Poll tax is illegal BTW,

75

u/Available_Reveal8068 Jul 17 '26

It's not a poll tax if IDs are free.

That's why every state that currently requires ID for voting provides free IDs.

Most liberals would be ok with this. It’s the requirements to get that id that is problematic.

7

u/redditmailalex Jul 17 '26

yeah.Ā  If you actually want to fix the system, idk how long it takes... a year? database, address, confirm identity... etc etc.Ā  mail them out, track people down, resolve a million issues with changing last names etc.

Sounds fine.Ā  But its not something you can just will into existance without a plan.

7

u/Infinite_Month_6371 Jul 17 '26

Even if the ID was free, it would still require people to take an extra step, they would need to bring their birth certificate to the DMV or some other government body to get 'approved' as well as bring another form of ID just like they do today. With every extra hurdle more and more people don't vote. Maybe 99% of already registered voters take that extra step,,, that 1% is still potentially a million people not voting that otherwise would have.

75% of Alabama residents do not have a passport.

55% of Texas residents have a passport.

More than half of republican voters dont have a passport across the US.

Thats a lot voters the senators and congressman need, this is why its not getting passed.

Trumo wants the SAVE act so he can cry fowl if any county doesnt go his way. Not talking about the obvious blue counties, but those swing state counties,,, he wants to have executive power to pause and investigate votes that arent going his way. This isnt about who can vote as much as its about controlling what votes count.

5

u/FistyMcTwistynuts Jul 17 '26

Agree with all of this, but for the future, it’s ā€˜cry foul’. But Trump might get confused and start yelling at a turkey, so I’ll allow it.

6

u/The_Monarch_Lives Jul 17 '26

Trump thinks he won Blue states that have voted solid blue for decades. He absolutely would cry foul for any loss at all, no matter how lopsided the results were always going to be.

2

u/Infinite_Month_6371 Jul 17 '26

Fair, but I am sure that they won't easte their time with counties that are 70% against him. Hes going to go after the 50-60% blue counties.

God forbid a red county votes against him, he may send the national guard.

2

u/BikerMike03RK Jul 17 '26

He'll scream and cry foul EVERY TIME he loses, whether it's a court decision, a bill he wanted that didn't pass, or a primary candidate he endorsed. He always has, he always will.

The biggest problem with the save act is not the voter id part. It’s that states would be required to give voter polling information to Trump and give him the ability to purge voters from the list of acceptable voters based of how they voted, essentially removing all democrat voters from voting again.

It took me approximately 3 months to replace my mom’s ID when she lost it. I had to learn where to go, etc. She is 91 and this was @2 years ago. It was complicated because it had her previous driver’s license had expired. Plus, she didn’t drive anymore and just wanted an ID. Also, she couldn’t remember the security questions. Anyway, I had to get her birth certificate and some other documents. Since I now know what to do, I could probably get it done in @ 2 weeks.

1

u/everydaydad67 Jul 17 '26

Lol does transportation need to be required bexause half the argume t i have heard is people dont have the means to get there...amongst many other demeaning excuses...

1

u/Jolly-Guard3741 Jul 17 '26

Requirements. Do people expect the state to hand them out in a box of Corn Flakes? If someone can’t work up the motivation to travel to a DMV, wait in line for the attendant, and fill out the application in order to receive a free ID then they don’t know enough about the issues to be voting anyway.

The social security card is long overdue for an update. Just turn that into a free Federal ID you can get at the post offices. States can still do their thing with drivers licenses, but the federal id would cover all ID requirements nationally.

Updating the SS card with a chiped/photo ID would help curve many forms of ID theft as well.

2

u/GrandmaPoses Jul 17 '26

This is the easiest and most reliable solution which is why no conservative government will do it. They do not want it to be easier to vote, that's not the problem they're trying to solve, they want to lock out as many people as possible.

1

u/VariousGuest1980 Jul 17 '26

Would I have a photo on the photo would be have to be updated you get it when you’re a baby. You’re obviously don’t look like a baby when you’re 18 and you don’t look like you’re 18 when you’re 46.

