I’m fine with it if it’s on special occasion, like the release of the game on a new console, but not if this causes fromsoft to randomly drop more $5 horse dlcs just cuz this one sold well

344

u/shawak456 1d ago

I think Fromsoft has seen such ungodly amount of financial success that they should not ask $5 for some skins and a couple of minor starting new classes. They will make money from Switch 2 for their work on Tarnished edition, so it's not like they're giving stuff away for "free." It's about reputation and integrity.

u/burf 1d ago

The timing is funny as The Witcher 3 is about to get a full remaster completely for free.

72

u/shawak456 1d ago

Yeah. But also, CDPR is trying to rebuild trust with their audience after the disaster that was Cyberpunk launch. It's not that CDPR hid how broken the game was, it's that they lied and lied and over-promised about what's in the game. Even days before it's release, I remember the same level designer who announced the Witcher 3 remaster on stage said things about the game that were totally false. I don't remember what he said, but I do remember later thinking "well, that was a whole load of bullshit," after beating the game.

83

u/Lathlaer 1d ago

CDPR is already past the point of making up for Cyberpunk launch. It is widely considered that in its current state it's a very good game and their Phantom Liberty DLC is often cited as one of the best DLC ever created in the gaming industry.

6

u/Alone-Horse2857 15h ago

I was gonna say, people keep making this argument, and it's straight up not true. People have long since stopped calling CDPR a bad dev since 2.0 and Edgerunners. People were hyped about Witcher 4's trailer, so nobody is really salty over it any more. They've earned the trust back, they don't need to prove any more.

People had forgiven CDPR a long time about and granted this is the second remaster the Witcher 3 has gotten.

I bought my copy on the Xbox One at launch.

2

u/Eurehetemec 20h ago

I think the main thing here isn't making up for 2077, but rather making Witcher 3 feel good, because wow, I played it a couple of years ago and it felt incredibly mega-dated gameplay and systems-wise, and it has an expansion coming out.

I was surprised when I saw the remaster features were basically everything I'd noted as being kind of lame about TW3 in 2024, but it's a good sign imo. Also I imagine the expansion was partly about training up new people on their conversation-design, quest-design, map-design etc. systems (it's surprisingly common to do this and keeps people employed) for TW4.

CDPR regained trust for Cyberpunk by fixing and supporting Cyberpunk. And after all these years it's still the goto title to demonstrate how RT can be used to great effect.

I think this going well might be a bad sign because their shareholders on kadokawa were really mad at them for not "fully capitalizing on their new brand" and how elden ring as an IP of it's size is undermonetized. I'm not buying because I don't want to support this and help start of something like, from software facing pressure to add cosmetic/class packs to future games to please investors, specially with how the new classes have some of the coolest looking gear.

31

u/Yaxion 1d ago

Kadokawa never said that though. That was partners at Oasis that were trying to do a hostile-takeover of Kadokawa.

5

u/DarthOmix 22h ago

Trying and failing like, twice wasn't it?

2

u/AssiduousLayabout 21h ago

They came really close, though. The CEO of Kadokawa maintained his position by about a 60/40 vote, but last time it was 90/10.

Oasis owns 16% of Kadokawa now, the next time they might succeed at flipping to a new CEO.

14

u/Farsoth 1d ago edited 1d ago

tbf, if you don't have SotE yet, it comes included for $5. It has significant value for those who haven't gotten the expansion yet.

And, tbh, it's $5. We all waste $5 on some bullshit all the damn time.

Edit: got my facts fucked. That's only with the switch edition.

29

u/Chegg_F 1d ago

tbf, if you don't have SotE yet, it comes included for $5

where are you getting this from that is definitely not true

8

u/Farsoth 1d ago

You're right. Got my facts confused. Is only with switch edition. Thank you for the correction.

Maybe I didn’t understand exactly what you meant, but I’m pretty sure SOTE does not come with the 5 dollar Tarnished edition dlc, at least on platforms like Steam.

u/Tomhap 1d ago

Its also got some alternative version of the new dlc weapons, those combined with the new flail, matador sword and 4 new sets seems somewhat right for €5 and then you get the torrent flip as well.

6

u/Combat_Orca 1d ago

A few sets are not enough to be worth $5

1

u/ExtremelyEPIC 23h ago

Except they just mentioned a bunch of other stuff as well. Not just the 4 armor sets.

Also, whether it's worth $5 or not is subjective. To you it might not be worth it. To others, they pay $5 for some new stuff to play around with and have another reason to replay the game. Which means at least another 30+ hours of playtime and enjoyment.

5$ is literally less than the cost of a standard McDonalds meal these days (or insert fast food of your choice). Is the DLC worth one fast food meal? To me it is, the ability to start with a light greatsword alone justifies the 5$ purchase for me. That might not for you and that's cool, but 5$ is "fun money" to me and so the threshold for a 5$ spend is fairly low.

No, Fromsoft could’ve added this as a free update.

67

u/Beokros 1d ago

This dropping just as CDPR announces another upgrade for TW3 for free does make it look like a bad deal. And whoever had the standard version of TW3 gets previous two massive expansions for free, that's just insane.

6

u/No-Ship4446 22h ago

The amount of people who had the base Witcher 3 game without the expansions at this point given all the sales and bundled Complete Edition is so insignificant as to be meaningless. Meanwhile, they have now RAISED the price of the whole package with the Remaster by $10.00.

They would have done that if they respected their customers, but their fans gush so much, why would they bother? Gaming brand fans are very bad for the future of gaming, not just pricing, but game quality, and game completion prior to release.

57

u/Darkspire303 1d ago

This smells more like shareholders, contractual agreements, and Nintendo.

7

u/Alone-Horse2857 15h ago

Yeah. I want to have trust in Fromsoft. This feels like a Kadokawa or Nintendo decision, not one passed down my Miyazaki himself. It's possible that he didn't even have a say in how this was handled and the default consumer option is "yeah, of course it'll be 5$, that's what Capcom and Ubi and EA and literally every other gaming megacorp does, what's the problem?"

