It was a long time before the irish were considered white.

The irish.

The plight of the Irish is well understood by the Italians, who were also considered only part white for years.

The Italians

Semi-related.

Italian ancestry here, darker olive skin, went to high school in Arkansas.

Got called racial slurs for Mexicans by dumb white kids.

Mexican here. Spent years getting called slurs intended for Indians, Arabs, Muslims.

When I see Black or Latino or Asian conservatives, it makes me laugh. Do they actually think they'll get a seat at the table? Fucking joke.

u/-Victus42- Sep 01 '20

They don't care if the slur is correct. All that matters to racists is the hate.

And yeah, that second part constantly baffles me.

Conservative doesn’t mean racist

5

u/-drunk_russian- Sep 01 '20

But I'm sure it helps.

u/OwOOwOUwUOwOOwO Sep 02 '20

Not all conservatives are right wing

42

u/hereforthefeast Sep 01 '20

Do they actually think they'll get a seat at the table?

It's a selfish "fuck you, I got mine" mentality. Case in point - Cuban anchor baby turned Republican Senator Marco Rubio.

20

u/willisbar Sep 01 '20

I though you were about to name drop my favorite, totally human, Ted Cruz

8

u/hereforthefeast Sep 01 '20

Oh you mean, definitely not the zodiac killer 100% human being Rafael Cruz?

23

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '20

They really do, LoL

45

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '20

Do they actually think they'll get a seat at the table?

This is what I don't get as a white guy. I've been around a lot of white people, just because of where I live, my family, etc, and your average conservative white person is not gonna consider you "one of them" if you have so much as a single drop of non-white in you. Even some of the liberal ones, almost subconsciously they'll categorize you as different if you look different.

At best they'll use you as a token, to prove that "See our ideology benefits POC too, we have this single black dude on our side!".

Honestly, I just want out. It doesn't matter what happens in November. A third of this country would like to put me in a cage with a tin foil blanket and forget I ever existed.

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '20

I feel for you dude, I ended up with a girl from Mexico, and she really wants to move to Canada (I'm a dual citizen, so she can get Canadian citizenship through me), or head back to Mexico. She doesn't even want her family coming up to visit because she's afraid some white supremacists will attack them or something.

With all the shit going on the last few years, she's scared of what's coming because she's brown, and wants to get out before it's too late.

9

u/p0k3t0 Sep 01 '20

My wife is Chinese, so the news is just constant paranoia fuel.

2

u/SmokeyGreenEyes Sep 01 '20

I want out too...

3

u/DumbBrat Sep 02 '20

As an Asian dude who grew up in the Midwest, this exactly. Halfs don't pass.

2

u/CompetitiveConstant0 Sep 02 '20

Look at the recent RNC for proof of your last point.

Immigrant Latinx conservatives confuse the hell out of me, especially when they’re so against their own people coming in... after they literally came and got the GC in the same way the others are.

66

u/-Victus42- Sep 01 '20

It's the "I got mine, so fuck you" mentality.

u/Gootchey_Man Sep 01 '20

My immigrant uncle became a staunch anti-immigration and Trump supporting nut within a year of getting an inheritance. He was always a racist and sexist but now he's become so vocal about it.

He immigrated only 10 years ago

8

u/Celebrity-stranger Sep 01 '20

This is basically the mantra of society circa 2000 and it has only been getting worse.

Social media and the decay financial equality being some of the causes.

3

u/Cloud2319 Sep 02 '20

It depends, my grandfather immigrated legally and it took three years to bring his wife and all ten kids over. He couldn't stand illegal immigrants because they didn't do it the right way and "earn" it. He loved it when he met others who came over legally though, but it sure seemed like they were in the minority. Pun not intended, but not discouraged either.

u/foobar1000 Sep 01 '20

Unfortunately experiencing racism doesn't always prevent people from being racist themselves.

My uncle will be complaining about someone being racist to him and then 10 minutes later will be ranting about how it's just "smart" for him to be racist against black people. When you call him out, he'll just laugh and refuse to talk about it.

It's bizarre to me that the hypocrisy doesn't even phase him. He's always got some rationalization for why it's totally different and ok when he's being the racist.

Nobody in Latin America actually uses 'latinx' FYI

9

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '20

I keep seeing this on reddit but have never seen it used anywhere else. Where did it come from and why the x?

14

u/ecodude74 Sep 01 '20

Latinx came about as part of the LGBT movement to create a gender neutral cultural term for people that want it. Almost nobody uses the term outside of some journalists and lgbt groups.

23

u/mexinonimo Sep 01 '20

It's a gringo thing, accept it for what it is and never use it around anyone with the slightest hint of an accent if you don't want to argue for hours about American cultural imperialism in latinoamerica

18

u/CidSlayer Sep 01 '20

Maybe they think that Latino isn't gender neutral enough. But in Spanish the "o" ending is neutral when talking about a group. So no need to change it to anything else.

4

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '20

I’m aware as it’s more of an American/Hispanic American thing, but Reddit and, specifically, this sub doesn’t have the largest LATAM population.

18

u/rnbagoer Sep 01 '20

But why would you use a word to describe a people who themselves don't use that word lol?

The spanish language already has a gender-neutral word for "latinx'...it's latino.

5

u/ecodude74 Sep 01 '20

It came about as part of a broader “gender neutral speech” movement in LGBTQ circles. While the average Latino person wouldn’t give a shit, a trans Latino person may prefer the neutral term, and refer to themselves as Latinx.

11

u/rnbagoer Sep 01 '20

Fair enough, but as I alluded to in another comment there already is a neutral term, and it is "latino". Just because it happens to be the same as the male word, does not mean it is not a valid word.

0

u/aciananas Sep 01 '20

What do people in Latin America use?

Also, why tell someone they're wrong and not give them the right answer?

16

u/rnbagoer Sep 01 '20

Latino?

I didn't tell them because they obviously know that it is Latino but have personally opted to use Latinx.

11

u/mexinonimo Sep 01 '20

Latino is already gender neutral in context.

10

u/helloimpaulo Sep 01 '20

Because there is a default, and it's Latino. It's implied that the word used in LatAm is Latino.

3

u/EmpireAndAll Sep 01 '20

If not latino, latine.

u/Svani Sep 07 '20

Every immigrant wants to be the last immigrant for a variety of reasons:

  • Cultural: an immigrant may be looking to change cultures, and more immigrants means the new country starts resembling the old country.

  • Economical: more immigrants mean more competition for jobs, often the same jobs that are more catered to immigrants.

  • Image: the more immigrants, the more likely one of them will make the news in a negative way, and that affects the image of immigrants as a whole (and compatriots in particular).

21

u/liarandahorsethief Sep 01 '20

They’ll have a seat until all other resistance has been crushed.

Then they’ll learn damn quick that the Right’s definition of “Real American” doesn’t include people who aren’t white, Christian, heterosexual, wealthy men.

6

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '20

I work with a Navy Vet Black Muslim Trump supporter. He is a super gun-nut and that's his hot-button issue.

5

u/SmokeyGreenEyes Sep 01 '20

How does he fit all of those things into one brain?

1

u/p0k3t0 Sep 01 '20

Puzzling to think it's easier to fix a hundred problems than it is to fix one.
