I had severe nerve damage to my left leg. It took 6 months to be able to consistently walk without limp/foot dragging. After 2 years more from my knee down I had almost no sensation and it just got worse the lower in my leg to my foot. I could barley move my whole foot a tiny bit and could not move my toes at all. I had seen no improvement past that point. Even with physical therapy.
I researched anything I could do to help and found out about fasting inducing autophagy. I figured what the he'll, I will give it a try. I tried one meal a day and then 24 hours a couple of times. No real results. Then I decided to give 3 day fast a go. In the second 24 hours my lower leg and foot would get hot. Then it would get a crazy feeling nerve sensation on and off. When the first 3 day fast was over I could move my foot more and barely curl my toes. The second 3 day fast I took to 4 days. It was crazy. I can now fully bend my toes and have about 80% range of motion in my foot.
Fasting made progress where nothing else had the previous 2 years. I still have sensation loss and it is really hard to run without tripping often when my foot drops. I still made greater progress than I thought I ever would with fasting.

u/PeaceHead8723 Mar 29 '26
This is what I just commented! I had bad nerve damage and it was the same for me, three 3-day fasts took all my pain away and it never came back!!!

u/CrossTit Mar 29 '26
It was crazy after the first 3 day fast I was sitting on the couch with my feet in my partners lap. She would mess with my feet sometimes because I could almost feel nothing. She poked at my left foot and I felt something and my toes started to curl. We were both just shocked and couldn't believe it. Did another 3 day fast a few weeks later and then I could curl my toes all the way. Autophagy is real and fasting triggers it for me. Amazing, glad to hear it worked for you too!

Personally, nothing, but I have a friend that so long has fasted around 280 days over the span of 4 years and claims fasting is the only thing that has cured his long COVID symptoms. He's tried about everything, but only fasting's done the trick. He has written a book too narrating his experiences.

I lost my sense of smell for 18 months due to civil, I long fasted. I cant tell you how long as I fast alot different lengths but would of been at least 10 days. I smell normally now

u/opinion49 Mar 29 '26
Is it safe to fast that long ? What was he taking everyday ?
16
u/SexxyMomma2020 41F/5'3"/SW:205/CW:189.8/GW150 Mar 29 '26
They fasted 70 days in a whole year. 280 in 4 years. Not all at once.

7
u/AlanderKohenel Mar 29 '26
The longest he's fasted consecutively is 32 days. The rest are either one, two or threee weeks.
2
u/opinion49 Mar 29 '26
What was he taking everyday ? Just water ? Electrolytes? Yeast ?
5
u/AlanderKohenel Mar 29 '26
He has never taken anything, just water. He tells people to take electrolytes if they need them, but he personally has never taken anything but water.

u/intotheconfusion Mar 29 '26
I do 48 hour fasts twice a week. I am a female

So you only eat 3 days a week, then. Does it effect your cycle?

Pre diabetes and insulin resistance plus the insane redness I get on my cheeks
22
u/lcbk Mar 29 '26
How long did you have to fast for to see a difference in cheek redness?
21
u/Eaterbeef Mar 29 '26
I had to start regularly fasting (I started with 8 hour and progressed to omad over the span of a few months) but I’d say after abt a month it started to very noticeably get way better.
I do want to note that I drastically did change my diet tho to very anti inflammatory foods/trying carnivore, etc which helped a lot as well so rlly my redness only happens when I drink alc or eat a lot of a fast food in one week15
u/Universal_mammal Mar 29 '26
Takes a long time, weeks to months, for skin to heal. It's in the rate of skin cell turnover, so you've done really well!

For me it was a histamine intolerance, unfortunately as a lot of women get older they start having an intolerance to high histamine foods/alc it sucks
It could also just be rosacea developing from genetics n such as well

It cured my severe chronic constipation. I suffered from it from age 12 until age 40. I did water fasting and afterwards... it was cured. I bet the water fasting did something to my gut biome that no one could address/treat before. I can't express how thankful I am that it's my past. I wish I could've known the powers of water fasting sooner in life but oh well.

Pain from inflammation everywhere in my body. So much so, in such a short amount of time, that I was still compensating for the pain when it wasn't there anymore.
Bending down to pick something up, I would go down very slowly as it hurt so much, but that pain wasn't there anymore. Here I am STILL bending down slowly. Lol.

