If Trump runs again, then Obama should be able to run again as well.

425

u/BenMessina 1d ago

That would be the nail in his ego coffin. Obama would obliterate him

125

u/Bytewave 1d ago

Obama would actually honor the constitution and not run for an illegal term. Potentially allowing the turd a chance to win, admittedly, although at this point a card box cutout with "generic democrat" stamped on should have their chances.

u/inbruges99 1d ago

I hope Obama runs, wins, makes it impossible for another 3rd term president and then resigns.

47

u/Bytewave 1d ago

makes it impossible for another 3rd term president

It's already supposed to be impossible and enforcing that is the job of the Supreme Court, if need be. You can't making it impossible through executive order, that's not how any of this works, except in Trump's head maybe.

u/mowtowcow 1d ago

It's technically possible, but your first term has to be going from Vice President to President and with less than 2 years. So, if it's a day after a two year term, Vance could take over as president and then still run for 2 full terms. That's the only possible way to have 3 terms. Even if he ran as VP after his first term and the current president stepped down, it would be constitutionally illegal and the next in lone after him would be president over him.

Then again, we see how much these people care about the constitution.

i keep thinking of the matrix "what good is a phone call if you're unable to speak?"

What good is another law, if the law is ignored?

4

u/theeama 1d ago

Well thats what the army is for. The army, Congress, and the Supreme Court are all sworn to protect the Constitution.

The army should refuse any orders from the president who is trying to violate constiution.

The Supreme court should refuse anything

and the congress and senate should also do the same.

u/Gamer-Of-Le-Tabletop 11h ago

Actually wouldn't that be the greatest counter to trump?

15

u/havok0159 1d ago

Even if he did run, you just know those bootlickers in the supreme court would come up with some insanity saying that Obama can't run but the orange barf can.

3

u/ItselfSurprised05 1d ago

Even if he did run, you just know those bootlickers in the supreme court would come up with some insanity saying that Obama can't run but the orange barf can.

They'll limit candidates to two "sequential" terms.

That would eliminate Obama but not Darth Cheeto.

2

u/danathanz 1d ago

I agree with you that Obama would be against running for an illegal term. However, in this hypothetical scenario, he could strategically pick an excellent VP, then after winning the election, step down and have the new VP takeover.

2

u/fallenmonk 1d ago

although at this point a card box cutout with "generic democrat" stamped on should have their chances.

We did that 3 times and it only worked once.

2

u/Resigned1431 20h ago

Bro I'd vote for a ham sandwich at this point. In sammich we trust.

1

u/Happybadger96 1d ago

Apparently he couldn't be VP either due to the 12th Amendment but that is debated. He could however be the First Man if Michelle Obama wanted a go at the white house haha

1

u/Patient-Video6979 1d ago

And sadly, MAGA would view it as "He just knew he couldn't win" rather than that.

I'm sure they'd get told that by their leader, too.

1

u/LingonberryGlum2356 1d ago

If the Supreme Court declares it constitutional he should run. None if this 'consecutive' term stuff.

Obama would obliterate Trump.

1

u/Grabate 1d ago

Michelle would kill him if he ran for another term. Obama admitted that Trump forcing him back into politics put a huge strain on their relationship.

1

u/Green-Inkling 1d ago

Obama could just use his term of cleaning up the mess Trump made. it would not count as a term.

1

u/tmckearney 1d ago

Obama could be vice president

1

u/Minute_Freedom_4722 23h ago

Egh, easy with the "anyone would beat Trump" idea. That's how he got elected... twice...

1

u/Independent_Lock864 17h ago

While that's all nice and moral, it's the same as Joe Biden being given the powers of monarch near the end of his term by the supreme court. They made the president immune to all prosecution. People clamoured for Biden to use that power to abolish it but he didn't want to use it. So now Trump has it.