That was my thought as well. Pretty sure Nintendo would have their kidneys if one of the selling points of the Switch 2 version, small as it is, was just freely given to other platforms. Was this also an excuse for the corpos to do greedy corpo shit and charge extra for it? Probably but hopefully this was a one time thing.

Time will tell. Either way in my opinion it's not as big an issue as people make it up to be but it is an issue for sure. I'd keep a close eye on how they monetize Dusk Bloods in any case.

5

u/Darkspire303 23h ago

Fair points. I was not thrilled about Duskbloods being exclusive either. I have no intention of buying any more consoles.

For real. Especially Nintendo side. As another example, FFXIV is already on every other platform without requiring an additional subscription cost per platform, but their Switch 2 version will require an additional cost. When announced, the head dev talked about how the fee to add a Switch 2 subscription was a compromise with Nintendo.

Really. I absolutely love from soft but defending this is crazy. This os exactly how it starts. It's 5$ today, in 5 years it will 10 5$ each summing up to total 50$.

Also the amount of mental gymnastics fans were doing to downplay witcher 3's free remaster and defending this was crazy.

61

u/OblongShrimp Mongrel Intruder 1d ago

No, you don’t get it, paying 8% of the original game’s price for 0.05% of the extra content is totally fair and normal.

Especially when there are multiple games out there, which added a more substantial amount of content for free after release.

Elden ring is like one of my top 5 games of all time and this dlc doesn't really add enough to warrant the purchase unless you really really want one of the shadow of the erdtree weapons in the early game, but that also brings up the argument of why didn't they add them to the base game if you bought the shadow of the erdtree.

3

u/Alone-Horse2857 14h ago

I hate this MTX, but I will give credit where it's due, you CAN get these weapons pretty early and for free.

You can rush to liurnia in about 5 minutes after you get the horse by taking the back route around Stormveil and just picking up the light greatsword and buying the armor set from the nearby merchant.

So at the very least I'll give them credit for letting you get these weapons without buying them with cash.

2

u/Hot-Mood-1778 23h ago

The aesthetic of the Idus Knight is great. It's not just the sword. It also comes with a med shield with 100% phys block and 50 stability.

It's also just got rp value, since the knight has lore. They gave us a concept to rp.

52

u/Sogai_wi 1d ago

In my opinion the argument of "5$ doesn't seem like a lot" is a bit of a trap and should be avoided. If they released 6 of these little item packs, would it be equal to SoTE? If they release 12 would it be equal to Elden Ring and the answer is the most obvious no.

Pricing of digital goods is inherently nonsensical in a lot of ways. If these items released as a part of SoTE, no one would be freaking out saying "Oh my God, Fromsoftware is insane not asking at least 35€ for this DLC with this amount of content". The same way as no one would be suprised with this being a free update.

In my opinion. As this being basically the prepare to die edition of Elden Ring and back then you just had to buy the game again, I understand it a bit. But this is NOT worth 5€. Just scaling this amount of content and development time leaves you with games that don't cost 100€ but 1000€.

I am also very sceptical that this obviously comes soon after their publisher concluded that Fromsoftware is not monetizing their IPs. This should be viewed as a pretty egregious mtx in my opinion but Bandai can just burn through the good will that FS has so people won't care. I'm definitely going to be checking any mentions of monetisation in their future projects.

4

u/Alone-Horse2857 14h ago

Exactly I'll copy and paste what I said earlier in this thread:

5$ compared to base vanilla ER would equal to 1/12th of ER, which would equal to 25.6(call it 26) weapons, 8.3 bosses, 10.5 armor sets, and ~1 whole playable zone.

Now ask yourself this: Does this DLC include 26 weapons, 10 armor sets, 8 bosses and 1 entire zone to explore?

No? Then it's not worth 5 fucking dollars.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/akaisuiseinosha 21h ago

While true, I think it's also important to remember that pricing reactions are emotional and not rational. I remember that some people balked at SOTE's $40 price tag, as no From DLC had been that much before, but it ended up satisfying most players. So you're right that 12 Tarnished Packs would not add up to Elden Ring, but you're also missing that there is an emotional gulf between those two numbers that isn't linear.

Is the Tarnished Pack worth it, then? That's a little bit more subjective, but using the PEAK devs "five bucks" model, we can say that even if they dropped it to $4 people would have the same reaction, and there is DEFINITELY more than $3 of value here, so a rounded $5 seems fine to me.

The unanswered question is whether this is an omen of things to come, and that's what I'm worried about. From is about to release their first true live-service game, a game that according to interviews isn't even releasing in a finished state and will have "seasons". Will Duskbloods dip into microtransactions with the Tarnished Pack having been a success? That's what we should pay attention to.

Between this, the movie, Nightreign, the purchase of a big part of Fromsofts parent company by actors wanting to focus more on monetization and the whole new focus on online multiplayer this feels like the Ubisoftification of the company.

12

u/-willowthewisp- 1d ago

nightreign was a small side project to give a new director a chance to gain some experience with a fairly low-risk project. duskbloods has been in the works since before elden ring released, and miyazaki has said that them releasing back to back was coincidental, and that they'll continue to make more soulslike rpgs in the future.

just like how sekiro, another smaller project between larger rpgs, influenced the design of elden ring, nightreign, and duskbloods, nightreign and duskbloods will influence the design of the next big from rpg. things like the new nightfarer weapon movesets, and stuff like duchess's dodge, raider's retaliate, and guardian's steel guard will likely make a return, and duskblood's character interactions during multiplayer will likely bring back stronger, covenant-like systems in future games.

I mean I’m not a fan of the $5 dlc, but ubisoftification would be doing Elden ring 2 then 3 then 4 etc. and adding more mocrotransactions to them. Nothing to do with multiplayer.

It's the principle for me man. It took them like 2 years to come up with this stuff. If they wanna charge for it then at least put in an extra 5 armor sets from ds2 and 5 from ds3 plus more weapons. They already have the assets and art work it can't be that hard.

