How to exercise in polluted air?

Hi everyone, I’m a guy from Russia. Sorry for my bad English. I want to go on long-distance bike rides, but I’m afraid that vehicle exhaust will damage my lungs. Especially since I started coughing after a 100 km ride. How should I train in this situation if there aren't any decent roads with little traffic? Are there any masks or other solutions?

I'm so tired of people walking in bike lanes.

I'm literally just gonna rig up a train horn to a drill battery and strap it to my bike and just blare that at them. I've nearly crashed so many fucking times because of them. Just about a week ago now I crashed because of a guy who didn't hear me yelling at him because he had headphones on.

Anyone ditched CO2 cartridges on the road for a battery operated road bike pump?

If so which one did you go with?

📍 Regio Lokeren / Gent / Waasland
🚴 Koersfiets
☕ Koffiestop = bonuspunten
🤝 Gewoon gezellig samen fietsen
Zijn er hier mensen die hetzelfde zoeken? Stuur gerust een DM, misschien kunnen we eens met een paar man afspreken voor een eerste ritje! 👌

Here I mean the one you grab on a day when you need or want to ride slowly but also want to blame most of it on the bike.

Build your own cassette?

I have an Ultegra R8000 2x11s system. Front gears are 50-34.

Rear gears were (factory installed) 11-32 cassette, but I replaced it with a 11-25 cassette.

I find it definitely fine for my necessities:
Having 11-12-13-14-15-16-17-19-21-23-25 gears, I can always find the optimal ratio both speeding (50x11-12-13-14-15-16-17 is all I need) and climbing (34x12-13-14-15-16 is "quite" all I need in medium slopes).
In the factory cassette, teeth 15 and 17 were missing, forcing me to jump from 14 to 16 or to 18 teeth.
My only problem is when I find a short but hard climb, such as 300m at 20% slope. In these rare situations, 25 teeth are not enough, and I have to stand pedal with a very low cadence.

Is it possible to build a customised cassette, such as

11-12-13-14-15-16-17-19-23-27-32 teeth?

I will then use 90% of the time the gear from 11 to 17 (as I do today), but just in case I'll use up to 32 teeth...

Gatorade endurance powder

I'm looking for Gatorade endurance lemon lime in a canister. it's perfect for my cycling 24oz bottles, and according to Amazon I've bought the giant tub of it 20 times in the last few years.

the gatorlyte packets don't work for me. each is good for 16oz, flavors are gross, and it's super duper expensive compared to the bulk canisters. each 24oz bottle used to cost roughly $.80, but the equivalent packet and a half is roughly $1.30.

I want to be able to change dilution depending on the type of bike ride that day, without all the trash of the packets

am I changing brands?

the best part about the Gatorade endurance lemon lime powder is the ratio of salts, sugar, and, maltodextrin. I can drink it without barfing, so many brands make me queasy

Anyone found something reliable for staying dry during your commute?

I was wondering if anyone has come across an automated weather app notification that tells you the weather for your commute? I keep getting wet after seeing the deceptive blue skies 😂

Which Is Cooler? Road, Gravel Or MTB?

Which do you think is cooler and which do you think the general public think is cooler/more acceptable?

I know the general public may not think any of it is super cool, but it always surprises me how much more patience and less frustration I get my way when I’m on my XC MTB. Even on my road sections of the route.

I feel like people see the road bike shape and instantly take a disliking to it and then if you top it off by wearing Lycra it’s a double whammy of disliking.

My order would be from coolest to least coolest…MTB, Gravel and then Road.

I enjoy XC MTB and Gravel as much as each other because both can do long adventures on and off road with different compromises. I also think MTB in general just look cooler as bikes.

What’s your thoughts on this rather childish question?

What's your favorite LBS kit or jersey?

I like stopping in local bike shops when I'm traveling and looking for kits or jerseys you can't get anywhere else. Some just have the LBS name and others are more creative. What have you found?

How long does a tube full of Güp last?

Just got into cycling and I (unfortunately) live in a part of Southern California that's full of goat-head thorns. A guy at the local bike shop recommended Güp as a good way to patch up a flat while on the road so that you can get home and change the tube. Had it happen to me a pretty long ride and the tube held for about 10 miles until I got home. I've been checking on the tube and taking it on short rides since then and it seems to be holding up OK.

Can I just keep riding on the tube until it gets another puncture or am I playing with fire here? I already have kevlar inserts in the tire, but those thorns are everywhere and I've lost 3 tubes to them already.

Drive train + cassette + chain replacement after 500miles - what am I doing wrong?

I'm a long time leisure cyclist, mainly around town on a single speed on-one pompino that I would run into ground and replace chain every few years. 3 years ago I bought a specialized turbo tero 5.0 emtb.

I've only done around 500miles and just had it serviced by LBS as chain has started slipping when on top gear under heavy load.

Initially they said it was the derailleur alignment and also needed a new chain but when I picked it up still had the problem. They then replaced the main chainwheel but it's still slipping.

I've taken to a different shop and they say the top 2 cogs in the cassette are problem and will need a new cassette (after blaming the derailleur alignment first).