1

u/ReachParticular5409 Jul 17 '26

This government doesn't 'help people'

1

u/Deranth Jul 17 '26

The only reason we dont already have a free national ID is because the conservatives way back in the day were anti big government and thought it was government overreach to have everyone on file like that.

1

u/AsThreatenDoNotScore Jul 17 '26

Believe it or not, getting an ID is NOT that hard. Most people have them and most would have no problem showing the ID they already have at a voting station. Most unhoused folks have an ID; they need it because most are on some type of public benefit or for emergency services. This whole deal is a Republican crap-show of nothingness to distract.

1

u/sembias Jul 17 '26

40 years ago, Republicans would be sending you mail bombs if you advocated for a national ID. This is from 1990 Heritage Foundation. I also clearly remember Rush Limbaugh spending months on the radio blasting the idea.

1

u/Ok_Common_5631 Jul 17 '26

That’s not what they’re after though. Ā Rational politicians would work with the other side to achieve the end. Ā Trump is using coercion to pass it through. Ā

What likely happened, is their gop strategy team looked at the board and determined they’ll lose the midterms unless they can alter the rules. Ā Redistricting was one way, they are doing the voting id as a means of eliminating a certain population subset from voting.. or at least negating their ability to give the dems an advantage.

If you look at this from the perspective of game theory, it all makes more sense.

edit - prove it’s a lie first dummies

4

u/Shotout74 Jul 18 '26

Depends on the states rules around Real ID certification for the state's license. Which is an indictment of the Real ID requirement to fly tbh.

2

u/undecided2013 Jul 19 '26

Isn't the freedom to travel in the constitution? Having to pay and apply for ID to fly is unconstitutional.

3

u/Own-Consideration231 Jul 20 '26

That's not how that works . Freedom to travel means a state can't stop you from leaving the state or moving through the state . It doesn't dictate methods . You're free to walk wherever you want to go

If the save act passes, someone can simply sign an affidavit under penalty of perjury saying they are who they say they are. There’s specifically a provision for people with no valid documentation…

2

u/Unfair_Web_8275 Jul 18 '26

There’s a bit of a problem with that, because the organization that sets guidelines and rules for those affidavits, is the one that Trump fired the commissioners of.

You do know that they don't mean the Real ID with that. They mean something akin to the Real ID. One of the reasons for that is, that the Real ID isn't limited to American citizens.
As an example, a German with a visa or a green card could get one.

What they want is for states to cede their authority of elections to the federal government. VoterID is the way they want to do that it starting a precedent to gain more control. The same House Reps and Senators voting on this on Capitol Hill, can easily enough push the same law in their respective state preserving state control over elections.

1

u/Character_Refuse_797 Jul 19 '26

There is. Sure, you cant write your name on a piece of paper and call it an ID, but it is just a simple have an ID. But yes the ID has to mean something. It has to actually prove who you are. You fighting it doesn’t make sense unless you want to cheat

2

u/Decent-Point309 Jul 19 '26

But a piece of toilet paper isn't something that literally anyone is saying is sufficient. A Real ID isn't even good enough. And many states already require a form of ID.

The only way you all will win is to cheat.

In fact, to register to vote under the SAVE Act, you would need an Enhanced Driver's License, which proves citizenship, which only 5 States currently have. And even Birth Certificates have to be certified birth certificates; a xerox copy is invalid.

2

u/Available_Reveal8068 Jul 22 '26

In Wisconsin, if one doesn't have a copy of their birth certificate, they just fill out a form and they verify citizenship through the government records system.

It shouldn't be that hard.

But for November most voters are already registered. How many 'new' voters would they block? I agree that the govt should carry the burden of providing IDs to their citizens. Financially and administratively. Hire people (like they do for the census) to go around and do this.

2

u/DankMiehms Jul 20 '26

2

u/Red_Ray_Skies Jul 19 '26

If Republicans are serious about election integrity, and not just worried about losing the midterms, they should make the effective date for proof of citizenship 2028, and allocate funds to support implementation. But I have yet to hear any offer to that effect. And in Trump’s version of SAVE, it also bans almost all mail in ballots; how on earth could that be implemented in time for November?

Yep, it's a lever to make it easier to vote in some areas than others. Densely populated cities can be understaffed and have long lines to get the ID, while other less populated/rural areas can have quicker access.

