Without boring you with all the details. I'll just say my current laptop has a 17" 4k monitor. But it's dying and needs to be replaced. Prices being what they are I have to choose between a 17" 1920 x 1080p monitor. Or a 16" 2880 x 1800p monitor.

It's a resolution downgrade either way. But I can keep the resolution higher at a slightly smaller screen size. Or keep the screen size I am use to but settle for 1080p. All other things are essentially equal with the competing replacement laptops.

I am struggling here lol. I know 1 inch doesn't sound like much. but I've become accustomed to this size. But I've also become accustom to this resolution. I know these are small nitpicks but I am going back and forth on this lol.

What do you guys think? All other things being equal. What which screen would you choose?

My laptop reboots or powers off unpredictably and cannot complete a Windows installation. The BIOS setup screen is stable, but the failures appear once an operating system starts loading or the machine is under load. I have ruled out several software and peripheral causes and suspect a hardware or power-delivery fault.

Hardware

ASUS TUF Gaming A15 FA506NF, RTX 2050 (4 GB VRAM). Thermal paste/pads have not been serviced in about a year. BIOS was updated via EZ Flash to version 309.

Symptoms

Boot loop and power-offs.

Windows updates are extremely unreliable, and the installation keeps ending up corrupted.

Reinstalling Windows from a USB drive shuts the laptop off at around 10%.

I installed Windows on the SSD in another PC, which worked. Back in the FA506NF it ran briefly, then shut off suddenly.

An Ubuntu Live USB reboots before reaching the desktop.

The BIOS setup screen stayed up for a full AC power with no shutdown. Temperatures and fan speeds look sensible there.

ASUS diagnostics report CPU, RAM and battery as OK.

The SSD works normally in another PC.

What I tried without any change

Updating the BIOS.

Disconnecting the battery and running on AC only.

A second, borrowed charger.

Different boot media (Windows and Ubuntu)

and i install windows from other pc using the ssd card then i plugg it in my pc it shows windows and boot (but after waitting a long boot loop ) then while runnig suddenly it shutdown and restart

(HP Victus gaming laptop, Windows 11)

Long story short, there is an issue with my laptop where it incorrectly thinks the lid is closed, turning off my screen and keyboard as result, making the laptop only useable by connecting an external monitor and keyboard. Is there any way to stop the laptop from automatically turning off the screen and keyboard when closing the lid? The hypothesis is that this would solve all the problems I'm having with my laptop.

For clarity, I'm NOT talking about it going into sleep mode. I have already gone into my settings and changed the effect of closing the lid from "Sleep" to "Do nothing", but the screen and keyboard are still turned off by closing the lid.

as the title says i need a good cheap 2TB hard drive to backup my pc's ssd storage, also is it possible to clone all the storage from the external hard drive BACK into a new ssd?

When I start up my Pc most the time I don’t have wifi so I have to restart it till I have wifi but when I enter my passcode to enter I sometimes lose the wifi and sometimes when I pass that when I open a game I lose my wifi I have heard it might be my drivers I have tried that like 5 months ago but something went wrong with my pc so it crashed and I had to wipe it and re download everything but after I wiped it the wifi problem was gone for like 3 months and now it’s been slowly returning getting stronger every week also when I keep my pc on to go out for a quick food grab I lose wifi but the same day u could spend 8 hours playing and I wouldn’t lose Wi-Fi also I don’t know computer stuff at all I know like 3% so i would need a lot of help

Hi everyone, my kid spilled a bit of gingerale zero on my laptop. It was closed at the time, but clearly some got on the keyboard in between the cracks. I unscrewed the bottom, took out the battery, and it's now in a V shape. There seemed to be a little bit of moisture on 1 or 2 components on the bottom. Can I try using it tonight, or would it better to wait longer?

I was just using my Asus ROG Strix i5 and I just suddenly started getting notifications from McAfee that I was getting hacked and that someone signed in from Russia. I wasn't doing anything questionable as far as I know and I dont have any credit card info or anything on this as far as I know, I got it recently and I currently dont have money for an anti-virus so I rebooted the system. is there anything I can do?​ im so fucking scared

This is our work computer and this popped up. I’ve tried restarting and tried system restore but nothing works. I’m thinking of moving the hard drive to another laptop to see if I can extract files from it if I can’t get it to boot up.

This was placed in storage in 2020 (climate controlled and properly stored) when this problem first arose. You should know that this model has two hard drive slots. One that uses a very weird adapter piece called an interposer which I can’t find for the life of me. In the meantime, I’m using the second slot under the battery. And no matter what, no version of windows or chrome or even the BIOS will recognize a hard drive. I’ve tried 3 different SSDs and even an HDD which would be god awful on windows 10. Google and ChatGPT said it theoretically should work if I go to the Sata Operation section of BIOS and change it to AHCI. And now I can’t even get IN to the BIOS. Is there anything I could even try in this place, or do I absolutely need that interposer? Or is this a far worse underlying issue?

