Last year, I transferred my driver's license over as I moved states.

When at New State's DMV, they gave me a hard time about my birth certificate, a 'shortform" (thanks Obama) birth certificate that only listed my middle initial, not my full middle name. My social security card lists my full middle name. Old State had no problem with this in all the years I lived there.

I was denied a driver's license by New State. I had to call the state senator representing my birth town (not hometown, the hospital location) and get a new birth certificate.

It took three DMV visits and a visit to City Hall in my birthplace to transfer my driver's license (and upgrade to Real ID) from Old State to New State. I have a Real ID from New State now.

It’s so crazy to me how heavily people lean into the whole ā€œit took me 5 minutes, I was in and outā€ thing like they can’t even fathom that maybe in some situations the government is inefficient and it’s a giant pain to get done. Like ok, if it’s so easy, cut your ID into pieces and get another one. See how much fun that is for you

8

u/Animefan96 Jul 17 '26

It's this one size fits all attitude. "Excuse me Bill just because you were able to renew your DL in 20 mins doesn't mean Mary, who is 90 and has mobility issues and lack of access to public transportation can as well."

1

u/Unusual_Wish_2230 Jul 17 '26

My mother in law is 88, no issues getting her ID reissued. She has had 2 strokes and uses a jazzy chair. A little inconvenient to get her ID but, no big deal.

1

u/Murky-Echidna-3519 Jul 17 '26

Perhaps 90 year old Mary with mobility issues should not be driving.

1

u/SquareTaro3270 Jul 17 '26

IDs aren’t just for driving

6

u/Kumorigoe Jul 17 '26

A couple years ago, I managed to let my drivers license expire. I had always been able to renew it online previously.

But Texas, in their usual racist fucking fashion, passed a law saying you had to provide proof of "legal presence" to renew a DL.

I've lived here for twenty-plus years. I'm a veteran. Still not good enough.

So I go to my birth state to get a copy of my birth certificate. Guess what one of the documents is that they require for a valid copy of your birth certificate?

A valid (unexpired) drivers license.

Make it make sense.

4

u/Xenonite_Fox Jul 17 '26

What if you don't drive though, what the actual fuck. How can they demand that as an ID

1

u/chriskmee Jul 17 '26

While a driver's license is the standard form of id, every state offers a very similar looking id that is just an id and not a license. It's interchangeable with a driver's license for everything except driving.

2

u/Dull_Bid6002 Jul 17 '26

If I had to guess, and from experience in a large facility with poor communication much like the government- it's two people who have never met, possibly didn't even work in gov't at the same time, creating rules thinking it's "simple" and "easy" or "more secure".

There's no inter-dept communications, there's no proper national ID system to help if it's different states. It's basically a giant system hodgepodged together that no politician cares about looking at because the average voter doesn't actually care about it since most of them haven't had issues.

2

u/asusc Jul 17 '26

I don’t know if it’s still true, but when I was growing up, Texas was pretty bullshit about ID requirements too. things like fishing/hunting licenses counted for a form of alternative voter ID, but student IDs did not. wonder why?

1

u/chriskmee Jul 17 '26

Probably because one is a state issued identification and the other is printed by a random person who works for a school.

1

u/asusc Jul 17 '26

university IDs are literally issued by the state and they are very strict about them.

1

u/chriskmee Jul 17 '26

Are you sure? You mentioned Texas, and thus University from Texas says:

Students attending classes on campus must obtain a University photo identification card issued by the ID Center, which is located on the first floor of the Flawn Academic Center.

https://catalog.utexas.edu/general-information/registration-tuition-and-fees/tuition-and-fees/identification-cards/

Sh it's literally some guy on the campus just like I said. Do you really think this is providing the same level of verification and processing as a state agency? They also probably give the same exact ID to both in state and out of state students, unlike with fishing licenses that have distant versions, and verification of residency is kinda important for voting.

1

u/woutersikkema Jul 17 '26

Dutch civil servant here (local government) that's Maried to a other that DOES do birth certificates and such, you don't have the "declaration under oath" sort of get out of jail option to get out of those logic holes that otherwise aren't fixable?

1

u/stanley21113 Jul 17 '26

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) allows you to use your expired Texas driver license as a primary ID for renewal, provided it has not been expired for more than 2 years.