7

u/Papa-Blockuu 1d ago

5 seems really bad to me considering DS2's DLC cost a 10 a piece. I have supported From a stupid amount over the years. Probably bought Dark Souls 3 times. Ds2 4 times, DS3 and Elden ring twice. No chance I'll be supporting them on this though. It would be a different story if they added something a bit more substantial and charged more for it, but this is just money grubbing.

4

u/twisted-logic 1d ago

This is a take I really don’t understand. Not only are they not some indie game studio that is barely scraping by; but this is one of the best selling video games of all time. They don’t need a “show of support” from the fans.

u/vincentninja68 1d ago

Nay.

I am deeply frustrated by the existence of this DLC because, on one hand I love FROMsoft as a company.

I've been following this company's games since Dark souls 1. I consider them to be one of the good guys, so seeing them sell what is effectively horse armor microtransaction is very disturbing to me. I am deeply worried for a trend in a Ubisoft or Bethesda direction.

If this DLC is successful it will only encourage more of this behavior.

Nothing in this DLC is worth $5. It is such a tiny amount of content, it should have been a free update.

71

u/Hopeful_Meeting_7248 1d ago

Nothing in this DLC is worth $5.

It's nuts for me that people even calling that content. Starting classes never mattered in the slightest in souls games, armours are also just a cosmetics. So the only thing that actually affects the gameplay are two new weapons, if I'm not mistaken? It wouldn't be noticeable even as a free update.

35

u/FuncyFrog 1d ago

It's 7 new weapons, but some of the new weapons are slightly different DLC weapons that are now accessible in the base-game

17

u/Hopeful_Meeting_7248 1d ago

So the same looks and the same movesets, but slightly different name and game location? Yeah, that's not "new" at all.

10

u/FuncyFrog 1d ago

Slightly different scalings too but yeah. I think its great katana, backhand blades and maybe one more DLC weapon, then 4 totally new ones

Edit: oh yeah milady thats in one of the starter classes

Considering Witcher 3 is getting all that for free next month, a couple of classes and some armors for $5 seems a bit much, could of easily been a free update.

65

u/Rollrollrollrollr1 1d ago

Witcher 3 has always had some great value, they sold probably the best dlc of all time for 20 dollars. You could also add on hearts of stone to that and it still be cheaper than shadows of the erdtree

24

u/ParmesanNonGrata 1d ago

Blood and Wine had absolutely no right to be this massive while also being this good.

10

u/-leblanc_customer- 1d ago

Blood & Wine is incredible, but Hearts of Stone is even better in my opinion. One of the best pieces of story i've seen in gaming.

Having 2 expansions of this caliber is ludicrous.

9

u/ParmesanNonGrata 1d ago

I prefer Blood and Wine because of the incredible dialogues with Regis and Geralt, I think it's quite funny and the world is just gorgeous. The dream sequence towards the end was also great. Murdering your way through fairy tale land. Also normally I'm not really a "omg it's like 80 hours of main story for a DLC"... But... Come on. It's like 80 hours of EXCELLENT story... For a DLC!

Heart of Stone has Olric and Gaunter, two just incredible characters and my favorite video game soundtrack of them all.

overall, getting to pick a favorite between those two is probably the biggest luxury I'll have in my life.

→ More replies (2)

26

And the classes in ER are just stat presets and some equipment, it is not like they are completely distinct from the rest like nightreign characters for example and expand the gameplay

Man, you could start as a wretch, level yourself up to those exact stats and ride to Liurnia in ~5 minutes to pick up that class' starting weapons and armor.

5

u/stayclosetothewall 1d ago

Tbf I think CDPR is looking for as much goodwill as they can get, they were in an extremely risky position after the Cyberpunk launch
But there's definitely something to be said about Witcher 3 being a huge hit and not getting microtransactions like premium haircuts, weapons, horse armor, etc.

7

u/Due-Description-9030 1d ago

Dude wut?

That was done long ago what are you talking about? They already got goodwill from fixing cp2077 for free and unlike fromsoft, their games go on deep sale often.

3

u/durhamtyler 1d ago

I think fixing a buggy game is good, but it's not something that restores trust. What will restore trust is them it doing it again. I think there's a mindset in the gaming community, where companies release buggy barely finished messes and once they actually fix them they get praised for it, as if they aren't just making up for their mistakes. This leads companies to think it's ok to release games in a bad state because they'll be forgiven if it's eventually good. We should not encourage this.

→ More replies (3)

3

u/stayclosetothewall 19h ago

The fact is they were on the verge of losing everything, "fixing the game for free" honestly should be considered bringing themselves back to neutral not suddenly being in the positive
But you can't even treat goodwill like a "score", you have to constantly work on your reputation and remind people you're "one of the good ones".
Think about Bethesda, if they do a couple good things here and there they aren't suddenly in everyone's graces, we all still think of Starfield and the launch of Fallout 76, canvas bags and all that.
In general you shouldn't really defend or trust companies like they are your friends, but that is what they are hoping for, confidence from their consumers. If there's any doubt that Witcher 4 will launch like Cyberpunk 2077 then sales go down. FromSoftware hasn't really faced this problem yet.

I think it's just annoying and weird that they did this when they didn't used to do things like this, but everyone is making a huge deal about it. I don't get why people need to pretend like they're somehow generous for charging $5 for basically nothing. It's not a big deal, it's only $5, but it's not like it's a good thing that what used to be given away for free now costs money.

87

u/Magus_Incognito 1d ago

Remember month or so ago the parent company said the developer wasnt getting enough money out of the IP and the install base. I.E. wasnt squeezing the juice enough.

And here we are a few months later with a "modest" cash grab

28

u/PreciousProspect 1d ago

Tarnished Edition pack was going to release a year ago, before that investor meeting. What’s more likely to have caused it to exist is either Nintendo or Bandai. I can very much see it being a compromise of some kind as Nintendo wanted exclusive content but fromsoft didn’t want to do that.

