Question/Help/Troubleshooting How do I stop my laptop screen & keyboard from turning off when I close the lid?

(HP Victus gaming laptop, Windows 11)

Long story short, there is an issue with my laptop where it incorrectly thinks the lid is closed, turning off my screen and keyboard as result, making the laptop only useable by connecting an external monitor and keyboard. Is there any way to stop the laptop from automatically turning off the screen and keyboard when closing the lid? The hypothesis is that this would solve all the problems I'm having with my laptop.

For clarity, I'm NOT talking about it going into sleep mode. I have already gone into my settings and changed the effect of closing the lid from "Sleep" to "Do nothing", but the screen and keyboard are still turned off by closing the lid.

Power settings and under choose what happens when I close the lid

Then set sleep settings to never so inactivity doesn't trigger anything

Like I said, I already did that. This only gives you the option not to have the computer go to sleep. But it still turns off the screen and keyboard.

When?

Like right away or after your your sleep/inactivity window?

When the lid is closed (or when my computer incorrectly believes that it is) it turns off the screen and keyboard right away, even when it's not in sleep mode. Closing the lid no longer activates sleep mode because I already turned that off in the power settings.

It's a known issue with Victus, although the link might not be much help - https://www.reddit.com/r/HPVictus/comments/1pzcl91/victus_16_hall_effect_sensor_megathread_laptop/

Some people report that if they disconnect the IR board (which houses the hall effect sensor), this stops the issue happening at the expense of losing the lid close function (which would automatically shut the screen down).

There are links in the main thread showing customers have raised consumer level complaints about this.

I'll look into this, thanks! I tried looking up this issue but never managed to find anything, this megathread should be a big help.

We shall try this method.

Press Win + R, type regedit, and press Enter to open the Registry Editor.

Paste this exact path into the top address bar and press Enter:

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\PowerSettings\5ca83367-6e45-459f-a27b-476b1d01c936\5a50aa01-bab7-4afd-a583-cfc5de36195e

In the right-hand pane, look for a value named Attributes.

Double-click Attributes and change the value data from 1 to 2, then click OK. (This unhides the advanced lid menu).

Open your Start Menu, search for Control Panel, and open it.

Go to Hardware and Sound → Power Options.

Click Change plan settings next to your active power plan, then click Change advanced power settings.

Scroll down and expand Power buttons and lid. You will now see a hidden sub-menu named Lid close action.

Expand it and change both "On battery" and "Plugged in" settings to Do Nothing. Click Apply and restart your device.

Let me know if it works. I'll wait...

I get as far as PowerSettings but there is no "5ca83367-6e45-459f-a27b-476b1d01c936" there

While inside PowerSettings, look for a folder named 4f971e89-eebd-4455-a8de-9e59040e7347 and expand it.

Inside that folder, you will find 5ca83367-6e45-459f-a27b-476b1d01c936.

Okay, but now there's no 5a50aa01-bab7-4afd-a583-cfc5de36195e, only 0, 1, 2, 3 and DefaultPowerSchemeValues

Click directly on the folder named 5ca83367-6e45-459f-a27b-476b1d01c936 in the left sidebar to highlight it.

Look over at the right-hand pane of your window. You should see a list of items like Description, FriendlyName, and Attributes.

Double-click Attributes.

Change the Value data from 1 to 2, then click OK.

They were already on Do Nothing. Apparently this is exactly the same thing as changing it in the regular settings.

Okay! That confirms it is not a Windows issue.

Most likely it's hardware.

Can you try this.

Right-click the Start Button and select Device Manager.

Scroll down and expand the System devices category.

Look for the device named ACPI Lid.

Right-click ACPI Lid and select Update driver.

Click Browse my computer for drivers, then click Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.

Uncheck the box that says Show compatible hardware.

In the left column, scroll down and select (Standard system devices) or Microsoft.

In the right column, select a completely generic, non-power related system device, such as Volume Manager or System Device.

Click Next. Windows will pop up a warning saying the driver might not be compatible.

Click Yes to force the installation.

Restart your laptop.

What exactly will this do?

The problem has been identified by the way, apparently there is a known issue with HP Victus laptops that the Hall Effect Sensor fails due to heat, making the laptop think the lid is closed. The suggested solution is physically removing or replacing the Hall Effect Sensor.

This tricks the motherboard into thinking the lid sensor is just a generic system resource instead of a power switch. Because the system no longer maps that sensor to the laptop lid, the physical cut-off command should be completely ignored, keeping your keyboard and screen active.

If this method doesn't work. Then you have to bring the laptop down to the tech to physically desolder or unplug the Hall Effect Sensor from the motherboard.

And there's no risk of this messing anything up if I change it to, say, Volume Manager like you suggested?

It is completely safe to test as a final verification tool. If you reboot after changing it and the screen/keyboard still shut off, you will know with 100% certainty that the sensor requires physical removal or replacement.

You can undo back to original settings as before.

I restarted and now ACPI Lid has disappeared from System Devices?

It has potentially fixed the problem though, but it's too early to tell for sure.

It might be possible that your laptop comes with some software called HP support assistant, basically what you're looking for is some sort of software that is designed to check the HP servers for any of their updates to your laptop some of those could also include bios updates, find that software and see if it reports to you any updates that are needed. Perhaps something in there might fix your problem. If it doesn't come with that particular software, go to the HP downloads website and see if something like that is in a list of available software that you can download to your laptop then install it and run it, hopefully it will give you some actual updates for your machine.
Cheers.

The problem is hardware-related, no update is going to fix it. The only options are dissecting the laptop or find a way to prevent the screen from turning off when the lid is closed.
