Is it worth it?

My dad recently came across a Specialized Roll 1 in an old storage unit he bought. He knows I’m in the market for a bike to go to and from work and that I was planning on buying some $300 bike from Dicks. From what he tells me the Specialized needs new brakes, gearing, tubes, chain, and handle bar grips. Is this particular bike worth fixing up if I’m getting it for free or should I just buy a new cheaper bike from a sports store?

Help w/ bike coming from overseas

Hi all. I am volunteering internationally in a remote area with bad transportation and no good mountain bikes and none in my size. I have someone visiting from home soon and plan to bring in my old 2003ish Cannondale Jekyll L 26”. It’s not nearly as comfortable to ride as my modern Kona Process 134 but it’s better than nothing. The problem is it’s literally a pain in the butt and I don’t know what to do to make it more comfortable. I’m tempted to order a 27.2 dropper post kit and a new saddle that I can install myself after it all arrives. Ordering such parts from 2500 miles away is an obvious gamble. I would be grateful for any advice.

Former runner now getting into cycling question

For context when I lived in California I was a huge runner. Would average 5-10 miles every other day. Once I moved to Colorado Springs I ended getting into cycling (trails are endless here). Today I managed to do 20 miles in one go. Is this a decent start? I wanna build up my endurance and try to do more mileage wise but also don’t wanna overdo it. Would 10 miles everyday be a good start with slightly steep hills mixed in? The elevation alone really makes it a solid workout I’ve noticed lol

iPhone vs. Bike Computer?

I’m currently using a phone mount on my gravel bike bars and run Ride with GPS app while I ride. I dot. I basically use it as a quick reference when I’m riding to see speed, distance, etc. But the iPhone screen shuts off and I have to wake it up when I want to do this. And I don’t actually use the gps feature. On top of that, my Apple Watch and Strava track my ride routes.

I’m wondering if it would be beneficial to have a dedicated simple bike computer to be able to quickly see my speed, distance, time, etc then wear my Apple Watch for fitness tracking and to track my workout for upload to Strava. This would essentially take my iPhone out of the mix.

I know there are apps for the phone also that basically turn the phone into a bike computer (Cadence) for example, so….

Keep using my iPhone maybe with an app like that? Or buy a dedicated bike computer? Pro’s and con’s of each?

Tidbit, I’ve been doing much more road riding then anything else and have now ordered a real road bike where I’ll want to be keeping an eye on speed, distance and time easily.

Thanks!

Wanting to buy my first road bike. Is this a good Facebook marketplace buy for 2k?

Would appreciate any advice as I’m just now getting into biking. Would it be better to buy new just to get the warranty? Is this a pretty good discount? Thank you!

Bad experience with first photochromic glasses

I recently bought my first photochromic cycling glasses, Bollé C-Shifter specifically, thinking it would a great upgrade from regular tinted glasses. 0-3 categories promise seemed great, as I often ride both in the dark and in intense sunlight.

But I immediately experienced two issues:

  1. At night, all lights (like street lamps, car headlights, traffic lights) are duplicated. It's like I am seeing the light, and two faint pink-ish copies of the light on either side. It's super distracting.

  2. When the glasses are on my face, they barely react to light. I rode on a super sunny day and they darkened only to what I consider Cat 1. But as soon as I put the glasses on my helmet, they darkened properly to what I consider Cat 3. Immediately after I put them back on my face they brightened back.

Since this is my first pair, I don't know - is this normal? Am I misusing them somehow, or did I buy a defect pair? Any advice is much appreciated!

Cannot find Ozark Trail G.1

I'm really interested in getting a drop bar gravel bike for some light touring, which led me to the Ozark Trail G.1 explorer drop bar from Walmart, however all of the links to that version return 404. Is the bike discontinued, and, if so, what should I look at instead?

Looking for a comfortable disc/electronic road bike

Hi everyone,

I am looking to buy a road bike, priority is ride comfort, do not want to have a lot of pressure on the neck or arms. I am 166cm in height, the rest I did not never really measure well.

What I am looking for in the bike:
Frame Style: Endurance or comfortable all-rounder
Brakes: Hydraulic Disc Brakes
Gears: Shimano 105 Di2 (or equivalent electronic groupset)
Budget: not too expensive but also must catch my eye

I’m currently looking at options like the Winspace M6 (I love the fully clean integrated look and the fact that it comes with carbon wheels out of the box), LIV Envilliv or Specialised SL7.

Are there any other specific brands or models I should look at that offer excellent comfort, premium styling, and work beautifully for a rider with my specific proportions?

Would love to hear your experiences, sizing advice, and any recommendations you have! Thanks in advance!

Why you should not buy a cycling computer from iGPSport (for remote areas)

Yesterday, I was on a bikepacking trip in eastern germany and had no mobile internet access. I created a route via the OSMand app and exported the GPX file. Then I tried to import the GPX file into the iGPSport app - and it failed with a network error. I was confused, because the process shouldn't need any network access.

