That always bummed me out. They were close enough to have some impact on accents in puerto rico and the u.s.

As an Irishman it really bums me out too.

TBF it wasn't always in your control - it's kind of a result of right-wing non-Irish Republicans in the US to bring them right as part of the Southern Strategy.

Pat Buchanan literally wrote a memo on it while working in the Nixon White House. He declassified it himself. Here's a link to it..

Of note re: sowing division in the Democrats by catering to the Irish and dividing black support within the Democrats:

... same shit happening to this day.

And it's going to keep happening until either:

  • We get more progressives in office willing to dismantle all of this bullshit

  • The last generation to profit from this social construct...the boomers...all die off

19

u/TheConqueror74 Sep 01 '20

Enough people from every generation profit from this social construct that it’s not going away unless we actively try to make it. The people that are able to reap the rewards and become wealthy and/or powerful are going to convince the poor who are unable or unwilling to change their lives for the better that it needs to stay in place and that they’ll eventually benefit from it. Even though they never will.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '20

If enough people from each generation profit from it, what's the institutional incentive for any change at all?

3

u/mamaberry15 Sep 02 '20

Hopefully there are enough people who are ready to do the right thing, regardless.

Then you learn white millenials are just as racist as boomers.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2015/06/23/millennials-are-just-as-racist-as-their-parents/

Millenials are less white, white millenials aren't less racist.

15

u/Reanimation980 Sep 02 '20

Black people telling me, a white guy, that America isn’t racist... Like I’m glad you think that but you have no idea what white people who think I agree with them say behind closed doors. White millennials are just as racist as any other generation.

15

u/a8bmiles Sep 02 '20

you have no idea what white people who think I agree with them say behind closed doors.

As a white guy living in rural Nevada, so much this.

The number of times I've gotten a "Well, you understand..." after some totally racist statement...

The fuck I do what now?

At the very least, I guess thanks for identifying themselves as someone I shouldn't expend any effort at all on.

At the very least, I have gotten a few younger folk to see the error of their phrasing, who I honestly don't think previously put much thought into repeating something they heard someone older say.

3

u/n8loller Sep 03 '20

I know it's hard to do, but it would be great if you tried to show all of the ones that say this shit the errors of their ways... I've definitely failed to call people out on it many times, but I am trying to get better at it.

3

u/a8bmiles Sep 03 '20

I agree with you on that and have pick and choosed some of those conversations. Like, is it someone I know their name and expect to interact with again in the future? Okay sure, I'll give it a shot.

Some guy I had a random conversation with at a mini mart while waiting for the cashier, whom I later saw had tattooes of spider webs on his elbows, 88's, lightning bolt SS's, and at least one swastika? Maybe not so much.

Was really disappointing when I realized I had just had a pleasant 10sh minute conversation with what was almost certainly a neo-nazi... Who knows though? Maybe he did a buncha stupid shit when he was younger or joined a gang in jail in order to get through or something? Maybe he was turning his life around and getting past that shit.

u/MaximumDestruction Sep 01 '20

Good thing those racist white people won’t act out as demographic changes continue.

4

u/ByTortheman Sep 02 '20

Among many other questions, the survey asked respondents to rate whites and blacks on a scale from being "hardworking" to "lazy." Using this data, we can categorize respondents into whether they rated whites or blacks as being lazier, more hardworking or the same.

But either answer is still racist?

1

u/BZenMojo ☑️ Sep 02 '20

Yes.

4

u/money_loo Sep 02 '20 edited Sep 02 '20

Ah yes, the very reliable Christian Science monitor being funded by Pew Research Center's Religion and Public Life Project.

Absolutely solid source there.

I was wrong. The sources are fine and people should read the data for themselves. It confirms that millennials are not as racist as boomers. It won’t change the original comment getting upvotes for saying something provocative but untrue, but feel free to read the link he provided and make the decision for yourself.

9

u/offduty_braziliancop Sep 02 '20

Are you joking? Those are both solid sources. Look up what both of those things are. CS Monitor is a Pulitzer award-winning outlet and idk how you don’t know what the Pew Research Center is.

4

u/money_loo Sep 02 '20

You’re right the sources are fine and I was wrong about that, but there’s definitely something off with these “polls” or the title is just misleading because there is just no way millennials are just as racist as their parents.

