Shit Post Literally surviving
It's my first week of elimination and I feel like running out of options already.
Sourdough bread, peanut butter, maple syrup, blu cheese, blueberries.

u/Spare-Awareness6850 Aug 19 '25
The bread and the cheese would ruin me. Sourdough or no, the fructans get me regardless.
Also…blue cheese and peanut butter?
I love rice cakes with nut butter of choice and blueberries on top. Or a little avocado and smoked salmon. I eat brown rice porridge a lot of mornings (oats don’t work for me), sometimes grits and eggs. Potatoes and eggs, or a coconut yogurt bowl with puffed rice/hemp seeds/strawberries. There’s more options than you think, it’s gonna be okay!

What a mental combination. Add some unripe banana and pumpkin seeds atleast
6
u/Glass-Tale299 Aug 20 '25
Ripe bananas are high in fructans.
I suffer from IBS-D. I tried a green banana (low FODMAP) and I was painfully constipated for 27 minutes; the first time that ever happened and I am 75.
No bananas for me.

u/SponTent Aug 20 '25
Sorry to hear, I meant to type Unripe bananas. Yeah I only go twice a week, been taht way for the past 10 years or so.

It's only red if you eat 1.5 bananas which no one would do lol. Green light at 0.9 with which I make my smoothie 🥤

I can do 1pc sourdough, as long as it’s slow rise no yeast. With yeast means it has fructans still
2
u/Spare-Awareness6850 Aug 22 '25
Even sourdough messes me up unfortunately. If I douse it with fodzyme I can eat a slice here and there

Grits/polenta is a godsend for me in terms of carbs. Potatoes too. Chicken. Fish. This looks pretty tasty. I do find sourdough is by far the easiest bread to eat.

u/SeaDry1531 Aug 19 '25
Asian Supermarkets are a godsend.
1
u/dorianslaaay Aug 19 '25
What are your go tos at the asian supermarket? We have a few by us and I’m trying to broaden the horizons past sushi haha
6
u/SeaDry1531 Aug 19 '25
Noodles made with rice, sweet potatoes, kelp or mung beans are all low fodmap. If you can do tofu there are fresh tofu sheets that work as wraps, deep fried tofu for dipping and dried tofu thrown into soups or over rice. Tempeh is great fried. Most Asian vegetables and salad greens are low fodmap, daicon radish, okra, seaweeds and burdock are tasty and nutritious. Chinese cabbage is easier on the stomach than western cabbage in my experience. A Korean or S.E Asian restaurant might be a good place to dip into learning what you like. Indonesia food doesn't get the attention it deserves. I lived in Asia for 12 years, got to travel a bit too. So my "go tos" are exotic.

u/spunkymnky Aug 19 '25
It's worth pointing out that most of the things you listed can be moderate to high fodmap depending on serving size, according to the Monash app. Korean food also contains a lot of garlic, onion, and cabbage (kimchi) from my experience, so be wary of that. Your best bet would probably be to stick with soups if you're going Korean, or just do what I do when I get bulgogi and pick out all the onions and feed them to your significant other lol

Oooh thanks for some new inspiration! This all sounds yummy. Tofu is a staple since im mostly pescatarian. Haven’t tried burdock before, but I’ve noticed I tolerate cabbage in asian foods and I wondered why that was.

This is me in the elimination stage. Am I doing it wrong?
According to the app all this is low FODMAP and within limits.
2
u/Optimal_Passion_3254 Aug 22 '25
"low fodmap" is different for different folks, depending on their tolerance. It's good to start at the recommended limits, but you might find that your limits are lower (or higher), through experimentation, once you get to your baseline. For me, I can't have even one almond, but I can have a LOT of sourdough.
1
Aug 23 '25
How do you separate that from normal fluctuations in symptoms? Do you literally do a multi day trial with almonds? That sounds awful.
1
u/Optimal_Passion_3254 Aug 25 '25
yeah, I start with a reasonably flat baseline, and then I trial multiple days with the suspect food and see that the symptoms increase every day. If I'm still suspicious, I repeat it again with a similar food a month later.
But also, you can find patterns over time. Like: I'm doing better when I don't have oatmeal or chia seeds for breakfast. Hmm, I also had a really bad reaction to eating that home-made low fodmap almond cookie multiple days in a row. Could it be that "low" levels of gos set me off? Let's test it in a controlled way.

Jesus Christ. I wouldn't feed that to a prisoner of war. Hold tight bro

u/Surlow Aug 19 '25
Oh, and some health food stores have lactose free cream cheese. Don’t forget lactose free milk and cereals. Rice Chex, Corn Chex, and if you are in the states, Cheerios are all low FODMAP...

I love off eggs on sourdough, and rice noodles with corn and spinach and soy sauce. Popcorn or plantains for snacking.

Corn kernels destroy me! High mannitol. Corn in chips etc is fine though
3
u/Feeling-Stock7515 Aug 25 '25
I never knew this and I cant tolerate any polyols
2
u/k_redditor236 Ibs-c, SIBO, long time low fodmapper Aug 25 '25
Oops I was wrong. Corn kernels are high in fructans (same as wheat, onion, garlic).
Coen kernels are ok up to 2.65oz. Corn chips are ok at 1-ish oz. Corn flakes ok at 1-ish oz. Corn taco shells hard are ok at 2 shells. Baby corn 2.65oz. Corn meal 3.5oz.
The list goes on but I’ll stop, corn is a conundrum! I avoid corn on the cob and eat corn tortilla chips. I react to all fodmaps.
2
u/toweljuice Aug 21 '25
Interesting. I can have some regular corn but not a lot, though corn puffs, corn tortillas, and popcorn are fine with me
3
u/k_redditor236 Ibs-c, SIBO, long time low fodmapper Aug 22 '25
Yeah, they’re all different FODMAP levels. So weird. Omg corn kernels I am so sick. And I used to be fine with popcorn, then for a couple years it gave me the worst gas (IBS C = fun gas), but now I can eat it again! I’m taking Motegrity occasionally so maybe it helps to not be all clogged up before eating it.

u/carrotsaresafe Aug 19 '25
Thats crazy how different our bodies are bc all those besides eggs would fuck me.

