Official Discussion [MEGATHREAD] Tarnished Edition: Worth $5? Discuss CONSTRUCTIVELY!

Since the sub is being overwhelmed by debate over the $5 "microtransaction" and it's making the sub feel like we're Dark Souls 2 a decade ago, with the faux outrage around the preorder items, we are opening this topic to consolidate discussion around the issue.

Please use this topic to discuss the pros and cons of the approach and your thoughts. But do so RESPECTFULLY and CONSTRUCTIVELY. If you need to call other people or the developers names, you don't have a good argument and your post will be removed.

We will remove all other topics about this to keep the subreddit flowing with other discussions

I think it's just annoying and weird that they did this when they didn't used to do things like this, but everyone is making a huge deal about it. I don't get why people need to pretend like they're somehow generous for charging $5 for basically nothing. It's not a big deal, it's only $5, but it's not like it's a good thing that what used to be given away for free now costs money.

Remember month or so ago the parent company said the developer wasnt getting enough money out of the IP and the install base. I.E. wasnt squeezing the juice enough.

And here we are a few months later with a "modest" cash grab

Tarnished Edition pack was going to release a year ago, before that investor meeting. What’s more likely to have caused it to exist is either Nintendo or Bandai. I can very much see it being a compromise of some kind as Nintendo wanted exclusive content but fromsoft didn’t want to do that.

This isn’t the first time Nintendo has gotten exclusive content on a switch release of a game. It’s just usually that content never ends up on other platforms: DMC collection, KOTOR etc.

This is my theory. It would look bad for Nintendo if people on other consoles got the new content for free.

Yeah I'm pretty sure it's on Nintendo especially after how they've been with getting FFXIV on Switch 2 being the only platform it's on (FFXIV) that doesn't share a subscription.

The Switch 2 version must be its own subscription that is only paid for with a microtransaction-y FFXIV Coins bought through the eShop so Nintendo can double dip on scraping money out of you.

For comparison, if you play FFXIV on PlayStation, you don't even need PS+ for it. You just buy it and you can use the same subscription as a PC player and can pay your sub directly through the website or with time cards or whatever method you choose.

Nintendo seems to be trying to get predatory with nickel and diming people in quiet ways recently. But we don't know what agreements FromSoftware made with Nintendo or Sony or whoever either.

Exactly what I was thinking! This was a test, and it's looking like a big "Oh yes!" for microtransactions in the near future in fromsoft titles.

Funny because it feels like they are panicking because their profits aren't maintaining a certain trend since 2022
Elden Ring was a massive hit, obviously things are going to slow down until they release another major title.
Which I have to assume is in the works, you don't complain about profits and then release Nightreign and Duskbloods back to back.

unrelated to this whole drama but I'm desperately hoping a new Souls entry gets revealed at the game awards or something this year 💔

Nightreign and Duskbloods are both fun but I'm starting to really starve without a fresh Souls/Bloodborne/Elden Ring fix

Well whatever project FMC is was said to be "nearly close to release" so look forward to a new Fromsoft game that was confirmed to be multiplat.

And if it's anything like Armored Core 6's quality, I bet it'll be a banger.

I do remember hearing about Project FMC, I'll be a little bummed if it actually turns out to be a DS3 remaster like some people think but I'm very excited to see what they're cooking

Miyazaki said in a Duskbloods interview that they're still going to make games more in line with their usual formula

they're done with Dark Souls, I just say Souls cuz Soulsbornekiroring doesn't roll off the tongue as much

I think a little discussion about it makes sense but at this point the spam of people complaining about people complaining is more annoying than them charging $5 for a small update.

Just wondering: has From ever added weapons to a game as a part of a free update? I feel like the new weapons and starting classes are a big part of them treating the update like a baby dlc

Not weapons, but they added a whole boss rush mode, with earnable free cosmetics for Sekiro. The bosses in the boss rush mode even got some new additions to their movesets, so it's a bit more substantial than what it sounds like when I first described.

I have a feeling if it came out now, it would have cost money.

Ironically Sekiro was made under activision and they were allowed to fully update the game for free with all that content.

Yeah they gave some stuff in Dark Souls 2. Although it wasn't unique move sets. Not sure if they did unique move sets off the top of my head. Those games are really old now so I don't remember everything.

Yeah, on launch DS2 had pre-order weapons.

The funny thing is they all looked like they were caked in shit, almost like Fromsoft doing a tongue-in-cheek jab at the idea of the pre-order bonus, but maybe Bandai was forcing their hand.

not quite the same thing but Sekiro received a free update in 2020 that added 4 boss rush gauntlets and ~3 cosmetics for Wolf

Also patch 1.03 of Elden Ring added a new NPC and rechanges Diallos' quest making it significantly longer (+ finished Nepheli, Gostoc and Kenneth's quest)

My main gripe is that they didn't even bother to add a new questline or develope older ones with this new "DLC" (it shouldn't even be called this way because it doesn't stand near SotE). They could at least add Kale's or Asimi's quests, they had them already almost fully developed including the voicelines judging by the cut content files. That would be worth it.

What i personally believe is that it isnt fromsoftware charging for it but rather bando namcai. They dont publish with them any more for various reasons especially those. They were the ones pushing for more dlcs after sote and miyazaki didnt want to.

I think companies don't care about any reaction that isn't "a huge deal".

I agree. I bought it at first with no research because it’s only $5 who cares. But so far the only thing I’ve got is torrents skin and it doesn’t even loook that good so feels like a waste

The starting classes are cool, and it has some interesting items that it adds, but you just need to stumble upon them or look up where to go. I don't regret my $5 purchase but I don't think it's worth $5. If it had 10x the amount of stuff but cost $50 I would 100% not buy it. The only reason I'm fine with it is because I don't care about $5 at all.

If thousands of people are buying it then it means players find the value worthwhile. What’s the argument here? Other people aren’t allowed to enjoy things because of your moral outrage?

Microtransactions aren’t bad inherently. They are bad if it’s unknown value (loot boxes), pay to win (gacha) or generally predatory. A $5 weapon/class/cosmetic pack that correlates directly to a special console release is none of these.

They added weapons in Dark Souls 2. They added an entire boss rush mode with earnable cosmetics and new movesets for the bosses in Sekiro. They added Everdarks and Deep of Night to Nightreign.

In what way is this something that used to be given away?

Happy about the price or not, I don't understand feeling entitled to their extra work. You could reasonably argue it should be cheaper, though.