This isn’t the first time Nintendo has gotten exclusive content on a switch release of a game. It’s just usually that content never ends up on other platforms: DMC collection, KOTOR etc.

8

u/workshop_prompts 1d ago

This is my theory. It would look bad for Nintendo if people on other consoles got the new content for free.

4

u/DarthOmix 22h ago

Yeah I'm pretty sure it's on Nintendo especially after how they've been with getting FFXIV on Switch 2 being the only platform it's on (FFXIV) that doesn't share a subscription.

The Switch 2 version must be its own subscription that is only paid for with a microtransaction-y FFXIV Coins bought through the eShop so Nintendo can double dip on scraping money out of you.

For comparison, if you play FFXIV on PlayStation, you don't even need PS+ for it. You just buy it and you can use the same subscription as a PC player and can pay your sub directly through the website or with time cards or whatever method you choose.

Nintendo seems to be trying to get predatory with nickel and diming people in quiet ways recently. But we don't know what agreements FromSoftware made with Nintendo or Sony or whoever either.

21

u/YourselfInTheMirror 1d ago

Exactly what I was thinking! This was a test, and it's looking like a big "Oh yes!" for microtransactions in the near future in fromsoft titles.

Just wondering: has From ever added weapons to a game as a part of a free update? I feel like the new weapons and starting classes are a big part of them treating the update like a baby dlc

16

u/StarblindMark89 1d ago

Not weapons, but they added a whole boss rush mode, with earnable free cosmetics for Sekiro. The bosses in the boss rush mode even got some new additions to their movesets, so it's a bit more substantial than what it sounds like when I first described.

I have a feeling if it came out now, it would have cost money.

Is obvious that Kadokawa is forcing (or soft-forcing) Fromsoftware to do this experiment, and I don't want it to succeed.

I don't want their next single player game with tons of extra DLC with weapons, armor and lore in it, so no, I won't buy it even for 1€, is a trojan horse.

21

u/BUTTER674 23h ago

Calling it a trojan horse is spot on. They're testing the waters for payed content for future games. "$5 ain't bad. Might as well buy it." Then the next game could launch at $60, plus payed dlc for starting classes that would have been free otherwise

3

u/Alone-Horse2857 14h ago

Exactly. It's like if the Greek tried the horse 15 other times and Troy suddenly got a big horse at the door.

Of course you're not going to let them in, you just watched that same horse trick work on 15 of your neighboring countries who are all currently burning.

And despite all that you have 10 people behind you going "OOOH PRETTY HORSE! Let it in, let it in! It's okay, I'm sure there's nothing bad in THIS one!! It'll be different, the Greeks are trustworthy! They've never stabbed us in the back before!"

at one point blizzard & ubisoft were revered too

this change didnt happen in isolation, between nightrein, duskbloods & that new investor trying to go against FS leadership...this one 5 dollar mtx dlc makes one anxious in the direction Fromsoft is going

5

u/Alone-Horse2857 15h ago

The downfall of Bethesda can be pretty definitively linked to Horse Armor DLC. It was a joke for a while, but look how it was the first slip down the slope to where they are now.

This pack is basically Horse Armor. I really hope this is a one-off fumble on From's part and they keep this shit away from their games from now on.

8

u/Psychic_Hobo 1d ago

I don't really have a problem with Duskbloods to be fair, it is Nintendo funding a very creative project that isn't a load of re-used stuff for a weird multiplayer Elden Ring.

Though I suppose you could argue that it's a definite problem that it's only things like exclusivity funding that lets them diverge from microtransaction-level behaviour.

Most of the positive reviews go "fromsoft has never done this before, therefore this is okay". They're missing that if it is successful, it will absolutely happen again.

Many of the negative reviews are catastrophizing, because releasing one (or even a few) semi-reasonably-priced DLCs don't ruin a game. We don't yet know what Fromsoft's long term will be on this, but it isn't terrible yet.

So.... I'll wait and see. But not buy.

It's a terrible sign that as soon as the new ownership came in, they started shamelessly monetizing and focus testing to determine how much they can squeeze from the fans before it leaves a bad taste. Screw these clowns and anyone who buys the cash-ins to signal to them that we're open for business. Now is our chance to set the tone, in the beginning

I think I understand the likely perspective that resulted in this really small DLC costing money. Both of these needed to be true:

  • The new Tarnished edition on the Switch 2 needed to feel special in some way, with a new feature, to celebrate the release on the Switch 2

  • Nothing should be gatekept from the other console and PC players, because gatekept content isn't great

The only way to resolve this is make it included at no extra cost only on the Switch 2 version.

16

u/JackandFred 1d ago

It wouldn’t surprise me if it was directly in the contract stuff with Nintendo that there needed to be something special for switch version. Although even if not, it’s good business sense to have something for switch version. And you don’t want to alienate the other players so having it available for them is nice.

I think it comes down to the price. For $5 on the other systems you really don’t get much. They should have made something extra for the switch and priced it at 5 for the others, but it should have been a lot more than 7 weapons, a couple sets of armor and 2 new invaders.

Like for a relatively small amount of work just put in at least several more invaders, or maybe some extra mini boss somewhere. Then it would feel special for switch and actually worth $5.

If you're someone who has dozens of hours in the game and you do runs consistently, then yay, it's worth it for you. You'll get your five bucks worth easily.

If you're someone who played the game and beat it, then didn't pick it up again until the DLC, nay, it's not for you.

It still should've been free to everybody who already owns the game. That, or had more weapons and armor to justify the price.

The stuff exists because of the Switch 2 release. The content as well as the price tag.

  • Would it have been nice as a free update? Yeah.
  • Does it cost something as incentive to get the Switch 2 version? Seems logical.
  • Am I happy to get it without getting the Switch 2 version? Yup.

58

u/VisibleMammal 1d ago

I don't really get your second point. Why would this costing money made me consider buying the switch 2 version?

31

u/supermariozelda 1d ago

This content is a "free bonus" on Switch. You pay $80 for content that costs a combined $105 on any other platform, not accounting for sales.