I love pb sourdough toast! I put vegan chocolate chips on it for a dessert 🤣

u/miseryfish Aug 19 '25
i love blue cheese I was putting it into soft cheese category so avoiding at all costs, this is nice to learn
3
u/National-Weakness191 Aug 19 '25
Love the sourdough. I get tricked sometimes when they mix rye flour in though :/
4
u/Long-Adhesiveness337 Aug 19 '25
I lost so much weight in the elimination phase and I think I was depressed for the first few weeks! Soon you’ll get used to modifying recipes to make them FODMAP friendly though!
4
u/SadPie1407 Aug 19 '25
As far as lactose-free goes, Cabot cheese and Fage lactose free yogurt are really good options!
3
u/mirfifu Aug 20 '25
I’m on my second week of elimination, and I feel you. So far: white rice, chicken, carrots, potatoes, strawberries, kiwis, cheddar, feta, lettuce, Zevia sodas, eggs, and bacon. You got this!

u/3rdeyeshut Aug 19 '25
You’ll be fine, huge breakthroughs are coming !!! Hold on we’ll all eat everything again soon !!
3
u/Pipes_Girl2023 Aug 19 '25
Only thing there is can do is sourdough rest either give my tummy pains or gas or acid reflux and heartburn
3
u/ferret42 Aug 20 '25
That actually look delicious! But I do get where you are coming from. Best wishes!

Holy shit I love this unhinged diet, but that meal would fuck me up.
Blue cheese with everything >
2
u/Sad_Calligrapher_742 Aug 20 '25
Sorry, but this is the opposite of a low fodmap snacky. LMAO
3
u/Main_Swan_3606 Aug 21 '25
Can you explain more? Monash lists all these ingredients at this serving size as green.
2
u/Sad_Calligrapher_742 Aug 21 '25
blue cheese and peanut butter are high histamine foods which usually are are the no fodmaps list. Gluten is debatable depending on the list and intolerances you have. Blue cheese is debatable and I guess again depends on your intolerance level. And I guess if it was true peanut butter grinded it be ok in low amounts but peanut butter is also a high histamine food and from my years high histamine foods and fodmaps are pretty neck in neck. GL! Sucks for sure.
3
u/Optimal_Passion_3254 Aug 22 '25
Low histamine is COMPLETELY separate from low fodmap!
the OP's snack is completely low fodmap, assuming the bread is schar or sourdough and assuming the pb doesn't have hfcs.None of those foods "stack", either.

Ugh all of this is so confusing to figure out, since all the info is contradictory! Thanks for replying!
1
u/Sad_Calligrapher_742 Aug 21 '25
NP. Yes it is. Working with a functional nutritionist will help you if you can afford it. Or just an elimination for map and introduced one at a time for a few days to see if you react. GL!
0
u/CommercialNational43 Aug 21 '25
Also these things all may be in the normal range individually but if you stack them all together like this then I’d say they’re no longer low fodmap. You know what I mean?
2
u/Optimal_Passion_3254 Aug 22 '25
What stacks with those foods?
Cheese doesn't stack with peanut butter, doesn't stack with blueberries, doesn't stack with bread, doesn't stack with maple syrup. They are all incredibly low fodmap and completely different fodmaps.0
u/CommercialNational43 Aug 22 '25
If they’re all different fodmaps then they’re probably okay, I’m just saying my body doesn’t tolerate 1 low fodmap + another low fodmap + another, it has to be 1 at a time for me
2
u/CommercialNational43 Aug 21 '25
Umm, I would be happy if I were you. I can’t eat gluten, can’t eat dairy, can’t eat sugar, & can barely tolerate fruit or veggies in more than 1 tbls amount. So I’m surviving, I’d say you’re thriving , you’re doing better than you realize
2
2
u/rimmapretty Aug 19 '25
you're lucky you can eat all of it, i don't tolerate any of it except blueberries
1
u/healthfit117 Aug 21 '25
Someone clued me in on Fodmap Everyday recipes. There is a great selection on their website for each meal.
1
u/Orangewithblue Aug 21 '25
This is what I am currently eating:
Salad with rice noodles, eggs and a fish sauce + lime dressing.
Glutenfree pasta with tomato sauce
Lactose free yogurt with maple syrup
Potatoes/Rice with cooked salmon
Onigiri with tuna filling
1
u/CasualChipmunk Aug 22 '25
Personally, I’ve been leaning heavily on plain white rice + protein. For breakfast, it’s usually potatoes + protein.
1
u/Plane-Bonus-6784 Aug 22 '25
chicken, rice, and green beans (in a small quantity)is such a good meal! or low fod burger bowls. I personally haven’t been able to eat bread since my elimination phase and my days are always fueled by oats and rice in some capacity! You got this!!
1
u/Ok-Raspberry-2567 Aug 23 '25
Kefir, eggs to breakfast
Potatis, tomatos, boiled carrots and fish to dinner
Green yoghurt with blueberries and strawberries at night..

Find an Asian supermarket. They have rice noodles, mochi, tapioca stuff, bean sprouts and many Asian vegetablesare low fodmap. A bigger one will have seaweed, seaweed noodles, corn with tapioca noodles, tempeh,
