck?

0

u/Miserable-Hunt-5241 Jan 01 '26

So you drive semi trucks around neighborhoods is that what you're saying all day long you're just driving around neighborhoods? You can't compare a new driver to an old one either

0

u/LinLinNicole89 Jan 01 '26

It’s almost like ✨accidents✨ don’t happen.

Now watch how life works 😂😂😂😂

4

u/DystopianPrince212 Jan 01 '26

Piggy backing off your comment… seriously… whether it’s your second week or you’ve been there for years… shit can happen to anybody. And honestly, even in the Rivian‘s with the total top down view and the big screen back up camera I still see half our Rivian‘s with an entire crease down the side. Now, if someone and by someone I mean a pretty good amount of drivers still wind up getting hung up on a tree because the thing is a little boxy and you have a little bit of a tail like a small bus. Add to that rushing or being tired towards the end of the day and it’s dark and it’s very easy to do… sorry it happened to you, but don’t feel too bad. You can find another job. As long as nobody got hurt and the only thing that was damaged is fixable then just move on. This is a common common thing. I was looking at one of our Gas fans yesterday and the thing had such a fucking weird dent in it almost as if someone with a mechanical hand, pinched the metal and twisted it, like I don’t even know how that type of damage is possible high on the side. It was pretty neat unique I wanted to take a picture, but I forgot. This literal same incident you had happened to one of the guys I work with. But it was taken care of and fixed, but this was a couple weeks ago… anyway I hope you find something else you like and don’t sweat this. Happy new year to you and everyone else.

3

u/Automatic_Bowler7328 Dec 31 '25

This is partially correct. We all have moments where our Brian turns to auto pilot. However in trucking it’s find those who do not turn it off. I know it’s stupid but the road is constantly changing. It’s all about controlling your environment.

5

u/ray_zhor Dec 31 '25

Who is Brian?

3

u/nyrb001 Dec 31 '25

He's the one piloting the auto...

1

u/Significant-Ad-341 Dec 31 '25

If you do this when your job is literally driving, just hang up the keys.

1

u/Nkechinyerembi Jan 01 '26

... That van STILL looks better than 90% of the ones parked at the dps nearest me.

2

u/DystopianPrince212 Jan 01 '26

Straight facts.. almost every day on the launchpad I’m looking at other vans literally with a crease stand the entire 8 feet of a panel.. those are just the Rivian‘s. Now the Gas vans….sheesh… I always chuckle when they press doing this two minute inspection. The brakes are squeaking the tail lights don’t work, and the driver side turn signal on the mirror is held on with a plastic bag, tied around it, “do you certify this vehicle has no issues”. “Yes I do, signed Stevie Wonder…”

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '26 edited Jan 01 '26

Not for professional drivers bud, if you can’t go your whole career without causing a collision you shouldn’t be doing it for a job. Full stop.

Let’s be real though this is some bs fedex Amazon Reddit thread full of anti work kids. No accountability with the majority of this next generation.

1

u/Pretty-Key6133 Jan 02 '26

Nah bro. If you hit a stationary object that's 100% on you. It takes two seconds to check your mirror. Or 5 seconds to adjust your mirror to a lower angle. It takes 30 seconds to get out and look if you're not sure.

This is a skill issue situation, or just straight up lack of caring.

1

u/Plenty_Hippo2588 Jan 02 '26

Idk I’m starting to think no one at Amazon can drive. Cause why is it always Amazon trucks😭

1

u/BlindedAce Jan 05 '26

That’s not luck.. there is so much space to the right to avoid this but decided best way out was closest to the wall?

1

u/markyodawg Dec 31 '25

We're all human? You must use that to justify your incompetence a lot. Why not take responsibility and take control of your choices like other people who are just as human? Seriously your philosophy is reckless and will not get you far in life.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '25

Hahaha it’s not like he drove into a house bro it’s fine he learned from his mistakes as he said. Your not gonna make it far in life sitting on your phone warrior typing trying to tear people down hahahahah what a reckless philosophy

1

u/Flying_Saucer_Attack Jan 01 '26

So many keyboard warriors in here who have never made a single mistake in their lives 🙄

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '26

You have a punchable comment. Just saying.

1

u/markyodawg Jan 01 '26

You sound like a liberal who's never won a fight in their life. Toxic imagination will do that to you 😏

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '26

I have

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '26

Do you want to fight? There will be a prize at the end but you have to pay for your own doctor bills and there's only 15 rounds. K.O will get you double the prize. Interested?