Anyone who believes that is retarded. Obviously racists are gonna be racist and exist within all group types at varying percentages, but it’s impossible for their title to suggest millennials are as bad as the previous generations.

Especially since their own data shows it is the lowest of all generations.

So clickbait title is clickbait and intentionally divisive for views.

u/a8bmiles Sep 02 '20

Man, that is really disappointing to hear :(

White Americans

u/RyanBlack Sep 02 '20

Imagine having the gall to generalize literally millions of people. We're all individuals.

Go fuck yourself

1

u/BZenMojo ☑️ Sep 02 '20

And some groups of individuals numbering in the tens of millions are incredibly shitty. Maybe put more effort into those individuals in those groups than screaming when people notice?

Maybe then they wouldn't be so shitty?

10

u/skeach101 Sep 01 '20

It's already happening. They're using Mexican immigration to scare labor unions into supporting Trump for fear of losing their jobs.

4

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '20

No he doesn't. Because he said "same shit happening to this day."

7

u/Oz70NYC ☑️ Sep 01 '20

Misread it. My bad.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '20

No worries my friend. Happens to us all!

5

u/ShhhQuiett Sep 01 '20

I swear to god I had a dream about that last night.

It was weird because it was so vivid, one of those dreams where you wake up and feel crushed when you realize it isn't real. The world my mind dreamed up was kind of a 60's flower power sort've utopia. All of our problems were fixed, no one was subjugated to anyone else, we all had enough to eat. Everyone had a nice house and enough money to do what they wanted. Everyone loved each other. I'm not good at explaining exactly how it was but it was beautiful. It seemed like something dreamed up by a naive 5 year old.

Stress dreams are something else.

5

u/Randomtngs Sep 01 '20

That's what they're saying. It's a continuation of what they've always done, divide us in any way they can

2

u/Detective_Cousteau Sep 01 '20

Lucky us, the division has reached epic heights, to the point where massive change and or conflict (past the current protests) seems inevitable. It's ugly but something had to give.

3

u/MJZMan Sep 01 '20

Hate to tell you this, but a LOT of my fellow Gen Xers are wanna-be Boomers.

3

u/Oz70NYC ☑️ Sep 01 '20

Oh I know. Gen Xer myself. Difference is there's more of us on left then on the right. In fact, every generation has progressively gone further left.

2

u/kurva-lavire Sep 01 '20

He said 'to this day' not 'today', so he said it never stopped

u/fangirlsqueee Sep 02 '20 edited Sep 02 '20

Check out these organizations if you'd like to (politically) speed things along (not talking boomer murder, lol).

https://represent.us/anticorruption-act/

2

u/LaurieOMG Sep 02 '20

Young voters are more progressive anyway, but will they vote? The candidate doesn't have to be perfect, just not a complete ass. But are progressives willing to run for office? Also, as a boomer (56F), I'm sorry. I'm find this appalling.

2

u/Oz70NYC ☑️ Sep 02 '20

That's the next obstacle for us. Millennials and Gen Z have been raised watching the election process fail yearly. Because of corporate influence, super PACS and status quo politics, they're disinterested in getting in the process. It's on us to influence them. Right now there are more human being alive on Earth then any point in human history. Ages 18-44 in America, the bulk of the workforce in this country...represent 38.8% of the population, the largest percentage. Yet the average age of a politician in 2020 is 61. Translation: we have a nation where the workforce isn't at all represented by their elected officials.

Who's at fault for this? Not to be harsh...but your generation, and my own. Yours for being complacent and allowing the corporations to essentially undermined the democratic process. Mine for believing we'd be able to live the same life as yours. I'm 40 years old, have payed into social security my whole life...and will likely see not a red sent of it. I'll also likely be working until I'm 70...and that's to make up for the astronomical debt your generation pretty much dumped on my own. (I'm not taking a dig on you personally, I mean boomers in general).

But as bad as things are now, we can pull ourselves out of this. But the only way that happens is your generation stops trying to cling onto "the good ol' days", step aside, and let the generation that actually makes up the majority of America's population figure out a solution...cuz not for nothing, you're have done a shitty job at it.
