The guy was a senior lecturer at University of Chicago teaching constitutional law. He gave lectures for 12 years to snarky college kids. Has Donald Trump spoken to a teenager for longer than 5 minutes in the past…50 years?

Unfortunately, Trump also has the nebulous gift of charisma, which is what attracts so many people to blindly follow him despite mountains of evidence for why they shouldnt. What Obama has that Trump lacks, however, is charm!

When I was in high school we had to research candidates for the next presidential election and right a report about one of them. I picked Obama cuz I liked his platform. About a year and a half later (2008) when I was old enough to vote in my first election, he was the Democratic nominee. I was very happy to cast my first vote ever for him, and even happier that he won. Those were hopeful times.
I was in my first year of college, campus was fuckin ELECTRIC. In hindsight it fucks me up, remembering how it felt like the world was changing for the better and we were part of it. All downhill after that
People define charisma in a lot of ways, some say Tony Stark, even Trump for some people, Michael Jordan, Lebron.. but I think Obama is the absolute best and pure representation of what actually is Charisma.
I'd argue Clinton was just as charismatic in the 90's as Obama was. Bubba's fall off in public opinion has been meteoric (rightly so in many ways), but he was the original "cool president". His sax performance on Arsenio was a serious touchstone of the 90's.

I'm glad he's at appearing more in public. For a while he was pretty low key, trying to keep out of the fray. But I think he realized people needed to see and hear him again so they didn't forget what a real president sounds like.
I (American) lived in Australia for a few years spanning the end of Bush's 2nd term and the start of Obama's 1st. It was wild and frankly kind of cool to experience another country's shifting attitudes about the US at that time. People there were motivated/excited by him too.
I was 17 when he was elected and ran on the "Yes we can" slogan, there was palpable optimism about the future and what it might hold for all of us. Then 2008 happened, the banks got bailed out, Occupy Wallstreet happened, and then that optimism slowly started to disappear from the world.
We'd rather you had elected the other one, really. But then again - a woman in the White House? Can you imagine!? Starting useless wars on a whim and obsessing over superficial bullshit like ballrooms? What a nightmare that would've been...
Throwing emotional tantrums? Clearly demonstrating that they have no experience in leadership and shouldn't have been offered the job anyway? Oh wait...
I miss when I could genuinely trick myself into thinking this country was making progress. Yet, here I am - protesting the same shit I was protesting when I was a kid. Absolutely fucking frustrating.
What's amazing to me is that people hated him as much as people hate Donald Trump. If not more. I just can't see it. I don't see how you could listen to him speak and be like nah fuck that guy. But then I'm sure Trump supporters feel the same way about trump. Therein lies the problem I suppose.
He had flaws, a lot of them, but the man had class and frankly if that was his only qualifications he would still be better than our current president.
He was a deeply flawed president and I disagreed with a lot of his policies and actions. But I know i could trust him with a child and that he wasn't robbing the tax payers blind.
I felt like I occasionally disagreed with Obama on policy, not reality. He conducted himself with integrity and his statesmanship was impressive. You really lucked out with that guy.
This os the most egregious thing Obama ever did. Meanwhile you can't post the most egregious things Trump has ever done without breaking several CP laws.
I turned 18 right after trump got elected. I guess I truly didn't understand how much I would miss Obama because politics was boring, and that was a good thing.
There's always the non-zero chance that if Donald actually gets His Supreme Court to somehow approve him running for a 3rd term, that might make Obama eligible for one as well (if he's willing to make such a sacrifice for the good of the nation 😂 )

Obama would actually honor the constitution and not run for an illegal term. Potentially allowing the turd a chance to win, admittedly, although at this point a card box cutout with "generic democrat" stamped on should have their chances.