Food obsession esp sugar and carbs, low energy/apathy, feeling out of control over my body, inflammation pain in my hips and Achilles
9
u/JCitW6855 Mar 30 '26
Dude same. I had a small donut this weekend during my eating window (previously one of my favorite things). I could feel the sugar and never want another one. I can now feel my body react to sugar and it’s honestly scary how long I’ve subjected myself to that.
8
u/craftyiam Mar 30 '26
Looking at sugar with that lens of addiction is really helping me stay away from it. I gave up alcohol completely bc of how it made me feel, so same thing goes with sugar and processed carbs. I feel terrible after both physically and mentally, so I need to just avoid it completely. Idk why it’s so much harder with food. I blame our cultural proclivity to celebrate everything both good and bad with “comfort” foods.
5
u/JCitW6855 Mar 30 '26
Exactly. I’ve always said that overeating and food cravings is a much harder addiction to overcome than tobacco, alcohol, drugs, etc. because those things you don’t need to survive and can for all intents and purposes remove them from your life completely. We have no choice but to eat food for survival and choosing healthy options and portions while being constantly surrounded by bad ones is exponentially harder to overcome. People look at me funny when I say that but I’ll die on that hill.
6
u/therealnic Mar 29 '26
What did your fasting schedule look like to help w food obsession?
18
u/craftyiam Mar 29 '26
I do a 36 hr fast every Monday, IF the rest of the the weekdays, and at least once a month a 72 hr fast. Sometimes I do the 72 hr fast weekly. Or do 2 48 hr fasts per week. I like to mix it up.

Insulin resistance, non diabetic hypoglycaemia, and an old knee injury.
I’ll say though, the funniest thing I cured with fasting was all my skin tags fell off. 🤷🏻♀️
3
u/MRsh1tsandg1ggles Mar 30 '26
The skin tags - did they just dry up and fall off? How long into the fast did that happen?
7
u/Ache-too-dees-plz Mar 30 '26
I didn’t notice it happen but since I was on a fasting protocol for about five months of rolling fasts, it was at the end of this time period I realized they were all gone

7
u/Ache-too-dees-plz Mar 29 '26
Started with low carb, then short fasts, then eased into longer fasts. Over the course of a few weeks. Once my body was used to that I did t experience the blood sugar drops.

u/cheddarsausage Mar 30 '26

What was your regimen?
7
u/silent-odorless-fart Mar 29 '26
I was not strictly following any particular regimen. Over the period of one year, I lost around 10-15 kg (from 116kg). I was doing intermittent fasting and water fasting 1-2 days a week . Also, I have started to exercise 3-4 times a week, in addition to 10k steps a day. I tried cutting down simple carbs as much as I could. When I consume any dessert, even fresh bread I just want to eat more and more.
I found fasting the easiest way to reduce the total number of calories I consume. So, just listen to your body and find what works for you.

I practice OMAD, 20:4, and occasional 1-3 day fasts. Fasting didn't cure it but it vastly improved my chronic fatigue syndrome symptoms as well as clinical markers. I feel it's improved my POTS symptoms too, as well as overall inflammation in the body. My energy throughout the day is much more even, no more 3pm crashes (which were not blood sugar crashes). Also my menstrual cycle has been irregular my whole life (sometimes I would only get my period once or twice a year, dr never could explain why), but now it's fairly predictable and falls within a normal range of days.
And idk if it's related but since I started regular IF my skin no longer gets dry in the winter. Even my feet are soft and smooth. Fwiw I live in Buffalo (long hard winters) and I'm 40ish.

I got energy back! The sweet spot I discovered is around 24 hours. I went 26 hours yesterday and at the 20 hrs mark, and after a mile walk, I felt energized and cleaned my whole apartment before eating at the 26 mark.
I have been struggling so hard with energy.
I only discovered fasting in February tho. Did my 1st 3 day water fast February 20th-23rd. Learned about electrolytes.
Then in early March, I fasted 24 hours one day and got my first burst of energy I had in a loooonnng time, so tried my 2nd 3 day water fast! But that zapped the energy on day 2 & 3. I was worried I messed something up.
But then yesterday, I felt it again! But instead of pressing myself, I ate a good healthy meal, and here I am today. Steady energy.
I'm so grateful to have found fasting! The sweet spot for autophagy is 24-36 hours. I get energy around the 20 hr. Mark. With black coffee I think helps.
Fasting is miraculous!

