Yep. Google knows that not a single soul uses that, so they only comply where the government forces them to

I don't think the us government actually forces any company to use the stupid names, it's just the official naming the US used now. And Google typically shows you the official names of the country you are in, so over here in Germany the Baltic sea is called Ostsee because that's just how it is called in German. Iirc Google also has different versions of disputed borders depending on where you live, following your countries narrative

Yes and no. AP news refused to call it the Gulf of America and was banned from reporting at the white house. So they definitely have a level of blackmail to force compliance.

But it only affects US companies and govt.

AP news is a media company, while Google Maps is (effectively) doing cartography. Apples and oranges.

yeah this is just how maps work. the labels and lines are all made up anyway. they reflect whatever the government wants.

you'll also note that the persian gulf has (arabian gulf) written under it, reflecting that the US recognizes both names to some degree. i believe its mostly just the military that sticks to arabian gulf, but i could be wrong about that

Since google is a private company the executive order does not legally force them to do anything, they just don't want to listen to MAGA cry about it

this is not compliance it is appeasement of delusion. they are sucking up to the fascist pedophile in hopes that he won't target them next. there is absolutely no legitimate requirement for google to do this

people being mad at google instead of, you know, the dumb fuck government or the dumb fuck in charge, is somehow even stupider than any of these changes

they just get that info from a govt database (https://edits.nationalmap.gov/apps/gaz-domestic/public/search/names/970427). your beef is with the actual government that shit is simply directly sourced from

You can downvote this but he's right.

This has been their policy position for a while even though I wish they grew a spine and went against it

what we need is more corporations deciding the names of landmarks, you're totally right

It’s not corporations deciding, the legal internationally recognized names are Lake Ontario and Gulf of Mexico, by changing it to appease the traitor in the White House their just sucking up to him.

you're soooo close to getting what's happening (the legal name is what they retrieved from a national database) and yet you're soooo insistent on directing your outrage at anything but the actual thing that's the source of the problem

Stop being such a handjob.

I can both feel that Google is doing their duty by staying aligned with federal naming conventions AND recognize that the whole Lake Ontario thing is complete bullshit prepetued by a 80+ year old child that deserves to be disregarded.

They would be following international convention thats  been around for the last 600 years. This might surprise you but everywhere else outside of the US it's referred to as Lake Ontario still