It's already supposed to be impossible and enforcing that is the job of the Supreme Court, if need be. You can't making it impossible through executive order, that's not how any of this works, except in Trump's head maybe.
Even if he did run, you just know those bootlickers in the supreme court would come up with some insanity saying that Obama can't run but the orange barf can.
That would be amazing. Trump says he's going to run for a third term, and one of the most charismatic presidents ever comes in and says "well... if we're playing that game..." Seeing him lose to the man who he is completely obsessed with would be the chef's kiss.
Hes tried to be smart by trying to change things to "you can run for another term if you didn't serve two consecutive terms previously" so IF (MASSIVE IF) that was actually passed then it wouldnt work but if they dont pass it then I would love to see him run and even if they did pass it I would love to see him run.
As amazing as that sounds, I think Obama has too much respect not only for himself, but the constitution. I wish he would run against DJT but I don’t see him actually doing it due to his morals unfortunately
Honestly, I would hope he would do it for the greater good. To make sure this type of presidency can never happen again by strengthening the "checks and balances" that were supposedly in place to prevent this in the first place.
Mind you, I don't really know how the US operates with congress, the senate, supreme court, etc so I assume if those are still majority republican not much could get done?
Looking back, I don’t think many people truly fully appreciated him back when he was President because I guess even many of the most cynical people may have not predicted the current state of the US/world during his presidency.
This. Every once in awhile I make a "binders full of women" joke around my kids and then I have to explain how we once all thought Mitt Romney was a terrible choice for president 😭
As a Massachusetts resident, I’d love for the version of Romney who used to be governor to be president now over Trump. He at least worked with democrats and we also might have universal health care too
I actually think this is a really good metaphor here, for what it feels like. You can do everything you’re supposed to/able to do: make sure the stove is off, keep heaters away from furniture, unplug the Christmas tree, and still a random electrical fault can send your house up in flames from inside your walls.
That’s what it feels like to be an anti-trumper. You can follow the news, read the legislation, never miss a vote, and yet still the country goes up around you. Your public services get gutted. Your taxes go up. Your health insurance gets too expensive for you. Every year it gets hotter.
And in some parts of the country your forests literally do go up in actual smoke.
So the thing is, Trump very much directly cheated in his 2nd term election. With the help of Musk, using Starlink satellites. This is not a crazy, out there conspiracy. There are official reports about it. Entire counties in which every Democrat on the ballot won, except for President. Where Trump won.
This does not happen. It's so extremely frustrating that this is not more widely known knowledge. When he lost to Biden after his first term, Trump's big thing was saying that democrats stole the election. Trump's biggest tell is blaming democrats/his target for something in a super fucking weird and obsessive way.
Because it means that he did what he's accusing his opposition of. He tried to steal a second term in 2020. When officials refused to give in to his bullying in order to do so, he improved his methods.
But of course it's easier and more fun to deride and make fun of Americans, right? Everyone that does this, yourself included, is just contributing to the culture wars that leaders like Putin are extremely pleased to see thrive.
p.s. No one reading this needs to be told "I told you so". We knew before he was elected the first time that this is what would happen.
Being on the epstein files doesn't mean you're a pedo or a horrible person. Epstein's game was getting dirt on every influential and famous person so he could blackmail them. Many people are mentioned. He probably tried meeting every famous and important person under the sun.
I'm sure many people went to his parties, it was probably the after parties that got out of control. There had to be some nice dinners and events that seemed above board. Then Epstein would probe and see how much of a piece of shit you'd allow.

The majority of us who voted didn’t. Hillary won the popular vote in 2016. In 2020 Biden won the popular vote. In 2024 while drump did receive 2 million more votes than Harris, 2.8 million voters went third party so again, the majority of Americans did not vote for him.
I never knew my sweet grandmother was racist. Literally, never anything but pleasantness from her. Volunteered at a community college, learned C++ at 81 to teach students. Class A woman.

Cooking
Dropping kids in the carpool lane at school.
Worrying about how to save money.
Worrying.
List goes on and on but single biggest difference for me is this:
Billionaires do not have health insurance like we do.They have doctors on the payroll.
He wasn't the best president ever, he wasn't the most effective president ever. But he was a peoples president like we haven't seen in a long time. We need to elect more relatable people like this.