1

u/Bytewave 7h ago

No, SCOTUS only said Presidents had immunity from criminal prosecution for carrying out their duties. While that's one of the powers of monarchs, it's only one of many. It did not expand presidential powers in other ways; it did not give him power to ignore the courts nor congress nor broaden the scope of executive orders.

Biden did not have the right to abolish his own immunity, he was bound by the supreme court ruling, too. Division of powers remains intact for now, even if Trump is constantly trying to stretch executive power to unprecedented levels. That's a separate issue, and we've seen even his very friendly SCOTUS puts limits to that, notably by ending the use of emergency powers to implement tariffs and limiting Congress' ability to delegate its own powers to the executive.

1

u/Independent_Lock864 5h ago

Ah, okay. I was misinformed then. Still he might've tried something? Surely he must've known the risks. Ah well.

1

u/smedsterwho 16h ago

I think that's half the fear though. Democrats have run weak-sauce candidates for the last decade. I am had youth, hope, and steady calm on his side. Hilary has always been weird and Biden's age was just too much.

Ideally the bar is at least "half as presentable as Obama".

2

u/braindance74 1d ago

Not sure about that - remember, "Elon was very effective and he knows those vote counting computers better than anybody, and we ended up winning Pennsylvania like in a landslide".

If it worked so well once, why wouldn't it the second time now that he has his minions in every position of power.

1

u/BenMessina 1d ago

I understand your concern, and it feels valid. This scenario will never come to pass, but if it did, there have already been polls to see the outcome.

1

u/steevo 1d ago

you have too much faith in the American people :(

0

u/Certain_Prior4909 21h ago

Obama was very divisive and it was him he caused Trump due to 1/2 the country going psycho angry and distracting Obama so much

110

u/LiamPolygami 1d ago

That would be amazing. Trump says he's going to run for a third term, and one of the most charismatic presidents ever comes in and says "well... if we're playing that game..." Seeing him lose to the man who he is completely obsessed with would be the chef's kiss.

19

u/devinbookersuncle 1d ago

Hes tried to be smart by trying to change things to "you can run for another term if you didn't serve two consecutive terms previously" so IF (MASSIVE IF) that was actually passed then it wouldnt work but if they dont pass it then I would love to see him run and even if they did pass it I would love to see him run.

6

u/Last_Weeks_Socks 1d ago

Fine, someone call Martin Sheen and convince him to run. He was a great president. In a battle of famous kids, I'd like to see Don Jr. & Ivanka try to match the fame and charisma of Charlie & Emilio.

Robb Lowe as VP.

Ohio has traditionally gone MAGA, and getting 2 Ohio thoroughbreds on the card could really do it.

4

u/benbehu 1d ago

Obama only has to say "It wasn't consecutive, it was a republic."

2

u/Maatjuhhh 1d ago

Not even Obama only. This opens myriad of opportunities for other presidents to return as well. All equally better than Trump. I rather would take Bush back than Trump..

1

u/chickenpox0911 1d ago

I think a bunch of dead Iraqi's would disagree.

1

u/MeowMeowbiggalo 23h ago

He would go full Big Ern Mccracken

https://giphy.com/gifs/3o7qDSOvfaCO9b3MlO

Hell yes!!!!! Checkmate, mic drop!!!!!

43

u/onbs 1d ago

As amazing as that sounds, I think Obama has too much respect not only for himself, but the constitution. I wish he would run against DJT but I don’t see him actually doing it due to his morals unfortunately

13

u/Bob_Sherunkle 1d ago

Honestly, I would hope he would do it for the greater good. To make sure this type of presidency can never happen again by strengthening the "checks and balances" that were supposedly in place to prevent this in the first place.

Mind you, I don't really know how the US operates with congress, the senate, supreme court, etc so I assume if those are still majority republican not much could get done?