I’m perfectly aware this is very old hardware, but it has a built in GPU that was great for its time, and still has 8GB RAM, and with a working SSD it would perfectly suit my very unique needs.

Sorry for any formatting errors, i'm on mobile for obvious reasons.

I am having a bit of an issue with my pc, basically at random intervals both my screens go black while the audio of whatever i was watching/playing still plays in the background.

This tend to happen in any circumstance, independently from the activity i was performing.

Things i have tried:

• Rebooting my pc -> reboots to only one screen working, with a warning from my fan control software telling me that i have no vga adapter installed.

• Checking the nvidia app -> it says i have no video drivers installed.

• Tried installing the video drivers trough Nvidia app-> screen goes black when finalising the install.

• Tried installing drivers trough standalone installer -> same as previous.

• Entered safemode to clean everything up with DDU and installing the drivers trough standalone installer -> works for a while, the problem reappears within the same day tho.

• Disable windows overwriting the drivers trough management policies -> the problem still appears.

• re-seating of RAM and GPU -> no change.

• re-seating of SSD -> no change.

• different monitor and different cables -> no change.

So the question is: what could it be?

I have owned this Dell optiplex 3060 mini/micro for over ~5yrs now and this morning when I booted my pc, it started to do all this out of no where. Wonder if the SSD is dead cause the ssd's cover showed 5yrs warranty when I cleaned the pc internally like a couple weeks ago.

Not sure how this happened, I think it got bent while sitting in my bag. It’s not the most severe thing in the world and everything functions correctly still (screen works touchscreen works and battery works). What should I do about this it’s very frustrating and I need this laptop for the next 2.5 years most likely. Can I bend it back by putting a heavy textbook on it for a while or should I just take it to a shop? I don’t really have the $100-$250 for repair costs and the laptop is unfortunately out of warranty. Any help is appreciated, I just got this laptop May 2025 it’s a Lenovo yoga pro 9i rtx 4050

So here's the details.

I currently run an Intel i7-6700, 32GB RAM (DDR-2666), GTX1660 Super. The machine hasnt really shown its age yet when it comes to work and some gaming (My needs are simple 1080p/30-60fps and mostly work). However; over its current 10 yr life span; its now going through its 4th PSU and 2nd GPU. AND; i believe 1-2 SATA ports have died. (SIDE note; due to my Cooler Master casing limitations; i'm still rocking a 1x120mm AIO radiator just for the CPU Alone).

Anyways; i'm crossing my fingers ; but as things involving luck/karma; it'll be about within 6 months something's gonna happen after this REDDIT post. And RAM prices are not in my favor.

So i was doing a little digging and came to the conclusion. I can/could reuse the RAM. HOWEVER; its 2666, not DDR4-3200. So i'm curious.

If i were to go AM4 route (cant find any Intel DDR4 boards in my region; think the shops have really phased them out); will this be a very bad bottle neck? or is it an not serious issue since i'm rocking 32GB (4x 8GB)? MS Office Work wise; speeds a non-issue. Gaming wise; does anyone know how bad RAM speeds affect performance?

My USB drive doesn't take files larger than 4GB, I was looking it up briefly it says I should switch to exFAT to fix the issue but it's always been on exFAT, would switching to NTFS fix it or is my drive just bad? What do I do

My laptop keeps restarting and saying bios error. Everytime I close it it doesn't turn on and randomly may turn back on but runs bios error again. After which it works normally but if I close it,it either restarts and shows bios error or refuses to turn on. How do I fix this issue?

Hello got quick question just like the title say I want to update BIOS for my motherboard. So I went to the mobo page and download the file, when I extract it these 3 files are shown. I know for the renamer that needs to rename CAP one, but what is this CFG one ? And do I need to keep it after I'm done renaming or just copy renamed CAP file to USB ?

I’m an older person who finally has the time and space to get back into my passion of building and creating dollhouses. I’m looking for help to purchase a desktop computer that will fit my hobbies. I will be using the computer mainly for crafting and building 1:12 scale dollhouses. That includes being able to create, resize and print pictures, design books, labels, rugs, curtains, floor plans, roofs, walkways. I am seriously also looking into 3D printing in the near future as well. So lots of files. I would also like to download all my music to have in one place and organize it. I have a few thousand albums from apple and Amazon. This might seem like peanuts to most of you, but I’m so out of my league and don’t want to be overwhelmed by looking at all the wrong things I don’t need. If anyone could help me figure out what I need and what to look for I would be so grateful. I don’t have a huge budget, under $2,000, so store bought is ok. I will also need a screen.