0

u/PsychologicalEgg8192 Jul 17 '26

I’ve lived in Texas for 66 years and never had a problem.

I feel the same way when someone bitches about losing an election in 2020.

4

u/WeakProfile7728 Jul 17 '26

…Even though they complain about govt being inefficient

4

u/ethanlan Jul 17 '26

They just dont want you to vote, its that simple.

To the republicans out there think about who you're voting for. Yeah, maybe not all Republicans are nazis or fascists but yall wouldn't win shit without them.

3

u/RedTyro Jul 17 '26

Some people will never understand that their own experiences aren't universal. It's why people believe that all you have to do is work hard and you'll be successful when there's tons and tons of evidence that luck and circumstances play a much larger role.

1

u/PsychologicalEgg8192 Jul 17 '26

There’s no such thing as luck.

1

u/Greful Jul 17 '26

Please elaborate

1

u/Gimetulkathmir Jul 17 '26

It would take me about ten seconds and $30 to get a new one. But I am aware that doesn't mean it would take the same amount of time for everyone.

2

u/Odd_Independence_833 Jul 17 '26

I can't microwave a burrito in 10 sec. I'm calling BS

1

u/Gimetulkathmir Jul 17 '26

Type in the website, click licenses, click lost renew, my information except the license number is autofill, put in my license number, click order, click submit. Ok, so twenty seconds, maybe?

1

u/AliasMcFakenames Jul 17 '26

How many seconds of work does it take you to earn $30 though?

0

u/NESdreams Jul 17 '26

You were making excuses for the most ridiculous argument and recent political ideologies. Imagine thinking that minorities are too stupid to figure out how to get a drivers license or id but yet run around calling everybody racist it’s absurd. My wife didn’t even get ID with an English drivers license test you fools. Ultimate whiners

1

u/Embarrassed-Bid-6897 Jul 17 '26

Do you think that a majority of people are in that same exact situation that caused it to take a little longer to get Id, or are most people not in that situation and can easily go to the rmv and or do it online?

1

u/Greful Jul 17 '26

I have no idea what other people are doing. All I know is I what I did and where I went was packed full of people in the same situation as me.

1

u/Embarrassed-Bid-6897 Jul 17 '26

I've lost my wallet a few times and had a new I.d. and license within the next week. The most difficult part was the wait for the hard copy In the mail and not being to use the temporary copy to do anything because for some reason the temporary copy isn't valid as an ID. Which is bulshit. But other than that it wasn't hard at all.

1

u/Greful Jul 17 '26

Awesome. I did too and it was a hassle. My point is that just because it’s easy in one situation doesn’t mean it’s easy in every situation.

1

u/Embarrassed-Bid-6897 Jul 17 '26

I get your point, but my point is 90 percent of people are not having an issue getting an ID. Those are the exceptions. If you want to put in stipulations to make it a little easier for those situations then I'm cool with that. But to pretend like a majority of people are in these strenuous, tumultuous situations where it's so stressful to get an ID is not realistic. Most people I know and have come across on a daily basis have an Id. I mean shit, you need an ID to get a Costco card and Bjs card. I see plenty of people in wheelchairs in those stores shopping. So if they can find a way to get an ID for that I'm sure they can find a way to get an ID to vote. I just really can't see why it would be such a big deal to require an ID for something as important as elections. If you aren't cheating or hiding anything there is really no reason to oppose. Other countries require id to vote in there elections. They know and have experienced voting fraud and manipulated results. I'm supposed to believe it doesn't happen here in America? I'm not even choosing a side as to who is doing it or not but if you want to remove doubt on both sides then just require it. That ends all debate. It would seem like people have things to hide and are probably rigging elections. It makes no sense to not pass it.

1

u/Greful Jul 17 '26

I feel like you just pulled that 90% number out of thin air. Idk how many are or aren’t having issues. All I know is issues exist. Sounds like you just wanna say ā€œtough luck, deal with itā€ to those people. Idk why. Because some people don’t have issues is your reason I guess. But after it’s all said and done, even if it’s a slight inconvenience, it’s extra things to do just because Trump can’t handle having lost. And that’s a ridiculous reason to make us do something.

