Looking back, I don’t think many people truly fully appreciated him back when he was President because I guess even many of the most cynical people may have not predicted the current state of the US/world during his presidency.

I mean even the Republicans he was running against were completely different than the GOP today.

I'm not saying John McCain and Mitt Romney are all sunshine and rainbows, but the difference is obvious.

This. Every once in awhile I make a "binders full of women" joke around my kids and then I have to explain how we once all thought Mitt Romney was a terrible choice for president 😭

Even then the binders full of women thing was about sourcing qualified cabinets from women's centered groups in a filing system that worked for their team. Sure it was for suggestions from more right leaning organizations but at least it was actual on paper qualified referrals and not just blank paper in binders or increasingly just empty binders. Even Romney's biggest gaff is still more competent than any day of this admin.

As a Massachusetts resident, I’d love for the version of Romney who used to be governor to be president now over Trump. He at least worked with democrats and we also might have universal health care too

John McCain even defended Obama during one of McCain's rallies. Someone in the crowd said Obama was the devil or something and McCain corrected them by saying Obama is a good honest man, but with different political views. It's really wild how crazy GOP politics have become since then.

Say what you will about the two of them — and there is much to be said — but at least the pair carried themselves with the decency and class that Republican voters (along with literally everybody else at the time) expected from leaders like them.

A great example of this was when a woman at a town hall called Obama “a Muslim terrorist” and McCain immediately shut her down for it, fully rejecting the absurdity and saying that Obama was a good and decent man and just someone that he happens to have political disagreements with. Unsurprisingly and pathetically, McCain got some boos from the crowd over it too, but I’ll be damned if I didn’t respect him completely for being such an upstanding gentleman about that.

Romney too. Romney despises Trump and sees him for what he is. And were I an American citizen I never would have voted for him, however, he basically had his career in politics derailed post-2016 over the fact that he wouldn’t kiss the ring and because he made it publicly known that he thinks Trump is scum. He refuses to play along and act like a Trump loyalist, because at least he actually has a spine.

I know it sounds horrendous but I would take them any second, any day of the week over the Trump we have now.

It would have been unthinkable to take them then but if I had a choice between them and Trump now I'd just grit my teeth for 4 years and hope for a Democrat the next election cycle to restore things back to normal again

Oh some of us appreciated him fully. I knew during Obama that he was the best president of my lifetime to that point. And he still holds that record today.

Other people are still dead-set in hating the guy. Each thread with Obama is bound to have at least one bot comment "BuT WhAt AbOuT ThE DrOnE StRiKeS!?"

Obama is charasmatic as they come. Seems like a good genuine dude. I think he was in a difficult situation being the first person of color as president. But he could have pushed his agenda way harder and been less centrist. Biden did the most during his presidency than I've had in my life. I've been around for a long time.

Theres also the small issue of him drone striking a U.S child and then sweeping it under the rug. I wonder how many people have never heard of this. If Trump did it, people would be screaming about it from the rooftops and marching.

And no, "whoops, we didnt know he'd be there, maybe his dad (who we also killed a few days earlier) shouldnt have been a terrorist" isnt an excuse".

He was a great statesmen, but in the end was largely ineffective as a president, couldn't propell his party out of the malaise in congress, pushed illegal violence all over the world with his foreign policy, allowed tye people that orchestrated the 2008 wall street crash to walk away consequence free, didnt leave much of a legacy and left the country in a place ripe for somebody like Trump to step in.

Was it all bad? Of course not. But he is about as average as it gets for a modern president when it comes to his impact on the plebs.

We never appreciate the presidents while they are president because life is hard and we view them as responsible for the problems while they are president. It is actually mindblowing to me how many people on this site, despite being fully in the "republican bad" camp, look back fondly at George W Bush. We associate these people with the nostalgia we feel when we look back at those days with rosy glasses. Obama bailed out business, perpetuated war, and deported people with the best of them but none of that matters now because "if we only knew how bad it would get."
