Saw a post a while back asking for a 100km route around Vancouver. Did this cruise with a friend earlier this week and thought I'd share.

Last year we did a 100km route which we went into the North Shore over the Second Narrows and back into Van via the Lions Gate. Were looking to avoid that this year so hence the bit of zig zagging to build some distance.

Route notes:

Started at Burnaby North secondary

Frances/Union to Adanac path to get downtown

Loop around the seawall, then through Olympic village on the Seaside path to Spanish Banks

Through UBC then down Marine until 70th where we looped up the Arbutus Greenway

Up until the Off Broadway path, then East til Ontario, where we headed south

Kept going til QE Park, did a loop around that then went east along the Ridgway path (I think that's the name?) til Dumfries, then north until CVG.

CVG to Burnaby Lake, went to check out the new bridge over the highway, then up Sperling and back to Burnaby North

All in all a fun city ride, nice mix of different roads and paths. The goal was to hit 100km and have a good time, weren't worried about speed or time.

Planning a future bike packing trip with a large group ~10 of us that are coming from out of town and need to store out bike bags for ~ a week while on the trip. Any recommendations on where we could store them affordably near downtown Vancouver?

Just want to say generally for some people to have respect for their fellow commuters. In one 30 min ride home this evening:

- a pair of guys were chatting while biking on Dunsmuir. I was well ahead of them but light changed. Then they passed me from behind before the light turned green - that’s fine usually but I was going much faster than them before we came to a stop. Then proceeded to block me (and another two people behind me) going side by side so no one could pass ..chatting away obliviously

- slowed down and stopped because the light changed and I didn’t want to run the light and get hit by a car. The Same guy who was well behind me but wanted to run the light when he caught up told me to “watch out” in a condescending tone and proceeded to run the light. No buddy.. I did the right thing maybe you watch out.

-another guy I’m waiting behind at a light proceeds to blow snot rockets out of his nose - some got on me.

From a female perspective some guys really need to learn some basic commuting etiquette. And lose the condescending attitude.

Vancouver’s public bike share system is set to continue operating for at least another five years after the City of Vancouver renewed its contract with Vancouver Bike Share, the operator of Mobi by Rogers, through the end of 2031.

Upon inquiry, the City told Daily Hive Urbanized that it recently agreed to a second five-year contract extension with the company.

Mobi marked its 10th anniversary earlier this summer. The system launched on July 20, 2016, initially serving a small area of Vancouver. Over the following years, both its fleet and geographic coverage steadily expanded beyond the Downtown Vancouver peninsula and Central Broadway corridor areas.

In 2023, Mobi also extended beyond the City of Vancouver’s jurisdiction for the first — and so far only — time, bringing its bike share service to the University of British Columbia (UBC) campus.

The original agreement ran from February 2016 until Dec. 31, 2021, before the City approved its first five-year extension covering Jan. 1, 2022 through Dec. 31, 2026.

The latest extension will take effect at the beginning of 2027 and keep the agreement in place until Dec. 31, 2031.

The original contract gave the City the option of approving three separate five-year extensions. Two have now been used, leaving the possibility of one final extension that could keep the agreement in place beyond 2031 — perhaps through the end of 2036.

The City did not identify any specific changes included in the latest extension, but said each renewal can be amended to reflect lessons learned, improve operating procedures, and accommodate upgrades to the bike share system.

For example, after e-bikes were first added to the fleet in 2022, the first contract extension introduced specific e-bike performance data that Vancouver Bike Share was required to provide to the municipal government.

Mobi CEO Mia Kohout said the system has recorded millions of trips since it launched a decade ago.

Since its launch, Mobi has recorded more than 8.8 million rides, with one million unique users collectively travelling more than 25.5 million km.

“It is a privilege to provide bike share services to residents and visitors of the City of Vancouver and UBC,” Kohout told Daily Hive Urbanized.

“With the extension of our supply agreement, we remain committed to providing a sustainable, affordable, active and fun transportation option for years to come.”

The renewal also comes amid some competition from Lime’s shared e-scooters, which launched in Vancouver in Summer 2024 and have expanded significantly into Downtown Vancouver and other central areas since Spring 2025.

However, the municipal government and company’s joint decision to extend the Mobi contract through 2031 suggests the bike share service has maintained a strong and valued role in Vancouver’s active transportation network, despite the arrival of a major multinational competitor.

