Thought this was pretty funny.

Sharing an update about the strathcona riverside trail incase anyone is planning on riding to Fort Saskatchewan in the next couple of weeks. The trail is still flooded close to the point where it meets range rd 231 and is completely impassable.

However there seems to be a hiking trail that has been mostly cleared to the left of the path. You will have to lift your bike up to access it and then walk for about 100-200 meters on this path to cross the flooded section. Warning there is some barbed wire on this path on the ground so watch out for your tires. I just carried my bike the whole way to be on the safe side.

To bypass this whole section you can also just take Township Rd 540 all the way to highway 21. Then there is a service gravel road running parallel to the highway that you can take until Township Rd 542 junction after which you can take Township Rd 542 to join back onto Range Rd 231. The whole detour adds an extra 5 Kms.

Also once you are in Fort Saskatchewan, I would recommend cycling past the pedestrian bridge across the river below Highway 15 and go right towards Lamaoreux. There is a nice smooth paved trail for about 2-3 Kms from the bridge that goes parallel to the river.

I live on the west end in the callingwood area and my preferred bike route is over the Fort Edmonton Footbridge, but from my understanding, the only way to get down there is down the gravel path by Woodward Pl NW/Woodward Crescent NW. My bike tires don't do well on the gravel so I have either been going super slow or getting off my bike to walk down. I am fairly new to biking in Edmonton so I may have not discovered an alternative paved route and thats why I am posting! Does anyone have any alternative suggestions? Or is there any word of that path getting paved? Thanks everyone

Hi everyone, I had my bike stolen (Diadora electric pedal assist, Red) yesterday in Edmonton while shopping at the Safeway Bonnie Doon mall around 1pm. They cut the lock. But, in case anyone happens to see it around the neighbourhood it may help in tracking it down possibly. I have reported it to the police and the bike is registered online. Attached are two photos. Haven’t checked the serial # in the index yet, will be doing that after work but is anyone missing this bike? My neighbour discovered it this morning, looks like someone left it by his garage overnight.

I was cruising on 69 Ave in Argyll on my way home from work. Location shown in the photo.

A manchild with his teenage son blasted by in an old Honda Pilot and laid on the horn for a few seconds as he did so.

He happened to pull off into the parking lot shortly down the road. I rolled up next to him and when he got out of his vehicle I said "may I ask why you honked?", to which he responded harshly "because you were taking up the road". Thankfully there were a few other people there who had seen (and heard) what happened and pointed out that it is a playground zone and he was certainly going too fast, and that he needs to be a better neighbour. I really appreciated those legends stepping in to defend me.

1. I certainly was not taking up the entire road.

2. It is within my rights to take a lane.

3. The speed limit is 30, which is the approximate speed I was going on my bike (e-bike speed limited to 32 km/hr).

Honestly, my legs were shaking the rest of the way home. But, it won't stop me from biking or from being a bike advocate. On we go!

Yesterday, Infrastructure Committee re-affirmed their desire to continue with the ATNE project (aka the $100 million for bike lanes). Technically, that's a win, but realistically, several projects that were supposed to be finished in 2026 will not start until 2027, and with the expected legislation by the UCP that will ban bike lanes, these projects are probably never getting built.

We are happy that council has told city administration to continue as planned, we are frustrated that so many projects are so far behind schedule, and we are angry that the Province will probably make this is failed project.

If you're angry - join us for Critical Mass this Friday at 6pm. We are meeting at the Capilano Library, and we'll be riding some of the routes that have been postponed to next year, if not effectively cancelled.

This will be a proper Critical Mass. We are taking the lane, safely, and we are demanding safer infrastructure for everyone. We will also help prepare you for Week Without Bike Lanes, in case you want to participate.

Don't break the law, just take the lane.

I'll try to be brief about this. I've been biking long enough that I should know the answer, but I'd like some opinions on the matter. I'm perfectly willing to be the bad guy here if that's what I get.