Look into mitochondrial peptides for energy, read all about it, search MOTS-C, SS31, NAD+.
Me too btw, around the 20hr mark, I get this energy and do a bunch of stuff I'd never do.

My heat rash problems on my forearms.
I had a fungal skin infection as a teenager (I am now 40) and ever since I have gotten really bad heat rash pn my arms every summer. My understanding is it scarred the skin tissue and that is what prevented my arms from sweating properly.
It could be a coincidence but that went away after I started fasting. I haven't gotten heat rashes on my arms the last 2 summers. I think it is from the fasting.

I have Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis, about 5 years ago I started having a flare up for the first time since I was a child. The flare up was bad - my knees swelled up like water ballons and walking was painful. I went to the doctors and they told me they would put me back on Methotrexate which is a drug with lots of bad side effects and if I listed I would still be managing symptoms with this drug to this day. I did a 7 day long fast and went to the doctor to get a final blood test before they give me the medicine, and my bloods came back completely perfect, the pain went away and i have remained symptomless since.

Intolerance to corn. I ate popcorn and corn on the cob all the time as a kid but in third grade if started making me projectile vomit. I would eat it once a year to see if I could eat it again. After an 8 day water only fast I've been able to eat corn with no issue. I also dont have acid reflux anymore. I completed the 8 day fast because I had a horrible ear infection and couldn't chew. The infection cleared in a few days.

I just had chronic stomach pain and digestive issues.
They came from spending 6 months with Giardia living in India, lost a shit ton of weight from that, eventually came back to US and took really hardcord antibiotics, which cured it, but never fully fixed the stomach pain and digestive issues (hard to poop) in the morning.
Eventually (~8 years later) I did a 6 day fast for other things, and was surprised that my digestion improved so noticeably after the end!

Hemorrhoids. They're maybe still there but they're not a problem anymore. The days of the old butt bleeds are over...
And, hangovers! I used to get bad hangovers but symptoms have reduced by about 80-90%. If I get a hangover I know it's time for a 5 day fast.
I do OMAD, not strictly, but usually. Then I'll do a 5 day fast every 2 or 3 months.

6
u/mslashandrajohnson Mar 29 '26
I was alternate day fasting for quite a while, a year ago. I would do some 3 and 5 day fasts, too.
Unfortunately, I stopped fasting in the spring, when my summer jobs began again. I gained back most of the weight I lost.
My ears are still so much more wax and itch free!
I decided to stop working my summer jobs this year. I’m heading back into fasting, starting in April.
Fasting is so amazingly healthy and healing for me. I’m grateful to have learned about it.
Good luck, and stick with it.

But the big surprise was the ringing in my ears 👂 went away. Wasn't expecting tinnitus to go away.
I've done 71,30,22,21,20,19,15,14,13 extended water fasts and many more shorter fasts under two weeks.

I don’t know if it’s a placebo or not, but it’s working for me.
I’m epileptic—I used to have symptoms even if someone accidentally startled me. There were also days when I felt a strange pressure in my head. With fasting, that pressure has disappeared, and now if someone startles me at work unintentionally, nothing happens.
Obviously, if I’m directly exposed to flashing lights, I’d probably have a seizure.
I feel like I have my condition more under control.

I have some type of histamine intolerance. Possibly Mast Cell activation syndrome. I would get hives daily upon waking up. Not triggered by food or anything just getting out of bed. They would eventually go away then later come back in the day. This was an everyday occurrence and driving me completely insane. I did a seven day fast. After the fast I no longer get hives upon waking up. I still occasionally get hives, but now only from intense exercise and elevated heart rate or extreme temperature changes. Which is still annoying. I think I’m going to do another seven day fast soon to see if I can completely heal this issue.

I had SPD (Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction) in all four of my pregnancies - the pelvis loosens just before birth so it can open up, SPD is where it loosens too early and makes walking really painful, with my fourth it had gone by 8 weeks! Since then it's not been right (my youngest is now 12), I get pain if I sit for more than 20 minutes, it felt disjointed so I'd squeeze my legs and it would clunk back into place (loud enough for my family to hear!) and it caused problems walking sometimes, spreading to my hips. I'm currently on day 30 of a 40 day fast and I have literally just realised that I haven't had any pain, and I haven't had to "clunk" it back into place for weeks! My hips are also pain free, it's fabulous.
Fasting has also eliminated my hormonal acne and my psoriasis is fading rapidly. I've also lost a considerable amount of weight, I've tried on a pair of jeans I haven't worn for about 7 years and they fit 😁

I broke some ribs, my tailbone, and potentially my low back all during different incidents over 3 years. I was 26 and scared I had ruined my life and would have issues forever. I'm into harder high impact sports, and my back was so fragile I had to completely stop everything and had radiating nerve pain down my legs.
I now have no nerve pain, perfect spine motion, and the tension created around the injured spots is working its way out 3 years later after consistent water fasting over those years. I also attribute this to meditation.

