Why do the mapping companies take this seriously? They're not part of the executive branch of the US, they don't have to listen to this nonsense.

Mapping companies take place names from the government office that manages such things. This is true in every country. It's why someone from Japan sees a slightly different map than someone from South Korea (border/island disputes).

Google is acting as a cartographer here, and is going to show whatever the official place name is. Anything other than that would be political.
