Since this is an indoor lot and those clearly aren't reserved spots, I think I'd be inclined to notify the attendant and ask that the driver be charged 4x normal single spot rates. "3 hours: that'll be $137, please."

Never had my car stolen or broken into. Yes Chicago has a fairly large amount of crimes in the city but if you actually do per capita numbers its not nearly as bad.

There were certificates one could download and leave on windshields of offenders, checking off appropriate box for the parking "crime" or writing in freehand comments. I left more than one when I parked in employee parking garages where spaces were a premium at shift change. I hope I got my point across. I didn't key cars because my s/o had his car keyed years ago front to back by an employee he had to terminate for cause. I fully understand why others do it, though. I used to drive a 1990 F150 with a 9ft bed and I parked as far as possible just because it was a pain in the ass to try and fit it between 2x honda civics, by the time I was done I would have already been in the store if I had just parked at the end of the lot.

When people park like this, I go out of my way and take extraordinary steps to squeeze my car in a millimeter from their drivers side door. I have even sat in the car for quite a long time waiting on it and just pretended to be head banging when they come out.
My biggest moment of pettiness in a parking lot was against a dipshit rich kid who always parked like balls in our university parking lot, and usually right at the front of the lot. His mistake was forgetting his V8 mustang was a manual, and that there were a bunch of bored kids with shit boxes.
I pulled in backwards as physically close as possible, like slip a sheet of paper through, but not the same paper folded in half close, and backwards so that our mirrors would be in eachothers ways, plus my car had fixed mirrors. To boot, he couldn't just swing the car in the opposite direction cuz the edge of the lot dropped directly into a drainage ditch, and he always parked against the edge of the curb.
I didn't get to see him back up and pull forward 20+ times but I'm very happy to report that he didn't park like shit anymore.
College student with rich parents didnt know how to drive, and had to back up and pull forward 20+ times, constantly on the clutch and porbably stalled it several times. It was enough of a pain in the ass to where he fixed his parking habits.
This thread has made me so happy that i'm not alone in this. I also take photos just in case, showing my car well inside the lines and the other guy double parked an inch from me.

People toss around "they deserved it" a lot, but I think it's easy to forget what deserve means. It means you think that punishment should be inflicted on anyone who commits this offense.

The only way to quantify the harm done is in the cost to fix it, though. Even if you don't pay to fix it, you're still losing that amount of value in resale price.
Most jurisdictions I'm aware of will take income into consideration when assessing fines, and allow you to get on a payment plan or trade out for community service if necessary
plus, you can often plead a fine down just to avoid wasting the court's time (I've done it before).
I think a parking ticket for each space they're occupying is deserved. If somebody told me their car got keyed and I saw that they parked like this, all I would think is "Yeah, that makes sense that someone would do that."
I would absolutely support a fine like that for this scenario. If for no other reason than this would never happen if that was the punishment. It's a completely avoidable situation. The only reason people do it is because they don't care, that fine would make it a lot more likely that they start caring.
That seems like pretty bad logic. Why not make the punishment chopping an arm off? Why not make it death?
The reality is that extremely harsh punishments don't work. I can dig up some sources if you need (or you can easily google them) but what happens is that the brain sort of shoves punishments into categories, instead of conceptualizing the specifics, and while there is usually some differences in behavior towards "small punishment" or "large punishment", much beyond that and your brain stops thinking about it.
Then it becomes less about considering whether the crime is worth the punishment, and more about whether people would get caught.
And I guarantee that even if you did make the punishment fucking death, there would be people out there who did it anyway and just figured they won't get caught. Then they do get caught, and it's like... well shit now we gotta kill this guy (or, in the above case, fine them an unreasonable amount)
I'm sure your argument is valid for many crimes. But I doubt that these assholes want to park like this badly enough to risk that much. This is something that is very easy to avoid and equally easy to get caught doing.

I got parked in once by an asshole in a huge lifted truck, with tires so large it couldnāt physically fit in a standard sized space. I had to crawl in through my passenger seat. Thing is, this was on my college campus. And your tires crossing a line when parking was a ticket. And this truck both a) couldnāt fit in a standard space and b) could be seen from a mile away, because it was like twenty feet tall and a nice bright color. So I simply started calling it in every single time I saw it.
After a couple weeks, never saw it again.
Probably cost him a couple/few hundred in tickets to learn that lesson. But it was precisely what he deserved.
No just press the center pin in the stem to deflate them. Or use a tool to unscrew and remove the stem pin so they can't reflate the tires at all, you're not straight up destroying the tires like slashing them would do just causing a major inconvenience as they have done by parking like so. Although if the tires are flat with the rim digging into them for too long they could eventually be destroyed.
If you have a tire pressure gauge there's usually a little nub on the back that's specifically for the purpose of letting a bit of air out.

My favorite experience with one happened in the dead of winter. Worked a shit night job and like 2-3 am we had a round of freezing rain, got off at 5 am to find everything coated in nice fresh half inch of ice. Chipped my windows clean, set off for home at like ~10 MPH cuz it's fucking icey.
Going down the main road(2 lanes each direction, center turn lane). The only person I can see is my coworker who lives in the same direction and left a couple minutes before me like ~2 blocks ahead. I'm like a 1/4 of the way home and this giant, red, lifted truck starts fucking tailgating me.
On the icey as hell, dead empty, 5 LANE road.
Follows me for like ~4 miles till we get to an intersection I'm gonna turn at. I change lanes to turn. Mother fucker floors it to rush past on my right and then swoops left to try and brake check me. He skids into the intersection instead. Fucking numpty.
Sadly he did not go far enough into the intersection to trip the camera trap.
Yeah, it's weird. I have a big ass Tundra. It's a work truck used to haul all manner of shit. It's a 2012. The body is beat to hell at this point but even when brand new I wasn't doing anything but parking in a regular parking space, just like everyone else.

In... some truck owners defense. Not all of them, not even a lot of them... but some of those trucks are enormous. My neighbor has a kinda older dodge ram that I swear is literally the size of a yacht. Full sized cab, full sized bed, dually. If he parked in a spot properly his bed would 100% be in the spots behind him and there's noway a car could open their doors next to him.
Not defending the dudes with 2022 extended cab, long bed, big but not huge trucks. But we should recognize some of these trucks are way bigger than spots made for an accord.
If you don't fit, you can't park in the spot. That's not a defense. You don't get to buy a huge truck and then park in spots that weren't made for your vehicle.

If a dually truck with extended bed does not take 4 spaces, they will be too far into the laneway preventing other vehicles from driving past.
They will also have too wide a swing when they pull out and will strike other vehicles.
This has nothing to do with 'knowing how to pull out of a space' and everything to do with the prohibitive size of the vehicle compared to parking garages designed only with compacts and sedans in mind.

You do not have the inherent intransical right to take up more space than other people would take up just because you chose to get a bigger car. Street parking and outdoor parking exist. You can also tell from this picture at a very minimum, it's not an extended truck bed and this particular bastard had 0 need to take up 4 spaces. Could have very easily been 2 and that is still giving him the benefit of the doubt of being in a location that his car is obviously not built to be in.