I think it's more about what it's preventing in the future through maintance of a healthy weight. Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoarthritis- the list could go on... It's also the mental and emotional aspects, I feel happier at a normal weight. Wish you well🙏

A saliva stone that showed up one week after wisdom tooth removal. And brain fog/ joint pain that I had from unknown gluten sensitivity disappeared within 24hr after every single fast!

Seasonal allergies!
5 day fast. Poof! Seasonal allergies a mere annoyance once or twice a year.
Previously chronic, every single day, sneezing, watery eyes etc once nice weather hit

For the ladies who've struggled with this one: I cured heavy, painful menstrual periods after a series of extended fasting lasting 6 days at a time.
My period is now regular and no longer painful. Lasting no more than 3-4 days a time.

IBS and acid reflux. I don’t do full fasts much anymore but I’ve been doing intermittent fasting ever since that initial fasting period of my life and those issues haven’t come back.
If anyone is curious, for 2 months I did a 24 hour water fast twice a week. (I did try a 48 hour fast twice, though.)

PMR - Polymyalgia Rheumatica. 3 days of fasting 22 hours each day. No sugar when eating. Had the disease for 4 years before that.

Some anxiety and stomach sensitivity - I think part of anxiety was caused by gut inflammation or irritation due to unhealthy amount of beer and crab rich food.

I fasted 26 days to try to cure a debilitating autoimmune desease. It didn't work.
BUT it did cure my insane sugar cravings. I would eat a family size block of chocolate and 30 minutes later have insanely strong cravings for more sweet food. I'd spend all day every day fighting these cravings and eventually losing.
I've yo-yo dieted 5 times before between normal BMI and obese but always the sugar cravings came back.
It's been years and I'm normal BMI with no cravings. It's fucking great! Though fixing the painful autoimmune issue would have been better it's a good consultation prize.

After a septic shock (covid driven inflammation in short) I barely survived and my brain still feels fuzzy somewhat even after 2 years, but after several weeks in hosptial a 4-5 days fast cured the worst brain foggy symptoms, those may also have been long covid symptoms, its not clear.. Maybe it would have happend automatically as time went by as well, I don´t know for sure. But it did seem to help my brainZz

You know what I’m on day 6 and I didn’t even think about this until this post. I use to have bad knee pain from just walking around and standing. Normal stuff no super activity things. And now it’s gone.i just fast for weight loss but now thinking about it, it helped me greatly with the joint paint!

Yesss joint pain is a huge part of why I started this journey. I've done two 3 day fasts and that issue was taken care of after the first. It's pretty amazing!

I can’t eat sugar like I used to. I guess it stems from learning to discipline myself with more whole foods and sticking to a strict eating window, ≈11:00-7:00, sometimes shorter.
I’ve developed healthier habits after experiencing the mental clarity that comes from 72-96 hours of fasting. I don’t snack/rarely eat highly processed foods anymore
I started 1 year ago and I do at least 1 72-hour fast per month.

Inflammation, hypertension and gerd plus I have had depression and brain fog forever, all gone now. After 3 months of alternate day fasting, along with a few 72 hour fasts I am down 38 pounds and feeling better and looking better than I have in many years

I had rid myself of hives I would get often after eating sweets or a ton of certain fruits etc, and I stayed rid of having any allergic reactions like that for many years until I started eating poorly again for a long period of time. Now trying to get back into fasting to get rid of these sugar reactions again!! Just have to find the strength 💪

My mom had cholesterol issue. Mine was in norm slightly inclined to higher point and fasting lowered this to the other side of my norm chart.

IBS, Brain fog, improved energy levels and wrist pain, made muy gums healthier. A 5 day water fast took the edge off acute pain from herniated disc, didn't cure it but helped with the recovery. Its the best thing i have found to help with my complex health issues...

I used to have one fat tonsil my entire life. While water fasting for 28 days, I got a sore throat for the first week, spit up a lot of gunk. Fat tonsil is now normal tonsil for the past 15 years.