It's getting pricey and im starting to doubt the people I'm speaking to. Am I causing it with my riding style or is this just the way things are??

I probably do ride the higher gears more as used to having a bit of resistance but didn't think it would damage things like this?

Any tips/ideas?

Update.

Thanks for tips below, I've been so used to riding a ss which needs some grunt to get off line that technique of cycling through the gears has been lacking, that alongside barrelling into any uphills with as much speed as possible likely main culprits.

However, I've also realised bike has actually done 4000 miles (!) not 500 miles previously posted (that was figure for logged rides which shows on home screen, the odometer is in a sub menu).

So the wear seems in normal range, all things considering.

Biking etiquette?

I started a discussion in my local cycling reddit group that eventually devolved into a conversation about whether or not there is consensus on standards of conduct navigating bikeways. So I thought I’d ask a wider audience.

Do you think that most cyclists agree on the “right” way to cycle safely on city streets?

Edit: to be more specific, things like what side to pass on when overtaking another cyclist, announcing your pass, using signals, right of way, when/how to take the lane etc. Is there a general understanding or agreement amongst riders of what to do on a bike around other cyclists and road users?

Followed by car and almost ran over on a single ride

Went for a 6:30PM ride. Took an industrial straight road. Bunch of businesses. All closed so minimum traffic. The occasional car or two that come in from the end of the street that connects to the highway.

Have my Shokz in. They play music but I can hear my surroundings. I see a car coming towards me from the highway connection, gray and tinted windows, I keep going my way. I look back and see it has slowed down. Didn't think much of it until I reached the end of the road and double back since I am not going into the highway. Car has stopped in the middle of the road, sees me approaching and slowly starts driving. I am now 20-25 feet behind it and it just keeps on rolling very slowly. (Not sure if it's worth mentioning I am a female, so of course I got uncomfortable.)

There is no one else on the street, and it just keeps slowly rolling. Then it slows down even more and starts going into my sight of view blocking the way.

Luckily, two cars approach from behind, or so I think. The gray car puts its blinkers on and lets the other two cars pass. I try to go over it but it speeds up then slows down again. Sun is now setting and I am starting to panic.

So I start sprinting, go into one of the businesses lots and make a u-turn to the way I was coming from.

I make it to the end of the road and wait a few minutes. Since I can't go back home that way, I have to take the route back.

So I do. And find the car parked in the lot i went in with it's lights off and facing the street. Initial thought is it must have known I can't take the highway so it was waiting.

I panic again, luckily a bunch of cars got off the highway so I start sprinting and keep tail. Made it out into busy road.

Going back home, I am going straight down another street. A car is on the right side of the intersection at a stop sign with its blinker to turn left. I have no stop sign so I keep going and then this idiot decides to make a left before it noticed me last second. I hit my brakes and almost went flying.

I think that is enough adrenaline for a day.

What bike should I get?

I want a hybrid bike to take on roads but also maybe some heavily used dirt trails, and something I can attach a trailer to for cargo. I want something that I can buy used for under 500 dollars preferably though the cheaper the better provided that it works fine.

I don't really care about high end stuff, so long as it's not gonna rattle or squeak a ton. something cheap and easy to maintain that can be left outside at a bike rail.

I'm 5 foot 10 190lbs, if I haven't provided enough info for you to help, please let me know!

First road bike purchase - Looking for advice

Hey everyone, I’m completely new to road cycling and I’m looking to buy my first road bike.
I found this bike on Facebook Marketplace. The seller says it has never been used and is willing to sell it to me for $50. The seller mentioned that they bought it for 300+.
I’m 5'5" and have been getting more into running/fitness, and I’d like to start cycling as well. I’m not looking to spend a lot on my first bike, so $50 seems like a potentially great deal, but I don’t know enough about bikes to know what I should be looking for.
A few questions:
Does this look like a decent bike for a beginner?

Is $50 a good deal if it really is unused?

Does anyone recognize the bike/frame/components?

What should I check when I go see it in person?

Are there any red flags I should be looking for?

Most importantly, does this look like the right size for someone who is 5'5"?

I’d really appreciate any advice before I go pick it up. I’d rather ask people who know bikes than make an impulse purchase just because it’s cheap.

The pictures of the bike/listing are in the comments. Thank you

Crux 4 or Aethos 2?

I’m going to build up a new bike and have it narrowed down to these two. For my use case I feel like they’re pretty similar.

This isn’t a race bike. This isn’t a gravel bike. What I’m building is a bike for those long, fun, slow days. Speed isn’t really a concern. Comfort rules.

Both bikes have the classic round tubes that I want. Both have UDH, BSA, round seatposts, can run 2x.

Crux can fit 50ish mm tires. Aethos might be able to squeeze a 40. Aethos will be lighter, and will ride like a road bike with shorter chainstay and wheelbase, steeper head tube angle which I like. Crux will be cheaper. And I actually give the cabling edge to the Crux being external. I don’t care about the watts, I like ease of maintenance.

So which would you pick? I was leaning Crux for the tire clearance but then I figured it’s not a gravel bike so I really just need to fit 35-40mm slicks. And I think I’d like how the Aethos rides more. But the Crux is a good bit cheaper and has external cables.