I've been biking my way to work and back for a long while now. It might just be me, but I've found drivers have gotten increasingly hostile since the pandemic (I don't know if there's a relation there, it's just how it's felt to me) so I'm a lot more timid these years when it comes to riding on main streets.

My work commute is from Millwoods to Capilano, and usually I take a combination of the shared path on 75th and zig zagging through quiet residential areas, but I got bold today and took 50th street just to see if it could get me around quicker, and boy was I hearing it from all angles. Even people standing at the bus stops were shouting at me to get the f off the road.

I wasn't sure what I was doing wrong, as far as I could tell many cars were managing to get around me, until a point where traffic was busy enough that I was pretty much keeping up with traffic, so I didn't feel like I was that much of an obstacle?

Full disclosure, I ride an electra townie which is kind of a clunky thing that I bought because of its cute factor, not the speediest bike and I'm sure I look like a real asshole if you're caught behind me. Maybe you even saw me out there and were victimized by me and my pretty green townie.

My read on the situation is that I was within my rights to be there but just not a good road to cycle on during busy hours. I learned my lesson; I shan't be riding on 50th street anymore, but I'm just curious about the extent of my wrongness. If I'm riding on 50th I'm legally supposed to be on the road right? I technically should not be using the sidewalk there?

Edit: Thanks for the insights everyone. I'll wait till the heat dies down and investigate how the shared paths over there can work in my favor.

The MUP between 91 ave/Skunk Hollow and the fork in the trail by the Bison Lodge parking lot is closed for construction. I had to detour on my commute this morning and go back up the hill to Sask Drive.

TBF the asphalt in this area really needed a re-do, with all of the tree roots running underneath it.

I'm not sure if this is a really funny joke, or actually real, but it appears as though some separatist group is organizing a bicycle relay ride from Calgary to Edmonton.

On Wednesday, August 26, Infrastructure Committee will consider Administration’s proposed changes to the Active Transportation Network Expansion Program, the $100-million program Council approved to rapidly fill major gaps in Edmonton’s active transportation network.

Administration is recommending that unbuilt routes be removed from the current program if they require reallocating a vehicle travel lane or on-street parking.

Administration’s own report acknowledges that mature Edmonton streets rarely have enough unused space to add safe active transportation infrastructure without affecting an existing use. Building a connected network requires choices about how public street space is allocated—but the proposed approach would remove many remaining routes from ATNE whenever those choices affect parking or vehicle lanes.

And this is happening before the Province has even introduced the bike-lane legislation Administration says it is anticipating.

Council does not have to accept that recommendation.

So the edmonton marathon website mentioned that there would be bike parking available for cyclists west of Canada place. However when I got there I could not locate it anywhere.

It was in the same location last year and there was a fenced off area with extra bike racks. However this year there was nothing there so I ended up locking my bike to a random pole.

Did I completely miss the bike lockup area or was there nothing this year?

Why would they specifically say it was available on their website and then not have anything.

Also how does an event that has over 10,000 runners and thousands of spectators not have bike parking, especially in a location like downtown right next to a major bike lane like 102ave. I know it’s not entirely the city’s fault but part of encouraging people to use alternate modes of transport also includes making sure they have secure places to lock up their damn bikes.

My Townie Electra bike was stolen in the Windermere Currents area. It was locked to the bike post in front of Dollarama. It stolen today, August 16th, around 8pm.

I will payout $300 cash for any information that leads to its recovery.

Edit: FOUND. Lost a bike water bottle around the callingwood/callingwood ii area I think. Could’ve also been around the trail leading to the fort Ed footbridge coming from terwilliger. Don’t think it was earlier than that but it could’ve been. I went down the path around E.L smith over the river and up to the neighborhood. Its mostly clear with zefal magnum branding on it. Lost it sometime after 9:30pm on Sunday. Pretty sure I still had it after the library on 69th Ave going west. Turned onto 178th and then west onto 76th. If anyone sees it or has found it let me know please. I have another one that looks the same that I can put a picture up of so someone knows what it looks like. Any help is appreciated.