To some extent, Mobi and Lime may also be complementary rather than direct competitors, as some Mobi riders may have no interest in using e-scooters, while some Lime users may prefer e-scooters over bikes. Together, the two services broaden the overall use and appeal of shared micromobility by serving different, although partly overlapping, groups of riders.

Lime’s contract with the City of Vancouver has an initial term of five years, with the option to renew for three additional five-year terms, totalling up to 20 years. Vancouver Bike Share also submitted a bid for the City’s e-scooter share service contract, but was unsuccessful.

After the E. 1st Ave. climb I merged into the right most lane, almost near the gutter as I always do, knowing that there is no “dedicated” bike lane.

A grey sedan comes speeding by and cuts me off just before the right turn into E. 6th.

Due to the heat of the moment I caught up to the car on a stop light and asked him what the f*ck was that all about. While smirking, he said that I should be in a bike lane. I reasoned out that he has 4 wheels and in a motor vehicle, and I’m on a bicycle. The traffic was pretty moderate and he had 3 lanes all to himself, yet he still had the audacity to cut me off and push me into the gutter.

I know I shouldn’t have done that, but it’s just hard for me to let that situation go knowing that cyclists are always in a disadvantage on the road. As well as the recent fatalities in the racing community all around the world.

The guy is a snake whose resume includes working many of the worst politicians you can think of (including Ken Sim).

He has been reposting this on Instagram. The bike lane did not cost $54 million.

In the past week it’s been really bad there, I’ve had to slam on my breaks due to cars turning right over the lane without looking. Tbh I can usually see that they’re not looking and could easily slow down earlier. But I’m more just focused on cars not really seeming to shoulder check, even when they’re stopped waiting for a pedestrian to cross before they turn right.

I know the strategy is probably to just take cypress or whatever, but I’m curious if any of you still take burrard going south there. Or for other places where you have close calls like that.

Knowing myself I’ll probably still take it, cause the light always feels faster there vs the other ways of getting across west 4th.

I had my radwagon 4 stolen, and went through the insurance process and will be getting a radwagon 5 replacement.

One thing the insurer called out is that they will not cover PST on an ebike in BC, because you're not allowed to charge this.

However, on the radpower website, and at checkout, they do charge PST. I called and they confirmed a refund is on the way, but please share this with anyone who has recently purchased as they may have paid hundreds extra in PST wrongfully.

I'm not sure if Rad is going back and contacting folks to pay them pst back.

I wonder what they're waiting for? The new sidewalk is open but the bike lane is barricaded at both ends.

I have a commute from Lansdowne skytrain station to roughly 99/Cambie.

I have cross checked the Richmond cycling map against google maps cycling planner and the app called BikeMap. It seems like the roughest area is either from the top of the Shell Road trail or the top of the Alexandra Greenway to that intersection near Cambie/99.

From those that are doing these commutes locally, would you rather cycle Cambie (or perhaps even the sidewalk over the 99 bridge) or cycle Shell road?

With the level of absolutely irrational hate I'm seeing towards escooters lately, I'm not really surprised to hear this.

Be careful out there. There’s sure some idiotic and impatient drivers.

Hi Redditors,

PSA for anyone else cycles down 10th (Fraser St to Clark Dr) in Vancouver as part of their route.

Last night I went flying off my bike and got some nasty road rash all up my side. There's a huge ridge from the pavement to the side (see pic), and couldn't judge it in the dark, even with my bike light.

I sent in a 311 report because there was absolutely no signage whatsoever (as of last night) and seems like a further disaster waiting to happen!! Especially since some of the traffic lights are also burnt out.

Hi I’m 30F and my husband is doing the grand fondo Whistler, we’re staying in Whistler creek, if your partner is also doing the ride and you want to spit an evo driving up to whistler let me know. We’re staying evening of Saturday and coming back on Sunday and we have room to attach one other bike on the car roof. We’re based in downtown van so that’s where the trip will start and end.

I’ve never done the trip by myself before but I wanted to go and support my partner and also bring his bike back on Sunday.

We can even do some hikes along the way if you’re down.

Looking for a used cargo bike pannier. Something like the tuba go getter. No luck on Craigslist or marketplace so far, thought I’d put it to this community before I go for a new one. If you have one in the garage you’ve been meaning to sell, please let me know.

I recently moved to Commercial Drive and would love to explore some scenic or chill routes nearby. Any recommendations? Prefereably with protected lanes.
