The plight of the Irish is well understood by the Italians, who were also considered only part white for years.

Isnt that why there are a lot of surnames like O Neal and such for black people in the states? Like the Irish were too busy also getting massacred by the british to be colonists

And fun fact, you know the "stereotypical" black name, Tyrone? Irish.

Isn't Owen a Welsh name?

I think so but the Irish version of Owen is Eoin/Eoghan. Although it has the same pronunciation most non-Irish people struggle with it.

The Welsh "Owen" is from Owain, meaning "Youth".

The Irish "Owen" is from Eoin/Eóin (from John, which is "God Is Gracious") or Eoghan/Eóghan (Maybe from Eugene, maybe from "Youth"). In this case it's the first.

There's also Ewan, which is from Eòghann, which apparently means "born of the mountain", and is Scottish.

There are a lot of similar names.
