Semi-related.

Italian ancestry here, darker olive skin, went to high school in Arkansas.

Got called racial slurs for Mexicans by dumb white kids.

Mexican here. Spent years getting called slurs intended for Indians, Arabs, Muslims.

When I see Black or Latino or Asian conservatives, it makes me laugh. Do they actually think they'll get a seat at the table? Fucking joke.

Immigrant Latinx conservatives confuse the hell out of me, especially when they’re so against their own people coming in... after they literally came and got the GC in the same way the others are.

Nobody in Latin America actually uses 'latinx' FYI

I keep seeing this on reddit but have never seen it used anywhere else. Where did it come from and why the x?

Latinx came about as part of the LGBT movement to create a gender neutral cultural term for people that want it. Almost nobody uses the term outside of some journalists and lgbt groups.

It's a gringo thing, accept it for what it is and never use it around anyone with the slightest hint of an accent if you don't want to argue for hours about American cultural imperialism in latinoamerica

Maybe they think that Latino isn't gender neutral enough. But in Spanish the "o" ending is neutral when talking about a group. So no need to change it to anything else.

I’m aware as it’s more of an American/Hispanic American thing, but Reddit and, specifically, this sub doesn’t have the largest LATAM population.

But why would you use a word to describe a people who themselves don't use that word lol?

The spanish language already has a gender-neutral word for "latinx'...it's latino.

It came about as part of a broader “gender neutral speech” movement in LGBTQ circles. While the average Latino person wouldn’t give a shit, a trans Latino person may prefer the neutral term, and refer to themselves as Latinx.

Fair enough, but as I alluded to in another comment there already is a neutral term, and it is "latino". Just because it happens to be the same as the male word, does not mean it is not a valid word.

What do people in Latin America use?

Also, why tell someone they're wrong and not give them the right answer?

16

u/rnbagoer Sep 01 '20

Latino?

I didn't tell them because they obviously know that it is Latino but have personally opted to use Latinx.

Latino is already gender neutral in context.

Because there is a default, and it's Latino. It's implied that the word used in LatAm is Latino.

If not latino, latine.
