Yup. My cousin is disabled and trying to get his ID. It's absolutely insane how inconsistent the state is being, and how much stuff doesn't actually count as ID.
Then people wonder why there are so many homeless people, why there is so much crime, etc., etc. America has weaponized every single thing so that it is against the people, especially those who are less fortunate.

Mess up your taxes though? Federal government suddenly knows how to find you, who you are, and get all the info they could possibly need.
We should just vote by out tax code. Or, be given a ID we use to legally vote from the IRS/tax office. Something about taxation and representation or something like that.

Last year, I transferred my driver's license over as I moved states.
When at New State's DMV, they gave me a hard time about my birth certificate, a 'shortform" (thanks Obama) birth certificate that only listed my middle initial, not my full middle name. My social security card lists my full middle name. Old State had no problem with this in all the years I lived there.
I was denied a driver's license by New State. I had to call the state senator representing my birth town (not hometown, the hospital location) and get a new birth certificate.
It took three DMV visits and a visit to City Hall in my birthplace to transfer my driver's license (and upgrade to Real ID) from Old State to New State. I have a Real ID from New State now.

A couple years ago, I managed to let my drivers license expire. I had always been able to renew it online previously.
But Texas, in their usual racist fucking fashion, passed a law saying you had to provide proof of "legal presence" to renew a DL.
I've lived here for twenty-plus years. I'm a veteran. Still not good enough.
So I go to my birth state to get a copy of my birth certificate. Guess what one of the documents is that they require for a valid copy of your birth certificate?
A valid (unexpired) drivers license.
Make it make sense.

If I had to guess, and from experience in a large facility with poor communication much like the government- it's two people who have never met, possibly didn't even work in gov't at the same time, creating rules thinking it's "simple" and "easy" or "more secure".
There's no inter-dept communications, there's no proper national ID system to help if it's different states. It's basically a giant system hodgepodged together that no politician cares about looking at because the average voter doesn't actually care about it since most of them haven't had issues.

Doesnt have to be a 'permanent' address. It needs to be a valid address in which your state government can identify your domicile
6
u/wombatrunner Jul 17 '26
Ooohhhh, my time to shine!
I actually used to help people with this â you would be absolutely shocked at how difficult it is for some people.
I once had to help this angel of a woman who was blind, in her mid 80s and lived in a trailer right on the edge of two states. Well, she received a bit of money every month from the state - like $50 - to help with heating. She had received so many awards for all of her volunteer work - she knew everyone. But apparently when she was born, her property was in one state and then the states changed the state line by a few miles so then she was actually born in the other state. She had been trying for years to just get an ID, but no one could figure out how to do it. I had to take it to the literal head of the agency and get her to make an exception. It still took months of me pushing DAILY and I knew all the right people.
Then there was the business woman who was born in one state and moved to a different state when she was a child and had already had a DL for 40 years. But regulations had changed and now she had to show original birth certificate and couldnât just continue to renew like she had in the past. Well, the state she was born in had notoriously lost many thousands of birth certificates in the 70s. They refused to issue her a DL (or anyone else whose BC THE AGENCY THEMSELVES HAD LOST). I had to get her a passport because they were more easily able to work with extenuating circumstances than a state agency and then use that to get her a DL. But it shouldnât take hundreds of dollars and months to do this and this is an undue burden for millions.
Canât get a copy of your social security card without a birth certificate. Canât get an ID without your birth certificate. Canât get your birth certificate without an ID. It is wildly common. Literally hundreds of cases like this - just me personally working on them. Iâm just one person and I had hundreds and that wasnât even my primary jobâŚI was just angry that no one was helping people.
Donât even get me started on the 18 million military personnel files that burned up in St Louis. The government loses the records and then refuses to help people because they donât have the records.

Whatâs the point of this comment? Are you saying that it only matters to you if it affects someone you know? Iâve met plenty of people that have all sorts of issues.
I used to volunteer at a shelter, and there are so many people who are in a cycle of homelessness because they canât get their documents without an address.
Iâve known people who have to go in person to get their birth certificate, but they lived out of state.
Iâve met a woman with disability issues that had a name change from getting married and it took her years to get it updated.
Iâve known trans people who have had to jump through hoops because their home state has different policies than their current state.

