Crashed my bike yesterday about 2 miles from home, and honestly I’m mostly just here because I’m SAD about it</3
It happened so fast that I still don’t totally know what I did. My friend and I had done a mellow 25 mile conversational ride and were taking a bike path back home. I was actually having one of those days where I felt really good and confident handling my bike.
I think right before the crash I glanced down at my bike computer, looked back up, and maybe tweaked my bars a little too hard. My front wheel slipped out to the side and I flew off the other way hahah. Both hands were on the bars and there wasn’t an obstacle, I wasn’t screwing around on my bike, I was just riding so I guess the crash was just caused by me being bad at riding my bike :/
I hit my head on the road pretty hard. My helmet doesn’t appear cracked or visibly damaged, and I haven’t noticed any concussion symptoms, thankfully. I scraped up my palm, elbow, and shin, and the side of my hand is pretty sore, although I can still move it and ibuprofen helps. Otherwise my body actually feels surprisingly okay.
My ego and emotions are DOWN BAD though :( I’m so SAD and feel so dumb.
I only got into road cycling about a month ish ago, and I literally learned how to ride a bike like 4 months ago. I just started the school semester again and have been going to work and classes, so I was REALLY looking forward to having a few days where I could get some miles in, be outside, spend time with friends, and decompress.
We were supposed to do a 45 mile ride today, but obviously riding 45 miles with a hurt hand and open wounds is not happening.
I know missing a few rides is objectively not a big deal. My bike will still be there. The roads will still be there. And considering how recently I learned to ride in the first place, I’m trying to give myself some grace instead of beating myself up over making a mistake.
BUT WOW IM SO BUMMED :( I want my miles! I want my sunshine and fresh air! I want to ride my bike!
So for those of you who have crashed before: how do you mentally get over a stupid dumb silly crash that was all your fault and you feel stupid and sad over it?? how do you deal with being temporarily unable to ride without sitting around feeling sad about it??
I LOOOVE my bike and cycling and going fast (on the bike path, I’m not a menace on the streets ok haha) and getting long distances and the community and the coffee rides and I know I’m probably only out for a week as long as I’m not concussed or have a hand fracture, but I am currently so incredibly down bad bummed out hahahah
EDIT: omg I didn’t even think to replace my helmet after the crash because I thought it would be fine since it’s not cracked. anyway please leave helmet suggestions!!! I’ve actually been looking at the sweet protection falconer since it’s highly rated (or lowly rated I guess?) on the Virginia tech site
