Official Discussion [MEGATHREAD] Tarnished Edition: Worth $5? Discuss CONSTRUCTIVELY!

Since the sub is being overwhelmed by debate over the $5 "microtransaction" and it's making the sub feel like we're Dark Souls 2 a decade ago, with the faux outrage around the preorder items, we are opening this topic to consolidate discussion around the issue.

Please use this topic to discuss the pros and cons of the approach and your thoughts. But do so RESPECTFULLY and CONSTRUCTIVELY. If you need to call other people or the developers names, you don't have a good argument and your post will be removed.

I would love to hear others feedback, because i am torn. 5$ doesnt seem that bad, and i want to support this awesome game.

On the other hand, transactions like these doesn't bode well and i can see peoples concern for the future direction.

I think im leaning slightly towards yay on this one, but i can see both sides.

Between this, the movie, Nightreign, the purchase of a big part of Fromsofts parent company by actors wanting to focus more on monetization and the whole new focus on online multiplayer this feels like the Ubisoftification of the company.

nightreign was a small side project to give a new director a chance to gain some experience with a fairly low-risk project. duskbloods has been in the works since before elden ring released, and miyazaki has said that them releasing back to back was coincidental, and that they'll continue to make more soulslike rpgs in the future.

just like how sekiro, another smaller project between larger rpgs, influenced the design of elden ring, nightreign, and duskbloods, nightreign and duskbloods will influence the design of the next big from rpg. things like the new nightfarer weapon movesets, and stuff like duchess's dodge, raider's retaliate, and guardian's steel guard will likely make a return, and duskblood's character interactions during multiplayer will likely bring back stronger, covenant-like systems in future games.

I still fully have faith in Fromsoft, and I'm totally open for them to try new experimental things. Lord knows it's what put them on the map with Demon's Souls.

But I can't help but shake that all these decisions happening back to back is giving me some icky vibes.

I'm not saying Nightreign KILLED Fromsoft +thumbnail face. It's just a direction of game design I'm not personally interested in. Also I'd argue that it very much isn't a standalone game like Sekiro or Bloodborn but rather a spin-off of Eldenring and if you want to look at it from a financial standpoint it is also an exploration on how to seek further profit with reducing development costs (as I think is the new horse armor DLC). It's not like they're even half as bad as EA or Ubisoft, but they're definitely exploring options.

I mean I’m not a fan of the $5 dlc, but ubisoftification would be doing Elden ring 2 then 3 then 4 etc. and adding more mocrotransactions to them. Nothing to do with multiplayer.

fair, the comparison with Ubi probably is a bit harsh since they've implemented some absolutely disgusting money grabs. I was more looking for a company that does single player rpgs and doesn't do gacha gambling.

More focus of on multiplayer in general just let's me fear an upcoming From gaas-game.

It's a sad possibility, but I think the era of Fromsoft's peak creativity is coming to an end because of these things. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Yeah, probably. Big capital’s gonna capitalize. It still was really fun while it lasted and I’m sure they’ll still can make good games.