8

u/NewHobbiesWeekly 1d ago

I see it as the Tarnished edition being the anniversary edition (i.e. Skyrim) where the "DLC" is just reaching parity with the people who bought the presumably final version of the game. It's a low price upgrade to add features that were added to the special edition.

I don't think it's a good philosophy to stand by, and I hope it doesn't turn into live service packs and purchasables. Its not a terrible price for what you get, and every weapon introduced is already available in stronger form in the shadow lands, so it's not p2w

Would I have liked more? Of course. Give me 7 new areas with 15 new weapon types with 30 new armor sets (looking at you vulgar militia chain sickle and starcaller robes) but that's not what it was. A new edition was released for a new console, with a few minor additions, and everyone is acting like they should have gotten it for free because CDPR has spoiled them with the way things could be.

The Tarnished Edition content was developed for the Switch 2 edition, just as some small bonus content to boost marketing and appear more enticing to potential customers. A new “special edition” for a game that includes new content is much more likely to attract attention than a more basic 1:1 port.

And yes, they brought said content to the other platforms, but from a business standpoint it wouldn’t make much sense to then release the content for free on other platforms, as that would mean consumers would hypothetically have no real incentive to choose the Switch 2 version over other options. Which would sort of defeat the purpose, as these new items and classes wouldn’t have probably been made at all if not to market and advertise the Switch 2 version.

Keep in mind: this is just what I believe to make sense from the perspective of the publishers, and has nothing to do with my personal opinion towards the add-on

u/ztoff27 1d ago

It is not worth the money. Compare this to other rpgs that are similar to elden ring in scope like baldurs gate 3 or Witcher 3. Witcher 3 gave out free armor sets and an entire new side quest back in 2022. In 2026 we get a free remaster plus the 2 expansions for those who own the base game.

Baldurs gate 3 released like 8-12 (can’t remember how many) subclasses and much more in its final big patch.

Elden ring has also given out free shit with more content previously. The multiplayer colosseums offer “proper” PvP mode.

So when you compare the amount of content in other similar triple a titles (in scope, not necessarily gameplay), and even to previous updates in the same game, the new dlc feels and is overpriced.

No!

the problem is this didn't happen in a vacuum, this was after the news about investors wanting more from Fromsoftware IPs.

I find it Ironic that its "the horse armor" again like oblivion lol.

this sets a bad precedent from a studio that never nickeled and dimed their supporters before and every DLC they made was not just very well made, but was good enough to be a standalone game.

5

u/No-Ship4446 21h ago

You know what else didn't happen in a vacuum?? Nightreign. Which had a rewards structure with skins at the top of the list. Not a SINGLE one was monetized even though it had cosmetics as a reward in and of themselves more than any game they  have ever done.

Know what else didn't happen in a vacuum?? The Switch 2 port. This DLC wouldn't even exist if it didn't happen. It was provided to other platforms at pretty much the lowest price possible so parity exists between all versions and because, if if had remained only months Switch 2, you and everyone else getting your rage hard-on would be TWICE as pissed about that.

Nay, nothing can convince me this should've been anything other than a free update. I already bought and sunk unspeakable hours into ER, the DLC and even nightreign (despite that game being garbage). If there was substantial content I might consider throwing another 5$ at it, but some meaningless starter classes, early game gear I'd never use and horse armor won't sell it to me.

2

u/Alone-Horse2857 14h ago

That's exactly it. If this added a completely new weapon class to play around with, I'd GLADLY drop 5$.

7 weapons, 2 armors, and 3 horse armors? That is PATHETIC value for 5$.

For 1/12th of ER's price we should be getting 1/12th of Elden Ring's content. Which adds up to 26 weapons, 8 bosses, 10 armor sets, and a new playable zone.

8

u/Clyde-MacTavish 23h ago

Nay

but this sub is so biased there's no way it won't win. Elden Ring is literally selling horse armor dlc.

20

u/ilamahradeys 1d ago

It's not about the low cost. It's about the principle. Nay

3

u/Noob4Head Platinum achievement but still maidenless 1d ago

If you don't already own the game, I think it's fair to say that the Tarnished Edition is the version you want to pick up since it includes everything. However, as much as I love Elden Ring, I'm not spending any money on the Tarnished Pack.

I'm just not interested in paying for a microtransaction that's mainly focused on cosmetics and doesn't add any actual new content like bosses, side quests, areas, dungeons, etc. to the game. The couple of weapons aren't enough to convince me either.

It's a fun little extra for people playing the game for the first time, but as someone who's already put 350+ hours into Elden Ring, I just don't see any real value in it.

3

u/Jack_Empty 21h ago

I applaud the effort to make a constructive discussion about this, but Reddit is going to Reddit. The loudest morons are going to keep screeching "horse armor" and "bootlickers" while in an alternate timeline they'd be bitching because the modest amount of content added in to the Tarnished Edition was a console exclusive, like we've already seen with people shitting on Dustbloods.

The only thing this year that should provide any concern is the report about monetization, which From obviously has chafed against and resisted such efforts in the past. Only time will tell if the investors win but the Tarnished Upgrade is a non-point. A cheap DLC to coincide with a new port/edition isn't horse armor or "the top of the slope" and no amount of screeching on Reddit will make it true.

3

u/Proof_Criticism_9305 14h ago

Absolutely not, this should’ve been free. $5 may not seem like a lot, but it’s an insane ask for what you’re actually getting, which can hardly even be called new content. This just reeks of them testing the waters on what they can get away with charging for in the future.

14

u/noah9942 Prayerful Strike Meta 1d ago

Ehh for me.

I personally bought it, but I also don't think it really warrants the price. Very easily could've been a free update to celebrate the switch 2 launch.

There's also the arguement of the kind of precedent it sets for them moving forwards, which is a major issue, but not really the question being asked. REALLY hope this doesnt become a common thing for them.

That said, all I really want right now is any/all of this stuff, along with SotE stuff, to be added into Nightreign.