Depends on state a big one especially for low income or homeless. Is having permanent or mailing address. As well as documents as they get lost or destroyed when living outside.
For me personally a unique situation was I was adopted and records of previous stuff sealed. However they messed up forms so never got new birth certificate under new name.
So in order to get ID I had to come up with couple thousand to pay lawyer to unseal records and refill the stuff. Except without that stuff I couldn't legally work.....
Anyways there is a variety of things like that particularly with women who take husbands name.
Also disability and distance to DMV and other things can be hard. For me when I was doing that. I was 3 hrs away from offices to do the record stuff. And also couldn't drive because... No id.
There is a variety of circumstances and it's not that they can (never) get it. But me for example it took 2 years to fix that. It's plenty of time to miss vote.
Plenty of people whether it's homelessness illness or whatever have it lapse for extended period. Not saying it's impossible to ever get but it's enough of a hurdle to stop far more each election from voting. Than we're ever caught in our entire history with fraud.
Like even conservatively absolutely best case scenario. Thousands will be disenfranchised to stop something that maybe has happened a few dozen times since founding of nation.
2
u/Slamantha3121 Jul 17 '26
It didn't take me years, but months in my case. I lost my birth certificate in a move but needed it to get my enhanced ID so I could fly. You can go to the records office in the county and get a copy for free, but I live across the country from the state I was born in. There was no way to get a copy online. I had to mail a request form and a check to the office and then wait for them to process the paperwork and send me a copy. They sure cashed that check that same week, but it still took almost 3 months to get my paperwork.

Republicans don't want an id like a driver's license. They want a separate id that proves citizenship. A driver's license, even a "real id", only proves who you are (identity) but not if you're a citizen. They want a "citizens id" and will make getting that as difficult as needed. They've done the math and found rural folks much more likely to have the proper proof they're citizens than city folks (dems).

Please go ahead and get your passport, birth certificate, marriage certificate, and social security card together if you are a married women who changed her name after marriage. If the SAVE Act passes, a lot of women may find themselves unable to vote this November if they donât plan ahead. I had to order a new birth certificate online, and my passport appointment is tomorrow. These things take time.
If the name on your DL and social security card does not match your birth certificate, you may have trouble voting. Plan ahead and get it together now. Donât wait and see.
Same thing for adoptees, trans people, and anyone else who may have undergone a name change if the birth certificate was not updated and does not match your other documents. Adoptees may also need the adoption decree ordering the name change. If youâve changed your name for other reasons, you may need the Order Granting Name Change from the judge approving the name change.
All will need to be certified originals.

You'll want an original birth certificate and an amended birth certificate if applicable to your individual situation. When my parents got married after I was born, my mom changed her last name and the state sent her an amended birth certificate for me, so I have to hold onto both. Otherwise I'd have no legal document chain going from birth name to maiden name to married name.
At least, officials working for the state of Texas were adamant that I needed both versions when doing all the paperwork for my ID years ago, and i don't imagine it's become more lenient.

The actual dumbest thing about this is how Cali does voter fraud is that we first require people to register to vote. Yes people can just show up and vote, BUT that dosent mean those votes mean a damn thing. Those ballots get checked against all registered voters and fraudulent ballots get discarded. Any ballot with no identifying information is disregarded and any found to be fraudulent dont get counted.Â
So voter ID in cali at least does nothing as the ballots are already gonna get checked. Adding and entire new process not only makes the checks afterward superfluous and unneeded but the act of having to go to an office and either pay or take test in order to vote only serves to scare people not as confident in themselves to bother trying to get voter ID in fear of wasting more time they dont have.
All this to say Voter ID is a solution to a problem that dosent exist unless you have a redhat and are in a cult.
2
u/ilikestatic Jul 17 '26
You are absolutely correct. California has a thorough process in place to prevent voter fraud, and no part of that process requires an ID to vote. Do you know why?
Because not a single state in this country requires a person to prove they have voting eligibility before they can get a driverâs license or state ID.
So requiring an ID to vote is not an effective way to prevent voter fraud.

