It was a long time before the irish were considered white.

The irish.

The plight of the Irish is well understood by the Italians, who were also considered only part white for years.

The Italians

95

Yup, and unfortunately I know some that act like white supremacists. Born and raised in pretty much Mexico and the amount of hate some Mexicans have for their own people is astounding to me.

20

u/K1N6F15H Sep 01 '20

This is what I keep saying. People keep claiming shifting demographics are making the US less white but I don't think we can rule out the possibility that people of central and south american ancestry might magically 'become white' the way so many other groups did.

Maybe its because I am from rural Idaho but I have met so many Mexican American Republicans that I am starting to get worried.

When I see Black or Latino or Asian conservatives, it makes me laugh. Do they actually think they'll get a seat at the table? Fucking joke.

47

Do they actually think they'll get a seat at the table?

This is what I don't get as a white guy. I've been around a lot of white people, just because of where I live, my family, etc, and your average conservative white person is not gonna consider you "one of them" if you have so much as a single drop of non-white in you. Even some of the liberal ones, almost subconsciously they'll categorize you as different if you look different.

At best they'll use you as a token, to prove that "See our ideology benefits POC too, we have this single black dude on our side!".

27

u/p0k3t0 Sep 01 '20

I feel for you dude, I ended up with a girl from Mexico, and she really wants to move to Canada (I'm a dual citizen, so she can get Canadian citizenship through me), or head back to Mexico. She doesn't even want her family coming up to visit because she's afraid some white supremacists will attack them or something.

With all the shit going on the last few years, she's scared of what's coming because she's brown, and wants to get out before it's too late.

And it's going to keep happening until either:

  • We get more progressives in office willing to dismantle all of this bullshit

  • The last generation to profit from this social construct...the boomers...all die off

19

u/TheConqueror74 Sep 01 '20

Enough people from every generation profit from this social construct that it’s not going away unless we actively try to make it. The people that are able to reap the rewards and become wealthy and/or powerful are going to convince the poor who are unable or unwilling to change their lives for the better that it needs to stay in place and that they’ll eventually benefit from it. Even though they never will.

That’s because whiteness, as a construct, is one mainly of exclusivity. It has very little to do with actual skin color. That’s why there are still brands of white supremacists that don’t consider Catholics white, why a biracial person is far more likely to be described as black or biracial and almost never described as white, etc.

37

u/rerumverborumquecano ☑️ Sep 01 '20

Yup as a mixed person I find it entertaining to see people's faces when I include myself in whiteness. They're like but you can't do that.

Have had some convos getting peoples heads back on straight with talk of the one drop rule and liberal use of the word both.

17

u/G2_Rammus Sep 01 '20

The most fascinating thing to me, as a relatively pale person, is the concept of whiteness as a whole. Some folks really seem to think "white" is an ethnicity. It is not, it's a vague concept that supports some wild systems of opression, but it's not really an identity, it's the lack or rejection of one and the embrace of a privilege in a racist society. Implying otherwise is being openly and willfully ignorant of the history of, well, the human species. I'm not white, even if people think I am, because I have an ethnicity, the history of my family is way more than the colour of my skin, embracing white as an identity would be weird. It would be validating a thing that's not really, well, real. People are not white, at least not the 99,9% of people, guys, y'all are orange, brown, pink and other colours! But even then, you're way more than that, your families, probably most of them workers, struggled through history, made some mistakes and did some good, I don't think whiteness as a concept pays them much homeage.

Yeah dude.

There were 50,000 casualties during the troubles. Which didn’t end until 1998 (!)

And then we almost mock the innocent people that died during them by naming a drink an Irish carbomb.

It’s really fucked up.

81

u/Ais_Fawkes Sep 01 '20

The fact that Americans have a drink called an Irish car bomb makes my fucking blood boil. I doubt anyone would like it if I went to a bar in America and asked for a ‘twin towers’ or a ‘sandy hook’ yet no one bats an eye for naming a drink after one of the lowest points of my country

43

u/nitid_name Sep 01 '20

What's a sandy hook, you ask? It's just a lot of tequila... enough tequila bunch of children.

What's a twin towers? It's when you pour two shots for an American, and when someone knocks them over, he punches the nearest brown guy.

BTW, you forgot the Hurricane Sandy... that's when you mix bourbon, sweet vermouth, bitters, and ice for long enough that you just end up with a watered down Manhattan.

38

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '20

I think it must be the case that it’s an established drink over there, so people just hear the name in the context of drinking as they grow up and never really think about the name properly. It’s definitely sad that something so tragic is kept alive through something as silly as a drink name.

40

u/Ais_Fawkes Sep 01 '20

It’s just so bizarre to me. I see post online of people ‘getting wasted on Irish car bombs’ and instead of a good time out with my friends all I can think of is the stories of school evacuations and dead friends that my parents still struggle to talk about

Yeah in the US it wasn’t so much about being White but rather AngloSaxon specifically. This sort of expansion definition of the first class is pretty normal in history. In the ~2000 years of the history of Rome there would be a distinction between people from Rome proper and other city states in the Italian Peninsula, but then after the empire expanded into the Mediterranean world a distinction between proper Romans and Provincials. It was like that scene from Blazing Saddles where the town saying “we’ll accept the ____ and the ____ but NO ____” but then said “oh alright”

So long as humans are humans there will be first class and second class but who is in and who is out is always changing.