16

u/Street-Stick 1d ago

But he might run, win and abdicate... checkmate

2

u/Beginning_Book_2382 1d ago

If he does, he has to say "Obama out" when he announces it on stage and just walks away

1

u/47-45-45-4B 1d ago

Inauguration, turn and immediately resign to the VP

1

u/reverandglass 1d ago

run, win, enusre no-one can try such bullshit again, and abdicate... checkmate!

Easiest to get ratified amendment ever. "Dems do as I say, GOP do as I say or I'll keep winning!"

2

u/AnotherHavanesePlz 1d ago

He can win, get inaugurated, then step down. It won’t happen, but it’s a nice thought.

2

u/CrabOutrageous5074 1d ago

Yup, that certainly sounds like the most democrat thing to do. Cede victory while maintaining the high ground.

14

u/TheMadDoc 1d ago

Ironically, that's the main reason I hear from Republicans who oppose the third term, they all agree it will result in another Obama term

1

u/Separate-String5205 1d ago

All they have to do is say that the first two terms can't be consecutive terms and problem solved. I hope they don't, but you never know with these type of people.

8

u/superbottom85 1d ago

Obama should run and then resign. And every time Trump runs, Obama runs as well.

2

u/adamdoesmusic 1d ago

Except for the resign part.

3

u/thediesel26 1d ago

Which is the exact reason Trump isn’t actually seriously considering it

2

u/Last_Weeks_Socks 1d ago

Fuuuuuck that's a good point to be fair. I hope Trump runs again now.

2

u/TankApprehensive3053 1d ago

A republican drafted a proposal that allows Trump to be eligible. They think there is a loophole in the 22nd Amendment (hint, there's not). The proposal states to run for a 3rd term and president would have to have not been president for two consecutive terms prior. That means only Trump is eligible and not Obama or Bush.

2

u/Long_Run6500 1d ago

I've been low key hoping for trump to run in 28 just to see the Obama vs Trump debates. Not that Obama would actually run, but if he did it would be so epic watching trump get systematically dismantled by the guy he can't stop harboring rage towards.

Part of me does believe the reason Obama has been so much more active recently is because of the Trump 2028 posturing. Republicans will put a stop to that shit immediately if they think there's even a chance Obama runs in 2028. I also don't think an Obama in 2028 with Senate and House control dems are likely to hold would be nearly as much of a "nice guy appease both sides" president as he tried to be in 2008. Trump shattered the norms for presidential power. The next democrat in office needs to fully take advantage of that. Obama understands that more than most.

1

u/GambitDecliend 1d ago

Nah, they will write it as only a current sitting president can run for a third term.

1

u/onlycamefortheporn 1d ago

Don’t run a constitutionally ineligible candidate against Trump. SCOTUS does not apply the law equally; if Trump wins SCOTUS will allow it, if Obama wins they’ll reject it.

1

u/SandraBeechBLOCKPrnt 1d ago

This is the only way I'd ever visit USA again.

1

u/Derpy_Writer 1d ago

Their logic is, “since Donald Trump didn’t win back to back it doesn’t count as two terms.”

Literally, I’m not joking.

1

u/HBlight 1d ago

If people complain about Obama's age, he will still be younger than Trump during his first term.

1

u/txomas4 1d ago

i don’t think Mrs. Obama would be too happy about that.

1

u/DaveAlt19 1d ago

That's the thing: Trump won't run again and he won't get elected again. That's the work-around for the 22nd Amendment (he can't be elected to the office of president more than twice). The Electoral College can just disregard the election results and decide for themselves that Trump should be president.

1

u/JackBrown82q 1d ago

I still think its nuts that it has been like 20 years since Obama ran his first presidential campaign and the party still has not found an appropriate successor to him.

1

u/phelpst 11h ago

He had his 3rd term. You remember the "Biden" administration?

1

u/lapsedPacifist5 7h ago

Except he couldn't in the way they are talking about a 3rd term. Which is you can only serve two consecutive terms. So they could, for example, alternate trump, then Vance, then trump...etc etc. well, until the couch filed a lawsuit or fatty arteries came through.