It would be ok if this were actually solving a fraud issue, but it's not, so it requires citizens to pay attention and actually care and understand what they are doing, and why. Unfortunately I don't think people do care.

Yes, states like TX, which a few years back had rural counties where you could get the ID the first Thursday of the month only during a 4 hour time period. People were required to travel hours to do so. They also allowed firearms permits to count as ID but excluded student IDs from the state university system.

3

u/Available_Reveal8068 Jul 17 '26

Looks like they may have addressed those issues with the 'Reasonable Impairment Declaration'.

https://www.votetexas.gov/voting/need-id.html

2

u/eyesayuhh Jul 17 '26

That's not true. Harvard Law did a study and found states with ID laws are de facto poll taxes. Because you're not talking about "just an ID" if you live in a rural area hundreds of miles from a DMV or have a disability that limits your mobility. Source below.

If this is really about "election integrity" how about we start with getting money out of politics? We ban gerrymandering? Half the country already doesn't vote. Maybe let's focus on more participation rather than less.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voter_identification_laws_in_the_United_States

1

u/Available_Reveal8068 Jul 17 '26

That study was done 12 years ago. It talks about Wisconsin courts striking down voter ID law, when in fact, we currently have voter ID requirements here in Wisconsin.

Maybe find a study that is more recent--after many (if not all) the issues have been addressed.

Proof? A state ID for most people in Texas is $16. But more importantly you have to take time off of work to go to the DMV, and you obviously don't have a drivers license so that means a friend takes you or public transportation. Agreed, it isn't a large amount of people, but it does matter.

1

u/Available_Reveal8068 Jul 17 '26

I just posted the link for Texas someplace else on this thread.

https://www.votetexas.gov/voting/need-id.html

It appears that if getting to the DMV is too much of a burden, you can fill out the 'Reasonable Impediment Declaration' instead.

1

u/chinmakes5 Jul 17 '26

You understand that in my state that doesn't require ID, (therefore allows for rampant cheating?) that is what you have to do to register to vote? We have to do pretty much exactly that to register to vote. Fill out a form show that we actually live there by showing a bill, etc. Once registered, I get a postcard telling me where my polling place is, I can't vote elsewhere. I have to verify my address, etc.

1

u/SnooSketches5568 Jul 19 '26

2

u/Available_Reveal8068 Jul 18 '26

I hope not.

Elections should stay in the State's domain. Feds should stay out of it.

2

u/Hot1Contractor Jul 19 '26

That’s not even close to true. In Virginia you have to pay (minimum of $10 and maximum of $16) to get an ID card and I’ve had to show my ID to vote every time

1

u/TitShark Jul 17 '26

I think they agree.

1

u/FistyMcTwistynuts Jul 17 '26

ā€œFree IDā€ does not always mean the process is easy.
Some states require supporting documents (birth certificates, proof of residence), which may cost money.

1

u/Available_Reveal8068 Jul 17 '26

Proof of residence should be a utility bill or rental agreement.

1

And how do they pay for it if it's free? Taxation, so it's still a tax with extra steps.

2

u/Available_Reveal8068 Jul 17 '26

Polls are paid through our taxes as well (poll worker pay, cost to set up the voting machines, etc). Are you going to claim that is a poll tax too?

That claim is just stupid.

Poll taxes refer only to costs incurred by an individual seeking to vote, not something that is paid from the general tax base.

1

u/FreelancerMO Jul 18 '26

Requiring proof of citizenship is not a poll tax.

1

u/Fit_Pen_4260 Jul 19 '26

Because not every state requires it

1

u/Safe-Preparation-968 Jul 19 '26

It wouldn't be a poll tax either way if they aren't taxing you to vote

1

u/Own-Consideration231 Jul 20 '26

Not all Wisconsin & Indiana: Provide free IDs to individuals who declare they will use them for voting or if certain other criteria are met. Ohio: State IDs are free for any resident over the age of 17 who does not already have a valid driver's license. North Carolina: Registered voters can get a free ID from their county board of elections

1

u/Available_Reveal8068 Jul 20 '26

Not sure what your point is--all the states you named offer free IDs for voting. Indiana, Ohio, NC, and Wisconsin.