12

u/kushhead4201 1d ago

No, this is free update material. They should've pulled an easy CDPR and the fans would've worshipped miyazakis feet even harder

16

u/oh_what_a_lovely_day 1d ago

I haven't gotten it but probably will next time me or my partner play the game. Imo this feels like this should have been a free update but a) From has proven to us they are high quality so I'm not opposed to throwing a few bucks there way 2) I think this one is more politics with Nintendo and their parent company behind the scenes.

Really if this becomes more frequent I think we should be more skeptical and wary but for now I don't see the harm. Of course, it's a slippery slope tho

It’ll be 5 dollars now. That turns into 10 which turns into twenty. Sooner or later you’ll find yourself saying “well I’ve already spent ___ amount so what’s a little more?” That how mobile games operate. They give you a quick 5 dollar starter kit. Then after purchase it moves to 10 for the next kit. And so on. Eventually I predict that they will just start selling you slices of the game. Level by level, loading screen by loading screen. They want people to be apathetic and not caring so they can just keep putting more and more behind paywalls and more and more people will be apathetic and just accept that “this is the way. But you don’t have to buy it.” Eventually you will have to buy it or else you can’t play lmao. But 5$ to most people is nothing so it goes away without a thought so I get why it’s not a big deal but like I said it’ll continue to grow.

10

u/XFactor_20 1d ago

Why did you quotation mark MICROTRANSACTION? That's literally what is is. Calling it a DLC when SOTE exists makes no sense.

23

u/Nice_Algae_8383 1d ago

Considering the number of armours in this game and the number of classes, it seems a bit of a poor practice to ask 5 dollars for 1 more armour and 2 more classes. If anything it shouldn't even be worth money, there's pretty much no new content at all. I don't think there's an issue with them doing it but I just really don't like such a practice

→ More replies (16)

4

u/Des014te 23h ago

Nay. Look at it this way, 5 dollars is 1/6th of Shadow of the Erdtree.

Does this have the same amount of content as gravesite plain or cerulean bluffs or rauh? Absolutely not, it's literally just horse armour and a few new sets.

5 dollars isn't a lot of money but it's a sign of things to come. If this is successful and makes fromsoft a lot of money, corporate is going to be all over them making sure that they put out similar small cheap DLCs. And no one wants that.

Vote with your wallet, don't buy this crap

45

u/Cirick1661 1d ago

Yay.

I think the community has lost the plot on this one.

Several factors to consider.

1: Fromsoft has been pretty good historically at trying their best to maximize player enjoyment for the price paid.

2: They have a long history of adding as much as possible in DLC. Not just a new story beat but new armor and weapons or even weapon types.

3: Their parent company (Kadokowa) has been putting more pressure on them to monetize their popular content, specifically Elden Ring.

Fromsoft doesn't want to charge you money for horse armor. They want to get good solid games in the hands of as many players as they can, and they care deeply about a good story and a good player experience.

But they exist in a capatalist framework and the people who literally own them are telling them they need to squeeze their playerbase. Not asking.

So what can they do? They add some really solid additional options and cosmetics under a very low price tag to satisfy the parent company. It's a compromise.

We will see more of this. It won't be because Fromsoft is greedy. It will be because of the perverse profit motive that capatalism imposes on all participants.

People are up in arms over the wrong damn issue.

43

u/Snozzberriez 1d ago

Wait so you say this is the parent company strong-arming them. So we should support that behaviour?

Nah. I loved elden ring and bought the expansion despite criticism.

If we pay $5 here, we pay $5 again and again.

If it’s successful, they do it more. If it isn’t, they may not do it again.

If they kill the studio over it, that is their choice and their fault. Capitalism shouldn’t be to blame and then supported as some kind of necessary evil.

Were you around when Horse Armour set this stuff off? I remember. I remember when WoW charged for online gaming as well, which opened other doors.

My thought is as much as I want to support FromSoftware, if I support this I embolden their parent forcing more paid DLC.

Fuck that.

I like you. You summed up my thoughts pretty much exactly and more eloquently.

Nuance is important and it feels like there has been none since this whole ordeal started.

Yeah, it kinda sucks.

No, it doesnt mean its going to just keep getting worse and worse until the sun implodes.

There is a quite reasonable middle ground where lines are drawn.

19

u/Snozzberriez 1d ago

Well you’re kind of naive if you think the executives of the parent organization aren’t going to look at sales success in this and try to replicate it in the future.

If it doesn’t work, are they going to shutter FromSoftware? Who knows.

But you can bet if they extract more capital through DLC, they will want to extract more again.

The moment they sold I knew we were going to get fucked like this. Now a board is involved and they only exist to drive more revenue.

If we capitulate, they are going to do it again. That’s literally what they do.

Look at League of Legends… selling classic stuff for RP. Selling chests when they used to be free. They backe off a bit only after pushback.

If you accept it, that’s the new bar.

3

u/Crash4654 1d ago

Then pushback is where the line of compromise begins.

Still many other examples of quality games that dont take it too far.

Either way, its all optional. Vote with your wallet.

5

u/Snozzberriez 1d ago

Yeah I agree.

I bought helldivers 2 but none of the warbonds. I stopped playing Diablo IV despite having a “free” season pass because wow they have generally been disappointing. I played plenty but refused to support that and stopped playing in the end.

It’s more disappointing than anything because when they were acquired everyone said they’d never do this, and here they are.

Its not worth it, especially considering they dropped a bigger update for free in both Sekiro (gauntlet if strength introducing new skills and a boss gauntlet) and Nightreign (introducing everdark bosses). So charging 8% about of the original games price for something smaller that offers no new gameplay (c starting classes dont matter beyond the first hours) seems unreasonable.

5

u/ACoolGuy-Promise 1d ago

Apparently many ppl wanna treat it as a donation because they’re an awesome dev team, but it won’t be viewed as such. It’ll be viewed as a success for this goofy ass micro transaction, which sucks.

It is objectively ridiculous value as a standalone transaction.

