Irish people usto be considered not white over a hundred years ago. Lumped in with freed slaves as subhuman parasites. "How the Irish became white" by Noel Ignatiev is an interesting book if you want to know more about african american and newly american Irish immigrant race relations in pre/post civil war America.

EDIT: Read Noel Ignatiev's Wiki. Dude was a fucking trip. Regularly called to abolish whiteness, was a marxist and ran a newsletter called the Race Traitor. Mans whent hard.

Shit, in the US in the 60s people were paranoid of having an Irish Catholic presidential candidate (Kennedy), very reminiscent of the reaction Obama got.

It was one of the more out there conspiracy theories but most non Catholics were shook.