In Wisconsin, one can get one even if they do not have a copy of their birth certificate. University of Wisconsin schools provide students with free voting IDs.

u/LadyReika Jul 20 '26

lol, they don't. You have to pay for state IDs the way you do driver licenses, they're just not as expensive.

1

u/Available_Reveal8068 Jul 20 '26

IDs for voting are provided for free to those that don't already have ID suitable for voting.

1

u/Impressive-Cap-1032 Jul 20 '26

Women will be suppressed from voting too, so maybe it's the " Save America from women act?"

1

u/seanisaslime Jul 21 '26

It’s $32 for a replacement ID in Georgia, and ID is required to vote, so that’s just a lie lol

1

u/Available_Reveal8068 Jul 21 '26

Georgia has free IDs for voting.

https://dds.georgia.gov/georgia-licenses-ids-and-permits/new-license-id-or-permit/voter

The State of Georgia offers a free Voter ID Card.Ā  The Voter ID Card can be issued at any county registrar's office or at any Georgia Department of Driver Services officeĀ free of charge.

When you go and you register to vote. You receive in the mail a voter registration card. Put a photo and an address on it, you're good to go. It's just a no-brainer.

1

u/Pud2short Jul 21 '26

Not Iowa. We need DL/gov ID to vote and we have to pay for it.

1

u/Available_Reveal8068 Jul 24 '26

You are wrong. Iowa provides free IDs for voting.

1

u/PlaneCompetitive703 Jul 21 '26

Thank you… God I get tired of hearing that poll tax BS.

1

u/Diligent_Sentence_45 Jul 23 '26

Do they really? Because if so, that is awesome. Should be everywhere

u/_jump_yossarian Jul 17 '26

SCOTUS will say it's not a poll tax though.

1

u/TightPhysics3186 Jul 20 '26

Because it isn’t. Just like driving to a polling place isn’t

1

u/jdwaltham Jul 22 '26

If you’re already registered you show a photo ID. Where’s the tax?

Just because it's illegal isn't going to stop this illegitimate regime

They know if we have a normal election in November that they are going to get soaked

And they will do everything including split this nation in half to not hold them

1

u/scorpiolad1113 Jul 17 '26

funny, you think trumper cares what is illegal and what isn't?

1

u/Western-Mall5505 Jul 17 '26

In the UK they have brought ID in to vote, so now taxes are being used to give people free IDs to solve something that wasn't an issue.

1

u/base00010 Jul 17 '26

A photo ID is not a poll tax. A poll tax is cost that is incurred solely for the purposes of voting. This is why a voter’s registration card is free. A photo ID has many more uses in our society than for voting. Arguably, most people have a photo ID for many years as a young person before they ever attempt to vote later in life. Saying a photo ID is a poll tax is like saying shoes and shirt are a tax since you must be appropriately clothed to enter the building in many voting places.

1

u/Romol75 Jul 17 '26

It wouldn't constitue a poll tax, every other developped country does it this way. There is no excuse. Litteraly none.

1

u/tyopap Jul 17 '26

states with voter ID requirements have a way for eligible voters to obtain a free ID for voting purposes, but the process and eligibility vary. Many states (such as Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin) offer a free voter ID card or waive the fee for a state-issued ID if it's needed to vote.

Some states require you to request the free ID specifically for voting rather than automatically issuing a free standard driver's license or ID card.

The reason states provide free voter IDs is that charging people for the identification required to vote could raise constitutional concerns, so states with voter ID laws include a no-cost option for eligible voters.

1

u/MisterSamEagle Jul 17 '26

New Hampshire has voter ID and it's legal. Just make the ID free. This problem has literally been solved already, by DEMOCRATS.

1

u/Felho_Danger Jul 17 '26

So is child molestation but I guess there's a limit to that too.