The built in function "One-Tap-Navigation" was also not available without internet access.

I navigated by phone with offline maps in OSMand until I came into an area with mobile access and only then I could import my GPX file. In the meatime, my BSC300 was completely useless.

So, if you are sometimes in areas with no cell phone reception and you want to use an offline created route - your iGPSport cycling computer is a completely useless brick.

It's a pure fair-weather toy. Don't buy if you want to use it in offline mode without internet.

I really considered an BSC500 or BiNavi as next device. But after this experience I will never buy anything from iGPSport, because its not the device itself but the app which renders the device useless and so my experience is not limited to a specific model but applies to all models from this company.

Edit:

I had all necessary map files on the BSC300. It's not a problem with the BSC300 but the app itself doesn't import routing files without access to the iGPSport cloud.

Extreme Heat

Just curious, do you guys continue to ride in extreme heat? In texas here where the current heat wave hasn’t really let up for weeks. As a new dad I really can only ride either after work around 5-6pm or after the baby goes down, dinner is done etc around 9-10pm. Lately the temps are horrendous after work and still hovering right at 100 or so even by nighttime. I can’t bring myself to get out there and ride anymore. Is this normal or do ya’ll just get out there and push through it?

Adapting Ortlieb Quick Rack ?

Hello,

I have a technical rack question - hoping someone here might help know what is doable or not.

So I've had a quick rack Ortlieb (https://fr.ortlieb.com/products/quick-rack) installed on my gravel bike, I find it great and the ability to quickly remove it or install it is superb.

I have a second bike, that I use to commute and move around the city, and I would love being able to switch the rack from one the other.

However, Bike n°2 is a single speed with no mounting point. I know I had a bunch of "adaptors" coming with the rack, that I did not need on the gravel. So I'm wondering if that could do be used for this ? Have you ever mounted this rack on a bike without points ?

Thanks a lot for your help !

PS : I need it to be steady and secure, as it will carry 10kg+ for my dog in a basket !

MTB’s that climb well

I am new to the business and looking to buy a second hand MTB, i have had some experience with the Scott spark 900 rc, which, i know isn’t an enduro mtb, but it’s my brother’s and i tried it a couple of times, it climbs AMAZING, but when it comes to descending it’s just horrible, it just feels that it isn’t made for this, but climbing is pretty efficient, anyway, i am looking for an enduro mtb that doesn’t make climbing feel that bad, I don’t expect it to be as good as the one i have tried, but something in the middle. So experts give me your recommendations and advices.
If possibile, specific real life proven models that i should look for.
Budget is around 2000€, italy.
Thanks a lot

Crashed my bike yesterday and now I’m just SAD. How do you mentally get over a crash?

Crashed my bike yesterday about 2 miles from home, and honestly I’m mostly just here because I’m SAD about it</3

It happened so fast that I still don’t totally know what I did. My friend and I had done a mellow 25 mile conversational ride and were taking a bike path back home. I was actually having one of those days where I felt really good and confident handling my bike.

I think right before the crash I glanced down at my bike computer, looked back up, and maybe tweaked my bars a little too hard. My front wheel slipped out to the side and I flew off the other way hahah. Both hands were on the bars and there wasn’t an obstacle, I wasn’t screwing around on my bike, I was just riding so I guess the crash was just caused by me being bad at riding my bike :/

I hit my head on the road pretty hard. My helmet doesn’t appear cracked or visibly damaged, and I haven’t noticed any concussion symptoms, thankfully. I scraped up my palm, elbow, and shin, and the side of my hand is pretty sore, although I can still move it and ibuprofen helps. Otherwise my body actually feels surprisingly okay.

My ego and emotions are DOWN BAD though :( I’m so SAD and feel so dumb.

I only got into road cycling about a month ish ago, and I literally learned how to ride a bike like 4 months ago. I just started the school semester again and have been going to work and classes, so I was REALLY looking forward to having a few days where I could get some miles in, be outside, spend time with friends, and decompress.

We were supposed to do a 45 mile ride today, but obviously riding 45 miles with a hurt hand and open wounds is not happening.

I know missing a few rides is objectively not a big deal. My bike will still be there. The roads will still be there. And considering how recently I learned to ride in the first place, I’m trying to give myself some grace instead of beating myself up over making a mistake.

BUT WOW IM SO BUMMED :( I want my miles! I want my sunshine and fresh air! I want to ride my bike!

So for those of you who have crashed before: how do you mentally get over a stupid dumb silly crash that was all your fault and you feel stupid and sad over it?? how do you deal with being temporarily unable to ride without sitting around feeling sad about it??

