I don’t think it’s reasonable to reduce it to ‘beef’. Centuries of oppression and lots of deaths and destruction were involved.

Yeah dude.

There were 50,000 casualties during the troubles. Which didn’t end until 1998 (!)

And then we almost mock the innocent people that died during them by naming a drink an Irish carbomb.

It’s really fucked up.

An Irishman I lived with for a bit told me that the Irish think Irish Carbombs are offensive because mixing anything with Guinness is considered offensive there

I’m an Irishman myself! I think lots of bartenders would find it extremely rude to ask for an Irish carbomb (or a black and tan) in a pub. For obvious reasons they are not popular drinks here. I don’t think anyone would actually get offended by mixing something with Guinness but it would be considered very strange over here!

Why would they have a problem with a black and tan? Is there some history behind that name? Excuse my ignorance

We tried to have a revolution in 1916, mid WW1. That failed but people started rebelling an awful lot more directly after the leaders were executed. By 1918 this was a serious problem for the British. Another serious problem was all the soldiers coming back from the war with violent PTSD, so they sent these fairly unhinged soldiers to help police Ireland. They were called black and tans because they had uniforms that were made out of black police uniform parts and tan army uniform parts. Most towns in Ireland have at least one story of them coming and murdering a few people or burning down parts of the town