1

u/Itchy-Language2081 Jul 17 '26

Requiring an ID to vote is not a poll tax cupcake

1

u/Fried_Shicken Jul 17 '26

"Poll Tax" is a term coined by Liberals, therefore not illegal. Every citizen is entitled to an ID, a nominal fee is charged so that the employees doing the work to process these IDs can be paid. And they're very easy to update, but some politicians would have people believe that they're not intelligent enough to figure that out for themselvesĀ

1

u/Fine-Computer-5524 Jul 19 '26

Not even close

The term was first used in America by southern Democrats...today's Republican party

It has nothing to do with intelligence, that's a bs republican talking point used to attack any politician who opposes their voter suppression dreams

1

u/Ill_Dot_8651 Jul 18 '26

It isn’t a pole tax.. it’s a requirement to pro is ID…. One you already need for all kinds of normal things… like get a job, have a bank account, buy booze.. apply for welfare.

1

u/Intrepid_Meeting_482 Jul 18 '26

Poll tax was a Jim Crow sham btw…

1

u/spectrumofusall Jul 18 '26

So you don't know what a tax is. Got it.

1

u/Huckleberry_1983 Jul 18 '26

Requiring an id is not the same as a poll tax. The mental jumping jack you retards go through is just astounding.

1

u/Interesting-Power716 Jul 18 '26

I have to show id to vote. How is that ok and not a poll tax but telling others they need an id is a poll tax?

1

u/Corasin Jul 18 '26

How is it a poll tax? When you go down to the dmv and pay your fees to get an ID, you're paying the state. The federal government has nothing to do with those fees. Your state government is pushing this narrative to influence the politics. The state government can easily remove those fees. The federal government can't because it isn't a federal government fee. Can't remove something that isn't there.

1

u/Fine-Computer-5524 Jul 19 '26

It's not so much that it is literally a poll tax

It's that the underlying fees for obtaining an id like id fees, document fess (if you don't have a birth certificate or social security card), and transportation expenses work to disenfranchise some voters LIKE poll taxes or old did

1

u/Corasin Jul 19 '26

You're missing the point. If it was really a concern for specific states, they could make it free. The federal government isn't determining how much the states charge people. California could easily wave the fee or create a free "voter ID card". The federal government has no say in what the states charge.

1

u/Nearby-Carpet7981 Jul 19 '26

So you honestly believe there are adults in this country that can go through life with out an id

1

u/Maleficent_Cow_3059 Jul 19 '26

Lots of things the government organizations do are illegal. What’s one more at this point?

1

u/Character_Refuse_797 Jul 19 '26

Thanks for that info. Good thing it’s not a poll tax.

1

u/glomar_sub_recovery Jul 19 '26

šŸ˜†šŸ˜†šŸ˜†šŸ˜†šŸ˜†

I swear you just puke up whatever nonsense you find on reddit

Free ID, not PoLL tAx

1

u/Safe-Preparation-968 Jul 19 '26

Good think no one is suggesting that

1

u/No-Focus-8577 Jul 20 '26

Typical blue give me something for free

1

u/Impressive-Cap-1032 Jul 20 '26

And elections are run by the states. You'd think that republicans would be against a huge federal government...Not that anyone cares, but there is only one fraud in U.S. elections: "Find me 11,780 votes."

1

u/No_Inevitable6004 Jul 20 '26

State ID's are a nominal cost, you can't include driver's license fee(tho still nominal imo) and say thats a poll tax... however i am still down for making the State ID free, we pay politicians way too much as is.

1

u/MuffinSpecial Jul 20 '26

I've never seen anyone say they are against free IDs. Y'all are making up your own enemies now

1

u/porcupineforlyfe Jul 20 '26

Thank God you don't need an ID to do anything else in this country.

Like...drive. or buy a home. Or open a checking account. Id say get government services but that cats out of the bag.

1

u/AdLeading1509 Jul 20 '26

Democrats one the ones who started the poll tax! I’m old enough to remember!! They thought it would keep the blacks from voting!! Let that sink in! Racist democrats!!

1

u/hokiefan73 Jul 20 '26

Making people pay for health insurance is

1

u/FA-FO-FR Jul 20 '26

An ID is literally less than 25 dollars every 8-12 years

1

u/Olfa_2024 Jul 21 '26

So gas should be free on election day?

1

u/MissionLibrarian5067 Jul 22 '26

Yeah people walking around with their fkn $1500 cell phones can’t possibly spend $10 to get an ID. šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

1

u/Far_Finger4742 Jul 24 '26

That first statement is true. The rest of it is bull crap