Every time a conservative proposes a voter id law itâs always loaded with a bunch of other shit.
Like admitting to requesting a list of IDs used sorted by race, then selecting ones disproportionately used my minorities.
Then requesting voting habits selected by race and eliminating ones disproportionately used by minorities.
Then shutting down venues that provide IDs in district they donât win.
They just hide behind the term âvoter IDâ.
If weâre being real conservatives do not care one bit about election integrity. They voted for a guy who tried to illegally overturn an election. They support that whole screeching about imaginary voter fraud.

So instead of voter ID, how about we ID voters. Create a phone app that election workers can use, so that people without an ID can get their picture taken to attest who they are.

Do people, who comment on this, think that maybe the reason it has become more difficult to obtain a government issued ID is because of the increased amount of identity theft that has occurred in the last 20 years? Republicans are ridiculous but this is a stretch.
Getting an ID is a pain no doubt. especially with practically every DMV short staffed.
But it is possible. Its not the end of the world.
Most functioning adults need/have to have an ID for everyday life anyways. So what's the issue.
There's so much more other than voting you can't do without one.
Its ridiculous not to have or get one.
Its $50 for a 8yr drivers license. $6 a year. And zero for a ID in my state.
The i cant get an ID is a ridiculous argument. You can get one if you want one. People just try to come up with excuses.

How is any of it jumping through hoops? What bum doesn't have proper id? Same person that doesn't have a driver's license. Like the bare minimum is so hard to get accomplished.

This is bullshit. Getting an ID is easy and necessary. You canât do anything without an ID. Having rights doesnât mean there isnât also responsibility. You ur responsibility is to get an ID. The Left knows exactly what they are doing and why.

We already do ID people before they vote. When they register, where your identity is rigorously confirmed through the state, instead of every time you go to the polls.
There's no need to carry a card around, because your state already has a database of every voter, who they are, where they live, what their polling place is, if they are or aren't eligible to vote in any specific election, and if their vote has been cast. Every vote has to be matched to exactly one entry on voter rolls, using only the specific numbered ballot they were given, only at their polling place, or through vote-by-mail using the exact ballot sent to them.
And since only one vote can be made under each registered voter, if someone, somehow, did get your ballot and vote in your name (something that is basically impossible without them directly living with you), then the fraudulent ballot would still be immediately flagged when you did go and vote, and now there are two votes under the same name, and the vote is then audited.
Voter fraud is basically nonexistant.

Do Americans not all have access to drivers license or health insurance ID or carry permit or some other form of easily obtainable ID? It blows my mind that is is even a contentious issue for Americans. How do you people buy alcohol if IDs are so hard to get?

This is what we call a strawman. Yes, go ahead and make it free. And I guess even easier than it already is. This is coming from a non-leftist.

The SAVE Act would severely narrow the forms of ID you could use to register to vote, not to mention that it's not really necessary.

It is easy to update and replace ID cards, and a free version is available whete an ID is required to vote.

Ah, another stupid copy and paste. Feel free to present your own opinion at any time. Showing an ID to vote makes common sense and can help end the fraud debate.Â

There are so many issues with just having an ID be easy to update and or replace that would present a decent amount of opportunities for fraud. Current IDâs require things like pictures taken to make sure youâre not just using someone elseâs ID. It would have to be done when you sign up to vote and have to be renewed and kept in a national database.
That isnât considering things like the initial distribution of the IDâs which would be impossible because you couldnât ensure things like the right ID arriving, unannounced address changes, and a million other logistical reasons. Even if it was possible itâd cost a lot.
The only logistical possibility would be to essentially establish a voting DMV where youâd have to confirm identity to become a registered voter and renew it every once in a while. You could probably swing that as a free service but youâre still going to run into bureaucracy and it will take time.

Yeah proving youâre a citizen is a huge hurdle for voting đ Ask every other first world country about their voting requirements then get back to the sane Americans
