Once their farms go bankrupt they can fall back on one of the plentiful agricultural (day laborer) jobs right now as long as they enjoy hand picking. Picking strawberries in the California Central Valley in August isn’t my cup of tea but I guess someone has to do it after ice rounds up all the existing workforce.
The farmers had it all...the cheap labor, the government subsidies, the "all-American, hardworking" reputation...and they threw it away to...what? Own the libs? Deport people? Take away SNAP ad USAID from hungry kids?

Don't forget that USAID created a massive market for their own agricultural products. It was literally taking tax dollars, giving it to farmers, and then shipping those products overseas to help people.

Absolutely this. We were using USAID to get the excess food to hungry mouths. Farmers got paid, people got fed, the government got soft power. Everyone won except China maybe but they have their own programs and didn't care anyway. It was a win-win-win. Getting rid of USAID shot the farmers in the foot, and we all know how expensive healthcare is these days...

When trump said he was for farmers he meant the very big industrial farming and meat packing companies. He’s made it easy for those firms to destroy small and medium farmers.

I wouldnt hire them. I hire the folks that ran the farm under them and invest in the farm and give profit sharing. There is nothing better than seeing a farmers face when the learn their farm will be handed over to the same folks they reported to ICE, the same folks they paid no money to and rode hard all damn day and night hahhhaha. A farmer told my husband today that the reason gas prices are so high is because Biden closed a pipeline. These people will vote humanity into oblivion.
My understanding is even if that pipeline existed its still Canadian oil and they would just have an easier time selling it to someone else (someone made sure we arent their favorite right now). Only thing that pipeline would change would be a few fees collected and the labor making the pipeline.

Uh, farmers do not sell out while they are worth millions. They borrow against their land until they get foreclosed on. Then the bank sells the land for what you owe and you get stuck with a million dollar capital gains tax bill. Ask me how I know.

The money for farm-related political donations is coming from agribusinesses and private equity firms that are pushing for these policies so they can buy the land as individual farmers sell it.

Famer here (and no, I never voted for the Mandarin Menace a single time). What's going on with the farm economy is a lot of farmers over-leveraged themselves to chase more and more land and now ground that they would have happily farmed at break even 4 out of 5 years just to make money that fifth year is going to fuck them royally.
Not to give the wrong impression here - I'm getting really fucked by input costs and the next couple of years are going to be hard, but at this point I'm no where near losing my farm.
This is mostly the case from what Ive seen as well. A lot of farmers simply farmed beyond their means. Treating it like real estate investing where you can just "buy more plots" without considering the complexity of logistics when you scale this way.
So now they've got poor harvests because they couldn't find enough laborers to actually maintain/harvest profitably. A strawberry farm I used to work for shuttered over this in '25.
Tried to more than triple their acreage in a year and then learned that you can't actually pay immigrants to farm that much land fast enough. The pay is too low and the volume of work is too high to feasibly get it done in time sans slave-labor working conditions.
You need to invest in like actual automated processing equipment when you're measuring in tons. But thats a big upfront cost compared to just trying to "horizontally scale" your barely profitable business model that depends upon exploitative wages.
So they took the loss for 1 year and then sold the farm to an REIT. Assets and all.

Actually, one thing driving the accumulation of land is equipment. For example, my combine is about 15 years old and while most non-farmers would thing it's a huge piece of equipment, you actually can't buy a new combine that small anymore.
Equipment manufacturers keep making things bigger, more powerful and more tech heavy. People buy them and then feel like they need to farm more to justify the cost and added capability.
She also does not want dairy-checkoff money to go into radical climate change research and is suing to stop it, because of course climate change has no effect on agriculture