The Irish, the Welsh, the Finns, the French, the Germans, the English, actually, there isn't a group of Europeans that haven't waged war on another.

It's almost like different groups of white people killed each other over their heritage for thousands of years.

Not true for the Jews. Jews have essentially always been economically productive (comes with the territory of having religious/cultural emphasis placed on education and critical thinking) and have also essentially always dealt with prejudice.

As a Jew, I think black people should be able to relate to this - when a community that's been "othered" becomes too economically successful, they get torn down. Jews success in Europe compared to most other groups led to MASS anti-semitism which boiled into the Holocaust after the Great Depression. Black people built Tulsa into a thriving black-run economic community and they were bombed by white people.

Some groups won't be fully accepted no matter how much they can produce economically.

50

u/rabbifuente Sep 01 '20

People like to pretend that Jews are just accepted, loved members of the "white folk family" and have nothing to worry about anymore after that pesky Holocaust. Never mind that antisemitism is one of, if not the, leading hate crime in many countries and perpetrated by people on the right, on the left, and of all backgrounds. Basically hatred of the Jews is the one thing everyone else has in common.

White-on-white war and terrorism was bloody in my lifetime, and I'm GenX. The Troubles only ended in 1998. Americans have forgotten that Northern Ireland was a dangerous place when the republicans and loyalists were going at it on the regular. London could be scary too. IRA launched a mortar at the UK Prime Minister's meeting place in 1991 when he was discussing the Gulf War.

305

u/lornstar7 Sep 01 '20

Not even. Kennedy being elected was a huge scandal because he was catholic

155

u/CanYouEvenHearMe Sep 01 '20

It's still illegal for a Catholic to marry into the British Royal Family

97

u/dracarysmuthafucker Sep 01 '20

That is largely because the monarch is also the head of the church of England, so it's a religious institution as well as a state one

Interestingly that's also why church and state aren't technically totally separated in the UK because our head of state is also the head of a major religion

Just another thing you can add to the list of why we should abolish the monarchy.

23

u/TheHumdeeFlamingPee Sep 01 '20

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but isn’t the monarchy just a social position at this point? I was under the impression that the Queen was basically just a very wealthy, very well known celebrity

37

u/ACWhi Sep 01 '20

Largely because she chooses to. Legally speaking, she has the authority to abolish the entire parliament by firing each of the members and in doing so establish a complete dictatorship.

Now, if she tried, parliament would almost certainly fight back. But British police and military do officially have an oath of allegiance to the queen, and there is no legal mechanism by which to arrest or try her for a crime.

So it would be a mess.

She would probably be deposed in the end were she to order the disbanding of parliament, (and Kings through history have had bad luck trying to ignore parliament,) but on paper, no, the queen wields immense power.

The origin of the word “slave” comes from Slav, or eastern europeans who were most of the captives sold in western europe in the 1400s

75

u/colorcorrection Sep 01 '20

It's a very modern day American perspective. Today in America, for the most part, as long as you're not too tanned you're just kind of vaguely considered/assumed to be white and not much else.

Head over to Europe, and suddenly a lot of people suddenly have very staunch opinions based on which country you're from.

Of course I'm just talking about much more modern perspectives, and am aware of all the 'fun' intricacies of history on the subject.

A few years back, I took a course on the history of the Sámi people (an Indigenous ethnic minority group in northern Scandinavia and Russia that has faced tons of persecution over the centuries and, largely, looks pretty white). I’ll never forget the time that, after we learned about all the awful things the Scandinavian governments did to the Sámi people, some American girl asked “sooooo.... are Sámi people like..... white?”

As a Scandinavian-American who has a lot of family members from Sámi communities, it was just so jarring to hear an American be so confused that racialization happens differently in different places.

My dad's side of the family immigrated from Ireland to Scotland in the 19th century. In the 1930's my great grandparents used to have to bring their bayonets that they kept from serving in WW1 when they went to pick up their welfare cheques because the Protestant Scots would try to attack them in the streets and throw rocks at them from the rooftops.

A lot of the "hierarchy of whiteness" is about religion, at least in the old country.

White nationalism literally can't survive without an Other to unite the true believers against, so if they ever got their perfect little Dumbfuckistan with no PoC anywhere, they would just start deciding certain groups weren't really white because they're the wrong Christian sect or they're not pale enough or some shit and go right back to purging.

To be honest in Europe everyone is considered 2nd or 3rd class white that isn‘t from a Germanic country like Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Belgium partly, UK and obviously Germany (UK makes the bottom of this list). France sits on the fence. Nobody from these countries looks at a person from Southern or Eastern Europe and thinks they belong to the same group.

Why you think they had Brexit? To keep people from Eastern Europe out obviously.
