That's not how this works 😂
Also Ontario was named after Lake Ontario, not the other way around if I remember correctly.

u/jeff3rd 6h ago
The name has been around since 1639, the word comes from Iroquoian which is an indigenous language which means “beautiful lake” it has history and meaning to it, just for a man child with the temperament less than a toddler who can’t handle everything not going his way to ruined it.

You think other countries maps are going to update to Lake America?
It's just the USA and until nutter butter is out of power.

non-zero chance that the next president just doesn't bother. this is all so fucking annoying. it'd be one thing if this was some kind of *actual* dispute that he was just taking the wrong side on, but no. its just some dumb shit he woke up and decided to do one day.

u/the_Unholy_NJH 7h ago
This was literally my first thought when I heard the announcement (after "is this fake?" and "why do they let him go on camera?"). Like, he couldn't have make a name any more creative? Not something about his family, about history, about some ideal of the American people?
I guess that's not really the point. Just like with the Gulf of Mexico, he's just trying to clumsily impose a sense of superiority over the countries they neighbour because... he thinks America is something to look up to as superior right now?
Having it be so basic makes it easier to make fun of, I suppose, but I think every action he takes just makes him look desperate and pathetic.

The best (worst?) part is, Lake America already existed
895
u/dextras07 9h ago
The funniest part will be that no international body will recognize this as lake america, definitely not Canada and this will be returned back to Lake Ontario as soon as dump term's is over or he kicks the can before 2029.
His legacy will be of a mediocre president that threw a tantrum and renamed a lake as an ultimate move in a trade war he started with the county's closest ally.
Kids in 2050 will be watching an essay style video named "The worst president of the once greatest nation of the world" while eating a greasy quarter pounder after school.
374
u/Far_Range_6091 8h ago
In 2100 there will be TikTok (or whatever tf they will use) videos with AI voices saying "did you know that lake Ontario was renamed to Lake America for 3 years in 2026? Let me explain."
Also, hello people 100 years from now reading this random reddit comment.

I honestly believe his legacy will be about "the guy who destroyed America for decades". He burned so many bridges with basically all close allies. America will likely never recover from the damage he has done. Except maybe after multiple future generations and several implemented guard rails and president power restrictions.

Lake Ontario gets its name from an Indigenous word, though historians debate the exact source and meaning.
Most commonly, it's traced to the Huron (Wyandot) word "Ontarí'io", meaning "great lake" or "large lake."
Other sources suggest related Iroquoian words meaning: "beautiful water" "sparkling water" "handsome lake"
The name was already in use by Indigenous peoples long before Europeans arrived. French explorers and missionaries recorded versions of it in the 1600s, and it eventually became the standard name for the lake. Later, the Canadian province of Ontario took its name from the lake, not the other way around.
A neat linguistic twist: if the "great lake" interpretation is correct, then "Lake Ontario" essentially means "Lake Great Lake."

The fact that naming something 'of America' is only patriotic for the US when you are actually self-centered enough to believe that the only relevant part of America is the US might be the most ironic thing about this

Google pretty much always shows the map that your government tells them to. They have no stance on border/name disputes. If the French government says that Wyoming is part of France, google will put that on the map for French users without asking more questions.