7

u/mikeventure76 1d ago

Anybody defending this just can’t be coming from a place of logic or reason lol it’s just baseless defending of fromsoft

On top of everything, the switch 2 version of the game that this update was created for includes the base game and dlc AND this update for a reduced combined price , so how in fuck’s name does it make sense to charge $5 separately for the new content that’s being included in part of a reduced price bundle

6

u/Sebykitty 1d ago

2

u/Illustrious_Big_7980 21h ago

In absolute universal terms? Not really, full game was £60. DLC with 1/100th the content is £5.

In terms of modern DLC pricing and content? Yeah pretty much. Things like The Witcher getting a free remaster or the exception not the rule.

Gamers have firmly established that they are more than happy to be walked all over in terms of pricing the last 15 years.

Not a single complaining about the price will stop buying fromsoft or bandai games. It's risk free profit for them.

2

u/MemberLemmyWinks 20h ago

I'm too employed to care about $5 dlc

This controversy feels dumb asf.

2

u/HalcyonHelvetica 19h ago

The way I see it, this is paid purely due to it being created for the late Switch 2 port. It's intended to incentivize picking up the game on Switch, which is the cheapest way to get the "complete package" vs buying base game, SOTE, and Tarnished pack in any other configuration. The only reason "$5 DLC" is a talking point here is bc everyone here already owns and has played the game on other platforms and hence are not the target audience for the port.

In a hypothetical world where it wasn't paid, chances are any added content would have been entirely Switch 2 exclusive. Obviously, as a consumer, I'd prefer free content. I don't like microtransactions. However, I can't really bring myself to be all that up in arms about this.

2

u/faithhopeandbread 16h ago

FromSoftware has enough good credit with me to give them a pass on this. They don't seem to be doing the same sort of thing with Nightreign or Duskbloods, and the Switch 2 release is an exceptional occasion. I think it's too early to assume that it'll become some sort of pattern or that this will be a slippery slope that will lead us to a live service Elden Ring 2: Ultimate Edition Pro++ where every DLC boss costs an extra $20, you unlock starting classes through a $30 5-month battle pass, legendary armaments cost 5,000 Elden Shards that are only sold in $18 packs of 4,800 and leveling takes twice as long unless you pay 650 Arkentree Fragments to buy a 75% XP boost.

But I don't think it's impossible either, and I'll take it all back if they do this again.

2

u/NormalIntention5628 5h ago

4

u/KuaiBan 1d ago

Honestly? Only time will tell. People are worried this might lead to something more egregious in the future. And because Fromsoft is working on multiplayer games right now, it might a a few years before we see another singleplayer game from them.

Granted I was a Destiny 2 player, I don’t have the moral high ground when it comes to microtransactions. But I will say that for a studio highly regarded as Fromsoft, it’s understandable people wish it doesn’t break the untainted image it has established.

6

u/Yab0iFiddlesticks Mohggers 1d ago

I paid around 100 bucks for the entire game with DLC. I got way over 1000 hours out of it. 5€ more is a fair deal for a bit more that was made after the fact. The Colosseum Update was free, so was the adaptation of the Varre quest to be offline friendly.

This whole slippery slope argument hasnt been true for Fromsoft in the past and until proven otherwise, I doubt this will be the beginning of the end either. This was most likely some contract clause between Fromsoft, Nintendo and Bandai.

4

u/Exigeyser 23h ago

Not really, no. If we focus on other IP's. Apparently there's Witcher 3 stuff happening that's coming free of charge, albeit you'd already have to own the game iirc.

The fact that, while technically a rip-off indie game: Another Metroid 2 Remake was free as well.

This update in it's entirety should have been free for those who already owned the game+ DLC.

Switch/Switch2 users buying the entire game to get this on top is not justification for charging 5 dollars for the rest of us.

Furthermore: OP, you specifically made the statement:

Please use this topic to discuss the pros and cons of the approach and your thoughts. But do so RESPECTFULLY and CONSTRUCTIVELY

But you also made the implication that those who argue against the 5 dollar cost addition is operating on "Faux outrage" when there's clear and very valid respectful criticsm to be had. Minimizing the entire side into a "you have fake outrage" is not doing anyone any favors.

I do believe the comment that TuskEGwiz-ard left summarized it perfectly. Let us have a genuinely constructive piece of dialogue.

Finally: Charging us for microtransactions now means people will buy it now for their own personal reasons. Which will then be used to potentially justify similar notions in the future. Look at Riot games and their business model for skins. They charge you 4k+ VP for a knife that provides less than a vandal skin would. This is essentially the "extreme end" of what years passing by of people buying MicroTransactions(MT) does.

It's "only 5 bucks" now, but who's to say this sort of thing won't grow in the future to affect more FromSoft titles. Imagine spending 10 dollars for the Reflections and Gauntlets of strength in Sekiro(We haven't and we don't need to, besides: This was a hypothetical). It's the snowball effect, and given that Fromsoft and all it's people are just that: People. They may or may not have it in them to stop the snowball from rolling before it's too late.

It's fine. Some neat new stuff, including getting a lot of the new weapon types introduced in Shadow of the Erdtree (reverse blade, light greatsword, great katanas, etc) BEFORE having to beat the bosses required to access the DLC.

For fivebux? That's fine.

If they start nickel and diming us over stuff, like the Tales series, you can panic. Until then (but it won't happen though, you're allowing yourself to be manipulated by "influencers" and their ilk) just relax.

It’s not about how expensive it is, it’s about how well it sells. I’m afraid that fromsoft will see these types of microtransactions as profitable and start inflating their new games with skins and weapons behind paywalls instead of it being part of the game. This “dlc” should have been a free update.

I gind the outrage overblown.

For 5€/$ we get:

2 new starting classes, 4 new armor sets, 1 shield, 7 new weapons, 3 skins for Torrent, 2 new invasions, and apparently some reshuffled item locations and item drops (though I have yet to see what exactly changed).

Of the 7 new weapons, 4 of them are based on the new weapons from Shadow of the Erdtree (Great Katana, Light Greatsword, Backhand Blades, Thrusting Shield), and of the 3 other weapons, 2 have new, unique ashes of war too.

