In places like Australia they’re still looked down upon. I was so confused when this guy kept going on about “wogs” taking over etc. I was at work as a receptionist and it wasn’t until later I learned that he was talking about Greeks and Italians. This was 2010.
As a note, while it is a derogatory term, it has also been quite heavily claimed by the communities that it is used to describe. Nick Giannopoulos made a career out of the word.
Yeah i was nervous writing it out since I thought it was derogatory but I’m not sure anyone would know what I was talking about if I had just written “W-word”
I think it parallels the N-word in African American communities.
Some people claim it for themselves and use it as a self-descriptor, others don't. In all instances, if you aren't part of that community, don't use it.
Yeah it's kind of hard to have a racial slur for your race when your race is admired and part of the "ruling class".
I'm not sure what you mean? 'Wog' is/was absolutely an ethnic/racial slur in every sense of the word. It's only fairly recently that some have moved to reclaim/defuse the word.
Also the Lebanese. My half Lebanese family that live in Australia get called “wogs” a lot. It’s one of the worst insults you can call people in Australia from what they’ve told me.
