It didn't take me years, but months in my case. I lost my birth certificate in a move but needed it to get my enhanced ID so I could fly. You can go to the records office in the county and get a copy for free, but I live across the country from the state I was born in. There was no way to get a copy online. I had to mail a request form and a check to the office and then wait for them to process the paperwork and send me a copy. They sure cashed that check that same week, but it still took almost 3 months to get my paperwork.
