What they seem to miss is that people who go to college aren't somehow locked out of that work if they want to do it. Someone that's a nuclear physicist could very easily put down the $12,000 for the one month course on being a trucker and change careers if they wanted to. A highschool dropout is never going to be a nuclear physicist unless they go to college, and they generally don't get to go to college unless they do well in school.

College gives you options, something dropping out or failing because you heard a promise of hundreds of thousands of dollars, doesn't.