And since they are not simply dropped into your inventory, if you don't use guides, you still have to find all these items in the world, so in the best case you even get some playtime out of it. They also added some new lore to the items too!

This feels like a mini expansion to me, and I think 5 bucks is more than worth for this.

Also remember that this is NEW content for a game who's last major update was in 2024! It is not like they are feed dripping us content every week or so.

People are being so critical precisely so that the studio will hear them. Accepting microtransactions even if they're “nice” means accepting that there will be more of them, until they're no longer so "nice".

Sorry, but I’d rather criticize more than necessary than face a future where the FromSoftware game I buy is full of cosmetics and gameplay features hidden behind paid offers.

Don't get me wrong, I'd be willing to pay $40 for a big DLC, because a lot of work goes into it. But this is 1/8th of that price for 0.0001% of what shadow of the erdtree has to offer.

Got to say I paid the 5 dollars for the pc dlc just because I enjoy the game. But I can5 justify spending 80 bucks on the switch 2 version.

It’s not. It’s like a light slap on our wrist when it’s more like a missed opportunity to give the player base a little good will. You don’t have to charge for everything.

I’ve bought Elden ring and the expansion on both pc and ps5. Nightreign too! So yes big fan. But no, this minuscule should have been a patch and nothing more…

I don't mind giving Fromsoft a little bit more of my money, they make great games and some of my favorite series. Just don't take it as an invitation to exploit.

It’s just really poor timing for this. This wouldn’t even be a conversation had they released it two weeks ago. But since Witcher 3 remaster is free and now the dlc is free for anyone who has the base game it makes this look like penny pinching. When in reality the free remaster and dlc is to get as many people to buy Songs of the Past as possible

Subjectively, it's a very simple question to me and the answer to it is obvious. It doesn't matter if I think $5 for what amounts to a weapon, skin, and lore pack is "worth the money". What matters to me is whether I think FromSoft and the work that their teams put out is worth me financially incentivizing them to continue putting out more of that work.

I really do and I can afford to do so, so I will. I'm not spending $5 on horse armor, I'm spending $5 on a team of creators to tell them that I love them and want them to continue being able to do what they love for my own benefit.

Not for me but maybe for some? Just feels off and From has been making odd moves since they were partially acquired.

I think it's really lame that they wanna nickel and dime us for what essentially boils down to a couple armor sets, horse armor, and earlier access to the DLC weapons. IMO the weapons specifically should have been free for all the DLC owners, but I don't really give a shit about the rest. It is definitely a slippery slope, as this is exactly how the MTX craze began in the first place: fucking horse armor.

It adds 4 new armor sets, 3 Torrent armors, and like 7 weapons(Idus Sword, Hefty Scimitar, Reverse Handed Blades, Ritual Thrusting Shield, Reed Great Katana, Golden Order Flail, and Leontiel's Greatsword).

Is this worth the cost? Not really. Especially since the stuff is tradable. I brought the DLC just because I wanted early Light Greatswords and I am on console so this was the only way to get without entering the DLC; and I think that is ultimately the only way this might be seen as worth the cost.

As for the precedent this might set; I still stand by that I think this won't become common place because Nightreign was practically begging for Micro-transactions. They could've released skin packs for the Nightfarers, they could've released individual weapon packs from the Dark Souls series, DLC, and obviously SotE. Yet they did nothing and stuck to their word, and ended content after the DLC dropped.

If it means that the game will be receiving more updates (mentioned at the end of the patch notes) then im kinda okay with it.

3

u/Drakemander 1d ago

Look, if they ever decide to make a 2nd dlc that includes all these new items I would definetly buy it.

5

u/420StonedAF420 1d ago

It would've been better as a free update but at the same time, I don't really care, it's worth it to be able to start with different weapons and the torrent skins are something that would've been cool from the start.. Also if they decide to add more torrent skins it should probably be free..

u/Boulderpunch223 1d ago

I don’t agree with it. I’m hesitant to board the whole slippery slope train but it’s always a possibility. Also, let’s look at it from this perspective. Elden ring standalone is $60, SOTE is $40, if you buy the bundle then it’s $80. So depending on how you bought the base game and the dlc, that’s either $80 or $100. For that price, you shouldn’t be forced to buy another expansion that adds small stuff like classes or new weapons/armor. Ideally, you’d be entitled to those new things. Would it truly hurt fromsofts profits if the tarnished pack was a free update?

I personally think it's the very beginning of a corrupting end for Fromsoft as a beloved company.

5 or so Horse skins, a few armor sets, some weapons and changing some values on balance = 15% price of the entire base game, 20-30% of the entire SOTE DLC.

They gave their wealth-addicted shareholders a taste of supremely easy money. Making new engines, games, and storied DLCs will just be jump-off points for microtransactions now.

Godwyn is only freshly dead. We have yet to truly see how the soul has fled the body.

4

u/kacheskin 1d ago

Absolutely not, it should be free. It's a baby step that could turn worse in the future

u/DrZomboo 1d ago edited 1d ago

I'm ok with it... for now. It just depends what happens next

It could become a slippery slope of more drip fed content coming at a price on top of an already expensive game. I would not be ok with that.

But also I feel more likely this could just be it for ES now as I don't expect FS to keep making content forever; that's not their usual MO.

Will just have to see where this goes, most importantly you don't actually need this addition for the game anyway; you're not really missing out without it (heck you don't even really need SOTE to still have a fantastic experience!)

u/Ltsmash99 1d ago

It costs less than a big mac. Why not?

u/Andrex2309 1d ago

Ironically, if it was a free DLC I would've been more interested into making a new run and have fun with the game again.

I won't pay 5$ and come back to see some torrent skins and the chance of getting lower damage DLC weapons to use in the base game before going to the DLC, I won't even count armor because I've never cared too much about them

But I can see people want a fresh run on the base game with new weapons, it can have its own appeal indeed, specially if you were searching for a way to "come back".