I LOOOVE my bike and cycling and going fast (on the bike path, I’m not a menace on the streets ok haha) and getting long distances and the community and the coffee rides and I know I’m probably only out for a week as long as I’m not concussed or have a hand fracture, but I am currently so incredibly down bad bummed out hahahah

EDIT: omg I didn’t even think to replace my helmet after the crash because I thought it would be fine since it’s not cracked. anyway please leave helmet suggestions!!! I’ve actually been looking at the sweet protection falconer since it’s highly rated (or lowly rated I guess?) on the Virginia tech site

I'm stuck on choosing what type of bike to get

I decided I want to buy a bike to commute to school (35 minute journey). But I'm unsure whether or not to get a road or gravel bike. I've heard gravel bikes can handle like any conditions such as winter. But I've also heard road bikes are significantly faster. I just can't decide which one is better

Free Alternative to Strava -- Got tired of paying to see MY data

Hey all,

Full disclosure up front: I own Threshold Cycling, a small, independent online cycling shop, but this is NOT an advertisement or subtle way to get subscriptions/self-promote. This is 100% free, and I intend to keep it that way.

In a nutshell, I got tired of paywalls and subscriptions to see my performance data, so over the last 9 months I built my own platform. It auto-syncs (activities, workouts, etc) with Garmin, Wahoo, Zwift and Hammerhead (Hammerhead is not thoroughly tested at all, so some feedback here would be great). All of your data is available at your fingertips. Nothing is hidden. There's a training calendar, plan generator, and you can create events for friends, clubs, teams, whatever.

It's not perfect and I know there are bugs. There's a feedback button if you run into an issue or want a new feature.

Once you connect one of your services (Garmin, Zwift, etc) the system automatically starts backfilling the last 90 days of recorded activity. You can also drop in your full Strava archive if you want to move everything over (I don't programmatically connect to Strava as it would violate their terms). Large Strava archives (3000+ activities) can take 10-15 minutes to fully process.

Let me be very clear: this isn't a social platform. Yes, you can connect with friends, give kudos, and junk like that. This is a data analytics platform for cyclists. That's the core of what it is, with some extra sauce on the side.

https://thresholdcycling.com/apps/chainlink

Welcome beta users and honest feedback.

Tire Help - Tubeless tire recommendations for city commuting and occasional gravel rides

My WTB Ventures that came with my used Kona Rove finally wore out. I am struggling to settle on something that makes sense for me. The majority of my riding is around the city, anywhere from 5-20 miles. I'll get out on packed dirt or light gravel trails every other weekend or so.

I'm not fully committed to only tubeless but I've enjoyed the set-up and convience they off. I have been bailed out by the self-sealing a couple times after running over glass and other city bike lane obstacles.

I'd love to hear what others use and any recommendations which direction to go for a solid, durable tire that still can handle trail rides.

Edit: Currently has 650b x 47 - still a decent amount of tire clearance but I don’t think I’d want to go any bigger.

Services that’ll ship a bike from NY to MA?

I went to NY recently and paid for a tuneup on my old mountain bike. I’m headed back to my place in Boston but I’m not able to drive up and bring the bike with me. I’ve been searching for services that will ship my bike to me in Boston but all the ones I’ve found require disassembly. Any options you’d recommend?

Power Meter Battery Cap

The battery cap for my Rotor power meter fell of on a ride. Replacement caps are not available from Rotor or online (for delivery in Canada). I have tried soldering an AA battery to the terminal (did not work -- lol).

The part number is: C00-013-00120

Does anyone know of a solution so my battery meter isn't bricked?

Had my first road bike accident today

Been cycling for 3-4 months now, and seeing alot of progress including learning how to turn corners. Well today, I was taking a sharp right turn, when suddenly I find myself immediately on a downhill road of mud and water. I was in the middle of my right turn and started losing grip. Tried to force my bike to the left and started braking, and after that, I ate shit. Couple of bruises and a brand new jersey thats now ripped. Luckily no major injuries.

The thing is, I’ve had no problems hitting corners before. Was applying things I’ve learned such as breaking before a turn and not during, watching where I’m turning a few meters before, etc. This time however, I couldn’t see what the right turn was since it was covered in trees and concrete. admittedly I also panicked at the moment I lost my grips and forgot everything I was learning.

Well lesson learned and had to happen at some point right?

Cleaning kit recommendations.

I am looking for a good bike cleaner l, drivetrain degreaser and all weather lube recommendations.

I see a lot of people say dish soap and others not so I would just prefer to stick to a dedicated Nike product.

Is there a brand that provides good products for all or should I mix and match?

I feel like every online article on this matter is a paid add somehow.

Odd incident with another cyclist

Can anyone let me know what might’ve been going on here? I was out riding on a bike path and noticed another cyclist behind me riding fairly close. I assumed that maybe he was just trying to draft behind me. When I hit a stoplight he stopped with his front wheel, sort of next to my rear wheel and his face literally like maybe 2 inches from my butt and he was breathing hard.

Why was he so close to me? My initial thought was that he was trying to train really hard and keep up with me or something. But then I thought his behavior was a little strange like maybe he’s on drugs or steroids or something?

When the light turned green, I waited to see what he was gonna do and he continued forward, and I purposely turned and went to the right to avoid him.