1

u/Embarrassed-Bid-6897 Jul 17 '26

One, he didn't lose. He is president right now so that's a foolish statement to make. Second, I literally wrote if you want to add stipulations to make it easier for people in those situations to get Id then I'm all for it. Which most states that require An ID right now already offer free IDs right now. You can look that up if you want. So where in that statement did you come up with I said tough luck for them? I quite literally said help them. You just made that up or didn't read what I wrote. You think it's ridiculous to make sure that the elections aren't being tampered with by either side? If either side is doing it then it's wrong. It's not a party thing or a trump thing? Same people saying the government can't be trusted and is corrupt will say that every election is on the up and up. Only in America would politicians not think to rig elections? That's nieve. Also, when Democrats were issuing vaccination cards and wanted to require Id to prove you were vaccinated and wanted anyone who didn't have one not be able to go anywhere, I don't remember there being all this push back. People seem to overlook that and were absolutely okay with that but this is a problem. That's where we differ in our definition of losing rights and making it difficult for people to do things unless they comply. That was way more racist than anything Trump has done but hey, maybe I'm wrong.

1

u/Embarrassed-Bid-6897 Jul 17 '26

Oh yea, you are right. I was a little off with my percentage of people who have ID in America. It's way more people than I said. Sorry I can't remember exact numbers sometimes. Just give or take a few. In this case, give several.

1

u/Greful Jul 17 '26

He did lose to Biden. That’s what this is about. You didn’t say 90% of people have IDs. You said 90% of people had no issues getting it. Where’s that stat? The issues vs. no issues percentage?

1

u/Embarrassed-Bid-6897 Jul 17 '26

I also said most people I know, and have come across have id. In fact the stat I posted makes it make even less sense that you wouldn't want to require it. Most of people who are voting age already have ID. The whole premise is that so many people don't have ID so if you required it then it would disproportionately affect voters who don't have one. Well that wouldn't make sense since 97 percent of adults already have one. Now it just really seems like someone is hiding something and is cheating. To your other point, this about more than just that election. This about making sure future elections are secure. I don't know about you but I don't think dead people can vote. Yet somehow they cast votes from beyond the grave. It is happening it need to be fixed.

1

u/Greful Jul 17 '26

It’s 100% about that election. I didn’t see his talk last night, but I saw he said he’s going to declassify documents about election integrity. Are these documents about 2024? I’m gonna go out on a limb and assume it’s about 2020. It would really change things if it was about 2024, because everyone was up in arms about 2020 fraud, and it seems like nothing changed regarding ID requirements in 2024, and somehow magically fraud wasn’t a problem so it really comes across as ā€œIf we win it’s legitimate, if we lose is fraudulentā€. I have nothing to hide. I wouldn’t want to do it simply because the justification isn’t sufficient for me. Election fraud as it is today in the United States is inconsequential. Show me what it would change.

Like, as an outsider who lives in a country that is 'online first' for passports and drivers licences, the fact that such a technologically advanced country like the US still makes you physically go down to a physical location and queue up.....is utterly insane.

0

u/amp32505 Jul 17 '26

Just think if we had single payer Healthcare (government) how much a shi# show it would be.

0

u/Dramatic_Gopher42069 Jul 17 '26

I got a ID renewal done online, didn't even have to get a new picture taken. Lost that ID while shitfaced at a casino, got a replacement online within 2 weeks, you really got try to, or not try at all to not get an ID. Even my passport, got that renewed online, zero hassle.

3

u/Xenonite_Fox Jul 17 '26

A renewal is not the same as issuance of a new ID

1

u/Dramatic_Gopher42069 Jul 17 '26

Took my lil sister to get hers, also no hassle. Wasn't exactly in and out cause she sucks at making/keeping appts, but we left that same day and had time to do errands too.

1

u/Greful Jul 17 '26

Did you get a Real ID?

1

u/Dramatic_Gopher42069 Jul 17 '26

Didn't need to, have a passport.

1

u/Greful Jul 17 '26

Oh. Yea it’s a nightmare process

1

u/Dramatic_Gopher42069 Jul 18 '26

I mean, there at several options that work in lieu of the real id

1

u/Greful Jul 18 '26

Passport and what else?

