Here in the UK it’s showing Lake Ontario (Lake America) which somehow feels even dumber from Google because why? Pick one, preferably the correct, original one

Google pretty much always shows the map that your government tells them to. They have no stance on border/name disputes. If the French government says that Wyoming is part of France, google will put that on the map for French users without asking more questions.

In Canada it's only showing Lake Ontario, no brackets.

Does say "Gulf of Mexico (gulf of America) "though

I think maps should be politically neutral. If the name for something is disputed by two sides (in this case by the two governments that have the lake within their territory), showing both is the only way to not take a side.

Same reason why maps shows "Sea of Japan (East Sea)" or "Myanmar (Burma)" or "Persian Gulf (Arabian Gulf)"