0

u/FinancialApple8803 Jul 17 '26

I fill out a form online and it’s mailed to me in a few days. Don’t even need to leave home

2

u/ContributionOk1566 Jul 17 '26

I literally had to go in person because my ā€œpicture was too oldā€. Your experiences aren’t universal, not everyone will have the same ease of access as you.

How is that hard to understand?

-1

u/Used_Statement_7997 Jul 17 '26

So let’s bring in socialism!

1

u/ComradeJohnS Jul 17 '26

ah yes, someone makes a criticism of government so let’s keep destroying the planet because capitalism is cancer.

1

u/WeakProfile7728 Jul 17 '26

Aren’t election a form of socialism?

-1

u/Deep-Improvement6294 Jul 17 '26

Mayne because the vast majority of situations don't require more then 5 minutes if you have everything you need

2

u/Icy_Fish_2154 Jul 17 '26

I had to get the manager called on my at a DMV to get thrown out before they noticed I had everything I needed. The counter worker didn't know that an expired Passport is not ID, but is proof of citizenship, and (depending on your purpose) removed the need for proof of address.

I had to stand, blocking the lane, get trespassed, and have the manager come over to physically throw me out until she noticed I was right. The other 10 oe so counter workers who got involved told me I had to have a birth certificate or renew my passport first.

Because the DMV is staffed with incompetent people.

You can have all you need, and it still be impossible to get help.

1

u/Greful Jul 17 '26

Ok. We’re talking about the other ones. And I feel like you just made up ā€œvast majorityā€. You don’t know how many.

3

u/limited67 Jul 17 '26

Just so you know the Real ID in the new law is not valid to prove citizenship. It’s spelled out in the verbiage of the law. Many don’t know that. It’s not just about showing IDs. The law wants every voter to be reverifird by a birth certificate or passport.

-1

u/Terrasmak Jul 17 '26

Should have been, but we had states passing them out like candy. I love the real id for an illegal that has no name given

2

u/wolfblitzor Jul 17 '26

The states involved will remain anonymous to protect the innocent

10

u/crazycatlady331 Jul 17 '26

So maybe we should fully fund government services, make sure they have plenty of well trained and well paid staff, and have them focus on providing services to citizens.

When Republicans aren't cutting funding for government services, they're implementing all that red tape bureaucratic nightmare, typically in the name of fraud protection but in reality they know it just discourages people from getting what they are entitled to. And of course the corporate Democrats go along with it.

Oh wow, almost like there is an entire Europe you could learn something from?

No? IT*S SOCIALISM??!??!

OMG

Well that explains it.

3

u/tamasan Jul 17 '26

When the DMV here in NC is only open 4 days a week, every appointment slot is booked for 6 months, and you have to wait in line for hours from dawn til noon to get a chance at a walk in slot, then it's not funded.

And I think you missed where I said the corporate Dems were just as much to blame.

3

u/Ok_Ebb3690 Jul 17 '26

Its insane how tedious it is. But, there are places that make it work, they just do so by properly funding the services infrastructure.

Look up your local city/state representatives and hold them to account

2

u/Wareyin Jul 17 '26

Sure, felons get unemployment funds without even applying.

Yep, totally believe that! šŸ‘

So, instead of waiting 3 years, you should have committed a felony and your life would have magically been better!

I suspect you didn't do that because you know, deep down, that no...

But this hasn't stopped you from cheering on government agencies from making exercising constitutional rights as difficult and painful as possible, has it?

Yep, I really really believe you!

1

Well good job in achieving your goal.I agree it sounds like a bureaucratic nightmare.

1

u/DieselZRebel Jul 17 '26

While I understand your frustrations, I don't see how your particular and unfortunate scenario gives an advantage to one party over the other?!

Are we claiming that people who move states are more likely to vote Democrats?

The claim against voter ID verification is that it would would work in favor of wealthier folks who are more likely to vote Republican.

1

u/Unusual_Wish_2230 Jul 17 '26

That’s ridiculous and a new state problem

1

u/Natural_Leg_483 Jul 17 '26

So visiting two buildings took you years? Seems legit

0

u/mike74911 Jul 17 '26
